Liqui Moly Grows in Canada Liqui Moly continues to grow. The German lubricant specialist exceeded its record turnover for 2012. During the year, which has just come to a conclusion, the turnover increased by four per cent to $633 million CAD (415 million euros). In Canada, sales increased by 73 per cent. These figures not only make Canada on of the largest markets for Liqui Moly, but also one of the most dynamic for the company. In Canada, the focus is on German import cars requiring special motor oils approved by the automobile makers. In 2013, the company added Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Jamaica to its territories. Liqui Moly products are now sold in over 110 countries. In the upcoming years, the company will be investing nearly 20 million euros, mostly in oil production, to ensure the company is ready for continued growth in the coming years. WORLDPAC, Textar Ultimate Car Enthusiast Experience Contest Textar, a Nisshinbo Group Company, and WORLDPAC recently ran a customer incentive contest culminating in a Porsche aficionado’s dream trip deemed the ‘Ultimate Car Enthusiast Experience of a Lifetime.’ Over 40 specialty import service center winners joined Textar and WORLDPAC on a three-day trip that included a special viewing of the North

ore advanced oils and high-tech fuels, new synthetic media, higher operating temperatures, more complex engine layouts, longer service intervals; the world of the filter – oil and air – is changing as rapidly and confusingly as any part of the automotive industry, and the continuing changes are posing new challenges for service operations. “Over the past decade, improvements in engine design, oil technology and increasing crankcase capacities are driving extensions in the factory recommended oil change intervals,” says Marianne Guldberg, marketing manager for Mann+Hummel Purolator Filters. “As more and more of these new vehicles enter the serviceable market, the oil change drain interval has moved from the standard 3,000 mile mark to some estimates of over 7,500 miles between oil changes.” The increasing average age of, and overall owner investment in, vehicles means that owners are paying more attention to the care of their vehicle. As a result, more drivers are seeking premium and high premium oil filters and oils, Guldberg says. “The challenge is informing consumers about the importance of choosing the right filter for their vehicle and driving needs.”

The Bosch DistancePlus Oil Filter is manufactured with media that Bosch claims is 99.9 per cent efficient in removing dirt and has 300 per cent greater capacity to hold more dirt than conventional oil filters. This filter is designed to perform with synthetic, semi-synthetic or conventional motor oil.

The Mann-Filter and Purolator brands offer filter products for the full range of driving and vehicle needs, Guldberg says. “Each product is designed to meet or exceed recommended service interval as published in the vehicle service manual. As well, Purolator offers a premium product that features a synthetic media component which improves filtration function. Synthetic filters are well matched for modern, fully synthetic oils, but will also optimize the performance of synthetic blended oils or organic oils.” Guldberg lists some of the benefits of synthetic filters: • optimum engine lubrication and reduced fuel consumption • improved protection against premature clogging of the filter • improved engine lubrication Car manufacturers are extending oil change Fram’s Ultra Synthetic filter is made to be used with today’s full synthetic intervals and oil companies are continuing to motor oils. Its dual-layer synthetic media provides up to 15,000 miles of promote synthetic oils for longer life, says John engine protection.

