the Kingdom of Crystal When it came to producing the 2019 edition of Glasriket Magazine, we sat down and thought about what really typifies the late 2010s Kingdom of Crystal. And what struck us were all the collaborations. Glassworks that collaborate with designers and reach new heights. For example, Skruf Glassworks’ strong connection to designer Carina Seth Andersson has been enormously successful, but has also led to the glassworks entering the Japanese market. Artists such as Mats Jonasson and Carlos R Pebaqué find new inspiration, one by combining crystal with a new material and the other by blowing his glass in the blowing rooms at Målerås and Orrefors Park. Husband and wife team Morgan and Elin Persson realise their joint dream of a blowing room and shop with recycled glass. In the Kingdom of Crystal, nobody hesitates to turn to the very best to get cutting-edge expertise. For example, glass master Micke Johansson asks

Roger Johansson in Bergdala to grind his incredibly advanced glass pieces. Several people are talking about a new spirit in the industry. They include Mathias Ripheden at Pukeberg Glassworks. “Only 20 years ago, it was practically unthinkable that several glassworks would share a shop like we do now. Today, there’s an extremely positive and constructive spirit in the region.” We chose to have the theme of cooperation and collaboration running through the magazine like a guiding thread. Together, we are and make the Kingdom of Crystal. And we’re proud to be able to invite you to learn about all the exciting things happening here!

Kjell Engman

This summer’s major exhibition at Kosta Boda Art Gallery is directed by glass artist Kjell Engman. With great creativity, he allows the art to tell its story and introduce more humour and joy into our everyday lives.

KOSTA GLASBRUK

Kjell thought long and hard about the theme for the exhibition. “I’m fascinated by abandoned houses. In the 1960s, I was a musician on tour with my orchestra in Norrland, and on the road between Pajala and Kiruna we drove past a village that seemed to have been recently deserted. Washing was still hanging on the lines, windows were open – the inhabitants seemed to have simply walked out one day. A little while ago I asked a friend to drive past and see what it looked like today. One building was left, with the roof collapsed – everything else was completely overgrown. And my new exhibition at Kosta Boda Art Gallery takes this as a starting point, so I create an abandoned house in the gallery. It’s run down and miserable, but when we look in through the windows we see the inhabitants’ dreams of another life – of fine living and luxury.

The storyteller Kjell stages his story with glass art, music and light. “I’m a natural narrator. I’m not good at writing but I wanted to convey a story. So I do it in my own way. I create a theatrical space, a scenography, an experience that I hope will awaken emotions. When we speak, Kjell is very busy, working in parallel on objects for three exhibitions. “This is typical of me. I’m actually retired, but I want to work – it’s just such a great time”, he laughs.

Kjell has one rule: He doesn’t want anyone to have to pay to ee his exhibitions. “Entrance charges frighten off those I most want to reach – the unbelievers, if I can put it like that – children and young people who don’t naturally come into contact with art.

The humourist And there’s an objective to this approach. “I want my art to win people over to the positive side. I buy art that makes me happy. Humour is important – it reinforces the message! Kjell first discovered glass when he went to the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and spent a term at Orrefors School of Glass. “I realised that glass is a material that you can make exciting things from. And that’s what I wanted to do. Since 1977 he’s been loyal to Boda and then Kosta Boda. “I’ve never regretted it. My collaboration with my colleagues here at Kosta Glassworks is the reason I’m still here. The skilled craftspeople in the blowing room, the glass-grinding workshop and the painting studio – working with them is an unbeatable feeling. Because I don’t blow glass myself I’m dependent on them to achieve what I want. It’s a fantastic example of team work!”

Crazy ideas F R O M

Master glassblower Micke Johansson is bursting with ideas and love for glass. He combines his creative flair with great technical skill, to great acclaim. Together with his assistant Svante Dekker, he’s now giving free rein to his imagination, producing objects that are unlike anything ever seen before. The art glass created by Micke and Svante is extremely advanced. Micke combines two techniques of making art glass: graal and ariel, producing his own creations of graariel and double graariel. “There are always two of us working in the blowing room. To make the graal part of the graariel glass, I bring in Svante, because he’s really great at drawing and engraving. I blow all the glass and make the air shapes in the ariel patterns”, says Micke.

