Not holding one’s breath for all-electric vehicles I By Tom Venetis, Editor
Plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles are certainly, in terms of technological progress, the next logical step. It is more efficient and clean, but still a ways off.
n mid-July, the Premier of Ontario announced that his government would provide up to $10,000 in subsidies to people who decide to purchase an electric vehicle. The idea behind the subsidy is to have plug-in or electric vehicles making up some 20 per cent of all the vehicles on Ontario roads by 2020. While many complained about this move, in reality, the Ontario government was only following the path set earlier by the U.S. government where American consumers are now offered US$7,500 towards the purchase of alternative propulsion vehicles. In Europe, the German government has in place a scrappage program, giving people a substantial refund if they abandon their older cars and buy a new, more fuel-efficient one. New car sales in Germany have increased as a result. I’m not going to enter into a debate on the merits of this approach (as I only have some 500 words to work with and I’ve already used up 162). I will only again say that the Ontario Premier is following the path set out by others; and the fact that the provincial government has invested heavily in the domestic auto industry, along with the federal government. There is another reason for this move on the part of the Ontario and U.S. governments: the shift to electric vehicles is not going to be easy. Right now, the most successful new car technology is the gasoline-electric hybrid; and the technology is improving. Plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles are certainly, in terms of technological progress, the next logical step. It is more efficient and clean, but still a ways off. The General Motors Volt is still not available, although it should be coming soon. Only then can we see if the hype surrounding its development was well worth the wait. There are other hurdles as well. The battery technology needed to extend the range of these all-electric vehicles has a way to go before it can offer the range and reliability of even the most inexpensive gasoline-only powered cars. There is a lot of talk about a battery breakthrough, with ZENN Motor Company proclaiming it is on the verge of one with EEstor, a battery maker start-up in Texas. At this time, nothing has appeared and there is a great deal of skepticism in the scientific and engineering community about EEstor’s claims for its still unseen and untested EESU technology. This Ontario subsidy, and the one in the United States, is largely an effort to help the all-electric technologies survive by getting consumers to become early adopters. The makers of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles are complaining about the move, as car buyers don’t get a monetary break for buying their vehicles. But they may not have to worry too much. As a commercial enterprise, all-electric cars have, as of right now, a greater chance of failure than success.

Federal-Mogul develops fuel cell gasket technology
Federal-Mogul has developed a new gasket technology to assist in fuel cell development for energy-efficient vehicles. Federal-Mogul’s patented Liquid Elastomer Moulding (LEM) gaskets are constructed with small engineered elastomeric beads moulded onto thin carriers that provide superior sealing performance while significantly reducing the size and weight of each fuel cell stack. Each LEM gasket can be 0.3-0.5 mm thick, whereas the conventional moulded gasket measures at least double that. A typical fuel cell stack is comprised of several hundred fuel cells; each cell contains an ion exchange membrane and bipolar plates. An electrochemical reaction takes place on the surface of these membranes to combine hydrogen with oxygen releasing electrical energy and water as a by-product. As a result, each membrane must be sealed from the other layers and from the external environment. Each fuel cell stack requires hundreds of bipolar plates and membrane elements which need to be sealed, thereby requiring hundreds of gaskets, adding length and weight to each fuel cell stack. According to Federal-Mogul, their patented LEM gasket technology has been estimated to be at least half of the thickness of other gaskets. Additionally, the LEM technology offers the potential to directly incorporate the gasket into the bipolar plates offering further reduction in assembly complexity. “Federal-Mogul’s LEM gasket provides a unique sealing technology, offering one of the smallest sealing cross-sections and lowest load to seal in the industry,” said Gerard Chochoy, senior vice president, Federal-Mogul powertrain sealing and bearings. “Our sealing technology can contribute to a more optimized fuel cell package and reduced weight which can support fuel cell technology to become more widely accepted.” www.ssgm.com

