FIT SHOW’S RECORD RUN CONTINUES Glass News Earpiece.indd 1
July saw market leader Profine join the 2021 lineup after it’s ‘lockdown’ assets acquisition of Aperture. Joining Profine in the July signings are Granada Glazing, BCB UK Ltd and Prosale Doors. SmartReady also increased its stand space to bring their SAC brand alongside it at the show next May. Debut brands who signed up to exhibit in July included Ab Initio Software, ProSale Doors, Metsa Wood and CNC-machinery experts, Italmac. The July sales put the 2021 event at over 60% sold. Rhonda Ridge, MD of Ab Initio and the developer of AdminBase, says that next year’s FIT Show will provide the perfect environment in which to demonstrate the new features that have been introduced
The new web-based version just unveiled, together with a series of sales, survey, fitting and remedial mobile apps, will be continuously demonstrated throughout the three days of FIT on the company’s stand: “We have booked a stand at FIT Show as we believe it will provide the perfect environment in which to demonstrate AdminBase, especially as the event attracts so many installers, our primary audience,” said Rhonda. “We are very adept at demonstrating our system remotely but the opportunity to do this and engage with live visitors is very exciting as it adds a new dimension,” she added. Rhonda also believes that the timing of FIT Show in May 2021 will be perfect: “Like everyone else, we hope and believe that by May life will be returning to some sort of normality and as such, I believe it will be something of a celebration. And, whilst we have been demonstrating and installing AdminBase remotely as a matter of course for many years, we are all excited at the prospect of actually meeting so many people face-to-face.” Continuing its strong run, exhibitors who joined the FIT Show 2021 lineup in August included Uniglass, Winbag, ODL, Aston Lynch Windows & Doors, Zero Seal Systems and Logical Timber. FIT Show event director, Nickie West said: “Once again, we have been blown away by the levels of support shown by the industry across the summer months. “We believe that this has been bolstered by the reported ‘V Shape Recovery’ and hope that this positive run will continue well into the autumn as we see the full impact of the Greener Homes Initiative, Future Homes 2025 and the Government’s 2050 Zero Carbon Emissions pledge.” FIT Show, the UK’s number one event for the glass, glazing, window, door, hardware and components industry, will return to the NEC next May.

SEPTEMBER 2020
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THE BIGGEST ISSUE WE FACE TODAY? This job brings it home to me, more and more, how there can be different opinions on a subject and that there is often no correct answer to a problem. It depends on an individual’s opinion and whether they have a particular axe to grind or whether there is a specific advantage to be had for them, individually, or their company, and that sways their opinion. Now, as you know, I’m an even-handed kind of chap, seeing the good in everyone and pretty much every situation so although I’m desperate to get my windows changed, I’m perfectly willing to hear arguments both for and against the Green Homes Grant scheme. I have even saved articles from trusted national newspapers like the Daily Mail as we all know that whatever is written in that august organ can only be true (!). I was, therefore, hungrily awaiting news from one of our trade associations as to the situation on the implementation of the Green Homes Grant scheme, with September upon us. It seems as if it is a tale of disappointment for our industry. Restricting the scheme to single glazing upgrades only and to installers with PAS 2030 accreditation will do nothing for our industry and, I suspect, will cause problems for the government, too. How they are going to manage to spend £2 billion by the end of March 2021 particularly when insulation to walls, roofs and floors and even ground source heat pumps will take preference over windows and doors? Not only that, but with only one voucher per home and insulation being far cheaper than windows and doors, I believe it is said that the cash contribution for windows would only be that that was spent on insulation. Certainly not £5,000 towards your windows. Having read all this stuff on the Green Homes Grant scheme, I wondered how I could find an installer in my neck of the
woods that was PAS 2030 accredited but I was surprised to find that, on ‘phoning FENSA, that they were waiting on the government for this information. I asked if they had Trustmarked installers and, again, the answer was that installers were registering now but no list of Trustmarked registered installers existed, as yet. Googling for PAS 2030 installers brought some up but then, on looking at their websites, there was no mention of PAS 2030 accreditation. I fully acknowledge that I may not be the sharpist knife in drawer but I’m struggling at this point to identify an installer who would qualify to fit windows under this Green Homes Grant scheme. A few ‘phone calls around the industry and, after everyone had a good laugh at my query, I haven’t found anyone who knows of installers that qualify for this scheme and, in all honesty, it looks as if it is a completely dead duck for our industry. Apart from anything else, the last thing anyone needs are people waving vouchers at them when systems companies are working flat out to try and keep up with demand. Now a scheme sometime next year when all the furlough schemes and grants have dried up, and demand has slowed, may be something we would like to see. I mentioned my well-known even handedness, and the corollary to all this wishing that the Green Homes Grant would benefit us all was put into perspective in an interview with Russell Smith that you will find in this issue of Glass News. Maybe it’s because I’m a bit long in the tooth that I have always been a bit sceptical about all this global warming and carbon emissions stuff, however, listening to Russell when I talked to him about his company, Parity, and his RetrofitWorks offshoot, has changed my view considerably. He says that reducing carbon emissions is the biggest issue facing the world today, he talks about carbon emissions and that the biggest culprit contributing to them is our homes. He talks about the Green Homes Grant scheme and the levels of investment necessary…£2 billion spent by the end of March 2012 is a mere drop in the ocean. While I was trying to make a case for windows and doors he made it very clear that windows and doors are a long way down the list when it comes to curbing carbon emissions. It’s worth watching his interview. Just maybe the lowering of carbon emissions is more important than grabbing a share of the cash to fit some new windows. If we don’t, as Russell says, we may have to think of moving further north!

GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: RETROFITWORKS
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
CLIMATE CHANGE, OUR HOMES, OUR INDUSTRY AND WHERE RETROFITWORKS CAN HELP Meeting up with Russell Smith on a Zoom meeting has given Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, the opportunity to understand more about climate change issues. But why would a Chartered Civil Engineer be involved with a company called RetrofitWorks? Shouldn’t he be building railways or taking on other large engineering projects? Why is he so passionate about the significant changes needed across the UK building industry to realise the ambitions of the climate change-critical need to transform all of the existing homes in the country?
So how did RetrofitWorks come about and how has it been involved in over £12m of domestic retrofit projects since 2015? Projects are running across the country and are growing so will the Green Homes Grant scheme accelerate this process? It’s worth hearing Russell’s take on this new scheme and his expert views on how the £2b that the government wants spending by the end of March 2021 is a mere drop in the bucket of what is actually needed to meet the carbon reduction targets that have been set.
Hear about the company he founded called Parity Projects a company dedicated to transforming the existing housing stock and making greener homes a reality for everyone. Parity advises on and project manages renovations for private homeowners, local authorities and housing associations. It’s an award-winning company and holds details of some 9 million homes in the UK in its cloud-based portal.
“Our homes are the greatest culprits of carbon emissions. If we do nothing we need to all move north as climate change is a reality.”
What are the correct products to target to lower the carbon emissions of our homes? The answers may surprise you. And the calculation that says that our industry will need an additional 270,000 people working in it if we are to meet the 2030 targets is interesting – where will they come from and what qualifications will be needed? Russell Smith is a compelling speaker and well qualified to help everyone from homeowners and local authorities, to installers and the government, understand the importance to the world of reducing carbon emissions. I asked Russell what happens if we don’t follow the guidelines he has talked about. His answer?
Watch the interview with Russell Smith to find about RetrofitWorks and what it can do for you, the country, and the biggest issue the world is facing. And that’s not Covid 19!