King, director, product management for filtration, batteries and lighting, Automotive Aftermarket Division, Robert Bosch. “As a result, consumers are trading up to synthetic motor oil. With this growing trend, it’s important to offer a filter that is not only designed to utilize synthetic and semi-synthetic oils, but one that provides engine protection for the life of the oil.” King cites the Bosch Long Life Filter, which offers up to 10,000 miles of engine protection. “Bosch recommends that vehicle owners refer to their owner’s manual with regard to oil change intervals. Longer change intervals mean that a filter has to have greater capacity with high efficiency.” The Long Life filter is designed with a dirt capacity of 22 grams and is 99.5 per cent efficient in removing dirt from the oil. “You have to look at oil and oil filters together,” says Edward Covington, vice-president of quality assurance for Wix Filters. “As one changes so does the other. And trends at the OE level may take five to ten years to become trends in the aftermarket.” Covington notes that the move to cartridge-format oil filters means service operations now have to handle two basic different filter change servicing protocols. “On the cartridge side most have a hex nut on the top, and they’re calling for a torque specification on the cap to make sure the cap is fully seated but someone doesn’t overinstall,” Covington says. “Some have serviceable O rings and some don’t. When the car comes in the person doing the change has to know the difference. Some cartridge filters have as many as four O rings, and the installer needs to get these in the proper groove, properly lubricated. We’re now seeing sealing issues crop up due to servicing habits.” “Extended drain intervals are challenging filter makers in two ways,” says Jay Buckley, UCI-Fram technical training director. “Capacity must be increased so that dirt can be trapped and held for the duration of the filter change. It is also requiring filter makers to improve all rubber (O rings and antidrainback valves) by impregnating silicone or complete silicone construction for durability in an extended drain vehicle.” Plain rubber valves will harden after 10,000 kilometres, Buckley says, and accordingly makers are turning to other materials. For example, Fram’s Extra Guard and High Mileage filters have nitrile valves, while Fram Tough Guard and Ultra Synthetic filters have silicone valves. The second major change Buckley cites is the move to cartridge-format filters, motivated by engine design constraints and European waste disposal requirements. Fram has made a major investment to bring cartridge manufacturing in house, Buckley says.

Longer life

The newer synthetic oils, while they’re much more expensive, do protect the engines for a lot longer, and of course the service interval has been extended too, says Rick Greer, business development manager, Filters for Mahle Aftermarket Inc. 14 SSGM March 2014

p 12,14,15 MARCH filters.indd 14

Mahle oil filters use stable pleat geometry for better cold start stability and a pressure relief valve guarantees the oil supply.

“But when you do change the oil, you’ll lose the value of that extra protection if you use a cheap filter, so it’s effectively driven up the cost of the filter too.” “The oils are lasting longer, but the filters don’t necessarily do the same,” says Sam Fritsche, product manager, filtration with Beck-Arnley. “You’ll see people going 12,000 miles without even looking at the filter, and when they come in, if it’s a cartridge filter sometimes when you open it up it’s in pieces. It’s a case of the extended oil life actually being detrimental to the vehicle at that point.” Major filter makers are responding with longer-life synthetic products, Sam Fritsche says. “People will spend more on the synthetic oil which may have a label saying [the oil] will last 15,000 miles – and then without thinking they’ll use the same kind of filter they did before, that’s built to last 3,000 to 5,000 miles.” The challenge is to educate the customer about the benefit of using the higher-end synthetic media filter to go with the premium oil. Jay Buckley points out that Fram uses synthetic and cellulose blended media in its Extra Guard, Tough Guard and High Mileage filter lines. “We use two layers of full synthetic media in the Fram Ultra filter designed for synthetic oil changes. Synthetic media provides great efficiency and greater dirt holding capacity than plain cellulose media.” “There’s a big issue with patents in the aftermarket,” says Sam Fritsche. “The manufacturers are putting a strain on what our suppliers can actually make for us.” The issue is that when aftermarket suppliers follow the normal “form – fit – function” criteria in producing products just as good as the OEM provides, the OEM will respond with legal action if the aftermarket product is virtually identical to its own products. “An example is Toyota’s PET air filter,” says Tom Fritsche, director of product management at Beck-Arnley. “You can get something in the aftermarket that is similar, but whereas the OE product has no plastic at all, the aftermarket part will have plastic in it to hold the frame. The unit works, but it’s not exactly the same as the Toyota product, and as soon as you don’t look the same the installer is going to have questions.”

The Beck-Arnley cabin air filters pictured are for Volvo applications, but can be found in almost every vehicle produced since the mid-to-late 90’s. Particulate cabin air filters are best for stopping dust, pollen and large particles from entering your vehicle’s air system and on into the cabin. Charcoal filters were next on the market and seen as the “premium” cabin air filter. www.ssgm.com

Filters || Wix Filters engineered its XP line of premium oil filters for light-duty vehicles to maximize the performance of synthetic motor oils in the toughest driving conditions -- heavy loads, towing, lots of idling in stop-and-go city driving and harsh driving environments, such as dusty and muddy roads and extremely high temperatures.

