ello Maddox! Tell me a little about you. Where are you from? What do you do in Second Life? I live in Melbourne, Australia. In Second Life, my partner Kirk and I own KMADD Enterprise which specializes in appearance based products and fashion/style services. In addition I love to build for MAD Agency shows and KMADD Events, get involved in Second Life charity work, and help new brands grow and develop their business. I know that you are running several businesses under KMADD Enterprise. Could you explain to us which are they and what do they offer (MADesigns, etc.)? KMADD Enterprise or simply KMADD, is the name for a conglomerate of several product and service based businesses. MADesigns, which is our product based brand, offers mostly avatar based products like shapes, hair, eyes and poses. Other service based aspects of KMADD Enterprise are MAD Agency, MAD Image and MAD Studio Photography. MAD Agency is a boutique model management company that provides top models & style services to photographers, advertisers, designers and production compa-

BY KATHRIN PEARL Hello Kathrin and thank you for taking the time to answer this interview. We are curious to know at GLANCE Magazine, when and how you got into fashion design? I got in fashion design by accident to be honest. I first worked as a model and since then I can’t stop designing! My SL husband, Duke McDonnagh, always believed in me and supported me in so many ways so I stayed in the world of fashion and created *KPD*-Fashion for the Ladies and it is a wonderful experience so far. Where do you find inspiration for your new creations? In anything and everything! I do love colors in every variations and combi-

nations... I mean really, I enjoy fresh, eye-catching colors in every style. If you had to pick a favorite among your past creations, which one would you choose and why? I would choose “La Musica” and “Coloured and Nice”, those are my two favorite designs. “La Musica” is a ladylike, elegant, beautiful, exclusive creation while “Coloured and Nice” is colorful, cheeky, sexy, fresh, and stylish... I could keep going on and on! How would you define the style of the brand *KPD*? Anything and everything is possible in the world of Fashion in SL and therefore *KPD* stands for exclusive

The Finale

D L E I F T I H ANNAH WNCE 2007

SI BY DESIGN

Hello Annah! Please choose 5 words that best describe your latest creations.

My latest creations are very simple and casual, cute (as in the cutest I’ve ever done), easy to wear and versatile.

The theme of your fashion showcase was Valentine’s. Would you describe yourself as a romantic artist? What are your influences when it comes to fashion design?

I have my moments, haha! My collection is for people who love themselves and the main goal is to love what they are wearing. So it is more a question of self love than romanticism. But there are some days when I feel more romantic, and in those days I turn into my other hobbie - the poses. I create poseballs full of love!

What are the biggest challenges you have found while designing in SL?

The SL fashion industry is always evolving, way too fast I think. So to keep up with all the news it is the worst part, because RL doesn’t always let us stay in SL enough time to learn what we need to. Also, there are amazing creators appearing in the SL fashion industry and it is hard to reach the top with everyone out there.

What were the three most important events in your SL so far?

Well, for .:StoRin:., one of the biggest events is approaching, the Pose Fair! I love to participate in the Pose Fair, as a creator and as a customer. Also, the Fashion For Life, former Relay for Life, probably the biggest event every year in SL and where .:StoRin:. has participated actively, though this year I couldn’t do it due to lack

64

STORIN of time in real life! As for weekly events, the Fifty Linden Friday is probably the biggest event, the most well known and the one that everyone waits for - in this one I wish .:StoRin:. could participate.

Can you share your upcoming projects with our magazine readers?

As I said before, I’ll be participating in the Pose Fair 2011 with new sets of poses. As for fashion, I am really into it again, as I was a few months way from it, but now I am getting back and creating every chance I get, so new clothes are coming soon. I’ll be participating in The little big shop event, in a cooperative work with someone I trully admire and I’ll be also in the Culture Shock Event in the next months. So a lot of work...

What would you like to say to those who are discovering you through this interview?