Is there an upside to Canada’s dealer downsize? Dealer consolidation isn’t going to hurt your business, but careful study should be taken to determine whether orphaned customers are worth the expense to acquire. By John Nelligan, executive vp John Pineo, president CMG Marketing
I
n May, General Motors announced they will be closing 42 per cent of their dealer locations over the coming months in an ongoing effort to control costs, reduce brand spread and focus resources on more efficient locations (this number may be even higher by the end of 2010). And with the contraction in the auto industry continuing, we may see additional closed locations across other vehicle manufacturers. Conservatively, this may represent as many as 5,000 dealer service bay closings across the country. Mainstream media has focused largely on the impact to small and rural communities, despite the fact that some announcements have specifically stated that there would be an urban focus to the reductions. The mainstream media has also ignored the impact these closings may have on the independent aftermarket and for the surviving dealers. Conversely, trade media has suggested there will be increased demand in the traditional aftermarket as orphaned vehicle owners look for alternative service providers. And while the traditional aftermarket as a whole may benefit, the impact on individual shops may not even be noticed. Because of this, it would be prudent to consider the entire environment surrounding this downsizing before jumping in with an active (and potentially expensive) customer recruiting program.

Business Outlook || Here are some factors to consider: It is true that there will be upheaval. Service demand is not what’s contracting. Demand is driven by vehicles on the road and, the fact is, that demand is currently fairly stable. While some feel the economic downturn has reduced demand recently, these customers will eventually return to service their vehicles. As well, anecdotal evidence would suggest the global economic downturn has not affected the independent aftermarket as severely as other sectors. This contraction is driven by factors outside of the “servicing” sector – namely new vehicle sales. So there will be ‘orphaned’ customers who will have to find a service provider. The orphaned market will segment – likely by vehicle age (driven by warranty).
Orphaned vehicle owners will not act en masse. In fact, they could be categorized into three broad fragments: Dealer dependants – Those who feel compelled to return to dealers for inwarranty vehicles Dealer loyalists – Those who have always preferred to return to the dealer even after their warranty has expired Floaters – Those who are ambivalent about choosing their service provider but who may find any number of shops to service their vehicle in the future Some in-warranty customers will want the dealer experience, and will be reluctant to take their vehicle to the independent channel. Conversely, out-of-warranty customers who have been loyal to the OE channel may find it inconvenient to travel to a dealer for service. These floaters may consider another dealer but just as easily choose a local general service and repair facility outside the OE channel. www.ssgm.com
Surviving dealers will be operating at capacity. Surviving dealers will now be handling their current customer base (both warranty and non-warranty) plus orphaned customers from those closed dealers. One of the consequences of operating at or above capacity is the stress placed on customers’ satisfaction levels. An upside to this is that a contraction ‘echo’ may occur if OE dealers are unable to schedule, service and satisfy their expanded base of customers. This would be caused by dissatisfied customers moving from one dealer to another and then to the independent aftermarket looking for a better “service” relationship. More important from the perspective of the independent aftermarket is that dealers may face scheduling challenges and some of these customers may look for an alternative, nonOE service providers. These vehicle owners may be forced directly into the traditional aftermarket out of a “capacity” squeeze. Fewer OE Service departments but … not necessarily fewer high-tech service departments. Many of the dealerships closing are now looking at their options for redefining their own businesses. Some of those options include continuing to sell used cars as well as staying in the repair business. This means that local competition may not go away – they may just trade under a different sign, but with a built-in customer base for service. The question remains – Can these former dealers attract the clientele they need to sustain their repair facility business when they no longer have warranty work as their anchor? In order to do this, they will have to continue to invest in their relationship marketing programs to attract customers back for regular maintenance – including some of your existing customer base. Without the massive spend of the OE
Manufacturer behind them, they will need to compete for the attention of consumers just like the rest of the independent aftermarket. The forgotten casualties. One of the most ignored consequences of dealer contraction will certainly be the vehicle owner. Vehicle owners who have been returning to dealers will have to re-establish a relationship with unknown owner/operators. Repair facilities may want to consider employing their own highly targeted marketing strategies to pull in orphaned customers who may be sitting on the “fence” of indecision about where to go to have their vehicles serviced. Making the decision to attract these “fence” sitters should happen carefully – and sooner than later. How do you determine if you can attract any of these orphaned customers? Is your local area affected by the closing of an OE dealer? Remember, you don’t need a list of all dealers closing across Canada, but you do need to find out if the dealer down the street is closing its doors after 40 years. Most shop owners have a good sense whether a local dealer is closing. Will other OE dealers within your area be able to pick up the slack? After the dust has settled, remaining OE dealers may be working hard just to satisfy his or her current customer base. Therefore, taking on an additional 10 bays worth of demand from a neighbouring dealer may cripple their current service levels and satisfaction scores, and may result in dissatisfying a customer base that might very well be “highly satisfied” — and so, in this particular instance there may be an opportunity here for you. Even if you can handle the demand, can you handle their demands? Not only do the OEs provide a wide range of services, they have also had easier access to technology and training for the newer car park. The orphaned customer base will come August 2009 SSGM 11
|| Business Outlook with high expectations based on their past OE service experience — from courtesy car programs, shuttle service, and access to diagnostic information, knowledge and parts availability. On the upside, the increase in demand is more likely to come from domestic vehicle owners, so factors like parts availability and access to repair infor mation is probably already available to you. A little different than if Volks wagen was closing dealerships. How much demand are we talking about? Only one automaker so far has announced a major dealership consoli dation. But as restructuring continues across the industry we could see as many as 500 less dealer locations across all manufacturers. This could represent as many as 5,000 service bays being removed from the OE dealer network over the next few months and into 2010. At about 2.5 service incidents per day, and over a 250-day year, this would mean that just over three mil lion service incidents per year have been “orphaned.” Inside The Numbers While this may seem like a very large chunk of business that poten tially could flow into the independent aftermarket, consider that 20 per cent of the car park is in the one- to three-
year age range, which would place it in the in-warranty “dealer dependant” category. So there is a low likelihood that many of those vehicle owners will change their current habit of visiting a dealer for repairs and service. Moreover, the remaining vehicle owners in the “out-of-warranty” cat egory have already exhibited a prefer

