Tradition still has its uses I

By Tom Venetis, Editor

What the average person thinks is ‘normal’ driving and what oil blenders and car makers say is ‘normal’ is surprisingly different. For oil blenders, ‘normal’ driving – consisting of stop-and-go traffic, highway driving, coldweather starts and driving in the summer – is, in reality, ‘severe.’

t must have been a slow news day. CTV Toronto ran a short news item on oil changes (http://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=786255&binId=1.810401), reminding viewers of how important it is to change motor oil regularly. It ran through the obvious: regular oil changes are important, one should know which oil is specified for the vehicle, some newer vehicles need more motor oil than others and others are recommended to use synthetic oils exclusively, and, the most obvious, to read the owner’s manual. Nothing surprising or controversial in almost any of the information presented. Where I did have one question was with the brief mention of on-board oil monitoring systems. These are becoming more common in vehicles and are designed to give vehicle owners more ‘accurate’ drain-interval times. Instead of relying on the traditional maxim of changing motor oils every three months or 5,000 kilometres, oil monitoring systems use a complex set of algorithms and real-time monitoring of driving habits to calculate the time when an oil change should be done. The problem, as is often the case, comes from the two contradictory messages that vehicles owners are given and which were not fully addressed in the piece. Oil monitoring systems are sold to the driving public as a way of saving money on oil changes and helpful in protecting the environment. Some car makers claim drivers can have up to three times fewer oil changes per year, which translates into less oil being consumed and less damage to the environment in having to dispose of used motor oil and filters. However, if one reads the owner’s manual on vehicles equipped with these technologies, the manual still recommends changing the motor oil based on driving conditions, often recommending regular changes for ‘normal’ driving conditions. And this, folks, is where the problems begin: what exactly is ‘normal’? What the average person thinks is ‘normal’ driving and what oil blenders and car makers say is ‘normal’ is surprisingly different. For oil blenders, ‘normal’ driving – consisting of stop-and-go traffic, highway driving, cold-weather starts and driving in the summer – is, in reality, ‘severe.’ Under these ‘severe’ conditions, oil blenders will recommend you change the oil regularly, much closer to the traditional intervals recommended over the past decades. I would recommend it as well. Yes, oil monitoring systems are convenient, but we need to remind vehicle owners that motor oil does a lot more than simply lubricate the engine. Motor oils protect vital engine parts, keep seals intact as they age and suspend harmful particles which can damage an engine and which the filter takes out. What drivers want to avoid is having the oil become so contaminated or broken down that it cannot perform its function, resulting in engine damage and a very expensive repair. Yes, the longer drain intervals with the new technologies are fine. But I would not want to give up on the conventional wisdom of regular oil changes just yet.

News Briefs || Denso Announces Formation of New Americas Aftermarket Headquarters, Product Expansion

Denso Sales California announced that it plans to expand coverage of eight of its aftermarket product lines. The announcements were made during the Automotive Aftermarket Product Expo (AAPEX) in Las Vegas, NV. Denso announced that it will be expanding its domestic and import model coverage in the following product lines: Oxygen sensors, A/C compressors, radiators, condensers, fuel pumps, alternators, starters and coil on plug. The product expansion is a result of increased demand for the company’s products in the Americas. Also announced at the AAPEX show was that the company would be combining two companies to form an aftermarket headquarters for the Americas called Denso Parts and Services Americas, Inc. located in Long Beach, Calif. that will support the increased demand more effectively. The reorganization will be complete on April 1, 2013, “In the Americas, we want to grow 10 per cent per year by 2015. Last year we announced the opening of our Mexico aftermarket sales office. This year we also want to grow our current business in Canada, Central and South America,” said Richard Shiozaki, senior vice-president, Denso Sales California, Inc. during a press conference at the company’s booth on the floor of AAPEX. “As part of the reorganization, – American Industrial Manufacturing Services in Murietta, Caifornia, a Denso group company that produces remanufactured products including starters and alternators, will merge with our current sales office, Denso Sales California. in Long Beach. “This change mainstreams our aftermarket operations in the Americas and is aligned with the global aftermarket growth we announced last year when we introduced Denso’s Aftermarket Business Unit in Japan. The Original Gabriel (Ride Control, LLC), the originator of the world’s first automotive shock absorber in 1907, continues to quickly expand its premium ReadyMount line. The company is introducing over 50 new SKUs, expanding the line by over 25 per cent, and bringing its line to almost 200 ReadyMount preassembled struts, a number that rivals competitors’ lines. Of these new applications, 40 are first- or new-to-market designs covering such high-demand vehicle applications as mid-2000’s Toyota Corolla and Camry, Pontiac G6, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger,

and Ford Crown Victoria. “These are high demand vehicle applications that, until now, have not had preassembled strut coverage in the marketplace,” said Janet Qian, Gabriel director of business strategy and marketing. “Gabriel is laser-focused on market and customer demands for coverage for its premium ReadyMount and for all our product lines.”

