Hello Ngozi and congratulations on winning Miss Essence of Ebony 2012 beauty contest! You are our Model of the Month for April 2012. How do you feel about this title?

I’m honored and grateful for the support from everyone. I’ve never been a title holder before so all of this is still new to me. The feeling is great! I still feel like the same person which is good. It was definitely a long road up to this point, as well as a learning experience.

How did you get into the fashion industry?

I first discovered SL modeling browsing modeling agency websites. I searched around the grid for fashion groups which

later led me to my first casting... which was a train wreck. However, after that I was determined to learn more.

What do you like about this industry?

I love the amount of creativity expressed in the industry. Everyone views fashion in a different light, depending on which fashion genre you’re into. It’s constantly reinventing itself, moving forward just like in RL. I admire the hard work and dedication that goes into this field which I feel has a bit of a positive influence to the rest of the grid.

Many people think that virtual modeling is easy task. What would you like people to under-

stand about this job?

I think some people assume SL Modeling is a skill-less profession because they only see the final production, the ads and fashion shows. If they could only see a model’s screen during a show, they would notice that it is usually cluttered with windows and HUDs! Without evoking the rehearsals and the various tasks, including rounding up the models who come from all over the globe!

I know that you are among the upcoming models and that you discovered modeling when many modeling schools were open.

Where did you get trained? And

what is your position regarding today’s modeling academies?

I graduated from MA Modeling Academy back in 2010. I enjoyed my time there and they definitely paved the way for me to find work. I recently became one of the Instructors for Oglam Academy in which I’m excited about.

Looking back at your career, could you tell us more about your achievements as a model?

Being a model has allowed me to improve as a stylist, a photographer, a pose maker, and now a fashion designer which was an ultimate goal of mine.

It seems that there is a lot of different conceptions when it comes to beauty. How do you define it?

In SL modeling, beauty can be a vague term. I admire models who strive to create a look that isn’t always considered “beautiful”. In the virtual world of Second Life™ it can sometimes be difficult to be unique. I admire beauty in diversity of ethnicity, as well as facial features.

Do you have professional tips to share with aspiring models?

Have fun! This should be an enjoyable and wonderful way to express your creativity. If you plan to go to any modeling academy, learn about the agency you

wish to apply to. From attending shows, reading magazines, and blog posts try to soak up as much information as possible. Most of all try to stay humble and willing to learn new information.

You won with your award a paid tuition worth 8,000L$ to join GLANCE Model Academy. What is your feeling regarding this prize?

I’m ecstatic and grateful to be given the opportunity to refresh what I’ve learned as well as learn new information. There’s always room for improvement.

What can GLANCE Magazine wish you for the future?

I wish to continue to improve my skills, expand my business and most of all enjoy my second life!

All of this is definitely a working progress that I’ll continue to take on day by day.

Hello Latrelly! It is a pleasure to meet you as our Fashion Pro’ of the month.

For our readers who may be unfamiliar with your beauty pageant, could you please tell us what Miss Essence of Ebony is about?

The Essence of Ebony Contest was designed to recognize inspiring women of color throughout history and the modern woman of today.

The Pageant seeks to give young, talented Ebony women a platform to impact their SL communities while gaining grid-wide exposure. It is an opportunity for these newer Ebony models to obtain a sense of well-being and self-confidence by competing for a prestigious title that will continue to enhance their second lives.

The mission of Miss Essence of Ebony Contest is to identify, develop, and promote awareness of Ebony Models within Second Life™.

This mission is served through intensive contestant development and by working with our contestant/models on a continuous basis by providing scholarships and ongoing training.

This pageant was developed to celebrate the many shapes, sizes, colors, and textures of women of Ebony descent and to provide a forum for those women to showcase their talents.

Why and when did you join Second Life™? And what makes you stay?

I joined Second Life™ on December the 22nd of 2009, I came to Second Life™ with my SL husband who has been an amazing support for me. The reason why I have stayed so long is due to the continued support from friends and family I have had to pleasure of coming in contact with.

What was your inspiration to start this beauty pageant and how did you get started?

My inspiration started when I noticed the lack of beauty contests geared

towards women of Ebony descent. I was also inspired by Patty Cortes when I discovered that she in the past had a contest that was geared towards the success of Ebony women in the Second Life™ community.

I spoke with Patty about her contest and asked for her blessing and advice to start one of my own with the same concept she had.

There has been a first edition of the beauty pageant in 2010 where Imani Enzo was crowned and this year, it is the turn of Ngozi Faith, who is gracing our cover. How did you find the contest this year? Was it more challenging?

I did find the contest to be more challenging this year in terms of lack of Ebony contestants applying.