ence for dealer servicing. So, even if they are now “on the market” they may seek out an OE dealer first before considering the independent aftermar ket. If 50 per cent of these Dealer “loyalists” travel that extra mile to establish a relationship with a new OE dealer, we could be looking at only 40 per cent of the market considering the independent aftermarket. Spread these “floaters” or remaining one mil lion plus service incidents across major urban centres and we could see a sig nificant up-tick collectively in business for the aftermarket. When looking at the top 10 urban centres in Canada, over 90 per cent of general service shops are within 4 km of at least one OE dealer. So competi tion is localized around dealers. And as dealerships close, the competition can be intense. In Toronto alone, dealers have an average of 30 shops within two km of their locations – and 50 more shops if you consider a simple drive time radius of four km from dealer locations. If a dealer closes within close prox imity to your shop, then one can see Business Outlook page 18 www.ssgm.com

High-Mileage Motor Oils As people hold onto their cars longer, high-mileage oils offer a profit centre for independents
I
t comes as no surprise that people are holding onto their vehicles longer than they were a few short years ago. In 2008, the median age of passenger cars on the roads in the U.S. was 9.4 years, higher than the previous two-year high of7:53 9.2 years. Noco/AB/JOB 8/4/09 AM Page 1 R.L. Polk & Co., which produced the report that was cited by both American and Canadian news media, found the medium age for all trucks
in 2008 rose to 7.6 years from 7.3 in 2007, and light trucks increased to 7.5 years in 2008 from 7.1 in 2007. Not surprisingly, the study’s consultant put this increasing vehicle age down to the growing anxiety people are feeling about the troubles in the economy. “The current economic environment, coupled with high gas prices last spring and summer, have resulted in consumers delaying purchases of vehicles because their discretionary income has fallen,” wrote Dave Goebel, solutions consultant for R.L. Polk & Co.’s aftermarket team. “Based on the uncertainty of what the future holds consumers are trying to keep

their current vehicles running longer, until their confidence improves.” The report concluded that in such bad economic times, “consumers could feel as though paying a repair expense to keep the vehicle going for a year is more sensible or affordable than a monthly vehicle payment over an extended period of time.” This trend, seen here in Canada as well, should be good news to independents. The potential for increased revenues and improved profits are to be had for those independents that can begin selling even simple kinds of work as preventative maintenance and charging a premium for the service. As the Polk study points out, an investment in keeping an existing vehicle running smoothly is more cost-efficient than buying or leasing a new vehicle for the consumer. One place to start is with the simple oil change, a place where car owners are going to look first to help extend their vehicle’s investment and where independents can begin to educate car owners on the different kinds of motor oils available and what these oils do.
High-mileage oils are a profit centre
Like everything else in the world, a car ages and changes over time. Systems that once worked well begin to slowly wear and efficiencies are lost. A car engine is no different. Over time, age and the many tens of thousands of kilometers driven begins to take a toll on the engine’s various parts. Knowing this, oil makers have begun to develop a range of highmileage motor oils to meet the specific demands of older vehicles. Thom Smith, technical director of branded lubricants for Valvoline, says his company developed the Max Life motor oil after purchasing and examining engines in older vehicles. After tak-