“I start by coming up with a theme for the vase, so perhaps we hear something about the Second World War and add a downed aeroplane. Then we add a treasure chest and a few sharks in the next step and it just carries on like that”, says Micke.

Detective novels and coral

Only the beginning

The work in the Örsjö blowing room oozes creativity. And crime fiction. “We listen to a lot of audiobooks while we work, usually rather unpleasant detective novels involving psychopaths, like the Lars Kepler books. We talk, makes jokes, try things out... From a Jo Nesbø book, we got the idea to make a vase with a coral reef. Don’t ask me how we ended up with that!” says Svante.

“This is a really fun collaboration, we have a great time together. We’re a bit like a married couple. Sometimes we don’t say anything at all for a whole day, but simply work away in silence. And this is only the beginning – I have loads of thoughts and ideas. There are a lot more exciting things that we’ll be showing for the very first time at the Glass Art Weekend in April”, says Micke.

“Often we get something really good out of what we first see as a mistake”, says Svante.

instagram Created for the re-opening of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Kolonn vase is currently receiving a lot of interest on design blogs and Instagram accounts. Kolonn is the latest in a line of stylish vases from Skruf Glassworks to become the hottest new interior design item. And all of them were created by Carina Seth Andersson. ”We’re a name, now! People aren’t only aware of Skruf Glassworks, they’re also proud to say they have one of our vases. I’m absolutely convinced that an important factor in our success is that our products are 100% Swedish handiwork”, says Kent Elm, who runs the glassworks with his family.

Pallo, Dagg, Kolonn…

A balancing act in glass

The next success factor mentioned by Kent is the designer Carina Seth Andersson. ”For us, Carina’s designs are the key. Our collaboration began with the Balja series, followed by Pallo, and then Dagg – the round, dimpled vase that’s a best-seller at Svenskt Tenn. Now we’ve launched Kolonn”, he continues.

She also designs in other materials, but glass is special. ”It was actually completely by chance. It just happened that I started at the Swedish National School of Glass in Orrefors, and I felt at home with the material. Glass has many limitations and amazing properties, but can really be everything from fantastically stylish to simply vulgar. Working in glass is a balancing act and a constant challenge.

”Our collaboration is characterised by mutual confidence and long-term thinking. I have the greatest respect for the craft involved – there’s simply no way of faking that. Take Kolonn, for example. That’s been a craft piece from the initial sketch and right through the entire process to the finished product”, says Carina.

The third key to Skruf’s success is its employees. ”We’d be nothing without our employees. They’re worth their weight in gold. Their commitment and professional knowledge are a major factor in Skruf’s enormous development”, says Kent.

Carlos R. Pebaqué is best known for his glass sculpture “Happy Man”, which is a super-match victory trophy for teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. “I want to create art that makes people happy. Art that helps them to forget all the misery in the world for a little while.” Carlos came to Sweden in 1976, after he was forced to flee the military dictatorship and torture in Uruguay. Once in Sweden, Carlos continued the work he had started in his homeland. “I have worked with glass all my life. First I worked with different masters, assisting them and making my own art glass. Then I started my own studio here in Gullaskruv, near Orrefors.” Pre-melted glass Today, Carlos blows his glass at Målerås Glassworks. “Working with glass isn’t easy, if you have to do it all yourself. The pieces can be heavy and it’s a tough environment around the hot ovens. At Målerås, the glass is already melted and ready for use. That means I can be fresh in both body

and mind when I work. This allows me to focus on aesthetics, and create an object where I can reflect on something and express a feeling or form.” Over the years, Carlos has developed his own unique way of working. With his own CARA-technique, he paints inside the glass with coloured glass rods. “The basics don’t change, but I often get new ideas. On my travels I am influenced by what I like and what touches me. Just now I’m working a lot with effects in clear glass and pieces that are illuminated from beneath. It’s really very interesting, and it gives the glass a completely different feeling.” New life for oven and blowing room

began two years ago, Carlos contributed his old glass oven. “The local community has always felt a great deal of pride in the glassworks, and when it closed, everyone was quite sad. The new blowing room has brought Orrefors to life again. I worked there a lot last summer, and I’ll be designing and manufacturing glass for them this summer too. The green surroundings make a great place to sit and work.” During the weekend of 26-28 April, Carlos will be opening his own gallery at home in Gullaskruv. “In my old blowing room, the glass gets plenty of space. I’m also inviting visual artists to exhibit their paintings there.”