Philips Vision, VisionPlus and X-tremeVision upgrade headlights Version 1.1 – 25 October 2013

The response is to educate the installer base, but Tom Fritsche admits it’s a challenge. “We’re providing documentation that tells the installers why the product doesn’t look the same and reassures them that it will still perform the same. Of course they won’t always read the documentation, but at least it’s something we can do.” Cabin air filters first emerged in the mid-1980s; and yet today most folks are unaware of their existence, don’t understand their importance and certainly don’t understand how and when to replace them. Also, many vehicle service professionals are not trained to make this part of routine vehicle service. Moreover, many CAFs are very complex to access or service, discouraging some technicians to altogether avoid this service item. “More than 100 million vehicles on the road in the U.S. today are equipped with cabin air filters,” Mann+Hummel’s Marianne Guldberg says. “Normally, while driving – especially if one happens to suffer from asthma or allergies – the tendency is to roll up the windows to prevent breathing in dirty outside air. However, if the car’s cabin air filter is clogged, the occupants inside could be breathing in six times the contaminants than they would had the windows been down.” Mann+Hummel developed a three-layer cabin air filter that helps eliminate dust, allergens, and other contaminants. The first layer has an anti-allergen function using polyphenol, a natural plant extract, to lock allergens and prevent them from entering the vehicle. A charcoal layer has activated carbon that blocks odor and toxic exhaust gas. The third layer is a dust layer with an anti-microbial function to eliminate bad smells and prevent mold. “We expect cabin air filter sales to Mann+Hummel filters use rise in the next five years for a number of reasons,” says filter elements that have Bosch’s John King. “First, more and more motorists are been specially developed realizing the value of breathing clean air in their vehicles. for use in modern engines. Second, as vehicle manufacturers see consumers’ growing interest in clean air, they are expanding the use of cabin air filters in their new models. Finally, since many consumers don‘t know that their car even comes equipped with a cabin air filter, change service has become an important upsell opportunity for repair shops.” King says that Bosch’s line of Workshop filters feature specially engineered media designed to capture and hold fine particulate pollutants such as dust, soot, pollen, fungus and bacteria. He says the filters can capture 80 per cent of environmental contaminants that are three microns or larger (one micron is a millionth of a meter.) The presence of this relatively new component needs to be part of the discussion when a new car is being sold, but not all new car dealers are doing that yet. The picture is becoming more complex as makers of larger and more upscale models are adding extra cabin air filters for the rear of the car and units that deal only with recirculated air. Again, service operations should educate the customer about the filters and about the possible health consequences in exceeding recommended replacement intervals. SSGM www.ssgm.com

ake a moment and think about how smart phone technology has changed how you work and interact with the world around you. Today’s smart phones access a wide range of tools, applications and databases, and provide instant communication and access to the web. They are so easy to use that children can master a smart phone in a few minutes, much to the astonishment of parents. At last year’s AAPEX/SEMA show, scan tool makers demonstrated new scan tools that took notice of the ubiquity and ease-of-use of today’s smart phones and look to give 16 SSGM March 2014

domestic, Asian and European vehicles. The interface is made to be navigated in the same fashion as one navigates a smart phone, so there is no learning curve or having to drill through multiple menus to reach diagnostic or repair information. “It is simple and fast,” Lipscomb adds. “Encore and Genisys Touch use the AutoDetect feature which automatically detects and alerts the technician of on-tool or web-based repair information. The feature displays the number of potential fixes found, categorized by most likely to fix, to help make repairs faster. “Android being designed for a mobile platform is much faster than Windows-based scan tools,” Lipscomb continues. “The system boots up faster and operates with much www.ssgm.com