mileage oil is recommended. As an engine operates there are contaminate particles which need to be kept away from the engine parts. High-quality motor oil contains detergents that keep those particles suspended in the oil and away from the engine parts. Problems start when those particles begin to build up and settle on the engine parts. Over time that sludge builds up and the customer notices such things
as loss of oil pressure or reduced gas mileage for instance. “One thing all high-mileage oils will have are seal conditioning agents,” says Mark Ferner, team leader with Shell Lubricants, makers of Pennzoil. “In an older engine, where some of the rubber seals or gaskets have started to dry up (due to age) and cause leaks, these additives are there to make sure the seals remain soft and pliable, which,

ing them apart, several things became apparent. “One of the big things we found is that seals had begun to shrink and grow brittle,” Smith says. When the seals become brittle, drivers will notice their vehicles will begin consuming more motor oil than before or they may see smoke coming out of their tailpipe. A more telltale sign, and one that proves annoying to anyone who parks their car in the home garage, is the growing spots of oils beneath the car where they park. Another thing found was sludge. Customers often have difficulty understanding what sludge is until it is too late and the engine becomes gummed up by that mess. Brian Shaw, Canadian sales manager for Noco Lubricants, says anyone in the 1970s who tinkered with engines, like he used to with great enthusiasm, knows how it was quite common to open up an engine back then and see it junked-up with sludge. While less common with today’s engines and high-quality oils, sludge build-up has not gone away. So this is a great time to explain what it is, why regular oil changes are needed, and why the switch to high-

in turn, helps reduce oil leaks. These agents also help with the O-rings at the top of the engine and help keep oil from getting down the valve stem.” Ferner says another key feature of high-mileage oils, and one that should be emphasized to customers, is the viscosity of the oils. In high-mileage motor oils the viscosity is thinner in order to contribute to fuel efficiency. This seemed to go against the traditional wisdom that when engines got older and the number of kilometers began getting up past 75,000 or even 100,000 km, that it was then time to switch to a thicker motor oil. “In the past, if you had an engine that was consuming oil, the default position was to put in a thicker oil to try and slow down the oil consumption,” Ferner continues. Instead, the oils are formulated so that the viscosity PROOF levels are thinner to provide improved fuel efficiency, but the oil is also forClient mulated in such a way so that the thinner viscosity acts in a similar fashion if ______________ the oil were thicker. where the higher cost of these oils can be factored into the price of a premium oil change,” says Dan Peterson, technical director with Amsoil Inc. Again, referring to the R.L. Polk & Co. study, people are keeping their vehicles longer and they are willing to invest more in keeping their vehicle operating properly, rather than taking on the cost of a new vehicle. Simply put, people are going to willingly pay more for a high-priced oil change if it is sold to them as something that helps maintain the value of their vehicle. By educating them on what happens to a vehicle as it ages, the need to keep such things as seals and gaskets operating properly, and how a high-quality motor oil can improve a vehicle’s longevity, it will make the sale of such an oil change that much easier. “All specialty oils are profit centres for independents,” adds Noco’s Shaw. “The smart independents know that there are things people need for their vehicles, and independents have an opportunity to explain the benefits of using high-quality, high-mileage oils in a preventative maintenance package and improving their profits from that. || Business Outlook Business Outlook from page 12 assume this may represent six to seven thousand service incidents per year. However, just to bring in your fair share of these orphaned incidents, when spread across 50 other repair facilities within four kms of the dealership may mean an increase of 150 service incidents per year or about three incidents per week – if you can attract the average. Better to aim high, if you take action so that another shop in your area doesn’t beat you to the punch. If there is a concentration of dealer closings in your area, then take advantage of it. Urban concentration of the consolidation may be enough to drive increased demand right into your shop. Employing a highly targeted mail drop campaign can help you build your business in this area. But careful analysis of your customer data, your strengths and weaknesses in local neighbourhoods around your shop, and the strength of your word of mouth marketing will all be determinants of your success in