Natural The deep, magical forests and many lakes and watercourses are one of the main reasons why the Kingdom of Crystal exists. These are the source of the timber to fire the glass ovens and the water to power machinery. And throughout the years, designers and artists have gained inspiration from nature here.

Are the fish biting? Do you have the patience to wait for a bite? Then you’re in the right place!

Ödevata FiskeCamp Out in the wilderness where forest meets lake you can find Ödevata Fishing Camp and Activity Centre. Outdoor experiences and adventures are organised all year round for both families and keen angling enthusiasts. The fish are mainly species such as perch, pike, bream and tench, but there are also waters with zander and rainbow trout. The lakes are perfect for taking a boat trip or canoeing. Here you can swim, sunbathe and relax at the water’s edge or in the sauna and wood-fired hot tub.

Pedal through the forest Cycle from one glassworks to another – it’s the perfect way to experience both culture and nature in the Kingdom of Crystal. Travel through forest and across meadows at your own speed. Cycling in the Kingdom of Crystal is easy, with a number of cycle hire centres that can also provide you with cycle maps. There are 19 trails to choose from. The trail package with accommodation and food makes everything easy. When you arrive at your accommodation, your dinner is waiting for you, you sleep well, and you can even purchase baggage transport as an option. If you want to come into close contact with the forest, there are a number of mountain bike trails.

Cycling in Målerås Målerås Vandrarhem hires out bicycles, including maps and route descriptions, and can also supply a picnic. Several different circuits start in Målerås. One favourite is the 34 km Glassworks Route, including Orrefors and Gullaskruv. The Kosta Trail takes you to Kosta, where the glassworks, shopping and great food await. This summer a new 9 km mountain bike trail is being inaugurated.

Utvandrarleden Cycle through the area where famous Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg was born, and see places mentioned in his famous ‘The Emigrants’ series. The trail is a circuit 130 km long that follows gravel and minor asphalt roads. Book a tour package and cycle between pre-booked accommodation.

Svartbäcksmåla – a paradise for the active If you like to be in the great outdoors, the extensive activity area on the outskirts of Nybro has plenty to tempt you. Here you can find three mountain bike trails, including two that present major technical challenges and hills. If you’d rather play on your bike, try out the pump track. Runners will be in heaven with the paths and trails through the nature reserve’s deep forests. Or if you prefer to go off the beaten path, take an orienteering map and go off trail. Build your strength at the ten stations of the outdoor gym. When the snow has fallen, you can enjoy cross-country skiing on well-prepared ski trails – or launch yourself downhill on slalom skis. There’s also a sledging hill and a fun playground for smaller visitors.

Golfing glee There are also plenty of chances to get close to nature on the Kingdom of Crystal’s golf courses.

Life from a canoe As you glide silently in a canoe across the shining water, you can get close to birds and animals. Paddling gives a new perspective, and time to take in your surroundings. A few top tips:

Emmaboda Golfklubb is a medium difficulty park and forest course in typical Småland landscape along the shores of Lake Kyrksjön in Vissefjärda. Nybro Golfklubb, in Krukebo near Nybro will provide you with challenges from every tee on a forest course with a park-like character.

The Lyckebyån river’s narrow waters provide a popular canoe trail. Canoe hire and accommodation can be found at several places along the river. The Ronneby river winds from Lake Rottnen in the north to Ronneby in the south. Choose between a trip of a few days or spend a couple of hours in a canoe and take a picnic basket along. Kosta Rental Center hires out canoes and fishing equipment so you can experience the wilderness while staying close to civilisation. You can canoe on Lake Orranäsasjön in Orrefors, and there’s a great place to swim at the campsite. 25

Through the Kingdom of Crystal on foot Peace and quiet, plenty of time for thoughts and experiences. A hiking trip through the Småland landscape has a lot to offer. There are many trails to choose between. They can take you out into the real wilderness if you want, but even the shorter trails bring you into close contact with the forest and the landscape.

