Nature The Kingdom of Crystal is also the kingdom of water, with magical lakes and winding rivers. Do you have the patience to wait for a bite? Then you’re in the right place!
Cycle from one glassworks to another – it’s the perfect way to experience both culture and nature in the Kingdom of Crystal. Travel through forest and across meadows at your own speed.
Ödevata Fishing Camp Out in the wilderness where forest meets lake you can find Ödevata Fishing Camp and Activity Centre. Outdoor experiences and adventures are organised all year round for both families and keen angling enthusiasts. The lakes are perfect for taking a boat trip or canoeing. Here you can swim, sunbathe and relax at the water’s edge or in the sauna and wood-fired hot tub.
By bicycle in Målerås Målerås Vandrarhem hires out bicycles including maps and route descriptions, and can also supply a picnic. Several different circuits go out in different directions from Målerås. One favourite is the 34 km Glassworks Route, including Orrefors and Gullaskruv. The Kosta Trail takes you to Kosta, where the glassworks, shopping and great food await.
More for the angler Skruvs Vildmarkscamping, surrounded by the beautiful Badsjön and Laxsjön lakes, stocked with rainbow trout. Trollagärde Vattenbruk, rainbow trout and crayfish. EmmabodaBygdens SportfiskeKlubb, species include rainbow trout and Arctic char. Ormeshaga Country Club has a fishing camp near Hovmantorp, where fishing guides will show you the best waters.

More for the cyclist Cycling in the Kingdom of Crystal is easy, with a number of cycle hire centres that can also provide you with cycle maps. There are 19 trails to choose from. The trail package with accommodation and food makes everything easy. When you arrive at your accommodation, your dinner is waiting for you, you sleep well, and you can even purchase baggage transport as an option. The Emigrant Route runs through the area where famous Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg was born, and passes places mentioned in his famous “The Emigrants” series. The trail is a circuit 100 km long.
Life from a canoe As you glide silently in a canoe across the shining water, you can get close to birds and animals. Paddling gives a new perspective, and time to take in your surroundings. A few top tips: The Lyckebyån river’s narrow waters provide a popular canoe trail. Canoe hire and accommodation can be found at several places along the river. The Ronneby river winds from Lake Rottnen in the north to Ronneby in the south. Choose between a trip of a few days or spend a couple of hours in a canoe and take a picnic basket along. Kosta Lodge offers canoeing and fishing with a wilderness feel but close to civilisation. You can canoe on Lake Orranäsasjön near Orrefors, and there’s a great place to swim at the campsite. campingen finns en fin badplats.
Golfing glee You can also experience beautiful natural surroundings on the golf course. Emmaboda Golfklubb is a medium difficulty park and forest course in typical Småland landscape along the shore of Lake Kyrksjön. Nybro Golfklubb, in Krukebo near Nybro will provide you with challenges from every tee on a forest course with a park-like character.
Kosta Vildmarkscamp Beside Lake Läen near Kosta you can find a wilderness camp where the season never ends. The lake is very popular for its zander fishing, and from late summer onwards you can try out crayfish fishing. The forest paths are perfect for hiking, running or mountain biking.
Active days at Svartbäcksmåla If you like to be in the great outdoors, the extensive activity area on the outskirts of Nybro has plenty to tempt you. Here you can find four mountain bike trails, including two that present major technical challenges and hills. If you’d rather play on your bike, try out the pump track. Runners will be in heaven with the paths and trails through the nature reserve’s deep forests. Or if you prefer to go off the beaten path, take an orienteering map and go off trail. In summer the slalom slopes give you the perfect opportunity for hill sprints! Build your strength at the ten stations of the outdoor gym. When the snow has fallen, you can enjoy cross-country skiing on well-prepared ski trails – or launch yourself downhill on slalom skis. There’s also a sledging hill and a fun playground for smaller visitors.