acquiring these customers. And with lower satisfaction scores for all OE service departments (not just the domestics), orphaned customers are just one other reason for you to consider acquiring customers at this time. Whatever you do to attract these new customers, always remember that this is a special situation where these customers, while looking for a repair
facility, are still highly committed to their previous technician – the OE dealer. Their previous technician just happens to be closed now. In their mind, the only casualty of contraction of the OE dealer network is themselves as they are forced to search for a new service centre. So ultimately they will be looking for the same amount of service and respect that they received elsewhere. SSGM

|| Filters Update
Filters Update The new filter technology out there on the market today By David Halpert, Assistant Editor
R
eplacement and preventative maintenance on filters has always been a significant portion of a garage’s routine business. For the independent service technician, the oil change remains one of the key services vital to the lifeblood of any service station, alongside the maintenance of other filters (engine air filters, cabin air filters, etc.). As filter technology improves the screening of contaminants, allowing for less frequent replacements as well as extended drain intervals, the challenge then becomes how to sell a service where replacement is not required as often. Similarly, as consumers retain their vehicles longer, the need for a proper functioning filter is important in maintaining vehicle efficiency, performance and fuel economy; and knowing what new filter technologies and improvements are out there on the market today is crucial for an independent to maximize profit.
sible for horsepower. In this particular case, you get eight more horsepower just by replacing the element and you’re not even taking apart the air intake system. What we wanted to do was not just meet OE specifications, but in this case it is a classic example of exceeding OE specs.” It’s no secret that the media inside an oil filter determines that oil filter’s efficiency, performance and usefulness during its life. Whether your filter uses the traditional “paper” media or the more recent “depth” type
media its effectiveness is determined by several factors, including dirt-holding capacity, resistance to oil flow, and particle size retention (or filtration efficiency).
Improved filter media, improved vehicle performance
K&N Engineering recently added to its innovative Power Cube air filter line for the Dodge Ram 2500 & 3500 heavy-duty pickup (2007-2009 models) for the 5.9L L6 Diesel engine. The filter is designed to replace the OE flat panel with a 3D-type oversized air filter that fits directly into the factory air box. This fills the otherwise empty space with a larger four-sided air filter on specific applications. “What happens is you get a higher air flow and a lot more dust holding capacity. In most cases our replacement elements get you about one to four more horsepower just by replacing the element,” says Renard Howard, business development manager for K&N Engineering. “Now, I’m not talking about the intake system respon-

Filters Update || As filter technology improves the screening of contaminants, allowing for less frequent replacements as well as extended drain intervals, the challenge then becomes how to sell a service where replacement is not required as often.
“In general, we use a cellulose/ synthetic blend which allows us to optimize both the efficiency of the filter as well as the filter’s capacity for holding contaminants,” says Wayne Smith, product manager for Wix Filters. “Cellulose fibres are natural fibres and tend to have good strength and help improve capacity. Synthetic fibres are man-made and can be produced with a smaller thickness than cellulose fibres which helps improve efficiency.” In the first quarter of 2009 alone, Wix Filters added 87 new product numbers across light duty, heavy duty and industrial applications. Filters for foreign nameplate applications topped the list, with more than 35 new air, oil, cabin air and fuel filter product numbers for such brands as Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen, among others.
Rebranding classics, new improvements
But it’s not just the filter that determines the duration of an oil or air filter, or the need for an extended drain interval. Driving habits of the consumer also contribute to how manufacturers recommend maintenance intervals. Stop-and-go driving, frequent short trips, and towing are just some of the factors engine makers use when characterizing “normal” and “severe” engine use. This becomes important when dealing with extended drain intervals