You are so late, haha! No, I’m kidding! I would like you to come visit my store, which is being renovated. I am sure everyone will like it! Also, I put a lot of love and personal taste in my creations, so drop by to check everything! I cannot be a creator that releases every week because I take a lot of time trying to find the best way of creating what I imagine. Go check for yourselves! Seriously! Thank you very much for reading.

MODEL TALK

84

VERONICA KRASNER PHOTOS CREDITS: VALERIA ENDRIZZI

Hello Veronica and congratulations! You are our March 2011 model of the month. How do you feel about this title? I feel very surprised and honored to be showcased as the Model of the Month. I’ve been working for GLANCE for nearly two years now and I have been very honored to be a member of it’s staff, so this special mention makes me very proud and thankful to all the GLANCE familiy for this recognition. How did you get into the fashion industry? I joined Second Life® on January 6th, 2007 and after spending some months getting used to the basic skills in-world, I started looking at the classifieds searching to join any modeling agency looking for models. At this point I will always be thankful to Sunshine Kit, Calamity Hathaway and Miguel Rotunno, the first people to trust me and gave me my first modeling assignments and a spot in runway shows. I spent a year modeling part-time and learning for myself and with the help of the agency’s trainers. By that time the first modeling schools or academies started to flourish in Second Life, I decided it was time to acquire a formal training and to evolve in the profession. I had a face and shape makeover, after that and some training, slowly other agencies hired me and I started officially modeling as my main profession in Second Life. What do you like about this industry? I like the thrill of showcasing SL designer’s

creations. I like the feeling when I am styling outfits for a show at home and picking the best possible accessories to showcase them with. I like the excitement and nerves backstage before my first walk out at a show and I like working with my fellow models as a team, pulling all together in order to achieve a succesful show. I enjoy helping newcomer models! I think it’s a way to give back what I was given when I started in the industry. At the moment I am not a trainer for any agency since I have so much going on, I am not home roughly 10 hours a day due to my real life work, but I help them when I can if they ask me for advice and love doing it. I am totally in love and amazed at the creativity among the SL fashion industry; from designers to agency CEOs, management and to fellow models abilities and styling. I hopefully plan to continue doing this job for a long time to come. Many people think that virtual modeling is easy task. What would you like people to understand about this job? I heard many times the statement made that anyone could be a model and walk a runway but I think it’s a bit more complicated than that. Being a model that works efficiently and leaves designers and agencies satisfied with your walk and performance takes a number of things. First of all, some formal training to acquire the modeling theory and master the basic skills and runway techniques. Secondly, it requires lots of practice on your own to

i m r e t e d d n ” a y r e t v s i u r d d n i e s th i h s t s e e s c s a r o b p m o t e e o t v . a . . h d e u ce c “Yo u s o t n o i nat become as smooth and accurate as possible, and that consumes time and money. It also takes quite a bit of time to style properly and to find the necessary uniqueness required to attain a certain look that sets you apart from others. I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but certainly you have to possess the drive and determination to succeed if you really want to embrace this industry. Most of all, I think that you have to do it for your passion for fashion and not for the money.... remember... in the end... you will always spend way more than what you will earn. I know that you are among the veteran top models and that back in your days one could hardly find a modeling school. Where did you get trained? And what is your position regarding today’s modeling academies? My first notion of “trainings” were informal but useful ones that I’ve attended in my first ever agencies that I got in, practicing some techniques, runway choreographies, looping, turning, etc. At that time the modeling academies, as you well may have noticed, were not as common as

they are in SL nowadays... When the first modeling schools started to flourish, I decided that it was time to acquire some formal training in order to keep evolving and getting better. I enrolled to InStyle (UVogue) Modeling School in September, 2008, then I attended the Avenue Models Academy course in November, 2008 and lastly a course at GLANCE Model Academy in February, 2009. All of them were amazing and focused on different aspects of the modeling career. Some focused more on styling, some more on runway and some more on general stuff and theory. Each one of them were an enriching experience for me to help me develop as a better model. Today with many academies flourishing and adding to the industry, I would say to any prospective model wanting to get good training: get informed! Find out if the school teaches and covers what you want to learn, the availability and time needed to attend all the necessary courses to graduate and if it is group or one-onone classes. One of the questions to ask before deciding to enroll would be: is it a brand new academy or an established