PVCU – A PRIORITY IN
PERIOD PROPERTIES?
With over 9,000 conservations areas in the UK, preserving their character has been a national priority. When considering windows, timber has traditionally been used to maintain the traditional aesthetic of period-style properties. But should this be the case anymore? Russell Hand, Head of Product Management and Technical at REHAU Windows, investigates.
ENSURING SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
Advances in PVCu technology means the material can offer both curb appeal and leading performance and durability in conservation areas. However, preconceptions still persist, and should be dispelled.
Innovative recycling processes, combined with the thermoplastic nature of PVCu windows and product advances have dispelled notions about the material. Indeed, polymer windows are now highly sustainable and energy-efficient.
A TRADITIONAL LOOK
Suppliers like REHAU have further enhanced sustainability by investing in its PVC Recycling solution at its sister company PVCR Ltd. This investment means windows that would have previously been placed into landfill instead enjoy a lifespan of 35 years, and can be recycled up to six times without performance loss.
Criticisms about PVCu looking different to traditional materials may have been valid when the technology was first introduced to the UK market in the 1980s. However, a vast array of foils is now available, including those mimicking wood and painted surfaces used in periodstyle properties situated within conservation areas. Advancing technology around specialist designs, georgian bars and flush casements have also meant PVCu systems can now very accurately replicate wooden windows, with no compromise in curb appeal. For example, PVCu window profiles have been criticised for their overly large size. However, continued technological and manufacturing machinery innovations, combined with advances in material fabrication, mean highly convincing facsimiles of timber frames can now be made. REHAU’s Heritage range, for example, even offers georgian bars to add more authenticity to its range. Fitted to the internal and external face of the window, these bars create a grid that give the effect of traditional period features.
MEETING APPLICATION REGULATIONS The Conservation Act 1990, which charges local authorities, housing associations and building owners with the preservation and conservation of heritage structures, their materials and workmanship, has led to misconceptions about PVCu’s viability in heritage properties. Continued innovation is rendering these views outdated, and timber, not PVCu, may now be unsuitable for certain applications. Incorrectly maintained and exposed to poor weather, wood will begin to rot and deteriorate, reducing its lifespan. By contrast, PVCu enjoys leading levels of durability with little maintenance, while remaining sympathetic to existing structures. Additionally, PVCu adheres to Article 4 of the Permitted Development Rights Act, which stipulates a window’s dimensions, but not prospective materials. However, it must be noted that customers often require the conservation officer’s final approval for material choices. Also, unlike with timber windows, cleaning operations for PVCu systems can be carried out from within the building, so cleaners are not placed in danger. REHAU’s Heritage window range, for example, is designed so the opening sashes can be tilted inwards for safer measures. Specifically selected mechanical balances are also built into each window so sashes can be easily moved for greater ease-of-use. REHAU windows can also be fabricated to meet the enhanced security measures stipulated in current building regulations. Crucially, this includes Approved Document Q for security.
The increased thermal efficiency and interior protection built into PVCu solutions such as REHAU’s Heritage window enhances sustainability again. Windows represent the largest area through which precious in-house heat can escape, but these attributes mean the Heritage range not only replicates period-style property windows – they also improve overall building performance. As a result, homeowners can enjoy impressive levels of thermal efficiency not possible with single-glazed timber windows. In fact, modern PVCu windows such as the REHAU Heritage range can be double or even triple-glazed to reduce energy bills and increase occupant comfort. Windows in period properties were also not originally built with the noise levels of modern life in mind. Factors such as traffic noise, especially in busy city centres, means sound attenuation is a key priority when specifying windows for modern homes. Faced with these circumstances, the fact PVCu double-glazing units can minimise noise levels ensures homeowners remain undisturbed.
REASSURING THE CUSTOMER Installers should reassure and advise customers about planning permissions for replacement PVCu windows. This includes assisting with online planning applications and warning of potential delays in council decision-making processes. It also includes providing good literature and imagery in an application’s supporting materials alongside profile section drawings comparing new and existing materials, and providing reassurances that original window aesthetics will be sympathetically conserved in line with neighbouring properties. Alongside its work with installers, companies like REHAU also cooperate with English Heritage and Conservation Officers to ensure benefits of new materials are considered and remain sympathetic to existing building structures. As well as this, REHAU works with organisations like the Heritage Windows Group of The Glass and Glazing Federation to address issues around glazing in conservation areas and heritage buildings. In conclusion, PVCu technology can now offer both the traditional look required in conservation areas, without compromising sustainability. Furthermore, polymer solutions offer energy-efficiency and noise abatement benefits not possible with wooden solutions, without compromising curb appeal. Because of this, it is now the stand-out solution for such locations. For more information about REHAU’s Heritage window range, visit: https://www.rehau.com/uk-en/rehau-heritage-vertical-slider

BFRC CUTS THROUGH THE NOISE WITH NEW ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE RATINGS Window and door manufacturers can now offer customers increased confidence in the acoustic performance of their windows and doors, thanks to a new, independently verified noise reduction rating scheme set to launch in August. BFRC, Europe’s leading ratings system for windows and doors, is launching the brand new noise reduction rating scheme, in response to homeowners who are increasingly demanding higher levels of quality assurance for their new windows and doors. Not only must new windows and doors look the part, homeowners also want full confidence that new products will meet their expectations, including proven noise reduction performance. Windows can play a vital part in reducing the level of noise entering the home, particularly for homes close to roads, railways or impacted by air traffic noise. With homes increasingly becoming peaceful retreats from a hectic outside world, making them quieter, more pleasant places to be can also improve wellbeing. The independently verified BFRC Noise Reduction Scheme will be a huge selling point for manufacturers, who will be able to show their customers how their windows and doors compare to the competition. The labels provide an easy to understand system for homeowners, and in turn show a commitment to customer satisfaction, guaranteeing the quality of their product and ensuring they stand out from competitors.
8
New labels have been designed for the scheme, using the BFRC’s highly recognised and trusted label system, giving an instantly recognisable comparison against another product’s acoustic performance, and providing installers and homeowners with evidence that window and door products will deliver as promised. Marketing materials have also been designed and will be made available for customers. “We’re delighted to launch our new Noise Reduction Scheme,” said Lis Clarke, BFRC’s Operations Director. “There’s been a huge amount of work involved in getting to this stage and it’s very exciting to see how the industry will take advantage of a new product coming to market. “It’s important that as a market leader we continue to innovate and provide new solutions to our customers that will help them increase sales. Being able to prove the acoustic performance of their windows and doors as well as proving energy performance with BFRC ratings is a huge boost for them and provides a genuine USP as to why their products should be used over those who make unsubstantiated claims. “We hope that as the industry comes out of lockdown they, like us, see the need to respond to ever changing consumer demands and stand out from the crowd. This is just the latest in a series of exciting new developments we have planned and we can’t wait to see the new scheme being used across the supply chain.”
GGF EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT TO GOVERNMENT OVER GREEN SCHEME DETAILS The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has written to the Government to express its disappointment in the Green Homes Grant Scheme which is due to be launched in September. In letters to the respective departments, BEIS (Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) and MHCLG (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), the GGF highlighted the problems with the scheme including: • Restricting the scheme to single glazing upgrades only – when there’s an estimated 20m homes with pre-2002 inefficient double glazing • Limiting the scheme to companies who are accredited to PAS 2030 • Targeting just 600k homes in the scheme, approximately only 3% of the overall retrofit market On the letters to the Government ministers, John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented, “The GGF has received many complaints from angry and disappointed Members following the unveiling of the scheme’s details. The vast majorities of companies don’t qualify for the scheme and even if they went down the route to achieving PAS 2030, it will take time and money and doesn’t guarantee the work. After the impact

In the series Colin explains how Freefoam has taken a different approach to other roofline manufacturers who sought to take control of the supply chain. Instead, we focused on developing customer relationships and adapting our product range and service offering to help our customers sell more. “The videos are part of our #HelpingCustomersGrow campaign which highlights Freefoam’s unique approach to building our business and celebrates customers’ successes. ALU HAUS NOW FABRICATING STELLAR ALUMINIUM SYSTEM Aluminium specialist Alu Haus has become the latest in a series of fabricators to start manufacturing Stellar, the double award-winning aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems. Jason Bamford, Director of Alu Haus said: “We have added Stellar to our portfolio because it’s a visually superior product. The slimline aesthetics and the flush appearance are unique to the market, and it’s the best-looking aluminium product out there.” As Jason says, Stellar is the only aluminium system on the market to offer a fully flush casement window, which has flush lines inside and out. It means it more than delivers on the pared-back aesthetic that’s so popular at the moment. The system’s slim sightlines also tap into the trend for lightfilled spaces. They are around 30% slimmer than comparable aluminium systems, which translates to a 12% larger glass area.
As well as the aesthetics, Jason highlights the ease of installation. “As a fabricator, we’re always looking for ways to make our installer customers’ lives easier. This is what Stellar does. The knock-in single leg bead means glazing is rapid as well as contributing to the sleek aesthetics. Plus, it doesn’t have a back wedge, so there are time savings here too.” As well as offering clear advantages for homeowners and installers, Stellar also offers benefits for fabricators. It’s pregasketed, which saves up to 20% on fabrication time. Plus chevrons or corner ties are only needed on the Flush Sash Window, no shootbolts are required because the system uses fast-fit espagnolettes and all hardware is direct fix. Based in Nottingham, Alu Haus is a specialist aluminium manufacturer and supplier. The management and staff have many years’ experience and combined with

VEKA PLC CONCLUDES BUSINESS REVIEW Following the announcement that Burnley based uPVC window system company VEKA plc planned to launch a consultation process, the business has now concluded this process and can confirm that 25 jobs have been made redundant.
Fortunately, throughout the process, working with our committee, we were able to reduce the impact from an estimated redundancy of 78 roles to 25. This equates to 6.5% of our workforce and reflects the new scale of the business.”
Having taken all available actions to ensure VEKA plc remains a successful and sustainable business, the effects of the pandemic resulted in the business failure of two important customers. This has had a substantial impact, forcing the business to review their ongoing requirements to reflect the loss of business.
Conducting the process in an ever-changing environment resulted in VEKA plc taking a phased approach to the redundancies. Phase one redundancies represented roles that the business could not foresee and shortmedium term relief from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and have now been completed. Phase two roles were those roles that were dependent on seeing positive sales upturn in July; focussing specifically on the operational needs of the business to support the manufacturing demand. Due to a strong result in July and a more positive overall industry outlook in the coming months,
David Jones, Managing Director of VEKA plc briefly outlines; “Having started the process on Monday 15th June, establishing an employee elected committee responsible for taking group redundancy consultations, we have followed it to its conclusion.
12
VEKA plc will no longer proceed with Phase 2 redundancies. As a family business and part of their S.P.I.R.I.T. values, VEKA plc continues to support those affected by redundancy by offering outplacement support and extending wellbeing packages for a number of months following each individuals’ leave date. Equally supporting those employees managing the redundancy process, ensuring they were fully trained to undertake these unfortunate consultations.
“This isn’t the first time that VEKA plc had to make some tough decisions in order to weather a storm and I recognise that COVID-19 continues to impact communities and may, in turn, have further impact on business. Although I’m saddened that this has resulted in losing valued employees, by adapting and acting responsibly to ensure the sustainable success of the business, VEKA plc is not just here for now, but for the future and for life.” continued Dave Jones, Managing Director of VEKA plc.