between changing the oil and filter. “Two points bear mentioning on the subject of extended oil change intervals. First, while the additives in ‘extended life’ engine oils may, indeed, last longer, (but) they don’t alleviate the gradual build-up of water, raw gasoline, and other materials that can accumulate in a crankcase. So extending oil and filter changes, even with special oils, may not be a good idea,” says Ramon Nuñez, director of filtration for Purolator. If you were to look at an oil/air filter now compared to one manufactured several years ago you’d discover that from the outside not much has changed. However, improvements have been made within to accommodate advances in engine and vehicle design as well as more demanding operating environments. Nuñez goes on to explain the more technical aspects of filters and what impact they have on new vehicle design.
“Today’s oil filters must have media, seals, and bonding agents that are fully compatible with all popular conventional and synthetic oils,” Nuñez continues. “They must accommodate new oil chemistry that has seen levels of zinc (ZDDP) reduced and, in some cases, supplanted by other, more eco-friendly materials. Oil filters must also perform reliably with oil viscosities ranging from the traditional 10W30 and 10W-40 to ultra-low-friction 0W-20 oils. As a result, the design, construction, and materials in oil filters have all seen enhancements over the last few years.” In a new rebranding initiative, Purolator recently changed the name of its standard line of oil and air filters from Purolator PremiumPlus (sometimes referred to simply as ‘Purolator’) to Purolator ‘Classic’ in an effort to reflect the company’s long-standing reputation of quality and reliability when it comes to aftermarket filters. In addition to each line having its own unique packaging, each provides a different level of engine protection when compared to the leading economy filters on the market.
This change in branding has been added to its packaging, sales and marketing brochures, Web site, as well as other Purolator promotional materials. But what does the change mean for technicians? In terms of the actual product — very little. “The new design is consistent with that of the premium PureONE line and works well for the target customer who is looking for both quality and value,” continues Nuñez, “For professional service technicians, the rebranding to Purolator ‘Classic’ creates a sense of comfort and confidence about using a product line they have come to rely upon and associate with the quality and advanced technology of PureONE.” Fram takes a different approach to its oil filters by segregating its product category into three distinct lines (Extra Guard, Tough Guard and Xtended

The Xtended Guard, for instance, is capable of quality filtration for up to 16,000km when used with synthetic motor oil under normal driving conditions. Joan Kent, channel marketing specialist for Honeywell CPG Canada, goes on to explain the differences behind the media located within each one. “The Fram Extra Guard oil filter features a cellulose- and glass-blended filter media that helps improve efficiency without sacrificing performance. The Fram Tough Guard filter uses an intertwined synthetic blend media that also contains cellulose and glass. It’s thicker and has a greater percentage of synthetic fibers. Beyond the Cabin-Air Filter
While cabin air filters are designed to capture airborne contaminants such as soot, dirt, pollen, and other pollutants that enter a vehicle’s cabin through its heating, air conditioning and defrosting system, modern HVAC systems trap more moisture than in the past, creating a habitat for mould, mildew, and bacteria to be regularly blown into the passenger cabin and colonize where moisture collects. To deal with this problem UView Ultraviolet Systems Inc. created its Mist Solution, a portable 12V ultrasonic unit designed to give technicians an added preventative service. The unit utilizes a nanodroplet delivery system that circulates through the vehicle’s HVAC system significantly reducing the amount of contaminants and bacteria present (in particular, mould).

