THE FIRST LEG
SHINE SUPER STRIKE LEAVES TIE ALL SQUARE A superb strike from Clare Shine secured a 1-1 draw for Glasgow City in tonight’s UEFA Women’s Champions League first-leg tie against Servette. A Jade Boho header had given the home side the lead on 50 minutes, but Shine’s exquisite equaliser just 15 minutes later meant City took a draw back to Scotland ahead of next week’s second-leg. City made two changes from their previous Champions League outing, with Claire Walsh replacing Jenna Clark and Agata Filipa coming in for Megan Foley. A bright start from the home side almost saw Paula Serrano give the Swiss side the lead in the opening 90 seconds, but her attempt sailed over Lee Alexander’s bar from close range. The best chance of a quiet first half fell to Mónica Mendes who should have broke the deadlock for Servette when she dragged a shot inches wide after a free kick wasn’t cleared on the half hour mark. The hosts would open the scoring shortly after the break though, when Boho’s clever header from an angled free kick would loop beyond Alexander and into the net. Servette’s goal would shake City into life, however, and they almost immediately responded when Janine Van Wyk’s spectacular drive was excellently tipped over the bar by Inês Pereira. City would grab their leveller only minutes later when Walsh’s long ball was latched onto superbly by Shine, who would rifle an excellent volley beyond Pereira and into the Swiss side’s net.