HOW DO YOU PLAN FOR SOMETHING NO-ONE SAW COMING?
The word ‘unprecedented’ has been reaching the point of overuse in 2020, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. As businesses temporarily closed their premises and homeowners shut themselves inside as part of the lockdown, we knew the only certainty was that the future was unclear. Martin Thurley, Group MD at innovative systems company Liniar, gives his take on this unique point in history and how it’s affecting our industry. “The UK may officially now be in recession, with certain markets and sectors facing a dramatic economic downturn – but who would have ever predicted the demand our industry is currently experiencing? The reality is that the fenestration, and indeed the wider construction industry, has seen huge surges in demand, to the point that this in itself is causing problems. “This unforeseen volume spike, coming after several weeks of zero sales - combined with companies coping with back orders and attempting to return to full capacity with social distancing measures in place
14
were spending more time in their homes and gardens. With holidays abroad cancelled, and more time on their hands, it became apparent a large proportion of families were busy planning projects and placing orders – ready for when everything was open again.”
A RAPID SURGE IN VOLUME “Liniar was one of the first companies to reopen following lockdown, bringing its operational workforce back in increasingly quick stages as soon as the demand pressure became clear.
- has created a perfect storm, the likes of which we’ve never seen in the past. Unprecedented indeed!”
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? “Once lockdown measures were eased and businesses were able to re-open their doors, everyone had to address the backlog of orders from March, April and May. This was at first carried out with skeleton teams in order to maintain social distancing measures, whilst businesses nationwide undertook risk assessments and worked out how to bring their employees back safely. “At the same time businesses had stopped manufacturing, more and more consumers
“Overall demand reached record levels in June and July, compounded by certain ranges such as patio doors and fencing being up between 75% and 140% on usual volumes.
WORKING TOGETHER “Liniar’s customers have been tremendously understanding, in spite of the issues faced, and we’re grateful for the close relationships we have with them. We’re encouraging them to manage expectations with their own customers as lead times are increased, and communicating with them throughout. I can’t thank them, and our own team, enough – everyone is working as hard as possible. “As we all know, our supply chain is complex, and it isn’t just systems companies which are impacted by this surge in demand. Every supplier, from raw materials and hardware to glass and finished goods, is feeling the pain – and as we keep telling ourselves, there are far worse problems to have!
“With over a hundred new operational staff now taken on to ensure that Liniar’s extrusion and lamination operations are maintained at higher than normal capacity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we’ve been able to cope better than most.
“Working together all the way through the supply chain is the only way we’re all going to get through this. Providing realistic lead times on products and having open, honest communication down the supply chain will ensure that customer expectations are met, at every level.
“Fortunately, and as a result of Liniar’s long term high-level investment strategy, we have the physical infrastructure and capacity to adjust to these levels – however our own supply chain is also feeling the pressure, so further disruption is expected in the short term, with August also looking set to continue the high volume trend.
“It’s important as we all tackle this challenge and deal with the daily frustrations thrown our way that we remember we aren’t alone. Most companies across the industry are facing challenges – and I firmly believe that if we deal with them correctly, we’ll look back on this time and realise they have actually made us stronger.”

SPECTRAL WINDOWS CHOOSES SMART EMMEGI MACHINES FOR LAUNCH APPROACH
TO DELIVERIES
FROM EUROGLAZE Efficiency is at the core of the Euroglaze operation, so it’s no surprise that the Barnsley based Rehau fabricator has found the most efficient way to maintain its 3.5 day lead times and nationwide delivery service in a Covid-19 secure way. A new van, complete with sleeper cab and microwave, means that individual drivers can now make socially distanced deliveries across the whole of the UK, without needing to stay overnight in hotels or travel in pairs. Managing Director Martin Nettleton explained: “Demand is surging for Euroglaze products, particularly because our lean manufacturing operation means we’re able to beat most of the market on lead times. “We’ve therefore invested in an additional new vehicle, complete with driver accommodation, so that we can get the products out to customers as efficiently and as cost effectively as possible and still maintain free delivery on most orders.” Euroglaze’s despatch and delivery service was already amongst the smartest and most responsive in the industry. A bespoke tracking and alarm system ensures that only complete orders can be loaded on and off its vehicles, and ancillary packing and bagging is all video recorded so that any queries can be instantly resolved. www.euroglaze.co.uk
Emmegi (UK)’s ability to supply a brandnew twin head saw right in the middle of the lockdown confirmed to industry veteran Jason Wilder that he had chosen the right machinery partner for his new fabrication business, Spectral Windows.
Working from home, the team from Emmegi (UK) was able to source the Precision TS2 cutting centre from its Italian HQ and arrange safe delivery direct to Spectral’s East Midlands factory within just a few days of the order being placed, making sure that the company was ready to open its doors as soon as lockdown was over. Jason said: “The PVC-U saws we had bought and paid for way back in January got well and truly stuck with a different supplier during the lockdown, but Emmegi (UK) pulled out all the stops for us and got our saw to us within a week. That gave us a real head start in terms of getting our aluminium production up and running. And, as a result, when it came to ordering the machining centre to work alongside the new saw, there was no question that we would choose Emmegi (UK) again and we went for a Phantomatic M4 to complete our set up.”
The Precision TS2 and Phantomatic M4 are a popular combination for fabricators because they use the same software and operator interface.
The 3-axis Precision TS2 offers angled cutting to 45° inwards and 15° outwards, and a patented innovation by Emmegi achieves both virtual rotation of the cutting units on the saw and absolute rigidity so that positioning and profile blocking are always accurate. The Phantomatic M4 is a 4-axis machining centre featuring a high torque electro spindle which continuously rotates from 0° to 180° to machine on three sides of a section up to 170mm x 210mm. It can work with bars up to 4m long, with a moving work plane which makes loading and unloading easier. Jason added: “I’ve got many years’ experience in this industry and I know the quality of the Emmegi machines is always first class. Spectral Windows will be producing a quality product, so it’s important that our production environment reflects that.
“We’ve invested in machines which we know will give us the capacity to meet our ambitious expansion plans and will give us both the performance and the reliability we will need to meet the very specific demands of the trade market.” Spectral Windows already has two Midlands factories – one producing PVC-U windows and doors in Deceuninck and the other producing aluminium windows and doors in Smarts profile. With an experienced production team and a well-equipped factory, it is already setting the pace in the industry with a two-week lead time on most of its aluminium doors to meet surging demand from the trade. More details are at: www.emmegi.com and via info@spectralwindows.co.uk.
EXLABESA STORMS INTO FIT
SHOW’S 2021 ALUMINIUM LINEUP Exlabesa has stormed into the FIT Show 2021 lineup with a prominent stand reservation. The UK-based extruder has cherry picked FIT Show 2021 as its platform to springboard the brand amongst the UK market. The commitment to FIT Show follows hot on heels of a bumper sales period for Exlabesa over the last 3 months.
FIT Show event director, Nickie West added: “We are delighted to welcome Exlabesa to the FIT Show family. The presence of aluminium has gone from strength to strength at FIT Show and we are excited to have such a forward thinking and ambitious brand on board who will fly the flag for UK aluminium extrusion.” FIT Show is the UK’s number one, award-winning showcase for the glass, glazing, window, door, hardware and components industry. FIT Show will return to the NEC 25 - 27 May 2021, Halls 2 and 3.
Exlabesa will sit alongside AluK, Comar and a number of the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) members who will bring a broad selection of aluminium products to the floor at FIT Show next May (25-27, 2021). Speaking about their decision to exhibit at FIT Show 2021, Exlabesa sales director, Kevin Warner said: “We are looking to firmly cement the presence of Exlabesa as a leading UK extruder of aluminium. We’re one of the industry’s best kept secrets and it’s time for us to shout about our offering to the UK market. “Visitors to FIT Show 2021 can expect to see our complete trade and retail product range. NEW DUAL LIVERY FOR RESIDENCE AND WIDGETS Not a company for standing still, Window Widgets have added new dual-branded vehicle livery, which also includes graphics for The Residence Collection, on to one of their trucks, as they look to roll this new design across their delivery fleet of 18 tonne lorries. With both brands highly visible, trusted and respected in their sectors, the new vehicle livery has been carefully designed to make a strong statement, with the work carried out by local company Motus Commercials, who have already shared the striking imagery on their social media channels. As a company that showed strong growth pre-COVID-19 and have been buoyed by the considerable increase in demand since the easing of lockdown, Window Widgets and The Residence Collection have also ordered an additional vehicle for delivery later in the year. Sarah Hitchings sales and marketing director of The Residence Collection and Window Widgets commented: ‘We’re hugely proud of our marketing and many businesses in the industry see us as the benchmark in terms of brochure design and detail, social media reach and engagement and also the range of point of sale materials on offer. Vehicle livery is also part of that, as people still notice the brand on the highways and motorways of the UK, so look out for the new livery on a road near you soon!’ For further information please visit www. residencecollection.co.uk and www. residencecollectiontrade.co.uk. FOILING AT HOME profine UK have already begun the foiling of KÖMMERLING 70 profiles at their new facility in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, along with the newly acquired PVCu systems, which include the Legend platform and the Evolve vertical sliding sash window.
It’s just over six weeks since the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) launched the “Stay Safe with MyGlazing” campaign to help rebuild consumer confidence and the results so far are very encouraging with over 23 million opportunities to see the campaign and the GGF/ MyGlazing.com brands in both online and traditional media. HERE’S THE LATEST UPDATES FOR THE CAMPAIGN: Online Traffic The GGF with digital marketing specialist SLX Marketing has implemented a smart SEM/ SEO strategy to boost online traffic through paid, earned and organic search. Combined with social media advertising to attract relevant online customers, interested in upgrading the glazing in their homes, the activity is showing great progress. Online Ad impressions: 6.1 million (increase v 2019 of 900%) Unique Visitors: 59,605 (increase v 2019 of 349%) Page Views: 86,729 (increase v 2019 of 303%) Sessions: 70,164 (increase v 2019 of 374%)
With demand notably up on pre-COVID-19 levels, having an integrated on-site foiling operation has been a necessity, which is being fully utilised to cope with the significant increase in demand. From an extrusion perspective, profine UK will be looking to bring the KÖMMERLING 70 tools over from the Pirmasens and Berlin facilities in Germany in the next couple of months, with 32 tools in total transferred by the end of 2020
Consumer PR
Robert Long, production director of profine UK commented: ‘We’ve had to respond quickly to the foil lamination requirements of the Legend and Evolve systems and more recently the KÖMMERLING 70 platform. With an extrusion facility that includes a mixing plant and the post-extrusion process of foil lamination, we’re looking to respond to immediate demand and also to reduce the lead-times on special orders in the coming months.
New Content on MyGlazing.com
He continued: ‘In time we will also look to introduce new colours and woodgrains as market demand dictates and with the considerable resources of the profine Group behind us, we can also look forward to a new investment programme for the facility. But in the short-term, the requirement is to satisfy immediate orders and to build a strong pipeline of stock.’
The consumer PR is also going strong with the GGF Marketing department and Refresh PR creating and driving new content to consumers via the regional, national and lifestyle press as well as reaching homeowners with prolific social media activity. The coverage so far has featured in national titles such as Grand Designs, Your Home and The Metro. Articles in consumer media: 8 articles (3 in national press, 3 in lifestyle press and 2 in regional press) Social media posts: 79 with approx. 60 scheduled for each month of the campaign Opportunities to see the GGF/MyGlazing.com brands: 17 million The GGF marketing department in conjunction with Refresh PR has created and uploaded 9 new articles in the newly created Stay Safe online hub https://www.myglazing.com/stay-safe/. So far these pages have been viewed over 85,000 times. The Campaign and GGF Members GGF Members who deal direct with consumers are also taking full advantage of the “Stay Safe with MyGlazing” campaign, reassuring their customers by using the GGF Safe Guides for working in the home. GGF Members are also engaging with the campaign on social media and linking directly to the Stay Safe content on myglazing.com. James Lee added, “It’s most encouraging to see GGF members revising the content on their myglazing.com profile pages to attract, inform and reassure more homeowners that it is safe to get work done, so long as everyone is following the guidance. We are also getting requests for more myglazing.com van and window stickers for showrooms and will be doing another print run to ensure Members can use the logo to support the campaign. So far the campaign is going very well and combined with our Safe Guides being used by our Members, consumer confidence is being restored in glazing home improvements”. KINGFISHER WINDOWS SEES IMPRESSIVE SALES OF STELLAR ALUMINIUM SYSTEM Kingfisher Windows recently added Stellar, the double-award winning aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems, to its portfolio in June. Since then, the company has seen a phenomenal uptake of the new system and the dedicated aluminium factory is busy manufacturing orders for the trade, retail and commercial sectors. Mark Barker, Production Manager at Kingfisher Windows says feedback about the system has been positive across the board. He and his team have been impressed at how easy the system is to manufacture too. He says: “Stellar is an easy and straightforward system to fabricate and looks superb. It really is a game changer in aluminium system design and looks different from anything else currently on the market which is a big advantage for our customers.” Feedback from Kingfisher’s customers has been equally impressive. Deborah Beeley, Sales and Marketing Manager adds: “Our installer customers tell us they like fitting Stellar because it’s quick and easy to install
thanks to its pre-gasketed, knock in beads. Coupled with the fact that consumers like the slimline, flush aesthetics of the windows and doors, it’s fast becoming the go-to aluminium and door system.” One of Kingfisher’s installers, Darren Capitano from Abbey Windows in Leeds concurs with this message. He recently fitted 44 Stellar Flush Casement Windows and a French Door in a high-end consumer home. He comments: “I love fitting Stellar – it’s a pre-gasketed system that uses knock-in beads, so it’s really easy to fit. There’s nothing else like it on the market and I think it’s a game changer. Consumers love it too – the low- level gaskets mean the frames look even slimmer, which taps into the trend for big expanses of glass which are so popular at the moment, so it’s a straightforward sell. It really is a stand-out aluminium product.” Kingfisher Windows work in the retail, commercial and trade sectors and is Yorkshire’s leading manufacturer and supplier of windows, doors and conservatories. It has over 25 years’ experience in the industry, which guarantees a service that is built upon

