THE NEW UWCL FORMAT
2021-22 SEES A NEW FORMAT FOR THE UWCL
The UEFA Women's Champions League has undergone changes ahead of the 202122 season. This year sees an introduction of a new 16 team Group Stage along with more teams entering the competition from the top 16 nations. The first of the new changes sees a split in qualifying between a Champions Path and a League Path. The qualifying stage groups have also been replaced by a new Round 1. This round sees teams split into groups of four with two semi-finals taking place before a final to determine the team to progress into Round 2. This year's edition has 11 Champions Path groups and 4 League Path routes. Round 2 has a similar look to the old Round of 32 with ties being played over two legs with each side having home advantage for one of them. The Champions and League paths continue with nine teams entering at this stage, three in the Champions Path and six in the League Path to join the sides that progressed from Round 1. Winners of the two legged ties progress to the brand new Group Stage which will feature 16 teams. Pot 1 has already been determined with holders FC Barcelona (ESP), Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Chelsea FC (ENG) and FC Bayern Munich (GER). The other three pots will be filled by teams progressing from Round 2 and seedings determined by the club's UEFA coefficients. The Group Stage will see everyone play each of their opponents in their group home and away in October, November and December with the top two in each group progressing to the Quarter Finals before the Semi Finals and the eventual Final on the 22nd of May at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.