less overhead than a traditional scan tool. Android is also a platform with which technicians are already familiar. With it being a dedicated mobile platform, it also provides quick Internet connectivity, putting technician networks and web resources easily accessible in one tool.” Ross-Tech, a provider of diagnostics solutions for VW and Audi vehicles, took the opportunity at AAPEX/SEMA to showcase HEX-NET, a hardware interface that plug into a car’s standard J1962 OBD II port. Once connected, HEX-NET allows a wireless device or smart phone to diagnose the vehicle over a standard Wi-Fi connection. Bruce Ruhf, director of operations and marketing manager with RossTech says the advantage is that any smart device or phone can then become a vehicle diagnostic tool. Enthusiasts and technicians showed a great interest in HEX-NET during AAPEX/SEMA where it was demonstrated on the show floor using an interested person’s own smart phone, regardless if the phone was Windows- or Android-based, or an iPhone. The person would simply use their phone to scan

for the HEX-NET device as a wireless access point. It is the same as looking for the wireless hotspot while sitting in one’s favourite coffee shop. “The move to this kind of device, one that is truly platform independent, was driven at first by our enthusiast customers,” Ruhf says. “Like most people, enthusiasts carry smart phones and they wanted to be able to pull that smart phone out of one’s pocket to check why the ‘Check Engine’ light went on. That was the driving force. Who in this world no longer has access to a smart phone or computing device with wireless access as a standard feature?” Ruhf says that once the smart phone or device connects to the HEX-NET access point, it will automatically connect to RossTech’s popular VCDS Mobile interface and diagnostic software and automatically start to generate vehicle diagnostic information on the device’s web browser. Another advantage of HEX-NET is that more advanced diagnostic functionality can now reside on the Cloud. This allows Ross-Tech to roll out updated diagnostic tools and information faster and more securely to technicians. This move to platform independence has several advantages to shops and its staff for generating repeat business. “Imagine a vehicle owner with [HEX-NET] and they pull the diagnostic data from the device onto their smart device,” Ruhf continues. “They can then send that information immediately to the service facility and have a technician review the information and from that information propose a fix to the vehicle owner, book the needed appointment and order the needed parts and have them at-the-ready when the vehicle comes in. Remote diagnostics is where technology is pushing service operations.” Mike Fitzgerald, vice-president, sales and marketing with Innova Electronics Corp. says that the scan tool market still segments itself between high-end devices and more entry-level devices that offer narrower sets of diagnostic information to a technician. The decision on which tools to purchase is not one that is to be made on feature set alone. “Your shop and technician needs will dictate the features you will need,” Fitzgerald says. “But the needs [of the shop and the technicians], over time will change as vehicles become more complex. Because of this increasing vehicle complexity, shop owners have to understand what their business model is, what kinds of work they need to do and what kinds of work they wish to do . . . and matching the features of the scan tool to that business model.” Innova’s Pro CarScan series of tools are made to solve OBD I (81-95) & OBD II (96 and newer) check engine, anti-lock brake system (ABS) and airbag (SRS) problems, and come with a database of codes in English and French. Philips Windshield Treatment Philips Automotive North America has released its Philips Windshield Treatment Kit, which is designed to improve driver visibility in hazardous conditions. The Philips Windshield Treatment Kit is applied to windshields to help repel rain, snow and dirt, allowing drivers to see more clearly and travel more safely. The Philips Windshield Treatment Kit uses a hydrophobic technology, which is designed to coat the windshield glass and help eliminate items that may obstruct the driver’s field of vision. The coating causes water to bead up and run off. It also makes it easier to remove dirt, sap and bugs. Philips Windshield Treatment lasts for up to six months after application. Unlike other windshield treatments on the market, the hydrophobic technology used in the Philips Windshield Treatment Kit is car wash resistant. The Philips Windshield Treatment Kit can be used by both professionals and do-it-yourselfers. The application process is fast and easy and the kit includes everything needed to properly treat the windshield as well as the other windows in the vehicle. No additional tools are required. continued on page 24