Delphi Product & Service Solutions Wins First AAIA Telematics Challenge

Delphi Product & Service Solutions (DPSS) announced the company is the winner of the first Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) Aftermarket Telematics Challenge. The announcement was made at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) in Las Vegas. The connected car solution developed by DPSS through an exclusive partnering agreement with Aftermarket Telematics Technologies, LLC (ATT) was selected based on how it links consumers to the independent aftermarket service channel, as well as supports the independent car care and traditional parts distribution models. “Telematics not only helps improve vehicle performance and safety, but can contribute in driving the parts business,” said Lúcia Veiga Moretti, president, DPSS. “Telematics connects the car owners to repair shops, distributors, manufacturers, fleet customers, and other industries increasing business loyalty and shop profitability. It’s an evolution of the aftermarket business model.” The AAIA Aftermarket Telematics Challenge identifies and recognizes the best example of telematics available in the independent aftermarket. The DPSS Connected Car Telematics Solution, powered by ATT’s suite of software solutions, offers consumers the features and benefits of a connected-car experience without purchasing a new vehicle equipped with OE-embedded telematics technology. It also equips the independent aftermarket with capabilities to compete in the connected car care market. November 2012 SSGM 9

Where is the Aftermarket going? This year’s AAPEX/SEMA highlighted aging vehicle population, opportunities for service operations By Tom Venetis, Editor

T

his year’s AAPEX show in Las Vegas was not only an opportunity to see new automotive technologies and services, it also featured several excellent forums for understanding the trends that will impact independent service providers and aftermarket parts

p 12-18 AApex.indd 12

makers over the next several years. This year’s forums focused on several issues, both economic and demographic. David Portalatin, executive director of Industry Analysis with The NPD Group Inc. said his company’s most recent survey of consumer trends

suggests the continued uncertainty surrounding the economic recovery is still making itself felt in how people are spending disposable income. While there are signs that consumers are growing more optimistic about the overall economy, they are still reluctant to spend too freely because they are worried about their personal economic security. “But consumers do expect to spend more on gasoline, vehicle repair and vehicle purchases than they were a year ago,” Portalatin added. This is to be expected as many vehicle owners cut back on vehicle maintenance for the last four years and there is now a pent-up demand that will make itself felt in the independent aftermarket. Vehicle maintenance can only be postponed for so long. Another trend that will play into the upward pressure on vehicle maintenance spending is the growing age of the vehicle fleet. Portalatin said while new vehicle sales will rise, the numbers will never reach the 17 million vehicle sales per year that was common before this recent recession. “The reality is that even if we sell 15 million new cars this year, there are still 47 million vehicles on the road right now, so the reality is that the vast majority of Americans are going to drive the same car next year as they did in 2012,” he added. Mark Seng, vice-president, Sales and Client Services and Aftermarket and Commercial Vehicle Solutions for Polk said the average age of vehicles “stands at about 11.3 years right now.” This growing number of 10 yearold-plus vehicles on the road indicates an important change in consumers' www.ssgm.com

|| AAPEX

feelings about older vehicles. Driven by a growing economy and easy credit and financing options, many pre-recession vehicle owners were quick to dump their cars after a few years to purchase or lease a new vehicle. Few people were interested in investing in an older vehicle. “We need [as an industry] to focus on this eight-to-10-year-old-plus segment of the vehicle market as consumers have now started to revaluate how they feel about that 10-year-old vehicle,” Portalatin said. “Where five years ago, [consumers] would not have invested in such a vehicle, they are now willing to do so … so the eight-to-10year-old vehicle cohort will become the largest vehicle cohort out there on the road. We now have a segment of consumers who will invest in their older vehicles and this group will be a major source of growth for the aftermarket. We will need to identify who these

14 SSGM November 2012

p 12-18 AApex.indd 14

people are and what their needs are, as they will become the major source of aftermarket growth for the next several years.”

Investment in Quality

What is unique about this cohort of vehicle owners is while they are careful with how they are spending their dollars – worried as they are about their personal economic situations and the overall economy – when they are going to spend dollars on their vehicles, they want to make sure they are getting the most for those investments. They are looking for quality parts and services that will add value to their vehicle and keep it on the road. “These vehicle owners are much more likely to do more frequent maintenance, they will use fuel additives, premium motor oils and other premium automotive products,” Portalatin added. “Premium means offering

greater value on that part, oil or additive. It has to last longer, perform better and keep the value of the vehicle.” One of the more interesting discussions at this year’s AAPEX show is the impact of the Millennial Generation on the aftermarket. This group, born between the early 1980s to the early 2000s, has been much commented on recently, specifically for how they are impacting vehicles sales and long-term vehicle ownership. One worrying trend for the automotive industry is that this generation are expressing very little interest in owning a vehicle. Millennials’ feelings of economic uncertainty, especially with many holding down high student debt loads and looking at poor job prospects, is making many turn away from wanting to own or

|| AAPEX maintain a vehicle. However, surveys done by several research firms show that this generation, when some of them do go out an purchase a car, tends

to overwhelmingly purchase a used, older vehicle. And that buying group does say they are willing to spend good dollars on premium aftermarket parts

and service to keep the vehicle running. The challenge will be in how to effectively communicate with them. Where the Baby Boom generation could be reached by traditional methods of communications — personalized reminder letters, phone calls or advertising in traditional print publications — today’s Millennials use smart phones and social media to communicate. If the aftermarket does not leverage these new communications tools, they are going to find it difficult to bring the Millennials into independent service operations or to sell them aftermarket premium parts and services.