Wild outdoor adventure at Little Rock Lake 5000 people can’t be wrong! A zipline trip is a real pulse raiser. Literally – you’re 52 metres above ground at the highest point. “We’re talking about massive adrenaline levels on a world-class zipline”, says Peter Szabo at Little Rock Lake Zipline near Klavreström. Little Rock Lake’s Base Camp is perched on a 290 m high hill in the forest. This is the start of three different zipline routes. The Red Kamikaze, the Black Line and the Green/Blue Line, which is the family-friendly version. The longest individual section is 427 metres, and on it you can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h! It may seem dangerous, but ziplining is actually perfectly safe. “We’ve had everything from 4 to 87-year-olds ziplining here and they’ve all had a great time. Safety is the highest priority during all of our activities”, says Peter. Little Rock Lake is one of few ziplines in Sweden. The routes take between two and four hours to complete. After each section the group comes together in a tower. There are always two guides with each group, and they explain what you can see from the tower and describe the animals and plants in the area. “We see moose, deer and golden eagles quite often. Some of our 2500 hectares are key biotopes, including one tree that’s 300 years old”, explains Peter. And if you don’t want to take a great leap into the unknown, there are less scary adventures to be had. “We provide lots of other experiences, such as Expedition Getaryggarna, with a guided hike through the Getaryggarna preserve, and Expedition Rock Crystal, where we go on a hunt for precious stones in Sågebäck Ravine. You can also fish or hunt for crayfish. On the Wilderness Deck at Base Camp we have a dizzying new feature – a tall pillar that offers you the chance to dive or jump 11 metres straight down into a 6-metre deep rock basin! The pillar also has a climbing wall with trails from easy to very difficult. And for the very daring we have an underground labyrinth. “Because we go through several underwater locks, you have to be familiar with moving through water”, explains Peter.

The rustic Base Camp provides a sauna and hot tub, with a restaurant serving locally produced food such as salmon from the Klavreström River and wild boar burgers. A double wooden cabin offers overnight accommodation for up to 24 people. Last year, Little Rock Lake had more than 25,000 visitors, with one fifth of them trying out the zipline. “Many people come here for the environment. Civilisation feels very remote here. We’re right out in the forest, in the heart of true wilderness. It’s always peaceful and quiet here, and sitting by a 300-year-old tree to watch the sunset is magical!” glasriket.se

Persson & Persson
Reusing glass with Persson & Persson “I live in a glass world. I think about glass all the time and could talk about it non-stop for a week. I’m almost painfully nerdy about glass. I have to force myself to do other things, like listen to the news every day.” There’s no doubt that glass artist Morgan Persson has chosen a profession he’s passionate about. Together with his wife Elin, he’s now taking the next step in his life of glass, as they open a shop and blowing room with a focus on reusing glass. Design in a village shop The road to Ösjöbol winds across fields with red farmhouses and through deep pine forest. This is where Elin and Morgan live with their four children in an enormous house built in 1914. Part of the building houses a former village shop, where not much has changed since it closed in 1963. The stately silver cash till remains on the counter, the labels on the drawers provide evidence of their previous contents: sewing thread, buttons... Now a new era is coming. The shelves are filled with Persson & Persson’s reused glass, manufactured
in an outbuilding transformed into a blowing room. Elin and Morgan both previously worked at Hauges Miljöglas, and now they have taken over the concept from owner Leif, planning to take it still further. “Leif was a pioneer of reusing glass, and he’s been a great help during our start-up phase”, says Elin. Objects for everyday life The Perssons are making recycled glass in a new way, with a distinctive design language and references to old traditions. “We want to make recycled glass desirable by refining, grinding and engraving it”, says Morgan. “We combine recycling with quality. We’re striving for an environmentally friendly yet still luxurious feeling. The holistic approach is important throughout the entire process, from used bottle to packaging”, says Elin. What comes from the glass furnace are functional objects such as drinking glasses, carafes and vases. “In our everyday lives, we sometimes think ’this would be nice to have’ and we test the products at home before we start manufacturing them. It’s great fun to make something together, and
it’s wonderful that we get to make the decisions – without compromises”, says Morgan. A couple with vision Morgan is an established glass artist who has exhibited both in Sweden and internationally. Elin and he met when they studied at the Swedish National School of Glass in Orrefors. The couple have a constant dialogue on design. “I know glass too and have a clear image of what I like”, says Elin, who has previously worked as a theatrical costumier and a florist, and is now at Hemslöjden i Kronoberg. Morgan will be exhibiting his art glass in the studio in the former village shop. He has become known above all for his graal vases. When we meet, an exhibition is taking place in New York. “The Americans are fascinated by Swedish glass. In the autumn, I was in Chicago, where as well as graal pieces I presented entirely new glass objects in the form of large, ground sculptures with elements of wood. Now I feel relaxed and free to investigate other techniques, with my technical skill as the basis for my explorations.”