Endless Electrical Woes I

n our business, we see vehicles not as they are but as they were designed seven or eight years ago. We see technology when things begin to break. And today, the things that break are more likely to be body and chassis and electrical components, and less on the mechanical side. When was the last time you rebuilt a steering box? Electric window lifts and locks, however, are a bread and butter item. As vehicles age, I’m surprised at how rarely actuators and motors fail, and how often the problem lies in relays and connectors. Relays I can understand. They are moving parts with contacts that arc and spark with each make/break cycle, especially in high current circuits like wipers. Connectors can be frustrating as hell. I grew up with British cars which used open bullet-type connectors that would corrode on the way home from the new-car dealership. So by the time the machines were out of warranty, dim lights and dead circuits were very common. The lack of weatherproofing was a problem in electrics up until the 1980s when the Japanese began encapsulating critical connectors, which led to GM/ Delphi’s excellent Weather Pack system. I’ve retrofitted Weather Pack connectors on everything from Suzukis to Craftsman riding mowers with excellent results. When we have to work with corroded or grimy underhood connectors, however, my issue is not just with corrosion, it’s the way the plastic housings are molded. These things get greasy and a rough texture and a bigger external size would make these things easier to grip. Then there are the locking tabs. I’ve broken off severa; trying to get the damn things to release, and have often ended up zip-tying the connectors back together again, an ugly and unsatisfying job. We should never have to pry up a tab with a 1/8 screwdriver or squeeze one with channelocks to get it to release. It’s amazing to me that automotive engineers continue to design electrics to frustrate service, even when the changes needed wouldn’t add to the cost of the connector. A manufacturer who shall remain nameless comes to mind, with a heater blower circuit that stays live with the ignition off, draining the battery . . . and another that uses underhood diodes that fail open, nor closed, allowing current to leak back through multiple circuits to create bizarre and almost impossible to understand behavior. Connectors are a common problem, and the unit often fails closed-circuit, with the doors jammed mid-cycle. Reach in there with your hands, and it’s very possible to jog the system into trying to complete the open/ retract cycle, crushing your fingers in the process. That kind of lunacy is thankfully gone, but the frustration of chasing a phantom or intermittent open to some small chassis connector (usually over the fuel tank) is tough to take…and tougher for the customer, who wonders how it can take three hours of labour to replace a five–buck component.

ounterfeiting is a global business. In a report by the International Trademark Association, ‘Strengthening Anticounterfeiting Laws and Procedures in Canada,’ the association puts the estimated global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods at $600 billion and counterfeiting and piracy in Canada at some $20$30 billion annually. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission estimated that counterfeit automobile parts cost the U.S. automotive supplier industry US$3 billion annually in the United States. In February of last year, The New York Times reported that three men were arrested in a scheme to sell counterfeit brake pads and other car parts to repair shops in the city. The seized brake pads were packaged to appear as if they were manufactured by companies as “Ford, General Motors and other leading manufacturers.” Counterfeit brakes were even cited in the most recent debates on strengthening Canada’s copyright and trade-mark protection laws. Bill-56 was a move by the federal government to amend the Copyright Act and the Trade-marks Act by adding “new civil and criminal remedies and new border measures in both Acts, in order to strengthen the enforcement of copyright and trade-mark rights and to curtail commercial activity involving infringing copies and counterfeit trade-marked goods.” During the debate on the bill, Liberal MP Geoff Regan of Halifax West, NS cited the problem of counterfeit brakes getting into the Canadian market and the impact it has on Canadian vehicle owners: “For example, if you take your car to a garage for repairs, it is possible that the brakes installed to replace your old ones will, in some cases, be counterfeit brakes . . . Brakes are another very good example because everyone recognizes and understands the importance of having good brakes and the need for them to be manufactured according to an appropriate standard. If someone obtains counterfeit brakes that do not work properly, the danger is obvious and clear. This can happen.” “If you have a recognized brand in the aftermarket you can be assured that an attempt is being made to counterfeit that product,” says Bill Hanvey, AASA vice-president, programs and members services and staff executive with AASA/ MEMA Brake Manufacturers Council. “No one can give a definitive number on the size or percentages of brakes or