The Connected Car

One of the most significant challenges facing the aftermarket is the growth of telematics. In this issue of SSGM Magazine, Noelle Stapinsky offers an in-depth look at telematics and the impact on aftermarket service providers. Several AAPEX seminars tackled this issue, warning that independent service professionals need access to advanced telematics in order to work on today’s newest vehicle. The problem is OE car makers and dealer operations are jealously guarding the keys to that information, looking to lock out the aftermarket from profitable repair and maintenance work. Fred Blumer, chief officer with Vehcon Inc., a developer of telematics solutions and services, said telematics is about creating an eco-system where the car maker builds “a lifetime relationship with the consumer … and creating an eco-system where [the vehicle owner] never has to go to an independent every again.” People may already be familiar with telematics through mbrace for Mercedes Benz, General Motors' OnStar, BMW’s ConnectedDrive and Hyndai’s blueLink. These systems tie critical vehicle performance and location information back to the dealer operations, allowing dealer service writers to monitor the ‘health’ of the vehicle. The service writer can notify owners about upcoming maintenance work or send a message, via email or text, for example, about a problem noticed by the vehicle’s telematics system and book the 16 SSGM November 2012

“The key is creating high consumer satisfaction and to keep the customer

tied to this eco-system,” Blumer said. “[Car makers] believe that this connectivity will create trust with them because there is now a permanent connection and that connection will strengthen the dealer relationship and drive income to their service operations. It is a great way of emphasizing [vehicle and service] quality by detecting early warranty work to be done.” Scott Lucket, chief information officer with the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) said 62 per cent of all new vehicles to be manufactured in the next two years “will be tethered to the ‘Mothership’ – the dealership – through telematics. This is a strategy to keep that vehicle coming back to the dealer service operations.” Jim Dykstra, president of Aftermarket Telematics Technologies, added telematics is really about the vehicle selling service to the owner, telling them what the car needs and tying the vehicle owner to the shop and the technician. “For example, new telematics technologies will be able to monitor battery health, and if there is a problem, such as a power drop, you will get an alert,” Dykstra added. “If the battery fails, the shop will be notified and a tow truck can be sent to the get the vehicle out of trouble. It is about customer retention and competing with the OEs. Customers love the fact that they are being told ahead of time where there is an issue and when they come into the shop they know what the problem is and the work that is going to be done.” “OEMs are using this technology to drive a wedge between the aftermarket and the consumer, and the aftermarket needs to embrace this technology and provide innovative solutions,” added Polk’s Mark Seng. “[The aftermarket] has a lot of advantages because of the relationship with the vehicle owner. Success in the aftermarket is not just going to be based on understanding a torque wrench and a tire gauge anymore. Understanding 4G is just as important as understanding a fourcylinder engine.” SSGM

|| Counterfeit

Counterfeit Bearings Seized at Toronto Airport Industry says fake auto, industrial parts increasingly a worldwide concern; and yes, they are also found in Canada By Rebecca Reid

O

n Friday, July 13, The Timken Company received an ominous phone call from Constable Grumel Gill at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) asking about counterfeit bearings. It turns out Canadian customs had intercepted a full pallet of about 500 of the company’s bearings at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport in a shipment coming in from China. “They sent some photographs of the cartons and the external packaging, and asked if we could determine they were counterfeit. Unfortunately, to the trained eye – or the reasonably trained eye – the differences can be hard to spot, but the actual cartons looked wrong enough to raise suspicion,” says Evan Boere, business development manager at Timken in Mississauga, Ont. All Timken products are packaged in a black and orange packaging manufactured to a specific corporate standard that has a hologram for counterfeit protection. Boere notes this packaging was lacking a hologram and the barcoding was wrong. “Those were the first indications,” he says. The World Bearing Association has embarked on a mission to educate customs officials around the world about ways to spot counterfeit bearings. In fact, the organization was formed specifically to tackle the problem of fake bearings and has launched the “Stop Fake Bearings” (www.stopfakebearings. org) campaign. These counterfeits don’t just impact the company’s bottom-line. The shoddy performance of these fakes can cost people their lives. “They [the RCMP] get a lot of requests to investigate counterfeit CDs, 20 SSGM November 2012

Counterfeit || but since there is no human safety aspect, they go to the bottom of the pile,” Boere notes. “Constable Gill asked if we could do some analysis –there were enough telltale signs – so we sent the bearings to our manufacturing plant in St. Thomas, Ont., that has a lab.” The bearings conformed to Timken standards in terms of dimensions and surface hardness and weight, but because of the scoring marks on the cone raceway, the bearings were sent to Timken’s metallurgical lab at its Canton, Ohio headquarters. Once they cut them open, it was obvious the bearings weren’t genuine. They were through-hardened and the materials were wrong, Boere explains.