Mickejohans Konstglas
Micke Johansson conquers the USA He blows glass using incredibly advanced techniques. He’s actually the only person in the world who can produce some of his objects. Micke Johansson has become a favourite with collectors and experts alike, in demand in both Malmö and Chicago. “Nothing is impossible, that’s always been my approach”, says Micke. There’s no shortage of employment for Micke Johansson. The master glassblower has eight exhibitions this year, and he really needs to top up the shelves of the shop located next door to his blowing room, on his farm in Örsjö. International glass enthusiasts also want to benefit from his knowledge, and in the summer Micke is teaching in both Germany and the USA. Interest in glass is particularly high in the latter.
Major show The SOFA fair (Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design) in Chicago is one of the largest and most prestigious in the world. Every year, 35,000 visitors go there to buy and enjoy top class art. In November, Micke Johansson was one of the exhibitors at SOFA. He then continued to the Corning Museum of Glass. Corning was founded in 1951 and is completely dedicated to glass. The museum has glass collections, but also carries out research and holds lectures and demonstrations – where the hottest is named 2300°F, the temperature at which exciting things start to happen to glass. “I gave a show and demonstrated how I blow graal and ariel glass. There were 600-700 people in the audience, and a few hundred who followed me via live stream on the internet.” But stage fright wasn’t on the agenda. “No. Well, maybe a few butterflies, but I’ve been doing this since I was 16. At Orrefors Glassworks, we could have seven or eight coachloads of tourists every day, so I’ve long become accustomed to people watching me work. I’m confident in what I do, and the glass requires all of my concentration. It’s just really enjoyable to show off my work.” So enjoyable that he would rather blow glass than go sightseeing. “The idea was that I’d do a show and then be a normal tourist for ten days.
But I ended up blowing glass in the blowing room every day.” Micke appreciated exchanging knowledge with the American glassblowers who work at the Corning. “They welcomed me with open arms, and taught me techniques that are new to me. In the USA they use completely different techniques, and they were very curious about how I work. And they’re really nice people. My visit to the Corning was the high point of the year!” Efficient Swedes There are other differences than the techniques. “In the USA they have enormous opportunities and resources. The Americans have been working with studio glass for a long time. They have the view that if it doesn’t take at least 4-5 hours to make an object it’s not worth doing. In Sweden, we’re more efficient in our craft. We come to it from the industrial angle.” Micke finds a lot to be impressed with ’over there’, but he points out that the Kingdom of Crystal can hold its own in terms of quality. “I’m proud of what we do. We have a lot that’s really good here.” He is now continuing to develop his own art glass, influenced by what he has newly learned in the USA. “I’ll be incorporating inspiration from the American techniques – and a confident mental approach in which nothing is impossible. That’s something I’ve always advocated in my work.”