22 SSGM March 2014

other products that are being counterfeited.” While Hanvey would not get into specifics as to which of its members are targets of counterfeit brake friction, “what we do see is that brands that are recognized globally appear to be frequently targeted.” Several major brake friction makers were contacted by SSGM Magazine to talk about counterfeiting. Many decided not to go on the record because of the sensitivity of the subject and not to tip their hand in regards to the work they are doing in combating counterfeits. All said they are vigorously fighting counterfeits and there is ongoing investment in protecting their product brands from being copied. ACDelco, a well-known supplier of aftermarket friction in North America said in an email response to questions sent to its brake team: “We take this issue very seriously and will continue to use strategies and put additional measures in place that deter and thwart counterfeiting. We typically do not share strategies publicly, since it may aid the counterfeiters in countering those strategies.” Hanvey adds that MEMA works closely with all brake friction makers to develop a range of measures to combat counterfeiting, and has an ongoing working group dedicated to fighting counterfeiting. “MEMA created the Brand Protection Committee (BPC) to organize industry action against the trafficking of counterfeit products and to increase protection of intellectual property in the automotive industry,” Hanvey adds. “It meets several times a year both in person and through webinar to discuss the latest issues and trends of parts counterfeiters and is a forum for manufacturers to discuss best practices in counterfeit protection. “These efforts are on top of and in conjunction with our members’ individual efforts evaluating means to improve upon the measures they have in place to recognize counterfeit products.” Ernie Fields, sales manager with ProMax Autoparts Depot, a supplier of brake friction and rotors for the aftermarket, says the ongoing efforts of friction makers to tackle the problem has reduced the amount of counterfeit product www.ssgm.com

getting into the North American market. There are fewer incidents now of someone trying to fake the product and packaging of major friction makers and sell them openly on the market. The introduction of Edge Codes has also helped in reducing counterfeiting. If one takes a close look at brake pad or shoe, there will appear what at first glance looks to be a cryptic set of numbers and letters. This Edge Code is not random. It tells technicians information about the product, including the cold and hot friction levels, for example, and who manufactured the product. That Edge Code is created by engineers, federal entities and industry associations. Fields says the real danger is that when a fake product does get through the consumer is the one who suffers most as the quality of the product is poor and, in regards to brake friction, that poor quality impacts safety and performance. “The danger to the vehicle owner is that the integrity of the product purchased is compromised,” Hanvey adds. “With the likelihood of little to no testing and substandard quality assurance, issues relating to fit, function and performance on the vehicle can be expected.” Because counterfeiting cannot be eliminated entirely, with counterfeiters playing a cat-and-mouse game of trying to always stay one step ahead of the latest means of cracking down on their efforts, how can one protect one’s self from their products? Remember the old adage “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” That is still the best place to start. Often a good tip-off that the Often a good tip-off that product might be a counterfeit is that the brake friciton or rotor is the product might be a being offered to you at a much price or coming from a counterfeit is it is being reduced non-traditional parts supplier at offered to you at a much a significant discount. One should also be vigilant reduced price or coming of vehicle owners who insist they will bring their own parts from a non-traditional because they can get the friction at a cheaper price than what the parts supplier at a service writer will pay to source the parts. significant discount. Technicians should also pay special attention for any signs of variations in size, shape or texture in the friction that could be an indication that the product they are holding is not the real thing. “Working with suppliers who are known to have a good reputation in the business is probably the best start in procuring authentic products,” says Hanvey. “Such suppliers may have measures in place to identify suspect products before they reach the marketplace.” SSGM

Rotary Lift Mach Series Mobile Column Lifts While rise and descent times are important numbers to consider when selecting a vehicle lift, other features that speed up the setup process can have an equally significant impact on boosting shop productivity. Mach series mobile column lifts from Rotary Lift not only raise vehicles faster than comparable mobile column lifts, but they are also built to maximize operator efficiency and reduce downtime. Each column in a Mach series mobile column lift is equipped with identical patentpending controls, so the technician can operate the entire lift from the column that is most convenient. The easy-to-understand control panel features an intuitive graphic layout of the column setup with a vehicle illustrated for reference. When setting up the lift, the technician simply positions a column, turns it on and presses the button that corresponds to the column’s position on the control graphic. LEDs show the power, synchronization and status of each column. When all LEDs are green, it means the columns are synchronized and ready for lifting. Honda Civic A By Wayne Pasicznyk, Identifix Asian Specialist,