Who made them?

Tracking down the perpetrator of such fakes, however, is challenging. “That gets a little difficult,” Boere says. “It’s very difficult to determine the

manufacturing source, but they came in from China.” “We have to do it ourselves,” explains Daniel J. Szoch, program manager at Timken in Canton, Ohio. Szoch heads up the company’s global anti-counterfeiting operations. The authorities in China usually don’t take the lead in these investigations, he explains. The onus is on the manufacturer to track down the guilty party and point the authorities in the right direction. It can be costly and time consuming. This was the second time in the past year Timken has been notified of counterfeit bearings. “We get a phone call from one of our distributors saying they had unknowingly purchased a bearing from a source they thought was trustworthy,” Boere says. The source was a surplus house. “We spoke to the principal at the surplus house and he was very good at telling us where he sourced them in

China. We tried tracking them down but we weren’t successful,” Boere says. In this last case, there were only six bearings and all were destroyed, he notes. “The products were marked as ‘Made in the USA,’ but they came from China at a really fantastic lead price. It’s interesting with surplus houses because they deal with stuff that comes from all over the world, so I think they tend to turn a blind eye as to whether the product could be counterfeit if the packaging looks close,” Bore says.

Indenti-Fake-Ation

Border officials are the first line of defense against counterfeits and manufacturers continue to educate customs officials around the world on how to spot fakes. Timken’s Boere says he has conducted education sessions for Canadian customs officers and it looks like the efforts have paid off. Scott Lynch, president of the American Bearing

|| Counterfeit Manufacturers Association (ABMA) says raising awareness is the first step to keeping fake bearings off the market. Yet officials don’t have time to thoroughly check every shipment and even then, fakes would still slip through the cracks. Lynch says Chinese officials have seized 2.2 million bearing products since 2009, and a Customs Seizure in Long Beach, Calif. in 2011 unearthed $750,000 worth of fakes mimicking four different brands. Szoch says they also work with customs officials in each region to determine the flow of their bearings in and out of various countries to determine the potential number of counterfeits. “They’ve been more than forthcoming in sharing that kind of information,”

he notes. Timken plans to improve detection rates by adding an extra layer of security to its packaging. The hologram will include a QR code that the customer can scan on the box to determine authenticity. When asked if Timken is concerned they could be targets of packaging theft, Szoch says the company pays close attention to any scenario where it could happen, but says it’s not likely. The company doesn’t reuse any of its packaging and those in the OEM supply chain purchase directly from the company, Szoch explains. “This phenomenon has more of an impact on our aftermarket industrial distribution business,” he notes. Szoch says all bearing manufactur-

ers have been victimized. Top selling products are the ones that get copied. Counterfeit bearings are rampant worldwide, but the prevalence in the Canadian market is unknown. All buyers can do is make sure they purchase from authorized distributors and notify the manufacturer directly if they suspect a product is counterfeit. “Given the nature of these activities, it is virtually impossible to quantify the magnitude of the problem, particularly vis-à-vis a particular manufacturer in a particular market,” says Ingalill Östman, senior vice-president, group communications and government relations at the SKF Group. “Thankfully we have no reason to believe that this is a substantial or widespread issue in Canada,” she notes. “That being said, SKF Canada views even the rare instances of counterfeit products that have arisen in this country as serious.” Östman says SKF has worked with authorities in the limited number of circumstances when it has been necessary and would welcome further opportunities to work with border authorities. “We understand there are custom measures that exist in other countries that are reasonably effective in detecting counterfeit shipments,” she explains. “SKF believes that Canadian law could be strengthened to better protect the borders and market against counterfeit products.” A June 2012 report from the Canadian Intellectual Property Council, “Counterfeiting in the Canadian Market: How do we stop it?” (http:// www.chamber.ca/images/uploads/ Reports/2012/120607CIPC_Counterfeiting.pdf ), says Canadian border enforcement needs to be strengthened and an intellectual property (IP) crime task force needs to be created and customs officials need to be granted ex officio powers to intervene in the importation, exportation and shipment of counterfeit goods. As it stands now, customs officials can’t take action; that’s left up to the RCMP. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) in its www.ssgm.com

It says Canada needs to increase powers for border officials and has placed the country on a priority watch list due to a poor track record of protecting intellectual property rights.