KulTuren You’re bound to find new favourite places along the 140 km long winding and beautiful KulTur trail. Choose your theme: The Landscape, Culture & History, Form & Design or Experiences. Here you can discover the tracks of the last ice sheet and industrialisation. Here are tall tales, murder and magic. And here is the sighing of the trees or the rumble of the glassworks. Take your car or bicycle and experience the Kingdom of Crystal!
James Bond 007 Museum Gunnar Schäfer loves James Bond. He has collected hundreds of objects from the films in his museum in Nybro. These include cars and other vehicles that were used in the films, such as a snowmobile from Die Another Day, a motorbike from Tomorrow Never Dies and Izabella Scorupco’s bikini from GoldenEye.
Hönsalotta’s Tramp Museum Tramps have always been part of the history of the Kingdom of Crystal. At Hönsalotta’s Tramp Museum in Boda their stories are presented through glass, paintings, photographs and the wire crafts produced by the tramps themselves. New for this year is an exhibition of alarm clocks! The restaurant serves
The Pukeberg area Bruno Mathsson’s Glass Houses Bruno Mathsson is famous as one of Sweden’s foremost furniture designers. But this native of Småland has also made his mark within architecture. The Glashus buildings in Kosta were built as housing for workers at the glassworks. They were completed in 1956 and at the time were called ultramodern experimental buildings, with innovative features such as large windows and glass mosaics. In the summer, you can book guided tours at Kosta Tourist Office.
The former glassworks area is a genuine late 19th century industrial environment. Last year, extensive decontamination was completed and now the entire area has been restored. Pukeberg Glassworks and the Swedish National School of Glass keep the tradition of glassblowing alive, and there is also a shop and a small museum. Hos Oss is a bistro and café with delicious food. The nearby Qvarnaslät rural life museum presents authentic home environments, costumes and textiles.

Skrufs Glasbruk
From tiny Skruv to the finest salons Stylish, simple, elegant. Glass from Skruf Glassworks awakens the longing to redecorate and embellish your home. Many trend-spotters have discovered exactly this, and the little glassworks in Skruv is now being mentioned in increasingly broad design circles. 12 years ago, Kent Elm took over Skruf Glassworks. But his wife Mari and daughters Sara and Frida are also very much part of the team. The family firm works closely with designer Carina Seth Andersson, Designer of the Year at the 2017 ELLE Decoration Swedish Design Awards. Together they have produced successes such as the Pallo and Dagg vases, the latter made exclusively for Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm. “The rounded shape of Dagg, with its unique dimpled surface, has been pictured in countless magazines and blogs over the last few years. Svenskt Tenn is extremely important to us. Through them, our glass reaches an extensive target group of people interested in design and interior decor”, says Sara Elm. Clothing company Filippa K chose Skruf to produce special vases blown for its new shops all around the world.
“This is just one example of orders from high-profile customers. High quality genuine Swedish craft is increasingly becoming a priority”, says Sara. Manual creations One secret behind their success is that everything really is made by hand, on site in Skruv. The jury that awarded Kent Elm the 2017 grant from the Cathrine von Hauswolff Foundation said that he and his family have achieved ”a significant cultural feat” and that “local manufacturing deserves attention from the entire world”. “I usually say that it’s better to earn less, but have Swedish glass. The grant means a great deal to me. It’s proof that what I’m doing is appreciated and that all my nagging about preserving Swedish glass has been worth it”, says Kent.
Another recipe for success is the close collaboration with the designers, something that’s appreciated by both parties. Carina Seth Andersson emphasises the advantages of being able to be present during manufacturing and of understanding the work involved. Proud of their struggle Sara Elm is proud of her father and of Skruf Glassworks. “Glassmaking is such a beautiful craft. Working with Swedish know-how here at home in Skruv is fantastic. And obviously it adds an additional dimension that we work at the glassworks together as a family. I’m very proud of my father, who runs the company. He’s a real fighter and the reason that everything is going so incredibly well for us. I started working in the shop when I was 13, and it gets more fun every year to work with Skruf Glassworks.” New products emerge from the hot blowing room in a constant stream. “We’re now making the Pallo vase in black, in three different sizes. It’s become very popular. And we have more new products on the way.” Sara’s own favourite is the Balja series by Carina Seth Andersson. “I really like it. The objects are sturdy and stand up to pretty much anything. And I love the Pallo vase, which makes a decorative statement both with and without flowers. It’s equally attractive either way!”