outstanding degrees of professionalism, reliability, efficiency and promptness. Stellar from Epwin Window Systems has the slimmest sightlines on the market and is also the only aluminium system to offer a genuinely fully flush casement window. It’s fast and simple to fit, 20% faster to fabricate and it uses approximately 30%
less aluminium. It’s an impressive set of credentials that sets a new standard in aluminium system design. And as the feedback from Kingfisher Windows and their customers show, it’s delivering what the market needs. Tel: 0845 300 9356 www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

GLAZERITE CHAIRMAN JOHN HEWITT RAISES NEARLY £80,000 FOR CHARITY Glazerite UK Group’s Chairman, John Hewitt, has completed his epic 1,000-mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in memory of his late daughter Kelly, who took her own life in 2018.
“We couldn’t have done it without them and every penny raised will go towards educating people and suicide prevention. The support received will literally help save lives.”
John was joined by 11 friends and family nicknamed Kelly’s Heroes - for the arduous 13-day challenge, which saw them climb 59000ft and battle through wind, rain and occasional sunshine. As a result, the team has raised an incredible £80,000 so far for the charity We Mind & Kelly Matters, which John and Kelly’s mum and sister set up to honour the 24-year-old. John explains: “Kelly took her own life following a short battle with anxiety and depression, something which sadly affects millions around the world. We don’t want anyone else to experience the pain we have, and we feel that the best way to remember Kelly is to do something positive in her memory and support others who are struggling with mental health issues.” Kelly’s Heroes set off from John O’Groats last month and arrived in Land’s End on Friday 28th August to a socially distanced crowd of well-wishers. Remarkably, many of the people they passed or met on the route have since donated to the charity, something which really touched the team. John adds: “It was a memorable experience for us all. The pain we experienced was wiped out by the jubilation we felt when we reached the end of each day. The hardest part for me was cycling up the Kirkstone Pass in Cumbria in extremely windy conditions. I was in tears, but I knew I had to keep going, not for me, but for Kelly, and those who struggle with their mental health daily.” Prior to and during the ride, Kelly’s Heroes received huge support in the form of sponsorship and donations from the fenestration industry, as well as suppliers and customers, including main sponsors VEKA and the Independent Network. John adds: “Myself and the team have been hugely supported by many of Glazerite’s suppliers, customers and competitors, and many others from the industry. It’s been such a huge outpouring of support for what is a global problem that affects us all in some way or other, and the whole team are immensely grateful. We couldn’t have done it without

them and every penny raised will go towards educating people and suicide prevention. The support received will literally help save lives.” The team also received messages of support from sporting legends including former Arsenal and England footballer Kelly Smith MBE, current and former Northampton Saints rugby players Harry Mallinder, Alex Waller and Steve Thompson MBE, and cycling commentator Phil Liggett MBE. The next steps for We Mind & Kelly Matters are to continue to promote awareness of mental health issues in Northamptonshire’s schools and businesses, where Glazerite has its headquarters, as well as support the work of other charities like MIND. There are also plans afoot for another cycling challenge in 2022. John adds: “We will never forget Kelly and we will do all we can to help others in the same position she was, and hopefully make a difference.” www.glazerite.co.uk

GREEN HOMES GRANT – UPDATE Dear Editor, The latest news in the Green Homes Grant (GHG) is that there is little change for replacement windows, as we predicted openly in our members forum on social media. We were 99 percent sure this would be the outcome, as the indications in conversations we had been having with Government was looking like grant money would only be available for single glazed windows. There is still an opportunity with energy efficient entrance doors, but this too could be slim pickings as it is a secondary measure, and proof of insulation is likely to be required before this will be eligible. However, there is no reason to be negative about this. We now have our knees under the table at these meetings, and it’s likely that the next tranches of grant money will be more favourable to the glazing sector if we continue to position ourselves correctly. For many years, the industry has not been represented in cross trade talks. That is because previous contact with Government had removed glazing from involvement with bodies such as the Construction Leadership Council on the basis that glazing was not part of construction. This may have saved some large glazing businesses from paying into CITB levy, but it has left us somewhat isolated and away from many funded skills initiatives. Of course, this meant every battle had to be fought against the other trades, rather than as a construction collective.
Since I have been at Certass Trade Association, I have spent a lot of my energy building the relationships with other heads of trade organisations to get us seen as part of the construction group by Government. These were long term measures, and we can see that they are starting to take effect. We were included by Government in discussions around COVID-19 and GHG, and this looks like it will bring us closer into future conversations and consultations. Less than 3 percent of homes in England gain from the GHG, and that leaves 97 percent of homes available for the next initiative. Discussions are already happening, and we are part of those. Nothing concrete has been decided, but the fact we are part of the discussion is a big step forward. At Certass TA, we knew through early stages of coronavirus that any knee jerk reactions would cause members more hardship and extra cost, at a time they when they could ill afford it. Government changes were coming thick and fast, so when we interpreted Government guidance, we aimed to give it a measured and thoughtful response. Where we needed further clarification, we sought it out directly with Government ministers and civil servants to ensure the information given to members was the best it could be. It worked, in hindsight our predictions have been shown to be correct and our members given the right advice at the right time. Certass TA is backing the industry, we see that being part of conversations will mean bigger benefits to everyone in glazing, and while GHG has been an unnecessary distraction for many companies, collectively we are likely to reap bigger and better rewards in the future. Yours sincerely, Jon Vanstone Chairman Certass Trade Association