I

n the late 1990s, Honda automobiles started using a blower motor power transistor to control the speeds of the blower motor instead of the traditional blower motor resistor. Now, when the blower motor power transistor fails, the air conditioning (A/C) compressor will become inoperable. When the blower motor does not operate on later model A/C systems, the heater control panel will set a code which in turn shuts off the request for A/C compressor operation. If you are not familiar with this problem, you may waste time trying to diagnose the compressor operation. When a later model Honda comes into your shop with no power to the A/C compressor clutch, verify that the relay and fuses are good, and then check to see if a scan tool indicates the A/C request is off. To save time, first check the heater control panel for codes. When a code is indicated, diagnose the code before testing the A/C request circuit (our 28 SSGM March 2014

p 28,29 Identifix .indd 28

Direct-Hit Hotline Archives explain how to check the A/C system for codes). If there are no codes present, continue testing the A/C request circuit as usual. If there is a code for the blower motor circuit and the blower motor does not work on any or all of the speeds, testing the blower motor power transistor and the blower motor circuit is the first step in repairing the A/C problem. The blower motor power transistor is located in the same place as the blower motor resistor used to be. Most blower motor power transistors have four wires, but there are some systems that use three wires and have a separate relay for high speed. With either system, the blower motor circuit testing is the same. To test the blower power transistor circuit: V erify that there is battery voltage to the blower motor on the blue/white wire. If so, ground the blue/black wire at the blower motor and verify the blower motor operates.

If the blower motor is good, jump the blue/black wire at the blower motor power transistor to the black wire and verify the blower motor operates; this tests the blower motor wiring and also indicates the black wire of the power transistor has a good ground. N ext, test the blue/yellow wire at the blower motor transistor; this is the command from the heater control panel/climate control unit. When the heater control panel is on and is trying to operate the blower motor, it should output a voltage on the blue/yellow wire to the base of the blower motor power transistor. The transistor then turns on and provides a ground for the blower motor. The more voltage the heater control panel outputs, the faster the blower motor should operate. I f there is voltage on the blue/yellow wire and the blower motor does not operate, the blower motor power transistor is faulty (some heater control panels will only output voltage for a few seconds and then set a code). A nother test is to remove the blue/yellow wire from the power transistor connector and apply battery voltage to the blower motor power transistor for a very short period of time. If the blower motor does not operate, the power transistor is faulty. If there are no blower motor control problems, testing of the A/C request circuit will be necessary. On 2001 to 2005 Civics, the A/C request circuit is a reference voltage that is sent out from the multiplex control unit to the heater control panel. The request voltage passes through the A/C pressure switch (and on some model years, an A/C thermal protector) and then to the heater control panel. The reference voltage is 5 to 12 volts and will not light a test light. The heater control panel grounds the request circuit to indicate A/C compressor operation has been requested. Once the multiplex control unit sees the voltage go below one volt (or to ground), it will then send a signal to the engine control module (ECM)

3

www.ssgm.com

p 28,29 Identifix .indd 29

to turn on the A/C compressor clutch relay. To correctly test the circuit, start at an easily accessed point in the circuit, such as the A/C pressure switch. Unplug the switch and use a digital volt ohm meter to test for the reference voltage on the blue/white wire (2001 Civic) or the red wire (2002-2005 Civic). If the reference voltage is present, ground the circuit with a jumper wire with the engine running to see if the A/C compressor and fan operate. If so, the circuit is good to that point. If there is no voltage, check for an open wire in the harness or a poor connection at the multiplex control unit. On a 2002 to 2005 Civic, also check for an open circuit in the A/C thermal protector. If the A/C compressor operated when the request circuit wire was grounded, verify the A/C pressure switch is good and that there is pressure in the system. Then check the blue wire to the heater control panel in the dash by grounding it at the heater control panel and checking for A/C compressor operation. If grounding the blue wire did not make the compressor operate, check it for an open between the pressure switch and the control panel. If grounding the blue wire at the control panel did make the compressor operate, the control panel may be faulty. Test all the inputs to the heater control panel before replacing it. The most important thing to remember when testing the A/C request circuit is: never apply battery voltage to this circuit. This could result in damage to the heater control panel or the A/C thermostatic switch, and in some cases, even the engine control module could be damaged. This will help simplify some air conditioning diagnostics on the next Honda Civic that lands in your shop. SSGM