“One of my great some est sa of the tisfac bigge tions st and is to w most ork... respe for cted n ames ” one? And to check into their reputation. A prospective student has to feel that their choice is the right one and whether the money invested in doing the course is worth it for them. Looking back at your career, could you tell us more about your achievements as a model? I feel that one of my biggest accomplishments and one of my greatest satisfactions is to work nowadays for some of the biggest and most respected names in the industry. Joining each one of them was a big step in my professional career and I feel very honored to be counted as an active member with each of them. I generally wasn’t lucky enough on winning contests or pageants, but lately I have managed to place 1st Runner up or official finalist in several contests for stores or agencies. I feel that my biggest achievements so far were firstly, to get selected as an Official Finalist Candidate for Miss Virtual World 2011, in which I represented the country of Uruguay and secondly, to grace the cover of a magazine for the first time last year.

Besides that, I also feel it is an achievement each time I get congratulated after a good performance at a show by agencies management, designers or fellow models attending to the event. It’s always a good feeling to have the satisfaction of a job well done! It seems there is a lot of different conceptions when it comes to beauty. How do you define it? I think I’ll say something that was said many times before but it’s true… With L$ everyone can be stunning and wear the best skins and clothes. I also think that there is a part of your avatar that reflects who you are behind your computer, and your personality should shine through. I think that it is what sets everyone apart from one another. When you let that part of yourself shine through the avatar, your inner real life beauty reflects in your SL avatar, adding an extra beauty that can be perceived alongside your pixelated representation. Beauty is also being kind to others and showing how much passion you put in every task, project or event.

Do you have professional tips to share with aspiring models? I think that to be a succesful model there are many elements joining all together: a formal education to learn the modeling techniques and styling tips, as we evoked earlier then practice on your own as much as you can. Make it a point to go to laggy sims with packed clubs and try to walk there in the best way you can, that will help you to get used to lag, which almost always is the case at the majority of the SL modeling shows. Be reliable, punctual and have a good attitude. Be open to the unexpected or last minute changes, and mostly don’t give

Lastly, I am not a “tech girl” but you should consider having a good PC, with a powerful processor and graphics card, and enough RAM memory to run heavy shows with lag as smooth as possible. You have been promoted to Supermodel within GLANCE International Agency a few months ago. What is your feeling regarding this nomination? I feel very honored and thankful to GLANCE International Agency for this nomination. I do believe all the models are equally talented and dedicated to their jobs. Since fashion is our passion and life style here in Second Life, I don’t feel I am in any way

“Having a high self-esteem and being selfconfident will help you in this industry” up. You will find rejection sooner or later at any point of your career, it is ok to feel sad or even angry (I felt that way too), but get over it, pick up your pieces and be ready for the next chance to try again! There is also a certain luck factor that you can experience too, some have it soon as they start their career, some have it later. I call it the magic of “being at the right place at the right moment”. It happened many times to me, for castings mostly. Also having a high self-esteem and being self-confident will help you in this industry. Remember: always remain humble enough to accept suggestions, corrections and be open to keep evolving all the time. Be unique, don’t copy other models looks, facial features or stylings, just be yourself and a recognizable face that is all yours!

better than anyone by wearing a “supermodel” tag. I do feel happy and proud of it, basically because I take it as a recognition of my work and love for this wonderful industry. What can GLANCE Magazine wish you for the future? Well, I plan to continue working in this industry, as I said before I love it and I feel honored of every single show I get casted to be in. I would love to do some more print work such as vendors or magazine spreads, I didn’t have much chance of doing that type of work so far and I find it as charming as walking a catwalk. I would also love to keep challenging my luck and styling skills by entering contests and why not... Maybe I will achieve being the face of any well respected SL brand.