Utvandrarleden The trail following in the footsteps of Vilhelm Mobergs is available in two versions – one for hiking and one for cycling. The hiking trail is a circuit 100 km long that takes you through three municipalities along forest roads and paths. You travel through deciduous and coniferous forest, but also past meadows, lakes and rivers. Cafés and farm shops provide perfect rest areas. You can find accommodation and restaurants along the way. You can also book a range of packages.

Kosta friluftsområde On the very edge of Kosta you can find trails between 2.5 and 8 km. They take you out into the deep forest and along the shores of lakes. A coffee break at Lake Stampasjön is highly recommended!

Stampaleden The Stampaleden trail is a 7 km long hiking trail on paths and forest roads in the valley of the Lyckebyån river, starting and ending in Broakulla.

Bielkeleden

Top tip: The Kingdom of Crystal’s guides specialise in nature and culture, and offer tours of the area where Vilhelm Moberg grew up and of awardwinning homes and gardens – and much more beside. Take a look at the extensive programme!

trendsetters Elin and Morgan Persson turn normal empty bottles into luxurious glass objects – all hand-made and thus unique. And their reused glass in practical forms has been a huge success. ”Recycling is becoming very popular, and we’re producing the right things at the right time”, says Morgan. The chickens are scratching about in the garden, a cat slinks away around a corner and in the outbuilding converted into a blowing room, glass magic is being performed. The glass is available to buy in the former village shop, which is part of the enormous wooden house where the couple live. Here, there’s a genuine rural atmosphere. ”It’s personal here. People are actually coming into our home”, says Elin.

Sustainable on several levels 36 per cent of Swedes are uneasy about buying newly produced goods, and one in five Swedes is buying more second-hand goods now than they did two years ago.

So say the results of a Sifo survey carried out last autumn on behalf of Tradera and Swedish Waste Management. Recycled items were also named as Christmas Present of the Year for 2018. The trend is clear – we want to make better use of our raw materials. ”Our business concept is contemporary. We use material that already exists, and our energy consumption is only a quarter of what’s required for new production of glass”, says Morgan.

It’s raining awards There has been plenty of appreciation for their efforts. Persson and Persson were named as New Entrepreneurs of the Year in Kronoberg County and in Uppvidinge Municipality, where they were also awarded the Culture Award of the Year. ”People in the area are very happy that we’re doing this, and that’s great fun”, says Elin, who trained at the Swedish National School of Glass in Orrefors.

one blowing room Wordless but effective communication underlies the work in the attractive blowing room in Transjö. “We each know what the other one’s thinking. We don’t need to talk very much and everything still works”, say the two masters, Jan-Erik Ritzman and Sven-Åke Carlsson. They’ve been working together for almost 50 years, since 1982, in their own blowing room in Transjö. The whole thing began at Kosta Glassworks, when a young Sven-Åke arrived to start his first job and ended up in Jan-Erik’s team. “Sven-Åke’s role at that time was to carry the glass. I was already a master with my own team. After a few years he left Kosta to start a blowing room in Åhus. And then when he wanted to come back there were actually no new people being employed at the glassworks. But I made a fuss until they took him on. I knew how capable he was”, says Jan-Erik with a smile. And so they became work colleagues again. But their minds were set on doing something different. In the evenings and at weekends, they built up their own blowing room in the idyllic little village of Transjö, a few kilometres south of Kosta. “When I’d decided to start my own business, I wanted Sven-Åke with me.

Partly because he’s a really skilled glassblower, but also because I didn’t want to work on my own. He was the only person I could imagine working with”, says Jan-Erik.