Buyer Beware

The biggest risks with counterfeits are premature wear and failure resulting in serious injuries or death. In October, for example, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), issued a warning (http://www.nhtsa.gov/ About+NHTSA/Press+Releases/2012/ Safety+Advisory:+NHTSA+Alerting+ Consumers+to+Dangers+of+Counterfe it+Air+Bags) about counterfeit airbags circulating in the U.S. market that had either failed to deploy or unleashed shrapnel on the passengers and drivers in the vehicles. RCMP says buyers need to consider the four P’s when making purchases: •  Packaging: Examine the packaging for quality, spelling errors, incorrect fonts, lack of the supplier’s standard security measures like Timken’s holograms, and incorrect barcodes. •  Price: If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. However, some counterfeiters do have the audacity to sell their knock-offs at full price •  Product: Examine the product to look for signs of shoddy manufacturing. •  Place: Be wary when purchasing online; ensure the dealer is reputable. Most counterfeit auto parts come from China (redistributed once they make it to Dubai), but Taiwan, India, Pakistan and Malayasia are also known to ship fake auto parts, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, says in its 2008 report, “Intellectual Property: Protecting Valuable Assets in a Global Market” (http://www.aftermarketsuppliers.org/Doc-Vault/Archive/ Special-Report-IPv3.pdf ). In 1997, the U.S. estimated the worldwide counterfeit auto parts market at US$12 billion, with the U.S. market accounting for 25 per cent. In 2008, market research firm Frost & www.ssgm.com

p 20-23 Counterfeit.indd 23

Sullivan estimated the market would reach US$45 billion by 2011. Just like in the U.S., Canadian auto parts imports from China are increasing. According to Statistics Canada, $662 million of imports of motor vehicle parts and accessories under the headings “87.01 to 87.05” (http://www. cbsa.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tarifftarif/2012/01-99/ch87-2012-05-eng. pdf ) from China entered the Canadian market between January and August of 2012. Total imports for those categories

reached $910 million in 2011, up from $806 million in 2010 and $632 million in 2009. In 2010, U.S. imports were up to US$90.9 billion, an increase of 44.3 per cent from 2009 according to the “2011 Industry Annual Assessment” (http://www.trade.gov/mas/manufacturing/oaai/build/groups/public/@ tg_oaai/documents/webcontent/ tg_oaai_003660.pdf ) from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Transportation and Machinery. The most counterfeited parts are those that most often need replacing, like brakes, brake linings, rotors, seals, air filters, oil filters and windshields, to name a few. With the impact these parts have on safety, the old expression “buyer beware” now sounds more like salient advice rather than a cliché when purchasing aftermarket automotive parts. SSGM

Aftermarket booms –

Automechanika closes with new exhibitor record and a host of new impulses Numerous ideas for e-mobility – new sectors take part in the fair

A

utomechanika 2012 closed its doors after setting a new record of 4,593 exhibitors from 74 countries. Around 148,000 visitors came to Frankfurt for the world’s leading trade fair for the automotive sector. “The aftermarket is booming and, despite the current economic disruptions, Automechanika has once again proved to be a reliable constant,” said Detlef Braun, member of the executive board of Messe Frankfurt. “With an increase in the number of visitors from East Europe and Russia coupled with a decline in numbers from South Europe, Automechanika reflects the current situation in the world economy,” added Braun. This observation was underscored by Klaus Burger, president of the Federal Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Auto-

mobile Service Equipment, who said, “Although visitors from South Europe had scarcity value, there was a very large number from Germany, the Benelux countries and East Europe.” As was to be expected, German exhibitors and visitors see the current economic climate in a more positive light than their colleagues from other nations. The results of the exhibitor poll indicate that the quality of visitors to the fair has risen further in comparison to Automechanika 2010. Seventy per cent of all exhibitors were satisfied to extremely satisfied with the quality of visitors to the fair compared to 64 per cent at the last Automechanika. In particular, German exhibitors reported being able to make more new contacts than in 2010 (from 62 to 67 per cent). Elke Benner, divisional manager,

Automotive, Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG: “Thanks to the large proportion of CEOs and decision makers, we were able to hold good discussions and thus improve our customer relationships and contacts.” In terms of content, this year’s Automechanika, which covered 305,000 m² at the fully-booked-up Exhibition Centre, struck the right notes with three main themes: ‘Truck Competence,’ e-mobility and basic and advanced training. “The idea of spotlighting ‘Truck Competence’ at the fair was a great success among both visitors and exhibitors because many of our body-repair shops and garages work on both cars and trucks. Promoting young