Piezoelectric Injectors By Chuck Carman; Curriculum Developer CARS While many of us are familiar with the use of piezoelectric materials in the automotive industry in the past few years, a new twist has been added and is making its way to our shop floors. As we are aware, piezoelectric material will produce an electrical charge when compressed or distorted. This property is used in the knock sensors to monitor for detonation. However, this effect can be reversed. If an electrical charge is applied to the material, it will produce a rapid expansion of its physical geometry. This property is now being used to very quickly and very accurately fire fuel injectors. The expansion can be precisely repeated much better than using electro-magnetic solenoid style injectors. This allows for better fuel metering and thus lower fuel consumption and emissions. Currently, this injection process is seen mostly in diesel applications but, it is also finding its way into the gasoline engine as well—where it is used in place of multiple aperture injectors on direct injection engines. The centre mounted injector can open, unseat the needle and direct a precise amount of fuel towards the spark plug in short easy-to-ignite durations of 0.0002 seconds—which can be further tailored to adjust the density of the charge. This allows the use of flat-top-style pistons rather than relying on wallguided pistons which deflect the injected fuel back up at the spark plug. The use of this style of injector in diesel engines has allowed engineers to improve power output, fuel economy, and emission levels while reducing noise levels. Due to the exceptionally quick ON / OFF action, the spray time and amount of fuel injected can be rapidly adjusted for any requirement. Being more than twice as fast as solenoid injectors, the injection process can be divided up into five to seven injection events per combustion cycle. The injectors can generate a considerably finer atomized fuel spray at injection pressures greater than 23,000 psi. The injectors are made up of four primary sections: the piezoelectric actuator, the hydraulic coupler, the control valve and the injector nozzle. Located in the top portion of the injector body is the piezoelectric actuator, which includes a piezoelectric stack, a pushing pin and the electrode wires. The piezoelectric stack is where the “magic” happens. There are several hundred layers of piezoelectric material stacked together and, when an electrical charge is applied through the electrode, the material momentarily changes (atoms are mutually displaced) producing a change in the length of the stack by 0.04mm 26 SSGM August 2009
(0.0015″). This change in size extends the pushing pin to apply force to the upper piston of the hydraulic coupler. The hydraulic coupler increases the stroke of the piezoelectric actuator by using two pistons of different diameter separated by a chamber of fuel. The lower piston has a smaller diameter and
formed by electrical discharge machining. The inline design of the injector allows for minimal fuel return flow which decreases the energy and delivery rate required from the high pressure fuel pump. Also, due to the precise repeatable motion of the piezo-material, the needle position can be measured since its
is moved hydraulically by the fuel—allowing it to travel further. The fuel helps to compensate for length differences of the individual parts due to thermal expansion rates. A spring bushing is used to apply a preload to the piezoelectric actuator so tensile forces do not build up. Piezo-material can produce a high pushing force but cannot withstand large pulling forces The control valve directs and controls fuel flow which hydraulically opens and closes the injector nozzle. When injection is required, the control valve blocks a bypass passage, which creates an internal pressure difference within the injector nozzle body allowing the high pressure fuel to raise the needle and fuel to be injected. Injection quantity and duration are determined by the time the ECM keeps the actuator energized. The injector nozzle generates a fine mist of atomized fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The nozzle tip will have a number of spray holes (varies depending on manufacturer and application) with a diameter of approximately 0.131mm (0.005). These are
position in time correlates directly to fuel flow rate. This then also allows the possibility of eliminating other control sensors used by the managing ECU. Like many electro-magnetic injectors, these injectors are coded at the time of production; recording the variations which occur in the manufacturing process and in the piezoelectric actuator travel from its target value. This information must be programmed into the controlling module so it can make the appropriate adjustments in activation time to ensure the best performance. As tighter fuel consumption and emission restrictions are placed upon the industry, expect to see more of this style of injector being used in both gas and diesel engines. While there is a cost penalty for manufacturing them it is almost completely balanced out currently by the improved fuel mileage and performance. Forward, Backward and Underneath Phoenix Systems’ Maxi-Ject Pro gives professionals By: Jim Anderton, Technical Editor more hydraulic bleeding options
B
rake and clutch bleeding used to be one of those jobs, like chassis lubrication and tire busting, that shops left to the apprentice. What could be simpler? ABS and European hydroboost braking systems, however, have made many jobs difficult to nearly impossible to complete with a high, hard pedal. Phoenix System’s Maxi-Ject Pro is a professional-level tool designed to address hard-tobleed hydraulics. SSGM tested it on a difficult Ford clutch application where the master cylinder’s upturned body trapped air in a dead-end pocket.
3
1
3: The first step is to fill the provided fluid bottle with quality brake fluid. This Castrol fluid is full synthetic and can be used with both DOT 3 and DOT 4 systems.
4
1: The Maxi-Ject Pro comes in a blow moulded case that holds the unit and all accessories.
2 4: Loaded for bear…or brakes. The Maxi-Ject Pro draws fluid from the rear and pushes it out the front. The system can be configured for conventional vacuum bleeding, pressure bleeding through the fluid reservoir, and what Phoenix calls “Reverse Fluid Injection,” basically pressure bleeding from the slave forward to the master cylinder. This is the preferred technique for tough ones like this Ford clutch unit. The tool can also be set up for bench bleeding master cylinders. 2: This remote reservoir hides a canted master cylinder that traps air.....making bleeding difficult. 28 SSGM August 2009
www.ssgm.com
10
5
5: The hypodermic-like graduated barrel is especially useful for reverse injection. By measuring the amount of fluid drained from the system, it’s possible to inject just the right amount from beneath the vehicle without overfilling the master cylinder reservoir.
10: This adjustment at the rear of the pistol grip acts as a stroke limiter, allowing a rapid pulse injection method that flushes calipers much better than straight bleeding.
11
6: The Maxi-Ject Pro in action. Injecting fresh fluid back through the clutch slave cylinder from underneath. Do this with the reservoir cap off.
6
7: Another useful feature is the magnetic leash that holds the fill bottle up and out of the way. Spilling brake fluid is always risky around painted surfaces.
11: Why you buy professional tools. This spring tensioner allows the user to control the squeeze grip force; for big or multiple jobs this saves your hands and prevents cramping.
12
7 8
8: But what about aluminum hoods? This setup is one answer. If you’re asking, it’s a Proto 13/16-inch combination wrench.
9
9: If it’s necessary to break into the system at wheel cylinders or upstream, numerous adapters are included in the kit. www.ssgm.com
12: What’s inside, plus the other reason you buy professional tools....the MaxiJect Pro is re-buildable from kits that renew the wear items like seals.
So how did Phoenix Systems’ Maxi-Ject Pro work? First shot, using “reverse fluid injection” from underneath. The beauty of this backwards bleeding is that there’s nowhere for air bubbles to hide; they migrate upwards and out of the fluid reservoir. Complaints? I found the instruction booklet complicated and largely unnecessary, as the unit goes together intuitively. I’d also grab an Altoids or Sucrets tin to keep the numerous adapters together. Would I have a MaxiJect Pro in my box? Absolutely. This is a heavy duty tool with a comprehensive accessory set that bleeds and flushes quickly, an absolute must in today’s busy shop environment. The Maxi-Ject Pro is available through LuK distributors.