Different but similar Together they broke away from the safe existence as employees at the glassworks. “Two minds in a single blowing room isn’t always easy, but we’ve stuck together and run the company for 37 years now. It may work because we’re so different, but still come from the same background – we were both taught by the same masters at Kosta”, says Jan-Erik. Sven-Åke describes himself as the partner who’s more likely to do the planning when they work. “I think more, while Jan-Erik doesn’t hesitate, but simply starts working. It’s inspiring for me to see how he works. We complement each other”, says Sven-Åke.

A queue of talents From right since the start in Transjö, the two masters have offered students the opportunity of doing placements in the blowing room. The apprentice system became very popular. “The best talents queued up to come here, from all over the world”, says Jan-Erik. Ten years ago, Dan Clausen and Lars Skulberg, who run the company Magma Art Glass, became more permanent assistants, and now also create their own art glass. “We come together in the morning, have a bit of a chat, see how the molten glass is doing and have a nice gentle start to the day. Then we get going. When you arrive in the morning you never know what the day’s going to bring. Inspiration guides what goes on here. We have a lot of fun”, says Sven-Åke.

The Kingdom of Culture

Vilhelm Moberg, James Bond and Hönsalotta – all these and more are represented in Glasriket’s rich range of cultural activities.

The hammer mill in Orrefors The ironworks in Orrefors was in operation for three centuries, and in 2007 the old mill was declared a historic monument. The Järngänget non-profit group spent five years and 5,000 hours of work on rebuilding the water wheel, blowing machine and the hammer. On 28 June 2014, exactly 100 years after the last hammer blow fell, the mill was re-inaugurated. During the summer you can see it in operation – and taste home-baked delicacies too.

Johansfors Gallery The gallery in Broakulla presents British and Nordic studio glass from the private collection of gallery owners Duncan & Liz Timms. The focus is on engraved glass, in line with the Johansfors tradition. As well as glass, British art ceramics are also exhibited.

Gunnar Schäfer loves James Bond. He has collected hundreds of objects from the spy films in his museum in Nybro. These include cars and other vehicles that were used in the films, such as a snowmobile from Die Another Day, a motorbike from Tomorrow Never Dies and Bond girl clothing, including Izabella Scorupco’s bikini from GoldenEye.

Vilhelm Moberg’s birthplace The world-famous author was born in the village of Moshultamåla and drew inspiration for many of his characters and locations from the area. You too can visit Duvemåla, Klasatorpet or Korpamoen. Imagine what it felt like for the people walking the Emigrant Way to leave their homeland and travel to America.

HönsaLotta’s Tramp Museum Tramps have always been part of the history of the Kingdom of Crystal. At HönsaLotta’s Tramp Museum in Boda, their stories are presented through glass, paintings, films, photographs and crafts produced by the tramps themselves. And a good helping of humour! The restaurant serves classical tramp food such as isterband sausages, meatballs, dumplings and curd cake.

combination It isn’t only glass that’s produced at Målerås Glassworks, but iron too. This unique combination has become the glassworks’ speciality.

The glassworks’ own casting workshop produces iron moulds used to cast glass. Ten years ago, Målerås’ owner Mats Jonasson and his employees also began to cast iron and combine it with crystal. Today, iron finds a natural place in the art created at the glassworks. But it requires extensive work to produce the objects. “Iron requires a lot of careful processing before the finished result can be presented. We need to grind, polish and patinate over a number of different steps”, explains Mats.

And Mats has worked at Målerås Glassworks ever since. He and his family purchased the glassworks in 1988. “The glassworks is an important employer in our small village, and it’s worth fighting for.”

Mats’ impressive sculptures with iron elements are one of the characteristics of Målerås. “You can really dare to try things out and make big objects when we put the two materials together. We get a powerful, fresh combination of solid iron and clear crystal.”

the park Orrefors is a place that’s on the move. And the core of its rebirth is Orrefors Park. In the small park in front of the factory manager’s house in Orrefors stands a totally unique blowing room; octagonal and with walls that slide out of the way to make it an outdoor space. The joys of collaboration Former master glassblowers from Orrefors Glassworks now create glass in the attractive blowing room. And the approach is completely different. “We’ve chosen to shift the design process from ‘name’ level. Here we create glass as a team – from a shared idea to a shared product. Everyone involved really

appreciates it, and it stimulates creativity throughout the entire company”, says Jeanette Lennartsdotter, CEO and creative manager for Orrefors Park. An important part of Orrefors Park are the volunteers who work in the park, mending things and also running the café. “There are about 150 people, most of them from Orrefors and the surrounding area, who donate their labour with enormous levels of commitment. The whole of Orrefors Park is built on cooperation and collaboration.