Children in the Kingdom of Crystal In the Kingdom of Crystal, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to entertain the entire family. For the youngest an encounter with forest creatures will be a high point, and the countryside here really is just one huge playground!
Ödevata The Småland countryside offers many adventures. At Ödevata Aktivitetsgård, the whole family can fish, go boating or canoeing in one of the nearby forest lakes. There are hiking and cycle trails, both long and short. Here you can find plenty of opportunities to swim, play, sunbathe and relax together.
Målerås for kids In Målerås Glassworks’ app we follow factory children Ebba and Ture who worked at the glassworks in the 1920s. In a combination of cartoon and video game children are led on a tour of the glassworks. They get to help Ebba and Ture make a vase to replace the one broken by the factory manager’s cat. An exciting story that takes the form of an educational game. Along the 2 km Trollstigen trail in Målerås, you can go on a troll hunt. Here and there artist Mats Jonasson’s trolls peep out. How many can you find? Towards the end of the Trollstigen you can take a break for refreshments at the swimming area. This year we are opening the “Kingdom of Crystal for Children”, with a blowing room where children can play at being glassblowers and learn more about glass. And the fun continues outside the blowing room, with a playground decorated with glass.

The best things in life What would life be without great food and drink? In the Kingdom of Crystal, you’ll find lots of both.
Hotell Amigo The hotel in Emmaboda serves traditional cuisine, à la carte meals and a dish of the day. The house classics and hamburgers are particularly popular.
Linnea Art restaurant The Kosta Boda Art Hotel contains two restaurants, with bar snacks available at Glasbaren. Linnea Art Restaurant was designed by Ulrica Hydman-Vallien. The kitchen works with the best seasonal Småland ingredients. Inspiration comes from the natural world around – forests, lakes and meadows.
Hot shop herring – once food for tramps but now a great night out The early 1900s were tough times for many Smålanders. Some of them were even forced to become tramps, roaming the countryside looking for work. When the glassblowers finished their day’s work in the blowing room, they used the furnaces to cook food. The warmth also attracted tramps who wanted shelter from the cold and a little food. In return they sang songs and told stories. And from this tradition grew a convivial evening out. Like in the olden days, Småland food is cooked in the blowing room ovens: salted herring, crispy pork, sausages and baked potatoes, with curd cake to round it all off. And today’s hot shop herring evenings still offer entertainment with music and glassblowing! You can find hot shop herring at Bergdala, Kosta, Målerås and Pukeberg.
Hos Oss – Café & Bistro Lisa and Nina’s café is located in the impressive industrial environment of Pukeberg, on the outskirts of Nybro. Good lunch and delicious cake for your coffee break every day. Beer tastings, after work events and brunches are just a few of the events hosted by the café.

Hot shop herring
Glassblowing
Warmth from the glass ovens and pleasant company. Singing and curd cake. A hot shop herring in the glassblowing room is more than a meal – it’s a whole historical evening!
You can see skilful glassblowers in action in the blowing rooms of the Kingdom of Crystal. Do you want to know what it’s like blowing through the tube? To find out how tricky it is to shape the red-hot molten glass into an object? Try it out yourself! Several glass studios offer the opportunity to try out the noble art of glassblowing.
A convivial festive evening in the blowing room
Once upon a time the ovens in the blowing room were used for cooking after the end of the working day. Work comrades assembled around the warm ovens for a meal and a drink after work. Even hunters from the forests around came along, as did tramps who wanted to warm themselves up and get a little food. In return they provided the entertainment, with songs and storytelling. From this tradition developed a festive evening which is very popular among visitors to the Kingdom of Crystal. Just like then, Småland food is cooked in the blowing room: salted herring, crispy pork, sausages and baked potatoes. And to round off the meal comes the curd cake – so there’s no risk of anyone going home hungry! And today’s hot shop herring evenings still offer entertainment with music and glass shows. You can also try out glassblowing yourself.
Be your own glass master
The Glass Factory in Boda has popular activities for children, and these include visitors being able to blow a bowl under the supervision of a skilful glassblower. Here there’s also the opportunity to try out glass casting and to paint or engrave a glass object. At Målerås Glasbruk, Orrefors Park and Kosta Glascenter both adults and children can try out glassblowing together with a glassblower. When your bowl or glass ball has cooled you can take it home with you – a memory of the Kingdom of Crystal. Blowing glass is hot, sweaty work that requires concentration, but which gives free rein to your creativity. Most people who try glassblowing want to do it again. Take your family, friends or work colleagues along for a really original craft experience.