Both concepts are capable of expansion – and represent a significant additional benefit for visitors,” said Peter Börner, president of the German Federation of Body and Automotive Engineering. Siegbert Müller, head of Carbon Sales and CEO of Miracle-Europe GmbH, also supports Automechanika in this respect: “We were one of the sponsors of the new workshops in the Galleria, for which numerous visitors registered in advance of the fair, and we will be happy to help again in the future, if required. For us, Automechanika is a market place unparalleled anywhere in the world. This was our sixth time here because the fair is extremely important for our export business – once again, we have been able to make contacts with people from all around the globe. Naturally, we also made numerous high-quality contacts with visitors from Germany. This year’s Automechanika comple-

mentary programme was bigger than ever before. In addition to established items, such as the Automechanika Innovation Award, the Green Directory and the Automechanika Rally, which attracted over 100 automobile enthusiasts with veteran, classic and tuned cars to the Festhalle on the weekend, there were also several impressive new special shows, e.g., rally, racing and trial trucks on the outdoor area between Halls 9 and 11, training events in metalworking and body painting in the Galleria, special exhibitions and test courses with e-mobiles on the Agora and in front of Hall 10. The e-mobile events were organised by members of the German E-Mobility Association and companies such as Linde Material Handling GmbH. Maik Manthey, vice-president Electronic Systems & Drives: “Many visitors asked what Linde was doing at this fair – the answer was easy and unequivocal: e-mobility is feasible and affordable.” The programme was accompanied by impressive presentations both in

the exhibition halls and on the outdoor areas. “Fairs change and visitors expect a relevant blend of information, events and professional instruction. In times of rapid technological progress in the automobile sector, it is increasingly important to be able to see and test product applications at the fair,” said Braun. This opinion is shared by Rouven Daniel, marketing manager of Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket: “An enthusiastic and 100 per cent positive echo means we can be proud of our presentation in the Forum. From the point of view of our customers from all over the world, ‘more’ is not only a communication concept but also a statement that stands for Schaeffler. ‘More’ also applies to our workshop lecture in Hall 9. With more space and more ‘live technology’ presentations, we responded to the needs of workshops more than ever before this year.” Automechanika continues to be the meeting place for representatives of industry, the workshop business and the trade. However, the German retail trade was also in evidence, as were users. And, for the latter, it is important to have a good concept for the exhibition stand – a concept that combines an event character with the provision of information.” For new exhibitors, such as Dr Jörg Zürner, CEO of Solwash,

the fair was a good opportunity to present his company’s products live: “Here at Automechanika, we were at last able to show numerous operators of self-service carwashes from home and abroad, how they can reduce their energy costs by up to 60 per cent with our equipment.” Regular exhibitors who also take part in Automechanika fairs outside Germany, such as Achim Leitenberger, CEO of Autotestgeräte Leitenberger GmbH, summarised saying, “This year, we achieved all our objectives and succeeded in reaching representatives of the trade from inside and outside Germany. We also noted that a process of concentration is taking place on the fair and exhibition landscape. Everything concentrates on Frankfurt – on Automechanika Frankfurt.” The next Automechanika Frankfurt will be held from 16 to 20 September SSGM 2014. www.ssgm.com

|| RegeneRative BRaking

The New Way to Slow Down Regenerative braking is integral to hybrid and electric vehicles – but it just isn’t a big part of the service story By Andrew Brooks

W

ith the advent of gas-electric hybrid and fully electric vehicles, and their increasing onroad presence, the associated energy management and capture systems have become a major element in automotive servicing. One element of hybrid technology, the slightly misnamed “regenerative braking,” enables the energy normally dissipated during braking in the form of heat to be recaptured as electrical energy that can be used to recharge a hybrid’s or EV’s storage and 12-volt battery systems. The design of regenerative braking systems takes advantage of the fact that electric motors and generators share design elements. Regenerative braking converts the vehicle’s electric motor into a generator. When the brake pedal is applied, the vehicle’s regenerative circuit triggers the motor to operate in reverse, opposing the motion of the wheels and slowing the vehicle down. (Interestingly, an article written in the 1920s described regenerative braking — then used on railways and streetcar systems — as “electronic speed control.”) The electricity generated during this process is used to recharge the vehicle’s storage battery and is also stepped down to charge the vehicle’s 12-volt system. Regenerative braking reduces energy waste. It also significantly cuts down the amount of wear and tear on the components of the vehicle’s hydraulic braking system, which is still very much required, not only because the braking effect of a regenerative system drops off at lower speeds, but also because regenerative braking can only be applied to powered wheels. So traditional fric32 SSGM November 2012

p 32-33 braking.indd 32

tion braking, with all its added weight, complication and waste of energy, is still required to ensure all wheels — powered or not — have braking ability, to provide braking at all speeds, and to serve as a backup to the regenerative system. From a servicing perspective, regenerative braking systems are definitely low-profile, says Hayato Mori, manager of Product Planning for Honda Canada. “There’s nothing to really touch in a regenerative system,” he says. “The term ‘regenerative braking’ is almost a misnomer because it makes it sound like there are special brakes involved — and of course there aren’t. From a servicing perspective, the generator may require servicing depending on how it’s being used and how long

it’s been on the road, but there’s no additional braking mechanism in the wheel or suspension that requires special servicing.” While regenerative braking systems require less servicing than traditional braking systems, the fact that they are relatively “hands off ” — added to the fact that they reduce wear and tear on braking components — can lead vehicle owners, as well as service technicians, to underestimate the need for regular service. This at least has been the experience of Ed Jagt, owner of Pro-Tech Tire & Auto in Barrie, Ontario. “Most of my customers who are Prius owners, I’m lucky to get them in for every other service stop that’s recommended in the manual,” Jagt says.

