SWPL 1 Petershill Park KO: 1pm

GRANT'S THOUGHTS GRANT SCOTT

"We're expecting a tough match against Motherwell. With the new management and players having had more time together now I expect a structured opponent prepared to play hard. We have to make sure we do the same to overcome Motherwell in a tricky start to our league season. The players are in good shape and we're looking for a strong performance to begin the league."

CITY NEWS

SERVETTE SECOND LEG TICKETS FOR FREE Tickets for Glasgow City’s second leg of our UEFA Women’s Champions League

Second Round tie against Swiss champions Servette FCCF will be made free for all. The first leg in Geneva saw a stunning strike from Clare Shine secure a 1-1 draw after Servette had taken the lead early in the second half leaving the match very finely balanced ahead of the return leg on Wednesday. The winner of the tie will progress to the Group Stage. Tickets still need to be ordered via the club shop on the Glasgow City website and all tickets that have been bought will be refunded. Chief Executive Officer Laura Montgomery commented: “Wednesday is such a hugely important game for us and for Scotland as we look to try and reach the Champions League Group stages and be amongst Europe’s most elite sides. We know the early kick off is unusual, and we want to do everything we can to get a strong crowd behind the team. Servette had an excellent crowd backing their side in Geneva and we know the difference it can make. Hopefully our first ever free entry and for a top European match will bring some new fans along to the game.” The match takes place on Wednesday 8th September at Broadwood Stadium with a 3.10pm kick off.

LAST TIME OUT

SHINE SUPER STRIKE SECURES CITY DRAW A superb strike from Clare Shine secured a 1-1 draw for Glasgow City in tonight’s UEFA Women’s Champions League first-leg tie against Servette. A Jade Boho header had given the home side the lead on 50 minutes, but Shine’s exquisite equaliser just 15 minutes later meant City took a draw back to Scotland ahead of next week’s second-leg. City made two changes from their previous Champions League outing, with

Claire Walsh replacing Jenna Clark and Agata Filipa coming in for Megan Foley. A bright start from the home side almost saw Paula Serrano give the Swiss side the lead in the opening 90 seconds, but her attempt sailed over Lee Alexander’s bar from close range. The best chance of a quiet first half fell to Mónica Mendes who should have broke the deadlock for Servette when she dragged a shot inches wide after a free kick wasn’t cleared on the half hour mark. The hosts would open the scoring shortly after the break though, when Boho’s clever header from an angled free kick would loop beyond Alexander and into the net. Servette’s goal would shake City into life, however, and they almost immediately responded when Janine Van Wyk’s spectacular drive was excellently tipped over the bar by Inês Pereira. City would grab their leveller only minutes later when Walsh’s long ball was latched onto superbly by Shine, who would rifle an excellent volley beyond Pereira and into the Swiss side’s net.

MATCHDAY PREVIEW

All you need to know....

It's one of the biggest days in the season as the new 2021-22 Scottish Women's Premier League gets underway this afternoon as we welcome Motherwell to Petershill Park. City return to their home in Glasgow after a year playing at Broadwood Stadium with Motherwell the first visitors in the league. The Well coincidentally were the last time City played in the SWPL at Petershill Park. Motherwell finished third in their SWPL Cup group after defeats to Rangers and Aberdeen meaning they failed to reach the Quarter Finals. The last time the sides met, goals from Leanne Ross, Mairead Fulton, Aoife Colvill and Janine Van Wyk secured all three points for City.