The different activities – the café, the manager’s house, the hammer mill, Orrefors Museum and Orrefors Glassworks – all interact to provide an overall experience”, says Jeanette.

Glasstronomy And it isn’t just glass that’s created in the blowing room. Guest chefs are invited here and encounter new challenges when they cook food over glowing glass. – Local chefs from businesses such as Mickes Viltrökeri, Grimsnäs Herrgård and Kalmar Fisk & Skaldjur are creating new food experiences in the blowing room”, says Jeanette. With chefs, ingredients and glassblowers from nearby, active collaboration with local actors is a fundamental for Orrefors Park. “We want to benefit the entire area. 80% of our purchases and our labour come from within a radius of 30 km.”

The creation of a glassblower Would you like to learn to master the fascinating craft of glassblowing? Then why not study in Nybro?

The Swedish National School of Glass has trained craftspeople and designers since 1969. “We’re actually the only option if you want to train in glass production. Here you learn to work with the material and understand the properties of glass”, says Åke Chytraeus, who teaches at the school. A day can be structured so that the morning is spent in the blowing room, learning to blow a vase – the “hot” part of glass manufacture. And in the afternoon,

the work continues with the cold techniques – grinding, engraving and so on. “People who’ve studied here can work in glassworks and studio blowing rooms. Many designers study here to learn the material and then move on to institutes such as the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. We have a high proportion of foreign students – about half – coming from countries like Denmark, Norway, the USA, Ireland and Germany.”

The stars of the various glassworks and blowing rooms show off their latest creations, often in association with shows and demonstrations where you get to see the masters in action. This is also the first chance to see the season’s exhibitions. “We celebrate the design and craft linked to glass production. This is a party where everyone’s invited”, says Martin.

The Kingdom of Crystal’s top weekends Glass Art is the spring tradition and the starting pistol for the summer season. The vernissage weekend is a great opportunity to see what the Kingdom of Crystal’s artists can achieve when they really go all out. “This is the result of the artists’ maximum efforts, when they can devote as much time as they want to one object, without thinking about the potential price tag. Quite simply their very best work”, says Martin Robertsson, MD of Målerås Glassworks.

the blowing room The former glassworks area in Boda is now a crucible of activities. Here you can find the museum, with more than 50,000 glass objects – the largest collection in the Nordic region – together with exhibitions of old and new glass. There are also workshops and spaces for teaching the students who come from various European art schools to study for masters’ degrees. And here too is the blowing room – The Glass Factory’s hot heart, where glassblowers, artists and researchers create art and develop high-tech products. “We are extremely forward-looking. But we actively incorporate history and the archives into our work. We were named as Working Life Museum of the Year 2019 for our innovative work with immaterial cultural heritage. This involves preserving and developing old techniques for making glass; using them in new ways and new products”, explains museum director Maja Heuer.

When you hear the word “museum”, do you think of something dry and dusty? If so, you’ve never visited The Glass Factory! The Working Life Museum of the Year 2019 gives you the history and future of glass – in an interactive and playful way.

Clashes of culture Researchers and artists from different countries come together to work in the blowing room. One project involves using interactive smart glass to develop new medical devices, including aids for the hard of hearing. “This is a rare opportunity to work with such a skilful team. We can experiment and try out different techniques. The atmosphere here is special, because we all work, eat and live together, which creates a unique team spirit”, says researcher Shelley James from London. “It’s great to see how the different professions step outside their normal roles and embrace the best of what other groups are doing. It’s a stimulating clash of cultures that at the same time emphasises how alike researchers and artists are in their curiosity and creativity”, says Maja.

The Glass Factory is participating in projects with institutions in the UK, Germany, Japan and the Czech Republic. And more besides. “International and interdisciplinary collaborations are important for us and for the entire Kingdom of Crystal”, says Maja.