RegeneRative BRaking || “They’re putting too much faith in the hybrid system, and not putting enough into the old-school mechanical part of it.” The servicing still needs to be done, Jagt says, whether or not the components are being worn as fast.

High endurance

“It’s not unusual to get anywhere from 150,000 to 250,000 kilometres from a set of friction materials” on a vehicle that has regenerative braking, says Al Playter, who teaches in the Automotive and Motorcycle Programs at Centennial College in Toronto. “However, because there’s less usage of the brakes, the technicians have to take extra care to make sure all the moving parts are serviced properly. So service becomes essentially doing a normal brake job but with the difference that you’re not putting parts in.” Playter says that quality garages will disassemble the brake parts at the prescribed service intervals — regardless of their state of optimism about the virtues of regenerative braking, and of course assuming that the vehicle owner bothers to show up — and make sure that the front brake calipers are clean, properly lubricated and moving properly. “You’re doing what’s normally done in a brake job where the rotors or drums in some cases are replaced or machined. The tech now needs to do that but without assuming that replacement will be part of it. They’ll be putting the parts back together a lot more often.” But Playter is quick to note the flip side of that equation. “Shops shouldn’t assume that the regenerative braking is taking such a burden off the friction materials that they don’t have to worry. The hydraulic brakes absolutely do need to function.” As for problems within the regenerative system itself, Playter says these generally have to do with the stator in the generator, as the rotor component consists of a simple magnet, which is only susceptible to direct physical damage, which is unlikely, and not much else. The stator, on the other hand, consists of wiring and connections that can become loose. But in most cases it’s just not practi-

cal to fix the problems that can plague regenerative systems, Playter says. “It’s just more practical to replace the system. But as for the actual motor/generator, if that had to be repaired — which isn’t a usual service item — you’d have it repaired at a shop that does heavy-duty electrical repairs like elevator motors, large industrial motors. That’s way out of the realm of the average technician.” Jagt recalls the early days of regenerative systems, when shops like his were able to get inside the works of regenerative systems such as those on the early Honda Insight. Those days are gone, he says, and now everything is sealed up. But he takes pride in being a one-stop shop, and has been proactive about getting his techs up to speed on hybrid technology, ensuring for example that they have attended the Automotive Career Development Center (ACDC). When it comes to work on regenerative braking units, however, so far Jagt and his technicians have only

been called on to fix loose connections. Beyond that, the solution is replacement, and Jagt says rebuilt systems are so hard to find in Canada that he usually has to order from south of the border. Also, industry experience with the technology is still pretty thin in this country. Jagt has found only two other Canadian shops — one in Red Deer, Alberta and one in Surrey, B.C. — that he can share information and experience with. Al Playter sees regenerative braking systems as occupying a niche similar to alternators and starters, and says that this will limit the ability of most shops to add them to their repertoire. “In our business now there are very few people who overhaul alternators or starters,” he says. “Sure, we show students how to take them apart, but when you overhaul a starter or alternator in the shop, you pick up the phone and ask someone to send you one. Doing the actual work isn’t economical from SSGM anybody’s point of view.”

Constant Contact

Breakthrough telematics technology will help independent shops level the playing field in car care diagnostics and spice up customer relations By Noelle Stapinsky

T

oday, everyone can pretty much do it anywhere they please — at work, in the car or even while they wait for an oil change. Access the Internet, that is. With the explosion of smartphones and tablets, all tethered to data networks, a world of information and communication is at our fingertips 24/7, dramatically changing the way we work, shop and play. And on the service shop floor, it isn’t much different. Technicians are using mobile technology to access databases and online resources for vehicle diagnostics. They’re also accessing online training, ordering parts and purchasing tools. But with the constant advancements in automotive technology — many new vehicles have more than 40 processors running various elements under the hood and in the cabin — OEs are rolling vehicles off the assembly line equipped with embedded telematics technology that employ proprietary coding, making it increasingly

difficult for techs to keep up. What began as a suite of services and technology for safety, 34 SSGM November 2012

p 34-35 Telematics.indd 34

convenience and entertainment — the oldest example being General Motor’s OnStar — has evolved into remote vehicle diagnostics and maintenance management. “Since these technologies are built into the vehicle at the factory, there’s little question about where that information is sent. When the vehicles ‘call home,’ they’re calling the dealer network or the OE car companies,” says Scott Luckett, vicepresident of technology standards and CIO for the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA). “From the perspective of the aftermarket, it’s potentially a rather ominous threat and an opportunity for the relationship an owner has with their vehicle.” Ben Johnson, director of product management for Mitchell 1, says, “The OEs strategy around telematics is to bring the vehicle to the dealership. They’d love it if the driver believed the aftermarket is no longer capable of servicing the vehicle.” For the AAIA, coming up with an aftermarket telematics solution is not about getting into the business of dispatching ambulances and tow trucks, or providing satellite radio and navigation services, but to give independent shops an alternative to OE-based telematics and to give the vehicle owner the freedom to decide with whom their vehicle communicates for maintenance and service needs. Although OE embedded telematics have been somewhat successful in driving business back to their dealerships, Johnson says, “I’ve talked to a lot of