LETTERS Dear Editor, It’s fantastic to see more and more fabricators and installers beginning to promote their Smart offering as they realise its potential as our industry’s next big opportunity. But in light of some recent trademark confusion, which I am not going to go into, I’m writing with a word of warning, but more importantly, with some advice. Just because a product name sounds good or a logo looks good, or you think it helps sell your product better, it doesn’t mean you can just use it. Every business needs to be aware of exactly what they’re promoting. It is part of a company’s responsibility to do their research, to become commercially knowledgeable about those that they share the same market with and understand what trademarks are already out there. By not performing the trademark due diligence step, companies not only risk confusing their own customers and undermining their brand, they also may risk hugely expensive, drawn out legal battles that could amount to financial ruin. The time, effort and money it takes to get a brand right, to ensure that it connects with consumers and consistently delivers on its promise, can never be underestimated. More often than not, a lot of creativity, flair, work and a huge amount of money has gone into making the name and logo what it is. When a brand is created, the holy grail of any outcome is for your brand’s trademarked name to become a noun or verb: Google, Hoover, Sellotape, Post It, CashPoint, Band Aid, Super Glue to name a few. Each one of these products started out as a trademark and brand of an individual product, but most people now use the term to refer to an explanation of what the product does and this is regardless of the actual brand people are looking at. These sorts of brands come when there is no doubt or confusion, and this comes from standing firm and protecting the brand, particularly in the early years, through the legal system on trademarking. We’re already starting to see this happen across the industry with

"I know no one can own a word, but someone can legally own a word that means something different to the consumer when thinking of that word or combined words. There are many elements that go into forming a brand and the service it sells, and words are an integral part of that. Using another company’s words that are trademarked to describe in context your own product that can be similar in nature, can amount to trademark infringement." the Smart Ready® service, and I’m deeply proud of our achievement. To avoid trademark infringement, it is not enough to swap words around, say I wasn’t aware, or simply use the excuse of ‘words just being words’ - you don’t own words. Of course I know no one can own a word, but someone can legally own a word that means something different to the consumer when thinking of that word or combined words. There are many elements that go into forming a brand and the service it sells, and words are an integral part of that. Using another company’s words that are trademarked to describe in context your own product that can be similar in nature, can amount to trademark infringement. I have invested an enormous amount of time, money and energy in the developing Smart Ready® and the service around it. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise for the reader to hear that I will protect the brand before I will think to blink. But it’s broader than just me and my businesses. As an industry, we learn to be prouder to protect what we’ve created, and take branding and trademarks more seriously, especially now that Smart is emerging for windows and doors. I think the window and door industry as a whole should be more understanding and resolute in that defence. Let’s face it – we’re all hoping for that coveted Noun/Verb status, and you can only get this if brands and their trademarks are respected. My advice? Sit down with a specialised lawyer and do your research before you create a brand, logo, or even settle on your company name and above all, if a name or logo looks good and fits well with selling your product, it doesn’t mean you can use it without consequence.
Dear Editor, COVID-19 has changed the way we live and work on many levels. This includes highlighting and reinforcing, something which has long underpinned our own working culture - the importance of transparency. We have written to our customers to explain some of the challenges that we face within our supply chain. I believe that some of those points are worth wider, public discussion. We’re seeing a boom. That’s the good part. Our supply chain is, however, creaking under exponential growth in demand. This isn’t unique to Emplas. Every major systems company, hardware and glass manufacturer is struggling to meet supply. As a consequence, so are fabricators. We have capacity, we have capability - but the availability of glass, foiled product and some hardware is forcing us to push out lead times. There is no point in trying to pretend that our supply chain, or as a consequence those of our customers, are unaffected by this. From the conversations I am having daily with fabricators nationwide, the delays on foils are a universal problem. That is supply not only of one or two profiles. Foil lead times on all leading systems have been extended. There’s volatility in glass supply (with an inhouse IGU capability we and our customers are to an extent, insulated from the worst of this). There are also significant shortages of hardware. So, what are we doing about it? Well, I believe everything we can. We have redirected
resource from our own retail businesses, here in the UK and in Australia, to prioritize the supply of product to our trade customers. We have taken some very difficult decisions about who we supply. Focussing on the customers who have committed to work in partnership with us and whose loyalty we are doing everything within our power to return. Similarly, we are working closely with our suppliers, sharing forecasts with them on a daily basis to support them in managing demand. We are bringing forward manufacture of standard non-foiled product to build additional capacity within our systems, so that as soon as those foils that are currently thin on the ground come back into stock at volume, we can double our efforts to turn orders around. If, however, our systems provider cannot deliver foils to us for six weeks because their supply chain is also struggling with demand; or hinges are not available because they are not in the country; or because certain laminates or coatings aren’t available to manufacture IGUs - then our ability to deliver to our own customers within ‘normal’ lead times is also impacted. It’s no easy task to switch a large business ‘back on’ after lockdown. We started early and that’s allowed us to build in-line with demand so that we have had full capacity reinstated for past month or more. Systems companies needed greater volume to justify turning production back on again. As a consequence, they have had to go from a standing start to exponential growth in demand and 150% of capacity, in only a few weeks.
This is why I am asking for understanding, from our customers and the window and door supply chain at large. There is no way for me to ‘sugar-coat the pill’ but for the next month or two at most, we need to engage and explain to the end-user that lead times for new windows and doors are going to be extended. That’s not on every product, we continue to be able to supply for example the AluK F82 bi-fold on lead times of only 15-days; standard product is also available on more or less normal lead times. On some products, people are, however, going to have to wait. We believe our customers will understand that this is not about our capacity or our will to deliver - but the availability of product to manufacture. We have great partnerships, we have purchasing power and are mobilising both to put our customers at the front of the queue. To a point, however, we all have to wait a little in line. Homeowners will generally be prepared to do this for good tradespeople and the right product. With regret, we’re going to have to ask the same from our customers on certain products. This is, however, short term. And we expect to be able to reinstate normal lead times as soon as we can. Up until then, we need approach business with a new openness, connecting the supply chain from systems companies to installers and ultimately to the end-user, in order to manage expectation. We are all in this together, so we all may as well pull in the same direction. Yours faithfully, Ryan Johnson
Yours sincerely Giovanni Laporta, inventor and innovator of Smart Ready®

