As an educational charity working in partnership with a number of public, corporate and not-forprofit entities, the Glasgow Science Centre is uniquely placed to deliver key messages to a large number of individuals of all ages and walks of life throughout Scotland and beyond. This it does through well-researched, interactive exhibitions and associated programmes. The figures for our in-house visitors and outreach participants are simply outstanding. We are proud to have become a trusted and reliable resource for teachers and pupils who can benefit from our learning sessions which are aligned to the Curriculum for Excellence. Our excellent relationship with the academic and corporate worlds brings a constant stream of professionals to our ‘Meet the Expert’ programme, whilst our Planetarium continues to deliver ‘out of this world’ experiences! GSC plays a significant part in developing the next generation of scientists and engineers. In partnership with Skills Development Scotland we created a permanent hub, ‘My World of Work’, which offers in-depth insights into careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. GSC is also home to CoderDojo, a coding club for young people and to OPAL, which connects children and adults to the natural environment. Glasgow City of Science, a partnership organisation which promotes STEAMMS in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, is also based at GSC.
ABOUT GSC
AT G L A S G O W S C I E N C E C E N T R E In Winter 2015 GSC will launch a brand-new interactive exhibition named ‘Powering the Future’. Occupying over 500sqm of Glasgow Science Centre’s space, and with a life-span of at least six years, this exhibition will tell the stories behind energy extraction, conversion, distribution and use. It will also convey how resources are currently used to power our modern lives and the challenges we face in order to secure reliable supplies, control emissions and ensure affordability. Powering the Future will contribute to educating the general public on the key issues surrounding energy use, and the role that each of us has in creating a sustainable society. Importantly, it will also enthuse young people about the energy industry and will help them to picture a future for themselves in it. GSC is already working on the development of programmes and initiatives to support, complement and enrich Powering the Future. Plans to develop an ‘On Tour’ version of the exhibition are afoot, allowing thousands of people throughout Scotland, and possibly further afield, to have a better and unbiased understanding of the importance and relevance of a balanced ‘energy mix’. Plans to offer tailored educational programmes, linked to the Curriculum for Excellence, both in-house and via our outreach teams, are also taking shape.