Dewalt Compressor Dewalt announced the introduction of the 200 PSI Quiet Trim Compressor – model DWFP55130 – for professional users. The Dewalt 200 PSI Quiet Trim Compressor features a 2.5 gallon tank that delivers 3.0 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) at 90 pounds per square inch, and is rated to 200 max PSI. The ability to deliver both 3.0 SCFM and max 200 PSI allows the compressor to fire many nails with a quick recovery time. The durable, oil-free pump provides maintenance-free operation. Jobsites can already be loud enough, so Dewalt has engineered the compressor to have an incredibly low 71.5 dBA operating noise level. On top of this, the efficient motor only draws 12 amps, providing easy start-up and reducing the possibility of tripping a breaker. Dewalt www.dewalt.com

Rotary Lift Mach Series With a minimal investment in just two Rotary Lift Mach series mobile columns and a Rotary Lift truck frame adapter kit, vehicle service professionals can affordably add a versatile 12,000 lb. or 15,000 lb. capacity lift to their shops. The easy-to-use frameengaging adapter kit transforms a pair of mobile columns into a fore-and-aft lift that’s perfect for servicing Class 3 and most Class 4 trucks. Mach series mobile column lifts can be moved for use throughout the shop, take up little space and, with a truck frame adapter kit, provide complete access to the wheels and sides of the vehicle. All Mach series lifts include Rotary Lift’s patented control system, which speeds up the setup process by eliminating the need for a master column. A four-column configuration can be reduced to a two-column configuration and programmed for paired lifting with the push of a button. Rotary Lift www.rotarylift.com www.ssgm.com

Penray’s Total Diesel Fuel System Cleaner is helpful in dissolving and preventing the formation of asphaltenes in diesel fuel, while cleaning other deposits and contaminants from the fuel system. The presence of water and sludge in diesel fuel can contribute to the formation of tar-like asphaltenes. This substance can develop with many current fuel formulations, particularly so with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel (ULSD) and bio-fuels which can lack the aromatic solvents that were previously part of diesel fuel blends. And the growth of asphaltenes is exacerbated by newer, hotterrunning engines, and operation in warmer climate conditions. Benefits of this innovative Penray product include greatly extended fuel filter life, as well as that of injectors and other precision fuel system components. As such, maintenance costs are reduced, and fuel economy is increased. Penray www.Penray.com www.ssgm.com

Bosch Iridium Pin to Pin Spark Plugs

Ratcheting Open End Box Wrench Set

Bosch has added “Pin to Pin” designs to its OE Fine Wire Iridium spark plug program, designed to provide better ignitability, especially in today’s high-tech engines. The new Bosch pin to pin spark plugs have a fine-wire tipped center electrode and a fine-wire pin on the ground electrode – the pin to pin design allows for better ignitability in engines optimized for this design, and requires less firing voltage. These high-performance spark plugs are tailored to match the OE design spark plugs of specific Asian vehicles, primarily Hyundai, Infiniti, Kia, Lexus, Suzuki and Toyota vehicles equipped with high-tech engines. The pin to pin Bosch Iridium utilizes fine-wire technology and has a 360-degree continuously laser-welded iridium center electrode made from a proprietary iridium alloy with application specific spark location. It also features an iridium-platinum inlay laserwelded into the tapered ground electrode along with a fine wire electrode tip – aligned with the center electrode tip – to provide top performance and durability for modern engines for up to 100,000 miles.