During the event, we saw models representing different countries across Africa. Why did you make this choice? How did it impact on your pageant compared to 2010 where this feature didn’t exist?

The assigned countries were one of the highlights of the contest for me, to have each contestant to represent a country, to research that country and learn its history was an education process for our contestants. I will continue this tradition for as long as Essence of Ebony will exist.

During the rest of the year, do you work on projects other than Miss Essence of Ebony?

I enjoy taking photos in Second Life™, so I plan on perfecting my skills in photography and in Photoshop while I continue to promote Essence Of Ebony for next year.

What do you think are the pros and cons of coordinating a virtual beauty pageant?

The pro of this contest has to be seeing the joy each contestant gets out of being in a fair contest. The con is that everyone will never be happy; some people will always find fault in what you do.

Lastly, what can we expect for Miss Essence of Ebony 2013?

Miss Essence of Ebony continues to gain grid-wide exposure, success and sponsorship. I am very proud of this. My goal is to continue to stay faithful to my worthy sponsors, add new ones, promote the contest to the fullest, continue to be fair and most of all have FUN!

The Journey...

The quest to find Miss Essence of Ebony 2012 started with 110 applicants among which the top 20 was selected.

All these beautiful and talented women presented week after week their unique sense of style to the jury composed of fashion professionals Patty Cortes, Roe Woodford, Vikeejeah Xevion, Ava Jhamin, Miss Essence of Ebony 2011 Imani Enzo, Miss Essence of Ebony Founder & CEO Latrelly Flux and Miss Essence of Ebony COO Kalyabreeaa Capelo.

On February 18th, the top 11 contestants presented their styling skills for the last time in the 2012 Competition. At the end of the event, only one was crowned: congratulations to Miss Essence of Ebony 2012, Ngozi Faith! We extend our congratulations as well to the 1st Runner Up Slowly Bury and the 2nd Runner Up Shelby Matfield.

Let’s go back on a style journey where fashion statements were made and fashion rules were reinvented.

The Winner recieved the title of Miss Essence of Ebony 2012, L$50.000 and became the Cover Girl of GLANCE Magazine. She also received a paid tuition at GLANCE Model Academy (worth 8,000L$) and a one of a kind gown designed by GIZZA, a custom made gown from PurpleMoon and a beautiful crown made by FINESMITH designs.

Hello Brutus! Can you tell us more about you and your career as an SL fashion designer?

I got started with making tattoos for fun in 2007 and then later I started a little brand with a friend in the beginning of 2008 and branched out into clothing, poses, etc. After we shut down that brand I decided I wanted to open a store on my own and named it “Pididdle” after a game my friends and I used to play in high school. I taught myself Photoshop and started out small with basic clothing and accessories. It’s insane when I think my brand will turn 4 this year! I have kept creating because I get a huge fulfillment out of conquering things I said I could never do, like sculpting and baking for example. I am very proud of what I have done so far and will continue to learn and create as long as I can.

Four years, that’s a long time! Where do you find inspiration for your new creations? Do you find it to be a difficult aspect of the creation process?

Inspiration is always tough for me

because I don’t want to be known as a designer that copies straight from real life ideas. I often just think of what I’d love to have for my avatar that I can’t find anywhere else.

Of course sometimes my designs favor real life trends because I know people want to wear in Second Life™ what they love wearing in real life, but I still try to do a twist on such designs to make them more “me”.

How often do you release new items? Do you have special creations for those who are part of your in-world or subscribers groups?

I try to release as often as I can. Juggling a real life job and other real life responsibilities is tough on my Second Life™ time. Right now I would say I have about 3 new things a month but I hope to increase that soon. I have a subscribers group that just sends out news – it doesn’t have gifts or special items. I have a VIP group though, that takes up group space and has a fee. The only reason I have a fee is so people don’t join just to get the items I give away

in the group notices and then leave.

I don’t just throw items that I like less into the group notices, I make them special and often times group members are the only ones who will own them in Second Life™.

So you are giving away exclusive items only available to your VIP group members, that’s very generous. What are the next projects for Pididdle?

Well, I am opening a new build soon and with that, I will have a whole new lip color line as well as new clothing and accessories. Right now I am more focused on accessories because I am trying to learn my way around 3d programs better. I hope to learn mesh soon because the clothing items I have in mind and really want to make would work best with mesh. Mesh is a road block for me at the moment but I really want to learn.

Last question - how do you envision Pididdle in the future?

I envision it to be bigger, with a sub-

larger invenFASHIONstantially DESIGNER tory than it has now (I have a bad habit of retiring things when they start to embarrass me!) I’m not sure about style or even direction. To be honest the brand changes as I change. I’ve never been good at sticking to one vision. I’m terrified of change in real life but I love it here. Keeps everything refreshed and ideas flowing.