aftermarket shops that say the strategy has backfired a bit because customers will bring in their reports to their preferred shop. It’s becoming a tool for the consumer as well. Certainly the optimal solution for the aftermarket would be if their customer could elect to have that data routed to them, much like if I get an iPhone and choose which network provider I want.” If aftermarket shops could gain access to their customers’ vehicle telematics, they could strengthen their customer relationship, and, more importantly, be able to diagnose engine issues long before the car shows up in the shop bay. For the past couple of years, the AAIA and its members have demonstrated how the aftermarket could use telematics on the AAPEX floor. To take it even further, AAIA launched the inaugural Aftermarket Telematics Challenge — a competition that challenged companies to provide a telematics device for the aftermarket industry that will be commercially viable. Indeed, the easiest way to retrofit a vehicle with a telematics device is through the OBDII port under the driving console. Many companies have developed such devices; most notably the ones used by insurance companies such Progressive’s Snapshot, which plugs into the vehicle’s OBDII port to monitor driving behaviour for userbased insurance rates. But since this port was designed for vehicle diagnostics, the trick for the aftermarket would be to develop a device that is not only capable of monitoring the vehicle, but also allowing remote diagnostics without putting the onboard computer system solely in a diagnostic mode. And the winner of the first www.ssgm.com

TelemaTics || Aftermarket Telematics Challenge, announced at this year’s AAPEX, did just that. In a joint proposal, submitted by Delphi Products and Service Solutions (DPSS) and Aftermarket Telematics Technologies (ATT), the DPSS Connect Car Telematics Solution gives independent service providers the capabilities to compete in the market. “Delphi with ATT demonstrated a carefully executed solution offering value and benefits to every link in the service chain from the parts manufacturer to the consumer,” says Luckett. “In fact, the solution succeeds in educating consumers to the benefits of regular vehicle maintenance.” Delphi engineered an OBDII plugin device that’s powered by ATT’s suite of software solutions. “The device has been successfully road-tested over 50 million miles in tens of thousands of vehicles,” says Lúcia Veiga Moretti, DPSS president. “ATT provides the vehicle owner and service operator a web interface to view vehicle history and alerts, as well as accessing parts and service information from Delphi.” Moretti continues: “Think about this as a device that works like a computer, GPS and a scan tool all-in-

one. Imagine as a car owner having a direct connection with your technicians. With this telematics device, the technician can tell you when you need a maintenance repair with a simple email or text message. Or if your car breaks down, the technician will know where you are, can dispatch a tow-truck and have the part ready for the repair.” If the check engine light comes on, which can happen for a thousand different reasons, a trouble code can be sent to a shop’s management system and a tech can notify the customer by text or email to check that the gas cap isn’t loose. If that’s not the issue, they could do a remote sensor sweep to see what might be failing. And the beauty of having such connectivity with the owner and the vehicle, says Jim Dykstra, president of ATT, “it is the car selling the service to the vehicle owner, telling them what it needs, and tying the vehicle owner to the shop and its service technicians.” And independent shops can also capitalize on this technology by using it to create a personalized maintenance schedule for customers. With such technology, technicians can now understand if the car is being driven in a normal or severe fashion and if it

needs new tires or it’s ready for an oil change, for example. “With telematics, there are marketing dollars that everyone has to spend to attract customers and get them in for service. Right now we’re doing it in a shotgun approach, but this is like a laser scope on a sniper rifle,” says Luckett. The make this technology economically viable, shop owners need to start talking to their suppliers, distribution groups and banner headquarters. To stay competitive with OE dealerships, it’s essential they too have an alternative to offer their customers. But according to Luckett, the roll out of this technology is going to require mass in order to get the cost down. With innovative solutions, such as the Delphi Connected Car, the ultimate cost will be determined by how many people in the supply chain want to co-op it and spend their marketing dollars, but the subscription service for the vehicle owner could be under $10 per month. For shop owners to get their customers on board, Luckett says, “Not many car owners will go out of their way to spend money so that Joe’s garage can be notified of a problem. That’s not a strong value proposition. But as a car owner, if I knew there was a website I could go to and see my driving history, what kind of fuel economy I’m getting and monitor my children’s driving, that’s where the aftermarket can capitalize on telematics. Shops can provide customers with peace of mind and convenience without spending a lot of money.” Let’s face it, consumers want to be connected and with smartphones in almost every pocket, accessing a customer base has never been easier. For an independent shop to offer such a device also means that customers with older vehicles don’t have to spend $40,000 on a new vehicle to get the same capabilities and connectivity. With such a simple plug and play device, shops will be able to optimize their maintenance programs, while serving OEs with a SSGM healthy dose of competition.