TIME TO DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND Dear Editor, Following yet another controversial glazing industry pre-pack administration, Gary Morton of the Boing Boing Group gives his take on the practise, and how the industry should respond. Once, there was a real stigma attached to going bankrupt – and as a society, it’s good we’ve become a little more compassionate. Sometimes, businesses fail through no direct fault of the people that own and run them, and those people deserve our understanding and support, if appropriate. But it is also feasible for companies to take advantage of our collective generosity and goodwill. This, unfortunately, is what we have seen with the recent collapse of the Customade Group. In June, the company was placed into administration, owing huge sums of money to its suppliers, crown debt and worst of all, a fair number of its employees. However, within minutes it had been bought by Dutch private equity firm Nimbus, as part of a ‘pre-pack administration’, and resurrected as a new company – unbelievably, headed by the exact same management team. Incidentally, the new companies were set up in early February, way before Covid-19 struck. In certain situations, pre-packs are a good thing – they can rescue struggling businesses in a way that saves jobs, which, in the longer term, helps the suppliers, employees and customers who rely on them. But as cases like these demonstrate, in practise they are often used for all the wrong reasons. When executive mismanagement takes thriving, well-regarded businesses and destroys them, they can let the people responsible walk away without any repercussions – and leave suppliers and former employees to pick up the pieces. No consequences, no responsibility More or less, three hundred people lost their jobs as part of the Customade ‘prepack’ deal – most of them by text message. Hannah Bardell, MP for Livingston, where a lot of those jobs have been cut, said she was ‘disgusted’. She’s not the only one. I’ve received dozens of messages from suppliers and employees left hanging. But the thing I find most appalling of all is that the company’s management have not taken a shred of responsibility for what has happened. The arrogance of it is breathtaking. The industry rumour mill is awash with tales of strong-arm tactics to enforce continued supply, customers forced to pay the debts of Oldco, and Newco not standing by their product warranties.
26
When you run a business, you get highly paid, but the buck stops with you – that is the trade-off. Be humble, admit errors, adapt your attitude to fit the occasion, but no… not these guys. It seems they aren’t willing to accept any responsibility whatsoever, blaming IT viruses, Covid-19, bad debts and more. During pre-packs, administrators are required to submit a report on the conduct of a company’s directors. Let’s just say I think this one would make for very interesting reading – if it’s produced correctly! Time to draw a line in the sand It isn’t the first time pre-packs have allowed devious management and directors to cause huge damage to our industry, and leave the businesses who depended on them struggling to make ends meet. But as a sector, we’ve got the power to make this type of pre-pack socially unacceptable. For the sake of our industry and all the great people in it, I think we have a moral responsibility to stand up to companies like these – to tell them that if you treat your suppliers, your customers and your employees with such disdain, we won’t work with you. When incidents like these have happened in the past, I’m sorry to say, many of us have been shown to have very short memories. We’ll get angry about it for a bit, but soon slip back into the familiar routine, and start giving them our money again. This time, we have to do better than that. It’s extremely encouraging to see some of the industry’s most respected suppliers and the media refusing to deal with Customade’s latest incarnation - Glass Times, the FIT Show, VBH and Veka to name a few. Hats off to them for taking this stance. My hope is that many other businesses will follow suit. Doing the right thing Doing the right thing is rarely easy. Especially in times as uncertain as these, we’re all under pressure to take every bit of business that comes our way. But if we just roll over and let those responsible get away with it, we will only have ourselves to blame when the same thing happens again, as it inevitably will. For more information visit www.centralrpl.co.uk or call 0121 500 0505.
Dear Editor, There’s been a lot of talk in the press over the last week about lead times and the supply chain and I have to agree that we are all creaking at the seams in this post-lockdown boom. Let’s not bury our heads in the sand and pretend that any one of us is delivering on time, in full – no matter what investment has been made into systems, machinery, facilities, etc. But, what I think is a fair point to make is that the majority of us in the supply chain are doing their very best to deliver and agree that the most important thing is to be transparent with your customers. DOORCO is one of those companies that has invested, across the board. We place a huge emphasis on stock and came out of lockdown with bolstered levels. We are also in the unique position that we are independent in both the UK and Korea, so we can react quicker than most. But it’s still not enough. We saw 1000’s more doors than usual come through our prepping lines in July, a 34% increase, plus a 10% increase in distribution slab sales. There has also been a massive shift in demand, with consumers making bolder choices in style and colour – this adds even more pressure to suppliers because we move into supplying the “added value” services like painting. As we came out of lockdown, we were just thankful to be opening up and unfurloughing some of our staff. We certainly didn’t predict this boom. We are doing all we can to keep on top of this with double shifts in Korea to get the slabs to the UK, and in the UK to make the doors and support our customers. We are in constant communication with our suppliers and customers, sharing stats and predictions, and ordering as much as we can but we are up against widespread stock outages higher up the supply chain. I appreciate the patience and understanding the customers are showing right now. We will improve and we will improve quickly, and we all hope for the continuation of the good problem to have - higher volumes than expected. Yours sincerely Dan Sullivan, MD, DOORCO
"We are in constant communication with our suppliers and customers, sharing stats and predictions, and ordering as much as we can but we are up against widespread stock outages higher up the supply chain."
SETBACK FOR CONSTRUCTION RECOVERY CAN BE FIXED WITH SUCCESSFUL GREEN HOMES GRANTS SCHEME, SAYS FMB Dear Editor, Government must release the breaks on sluggish construction sector activity by stepping up its support for builders who want to get accredited for the Green Homes Grants scheme, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). This is in response to Construction PMI data, published today, which shows that growth slowed in August, with respondents citing a lack of new work to replace completed contracts and a ‘wait and see’ attitude among clients. Jessica Levy, Director of Communications of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), said: “The slowdown in growth reported in today’s Construction PMI report points to the need for policies which sustain much-needed jobs and activity, and give consumers confidence to invest. The Green Homes Grants scheme has the potential to do this, but just weeks away from its roll out, the Government needs to step up support for builders to gain recognition for their competence and high quality workmanship and register for the scheme. Rightly, the focus is on competency, but the mechanisms proposed are complex, especially within the Government’s ambitious timescales. "The time and costs involved in accreditation risk putting off quality builders who otherwise are committed to doing their bit to achieve Net Zero.” Levy concluded: “We know that the Green Homes Grants will be put under the microscope before more public investment in energy efficiency is brought forward. "The FMB is campaigning for the Government to commit to a long-term, ambitious plan for green homes at the Budget, that will lead to sustainable jobs and organic growth in the energy efficiency market. This will increase business confidence to step up and make the Green Homes Grants a success.” Jessica Levy, Director of Communications, FMB

GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: TOMMY TRINDER
SOFTWARE THAT CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU SELL. THAT’S FRAMEPOINT FROM TOMMY TRINDER. It is interesting how the Covid pandemic has changed so much in our lives and many of these changes may become permanent features. Certainly, the adoption of technology which was already well underway, has accelerated such that we seem to have leaped ahead of where we would have been without this worldwide crisis. Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion talks to Tommy Trinder founder and CEO about the Framepoint software and how its usage has changed since the lockdown in March. Has the Framepoint software changed the way products are sold and is there evidence of this change from the installer
customers? Originally, the software was to enable installers to talk with their homeowner and show windows and doors to them, even in a picture of their own home, and change styles, colours, add hardware and so on. Has that changed? Is Framepoint now an effective remote sales tool? If Framepoint is being used by an installer from their office with the customer in their own home, can the more mature customer (OK, I mean us old gits) get their heads around the use of the software? After all it’s the older generation with savings who are the most likely paying customer. Proof of the pudding is in the eating, so what are the statistics? What are the number of quotes being generated by those using Framepoint and what proportion results in a ‘makeover’: the visualisation by imposing product images onto a photo of the customer’s home? Even more important what is the sales value generated? And you really want to know that answer! With everyone watching their spend in these difficult times, is Framepoint a marketing cost that installers can do without or an essential sales tool? If it is essential, does the software hold images of every product from all systems companies so an installer can get started immediately? The
answer is both interesting and surprising as is the ability of the installer to configure the software for special products. More importantly, can it really cost as little as £95 per month? Watch Chris Brunsdon’s interview to get the answers to all these questions, and more. Chris is not a techie but a window salesman, through and through, so he’s talking from experience. Entertaining, amusing and extremely knowledgeable and with compelling software: this is an interview you want to watch.

Managing Director Graeme Bailey says the Group is determined to cement its position as market leader and has the capacity and resources to continue investing in the people and the product development which will enable it to do that.
STELLAR ALUMINIUM LANDS IN LOGIKAL BM Aluminium has just announced the release of the software dataset for Epwin’s Stellar aluminium window and door system, giving fabricators the freedom to use its LogiKal software to price and process jobs in Stellar for the first time. The programming team at BM Aluminium have partnered closely with Epwin’s design and technical team over several months to create and launch the dataset, so that it includes all the casements, flush doors, lift and slide patios and bi-folds available in Stellar. Dean Hodges, BM Aluminium’s Managing Director, says: “LogiKal is the first-choice software for the vast majority of aluminium fabricators in the UK, and that’s partly because they know it contains the most comprehensive range of databases. We work hard to ensure that all new systems are

added into the software as soon as we can, and Stellar is already the second new system we have added since the end of lockdown.” For Epwin, making the Stellar dataset available within LogiKal is likely to further boost its appeal as a fabricator friendly system. For customers who are already using Stellar, it will enable them to process jobs more quickly, while for potential new fabricators, it makes adding the innovative new system to their product offering much easier. Paul Booth, Design Director at Epwin, explains: “Using LogiKal, fabricators who manufacture in more than one system can switch effortlessly between them and build their own bespoke ranges which can all be processed in the same way. “It was important then for us to bring Stellar in line with the rest of the market, while obviously also still emphasising the many features and benefits which make it stand out.”
He explained: “Business Micros is rooted in the fenestration industry. We’ve grown alongside the industry we serve and have stood side by side with our customers for more than four decades. “Our team have always been our greatest strength, which is why we continued to recruit during lockdown and why we have built a culture which is firmly rooted in supporting and nurturing our team. I firmly believe that we now have the biggest, most committed and, crucially, the most experienced team in the industry.” Behind the scenes, Business Micros and The Consultancy were busy during lockdown putting the finishing touches to the brandnew TOUCH software platform which offers market-changing, fully integrated sales, ordering and lead generation solutions for both fabricators and installers. TOUCH Portal for fabricators and TOUCH Vendor for installers will both be launching very soon via the website at: www.bm-touch.co.uk. Graeme added: “We’re seeing a flurry of new remote pricing and selling products coming onto the market now as companies look for ways to meet surging consumer demand within the constraints of a socially distanced world. “However, it is the experience of our team which is built into every aspect of TOUCH which will undoubtedly differentiate our products from the rest. We know that what really matters and what really adds value when it comes to remote selling is a joined-
up solution which uses real time data for pricing and design and allows quotes to be generated and orders placed using the same system. “TOUCH Portal and TOUCH Vendor combine all of that and come from the Business Micros team, who hold continually updated datasets for every window and door system in the UK, and The Consultancy team, who are the market leaders in cloud-based ordering solutions and online quoting configurators. “When times are tough, it surely makes sense to align yourself with the number one in the market and benefit not just from our vast knowledge and experience but also the resources we have available to go on supporting customers and expanding our TOUCH platform. “We’ll be rolling out new options in TOUCH over the coming months, but customers using our existing products can be reassured that we won’t be neglecting them either and will continue to provide full levels of support.” More details at: www.businessmicros.co.uk, www.bm-touch.co.uk and www.theconsultancy.co.uk.
BM Aluminium has already started releasing the Stellar dataset to customers, and its installations and support team are on hand to support both existing and new users with downloads and installation packs. Epwin has also produced an accompanying technical manual to guide fabricators through specific project file and pricing imports which enable them to tailor the data to their own business set-ups. Dean Hodges adds: “We can provide remote and online training as required, all in line with Covid-19 guidelines of course.” www.bmaluminium.co.uk www.stellaraluminium.co.uk.