Cocktail This year’s exhibitions look both backwards and forwards in time. “In ‘The bouquet”, artist Zandra Ahl takes a closer look at the importance of the bouquet and the glass vase from a range of perspectives. We also have ‘Space of Hyper Matter’ and ‘1120 °C’, the exciting graduation examinations from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and the Swedish National School of Glass. This year’s museum collection, ‘Cocktail’ is launched during Glass Weekend, 26-28 April, and exudes pop art.”

Hot shop herring – once food for tramps but now a great night out The early 1900s were tough times for many Smålanders. Some of them were even forced to become tramps, roaming the countryside looking for work. When the glassblowers finished their day’s work in the blowing room, they used the furnaces to cook food. The warmth also attracted tramps who wanted shelter from the cold and a little food. In return they sang songs and told stories. And from this tradition grew a convivial evening out. Like in the olden days, Småland food is cooked in the blowing room ovens: salted herring, crispy pork, sausages and baked potatoes, with curd cake to round it all off. And today’s hot shop herring evenings still offer entertainment with music and glassblowing! You can find hot shop herring at Bergdala, Kosta, Målerås and Pukeberg.

evolution Six kilometres into the forest. A visit to Bergdala blowing room takes you off the beaten track – and it’s well worth it! Here you’ll find an extremely well preserved environment that shows how a small-scale glassworks looked as far back as the 1800s. “We love it when people come here, sit down and just drink in the environment. We also have a very popular shop, which includes a laid dinner table with a theme that changes every season. The idea is to inspire visitors and demonstrate how glass can be used”, says Roger Johansson, the owner of the blowing room.

feeling for it, but I still learn more every day.”

The art of grinding glass

The origins of the species

Roger is perhaps the best known glass grinder in the Kingdom of Crystal. “Grinding glass has always been my thing. When I started at Kosta Glassworks in 1979, they asked me where I wanted to work. ‘The glass-grinding workshop’, I said. And that’s where I went. I have a

Together with Magnus Carlsson and Lars Axelsson, Roger creates art glass and new collections for Bergdala blowing room. “Magnus is one of the very best glassblowers. Lars is the master of the blowing room, and he controls the production. And together we implement my ideas.

Roger grinds all of the glass produced by masters such as Micke Johansson and Jan-Erik Ritzman. “I could work 24 hours a day grinding other people’s glass. But I’d rather run my own blowing room.”

Our collaboration means a great deal to me and to Bergdala blowing room”, says Roger. The Evolution series is one of the most recent results of the collaboration. “It’s about the origins of life, the universe and the different stages in creation from an evolutionary perspective.” Bergdala blowing room’s lifeblood is the classic Blå Kant. “This year we’ve expanded the range for our best-seller, including with a herring platter, and the sangria jug is back too”, explains Roger.

busy days Mathias Ripheden runs his blowing room in the impressive factory area of Pukeberg, on the outskirts of Nybro, where so much famous glass has been created over the years. Today’s glass from Pukeberg is characterised by bright colours and happy forms. Mathias and his trusty squire, master glassblower Gunne Brandstedt, are very satisfied with their flexible working style. “We don’t sit at a desk and develop new products. Instead, our ideas grow in the blowing room as we work. Gunne often lies awake and thinks about something at night, and then we try it out and see if we can produce the idea in reality”, says Mathias.

Fluorescent and fiery Last year’s experiments produced a new best-seller. “We tried out using fluorescent colours in glass. They charge up in sunlight and then shine in the dark. We made large glass balls which work really well in the

garden and are very popular.” And the latest discovery is even more fiery. “I’ve begun an exciting collaboration with a potter from Falköping called P A Sandström. Between us, we have approximately 200,000 ideas a day! These currently include casting glass in wooden moulds. When the wood in the mould chars, it produces a very exciting surface in the glass. It’s actually impossible. When you pour liquid glass at a temperature of 1100 °C into a wooden mould, it starts to burn. But we’ve found a way to make it work”, says Mathias secretively.