You Work With Idiots I
f there’s one fundamental truth that surfaces after thirty years in the Canadian workforce it’s this: Everybody works with idiots. The fact that everybody works with idiots makes idiotspotting ridiculously easy...and idiot removal extremely difficult. By working with my share over the years and after careful study of the Idiot Problem, I’ve developed the following classification system to let you better understand the exact type of idiots you work with.
The Cliff Claven Idiot
Like the character in “Cheers,” this guy knows everything about everything, all the time. This would be fine if any of that extensive knowledge was useful, but instead it’s an endless spew of trivia about anything except the problem you have right now. If you can’t trace that intermittent short or fix your short game, look elsewhere. If you need to know who played the Professor on Gilligan’s Island, he’s your guy.
The Royalty Idiot
By Jim Anderton, Technical Editor
He did have an incredible talent for seducing women, making his Monday morning performance, in the bays at least, less than outstanding.
This guy is in many ways the opposite of the Cliff Claven idiot....he knows something, but won’t tell anybody. He will, however, let everyone in the shop know that he knows the answer, then behave like the shop Ayatollah to prove his point. These idiots will never give you a straight answer to your question. They’ll lead you along by making you tease out every word of the solution before saying, “Yeah, it’s the MAP sensor. Had one just like it last week.”
The Angry Idiot
This one is priceless, because he can ruin your day and poison the shop environment before the first coffee break. You can spot him by the constant look of barely controlled rage and the stream of abuse aimed at the industry, the shop, the government, management and the Chrysler on the hoist. Swearing without the good nature is a clue and in extreme cases he’ll throw tools or slam drawers. Don’t confuse him with the Conspiracy Theory Idiot. He’s mad, but the reasons are a little closer to the edge....look for the use of the term “The System.”
The Absent-Minded Idiot
The Absent -Minded Idiot is less immediately annoying than the other types, but ultimately he’s more frustrating. His technique is to keep his head so far up that he forgets everything from his bag lunch to the oil pan drain plug. A side effect of this behaviour is the ability to bang his head or smash his fingers with a regularity that makes keeping the first aid kit stocked a daily checklist item. These guys are often quite smart...it’s just that they’re thinking about whether the Canucks made a mistake with Sundin instead of the Sanden A/C compressor they drop on their toes.
The True Idiot
These are extremely rare. True Idiots genuinely can’t do anything right; but truth be told, I’ve never seen one. The reason they’re rare is that they usually have a little of the Dustin Hoffman character in the movie Rain Man; there’s something at which they’re brilliant. Too bad it has nothing to do with fixing cars and trucks. I once worked with a guy who couldn’t tighten a bolt without breaking it or stripping threads. We called him “Stone Hands,” but he did have an incredible talent for seducing women, making his Monday morning performance, in the bays at least, less than outstanding. He couldn’t fix anything, but on the other hand he might have been the smartest guy in the shop. By now, you know who fits where in your shop...and if you’re really good, you know where you fit in the above classification. I’m also not leaving out women here…they have the same ability to be idiots, but they’re nicer to be around. I’m a little of several types, except the part about seducing women....hey, you can’t be good at everything.