LINIAR ANNOUNCED AS NATIONAL AWARD FINALIST Denby-based manufacturing company Liniar has been shortlisted for the Positive Social Impact award at the prestigious 2020 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards. Previous winners include fitness sensation Joe Wicks, DPD UK and Hotel Chocolat. Liniar’s entry focused on its ongoing community focus, including the innovative company’s efforts to help the nation's key workers during the COVID-19 pandemic by producing and supplying protective visors. This continues alongside its normal operations of producing thermally efficient and low maintenance PVCu products for the construction industry. Group Managing Director Martin Thurley commented: “We’re delighted to be recognised for our achievements at a national level for the work carried out by our teams to help address the nation’s PPE shortage. Our culture is very community focused and we like to help wherever we can, so it was fantastic to be able to contribute to keeping people safe. To be shortlisted at the National Business Awards is the icing on the cake.” The next stage involves a judging panel, which will be carried out virtually by video conference in September, and winners will be announced at a dinner in November. Liniar is up against stiff competition in this category, including Mindful Chef and Octavia House Schools. “When it comes to business recognition, the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards are the ones to win. They allow any successful organisation to tell their story, from large private and public companies, to thriving entrepreneurial businesses, promising start-ups and established SMEs,” said Sarah Austin, Awards Director. Liniar’s protective visors are still available, and are free to NHS and front line workers visit www.liniar.co.uk/ppe to find out more and order. “We install windows, doors, conservatories plus a fair bit of roofline and business is crazy at the moment; we could do with more people all round, fitters, office staff, surveyors. But I am reluctant to go all out to recruit more people because surely, the bubble has to burst soon. What do you think?” AP Berkshire Ah, AP, so you too have heard about the all-seeing DannyEye, that so miraculously allows me to see into the future! I hope that you also appreciate the generosity with which I use such powers, using them as I do only to help people in the glass and glazing industry with incredible insights…yeah, right. But to be serious…we at Pioneer are enjoying the spoils of the Coronavirus War which, given the total uncertainty that we were all presented with at the beginning of the year, is bizarre. However, whilst sales at Pioneer are nicely ahead thank you, rather than through pent up demand, our gains are coming through new customers. These came to us after their previous trade fabricators let them down by not being there for them during the pandemic and especially the early days; we, on the other hand, did not padlock the gates at the first sound of a sneeze and were open throughout, albeit at appropriately reduced output. Just as everyone else is doing, I am making hay whilst the sun shines, even as it tips it down in gale-torn Essex whilst I consider these latest words of dubious wisdom. Our retail customers are doing OK thank you, generally installing as fast as they can sell, but lead times are extended as a result
“Just as everyone else is doing, I am making hay whilst the sun shines, even as it tips it down in gale-torn Essex whilst I consider these latest words of dubious wisdom.” not only of demand but also due to the continuing shortage of some materials and components. It only takes shortage of one key component and the whole schedule is stuffed; installers must learn to adjust their advice to their homeowner customers, or they will disappoint. It will be this way for some time to come. Overall therefore, things are a lot better than we ever could have expected them to be when the brown stuff hit the fan six months ago. But, how long will this last? I struggle to find any credible so-calledexpert opinions about where we are all now headed. Even the Bank of England continues to revise its forecasts; with the August report well behind the curve as August property sales run at 60% ahead of the same period last year. Crazy stuff. There is no doubt that unemployment figures will surge as reality replaces the furlough scheme which, whilst admirable, has provided a poultice for redundancies that were always inevitable. These will become a torrent when furlough payments are progressively removed in the next few weeks. The estimates I have seen of 4 million plus may therefore be conservative. However, as
regrettable as any unemployment is, many perhaps even the majority of those finding themselves without a job - will not be in your target market AP, with staff from the most exposed industries such as high street retail, hospitality and the travel industries in all sectors bearing the brunt. And whilst travel, tourism and hospitality will come back slowly, high street retail will not; our shopping centres have been ravaged but coronavirus has accelerated what was an inevitable decline. Which to my mind means that homeowners’ focus on upgrading existing homes as well as buying new ones, will continue at least into the New Year; if nothing else, demand that remains pent up simply because of our inability to get round to everyone, will take us through the autumn and into 2021. Having said that…the all-seeing DannyEye remains a tad cloudy when it comes to resurgences in the virus and resultant disruption, because we are a long way from what might realistically be termed ‘normal’. And whilst we have these bleeding hearts that whinge about getting caught overseas despite Covid-19 remaining alive and well and living amongst and in us, there is always the danger of everything going decidedly pear shaped again. However, what I place my faith in, above almost everything else, is the apparently insatiable appetite of our people for lavishing improvements on their homes and especially, with bright, shiny new windows and bi folds. White Gold indeed, even in a pandemic. My advice to you therefore AP is – go for it! Squeeze everything that you possibly can out of it and don’t look back. Hesitation is the thing that will hurt you most.

We knew from previous experience we could trust Haffner Murat to deliver the fabrication solutions that were right for us. The quality of their machines coupled with the expert advice from Matt Thomas and the Haffner Murat team has been exceptional. These machines will allow us to increase our output to 1000 frames per week without additional manpower.” Burbage Custom Windows is a family run business which has been established for over 20 years. Based in Hinckley, Leicestershire they manufacture a wide range of PVC-U window and door products to exceptional standards and offer a quick turnaround. One of the clearest indications of a reliable and trustworthy business is how previous customers are willing to return when they need to make a new investment. Haffner Murat’s returning customer rate is exceptionally high and Dan’s comments show why. Tel: 01785 222421 www.haffnermurat.com

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE OTIF
WHY SUPPLIERS NEED TO DO MORE TO HELP CUSTOMERS COPE WITH DEMAND I write a regular blog on the Mila website at https://www.mila.co.uk/blog/. Over the years, it’s become one of the most visited pages on the site, largely I think because I always try to give honest insight and straightforward updates on the business and the market.
DHF has recognised that there are a number of key issues currently facing the building hardware sector. Examples of these are, of course, the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and what measures should be taken to limit its spread, in addition to the greater levels of safety now having to be met as a result of this, for example, anti-COVID hardware and fullyautomated doors to enable access with no human contact. In addition, CPR (Construction Products Regulation) and Brexit, CE versus UKCA marking and whether companies will be required to hold both UK and European marks, and the mutual recognition agreement and the issues that might bring.
Of the 20 or so posts I’ve written this year though, no less than 17 have been on the single topic of Coronavirus – going as far back as February when it first started to become an issue for some of our suppliers in the Far East. I’ve charted the spread of the disease, the lockdown, the reopening, and now of course the pressure on suppliers to keep up with demand. My aim on the blog has always been to communicate openly and directly with customers, colleagues and suppliers and I would definitely encourage others in the industry to do the same – it might help to create a better sense of mutual understanding. Over recent weeks, the dominant theme of my posts has been the extraordinary efforts of suppliers like Mila to make sure that fabricators have the products they need to keep trade, retail and commercial customers happy. I don’t think any of us could realistically have expected the industry to bounce back from the lockdown quite so strongly as it has and, while that is brilliant, it has tested capacity at many points right across the supply chain. There are widespread reports now of stock outages on profile, glass and hardware, made worse I think by the fact that some companies simply pushed back too many orders and then kept staff on furlough for too long and aren’t now communicating properly with customers. By contrast, at Mila, we’re very much going above and beyond to make sure our customers can make the most of the opportunities which are currently out there and the general improvement in the market. Everyone here - from front line sales to supply chain is more

focused than ever on keeping our line OTIF (which indicates how many items we have in stock) as high as possible. I get our daily performance metrics delivered into my inbox at 6.30 am every morning and they’re the first thing I look at when I pick up my phone. At the time of writing, our line OTIF is sitting at 92.2% and it’s prominently displayed on our website for all to see. 92.2 is way down on where we would be in normal times when anything below 98% would trigger an investigation. But, judging by the number of enquiries we’re getting from fabricators who are being let down by their current supplier, it’s still much higher than many of our competitors. Mila has the huge advantage, of course, that we still have the resources available to be able to invest. We are currently spending tens of thousands of pounds on air freight to get more product onto our shelves as quickly as possible and we have weekly meetings to make sure we target that option as effectively as possible for those customers with the most urgent demand. We also maintained contract terms with all of our suppliers throughout, so they’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure that we’ve also got lots of stock on the way to us by sea which will be with us within weeks to ensure that normal service can be resumed. As you’d expect, we’re doing all we can to help everyone who contacts us, but we still assess every single order against stock levels and forecasted demand so that loyal Mila customers are never disadvantaged for the sake of a new enquiry. It’s clear that suppliers are already being judged by their customers on how they performed before, during and after the lockdown. I am determined that Mila will come out on the right side of that judgement. More info: www.mila.co.uk By Richard Gyde, Managing Director, Mila
As a result of these challenges, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) has announced the creation of a new marketing ‘sub-committee’ for its Building Hardware Group members. The new sub-committee will specifically address the issues and developments pertinent to the building hardware industry and comprises members with a marketing background from across the group. The 11-person-strong sub-committee met for the first time on August 5th and is headed up by Suzanne TaylorTurnbull, Head of Marketing and Marketing Development at Allegion, with the Vice-Chair named as Helena Liddiard from ASSA ABLOY. It is anticipated that meetings will be held regularly. “The sub-committee has been formed as a result of the many concerns currently facing the building hardware sector,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “There are topics a-plenty for the sub-committee to turn their attention to in these changing and testing times. Most importantly, it will ensure that these issues, and the steps that are being taken to address them, are communicated effectively and successfully to the relevant audience.” The creation of the new sub-committee is a further demonstration of DHF’s proactivity and commitment in meeting the needs of its (now more than) 450 members. With nearly all of the UK manufacturing companies forming the Building Hardware Group, they are in an ideal position to inform the market.