Busy times

the blowing room’s two shops – one in Pukeberg and one in Kosta Outlet, where glass from the glassworks in Målerås and Nybro is also sold. “I’ve actually borrowed an extra oven during the spring to be able to produce everything so that we have an extra range for the summer”, says Mathias. Pukeberg is known for its hot shop herring, where substantial Småland food is served up in the blowing room. “An evening with hot shop herring also involves entertainment with music and glassblowing, and it’s always very popular”, says Mathias, who’s also responsible for the hot shop herring.

Children in the Kingdom of Crystal Målerås for kids In Målerås Glasbruk’s app we follow factory children Ebba and Ture who worked at the glassworks in the 1920s. In a combination of cartoon and video game, the children are taken on a tour of the glassworks. They get to help Ebba and Ture make a vase to replace the one broken by the factory manager’s cat. Along the 2 km Trollstigen trail in Målerås, you can go on a troll hunt around Lake Långegöl. Artist Mats Jonasson’s trolls are hiding among trees and rocks. How many can you find? In the playground outside the glassworks, there’s a blowing room just for kids where children can play at being glassblowers and learn more about glass by seeing, feeling and touching it. And the fun continues outside the blowing room with giant insects, climbing frames and lots of other exciting things.

Glassblowing At the glassworks in Målerås and Kosta, in Orrefors Park and at The Glass Factory in Boda, children can express their creativity in the blowing room. Experienced glassblowers help them create their own artworks. At The Glass Factory, children have their own section, where they can dress up as tramps and play at being glassblowers in a mini blowing room. They can also engrave and paint their own glass.

Margaretha’s Doll’s House Margaretha’s Doll’s House sells dolls, teddy bears, doll’s houses and miniature furniture. The shop is located in the former bank in the centre of Kosta, and also acts as a doll and teddy bear hospital, curing patients of a variety of ailments – a loose head or a lost arm are no match for the teddy bear doctor!

his blood At the age of just 19, Anders Lindblom took over his father’s company in Strömbergshyttan. “We concentrated on sub-contracting for other companies, with a focus on painted glass. A large glass wall for an orphanage in Bogotá in Colombia became the starting point for a whole new technique for painting glass. “We spray-painted and brush-painted the wall. And when it was finished, we began to try out more spray-painting”, says Anders.

A free hand with creativity Nybro Glassworks spotted Anders’ painting skills and in 2003 the glassworks bought his company. “It was great to come here! I could relax and focus on the things I thought were fun: designing and developing new techniques. Here I have a free outlet for my creativity.” And Anders is a productive creator.

48

glasriket 2019

“Now I’m reconciled to the idea that this is what I should do.” Anders Lindblom was born into the glass industry. Now, as a painting specialist, he’s the creative hub of Nybro Glassworks.

A large share of Nybro Glassworks’ range is signed by Anders. The latest series, Croco, is the produce of his curiosity and experimentation. “I played with colours that react with each other. Two layers of paint are applied, the outer paint layer cracks and creates a unique pattern for every object.” Lena Sonesson is a colleague of Anders, and between them they hand paint Nybro’s glass. Lena also creates her own designs, such as the Harlekin series. “We often talk over ideas and ask each other for advice about colour choices and details in our designs. Sometimes your thoughts get a bit blocked, and then it’s really useful to be able to help each other onwards”, says Anders.

Creating in concrete and metal Anders has also begun to consider other materials. “I’m tempted to work more with combining metal and glass. For the 2019 Glass Art

weekend, we’re working on an object where we mix glass, metal and concrete. There’s no mistaking the fact that Anders is happy about his choice of career these days. “I grew up with glass painting. My father and several uncles did it for various glassworks. I think my talent for painting is probably in my blood. I love to work! To develop things, find new techniques and colours to produce different effects. When I’m working, the ideas just flow out. And even when I’m not at work, the thoughts carry on at the back of my mind. What I love most is when everything just comes together perfectly, when I create a product I’m proud of that also works well in production.” And finally, we ask what Anders the painting king would really like to paint, if he could choose anything in the world. “Ha ha, I’d probably paint Kalmar Castle in different shades of blue. I love blue!”
