Ofto the stolen lamb
Navarinou Square, the erstwhile student neighbourhood with the Galerius Palace, in the recent years is filled with bars, cafes, eateries, places which over time became the “must” of going out in the city. A bustling square full of movement, chatter and scents that charm the sense of smell and pleasantly surprise the visitor. At this central, full of gastronomic challenges, point of the region, is located a new destination for the foodies of lamb: “Ofto” The stolen lamb restaurant! First to say that the etymology of ofto is summarized as follows: <opto <Ancient Greek opto <epso (boil) and means long hours roasted, welldone meat. So the restaurant’s name speaks for itself: “The garden of gastronomic Eden” for the roast lamb lovers. Of course, one could argue that you can find many spits in the city. Right. Except that, in “Ofto” the technique is different. The lamb is not done on the spit, the lamb is ofto (..winking at the ones who know). Many would wonder what “ofto” lamb means. It is the lamb cooked for hours in a traditional stone oven. And this is the feature and yet striking element that makes the “Ofto” stand out. The preparation process starts at dawn. Stone ovens are lit and only when the fire temperature reaches 300 degrees, they open up to welcome the lamb. The secret is that this “furnace” makes a tender crispy outer skin while keeping the juices inside the meat. The temperature slowly drops while the lamb braises for hours, until it becomes a tasteful delight. For the public, “Ofto” opens at 13.00 and the Chef “starts the game” with the dishes: Ofto lamb, of course, and daily delicious traditional moussaka, meatballs made with oriental secrets, appetizing giaourtlou, Smyrna meatballs and a number of dishes that create culinary hallucinations and a gustatory delirium. Our kitchen is mostly Greek , Mediterranean, with a small influence from near East. Different types of beans, fresh salads, fresh fishes from the Aegean sea, fresh meat, cheeses and local wines... It was late of 1991, since our dream started to come true, we wanted to open a small restaurant, with excellent plates, tasty food, delicious wine and pure tsipouro. Lot s of people visited our restaurant, we started to be famous. Everyone were talking about our tasty food and our live musicians. Today , we live other season, people change, also our service. We hope to continue doing the same thing for many years. Our aim is to ensure that you experience a truly pleasant, idyllic vacation. Our hotel allocates 16 rooms, 4 suites and 1 apartment. The rooms host 2 to 3 persons and the apartment up to 7 persons.