INCLUSIVE DOOR DESIGNS OPEN UP NEW SALES OPPORTUNITIES FOR FABRICATORS Eryl Jones, Managing Director of the ASSA ABLOY Door Hardware Group, outlines why it’s critical that door closers adhere to the policies governing inclusive design, while making clear how this can lead to greater sales opportunities for door fabricators. Evidence across the building industry suggests there is still a great deal of confusion and non-compliance surrounding the guidance governing inclusive design. This includes Approved Document M, the Equality Act 2010 and – crucially – BS 8300-1 and BS 8300-2: 2018, which sets out how buildings should be designed, constructed and maintained to create an accessible and inclusive environment for all. BS 8300 was most recently updated in 2018, with the emphasis for the standard shifting from offering an ‘accessible’ environment to one that is ‘inclusive’. Those with specific needs should have these accommodated within a general space, rather than set apart in a separate area. Essentially, all people should be able to access and use a building and its facilities easily, comfortably and independently, including being able to escape in the event of a fire or other emergency. Inclusive design aims to remove any barriers that might prevent an individual from using an environment freely. A range of market drivers are ensuring inclusive design is an approach that can no longer be ignored. Those over 65 account for a quarter of the population, and with one in seven projected to be aged over 75 by 2040, buildings need to be designed for an increasingly ageing population. Disabiltiy is another key market driver influencing the need for inclusive building designs; over 11 million people working in the UK have a limiting long-term illness, impairment or disability. Finally, inclusive designs can have a direct impact on the bottom line for businesses, with Disability Rights UK finding inaccessible premises are the key reason for those with a disability deciding against a purchase. The benefits of inclusive design for brands are numerous, too: improved customer loyalty, greater differentiation, enhanced credibility, stronger brand awareness and increased spending opportunities. There are many considerations that a door opening solution needs to take into account to be compliant with BS 8300-2:2018, for example, such as opening and closing forces. The standard states: ‘If the force required for opening doors is greater than wheelchair users and people with limited strength can manage, they will be unable to continue their journeys independently. If the force of closing device is too great or its speed too fast, there is a risk that people could be pushed off balance.’ Consequently, to enable independent access through a door, the opening force – when measured at the leading edge of the door – should be no greater than 30 N, when moving from the closed position to 30° open. Then, the
36
opening force required from 30° to 60° should be no more than 22.5 N. In terms of the maximum closing force exerted by a controlled door closing device, this should be within 0° and 15° of final closure. Fabricators should avoid products that do not offer this capability. Other factors to take into account include accessibility for wheelchair users, effective clear widths, door fittings and visual considerations. Solutions that are compliant with BS 83002:2018 will satisfy all these needs. In summary, inclusive design is a key objective for most modern building environments today. Yet organisations from across the supply chain are still failing to fully understand the benefits to be gained from meeting these requirements. But with inclusive design now a top priority for many, the fabricator market is in a unique position to generate new sales opportunities with door and hardware solutions that can meet these demands, as well as educating their customers on why it is so important that door hardware meets these needs. To demystify what the guidelines governing inclusive design state, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland has published a new white paper that goes into this topic in-depth. This can be downloaded at www.assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk/inclusivedesign. Bob Perry, CEO of the Door Hardware Federation (DHF), adds: “It’s really good to see such an important message being highlighted in this white paper. Our society is changing – both in its demographics and its attitudes – and it is clear that any company that fails on inclusivity will be left behind. At the same time, however, the requirements around inclusive design are somewhat opaque and there is still much confusion in the industry. “What this white paper from ASSA ABLOY does is present everything the industry needs to know about the issue. It outlines the relevant standards, explains what they really mean, and tells them exactly what they need to do to make sure their door hardware is compliant. On behalf of the DHF, I recommend that it is essential reading.” The latest door closers that are compliant with the policies governing inclusive design balance safety, security and accessibility for all users, and are available in slim profiles that are ideally suited for fabricators manufacturing slim aluminium profile sections. Ultimately, fabricators can help play an important role in delivering inclusive environments, while realising new sales opportunities in the process too. TELLING IT HOW IT IS
– STERNFENSTER’S MIKE PARCZUK Sternfenster’s Mike Parczuk has been quite vocal as the industry suffers from a rash of pre-packs. Can they ever be a good thing? Do they retain jobs or are they a ‘get out of jail’ card for companies with poor governance? Can we, as an industry do anything about it or is it indicative of a level of dishonesty when companies talk about the number of frames made per week? Mike discusses the issue of ‘value’ and how that applies throughout the supply chain.

BUILDERS MERCHANT BUILDING INDEX
BUILDERS’ MERCHANTS’ Q2 SALES: A TALE OF RESILIENCE AND RECOVERY Emile van der Ryst, Senior Client Insight Manager at GfK comments: “At the end of Q1 the sector was down by -6.7% in value, with Q2 down by -38.6%. Individually, April, May and June couldn’t have been more different. April, with almost a full lockdown, saw a year on year decline of -76.5% as most merchants only provided essential deliveries to active trade account holders. May recovered to -39.9% as restrictions were relaxed, while June grew 2.2% thanks to a combination of relaxed restrictions, good weather and a booming Landscaping category. “Landscaping surged with June to June growth of 50.3%, while the other core categories of Heavy Building Materials and Timber & Joinery saw increases of 0.2% and 1.4% respectively. Landscaping growth was driven by Garden Walling / Paving, Fencing & Gates, and Decking, which more than doubled in value from June to June. “Year to date Heavy Building Materials and Timber & Joinery decreased -23.9% and -25.9% respectively against 2019. The former’s June recovery was driven by strong Cement, Aggregates and Roofing performance, while the latter had a strong Timber performance in June. All of this provides a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the year.” John Newcomb, CEO of the Builders Merchant Federation says: “The initial impact of Covid-19 was industry-wide, with figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and the Construction Products Association (CPA) reflecting the experience at merchant counters during the last quarter. “The ONS reported a record 35.0% fall in construction output in Q2 compared to Q1 2020. Private housing was the largest contributor in new work (down 51.2% on the previous quarter), with private housing RMI (down 46.5%) the largest contributor in repair and maintenance. These two sectors form the mainstay of merchants’ business and

MASTERFRAME CHANGES COURSE WITH THREE NEW WEBSITES Masterframe, the sash window specialist has launched the first of three new websites, bringing their online image right up to date with a crisp and clean lead generation site with user friendly navigation. The new retail facing website at www.masterframe.co.uk signals a change in strategy for the company, with all their product offerings brought together under the well-established Masterframe brand. Carol Slade Managing Director says “We have engaged the services of experts to create a user friendly, lead generation site that promotes all our products, whilst primarily showcasing our Bygone Collection to retail customers. Bygone sash windows are only available through a network of Master Installers that have been handpicked for their expertise and customer service ethic and they are promoted throughout the new site with a bold new logo. Key trade customers are also featured on the site. Carol continues “Consumers can now see all of their sash window options through one ‘shop window’ and choose from the popular Classic Collection or the most exclusive Bygone Collection. To make this a popular digital destination we are planning a significant marketing campaign to drive them to the site. To inspire customers and to enhance their user experience, we have also invested in a number of virtual showroom videos. These have been added to the individual Master Installer pages with our own showrooms also featuring on the site. The videos have all got added hot spots that explain finer
details of our quality products that often go unnoticed.” The new site also features dedicated new sections for Masterframe’s exclusive offerings such as the London Sash & Frame design and Timberweld®, the patented method of creating perfectly sealed wood effect corners. The new Pricemaster Window Configurator featured on the site allows customers to design and request a quick quotation from their nearest Master Installer. Now that the first site is live, Masterframe have no intention of slowing down their marketing activity and will soon launch a trade focussed website. This site will be designed as a helpful tool and information hub for trade customers, architects, specifiers and commercial customers. Full details of the Classic Collection will be included along with specifications, visuals, useful resources, new video content and other more technical information. The third site, the last to launch will be an educational site brimming with information on sash windows and other interesting topics. Carol Slade sums up the purpose of the site by saying “The site will be our chance to give back to the greater market by sharing our experience and expertise on sash windows and we will also invite other experts, in related industries to share their vision and knowledge. We expect the site to build over time as we add more and more relevant content”. PROFILE 22 OPTIMA WINDOWS FITTED IN HIGH SPECIFICATION HOUSING DEVELOPMENT Over 300 Optima windows from Profile 22 have been installed in a private housing development in Chipping near Preston in Lancashire. The project specified flush casement windows in 7016 anthracite on white, which would provide a classic heritage appearance and would be perfect for the development’s village setting. The windows needed to have a U value of 1.4 W/m²K for thermal efficiency and meet PAS24:2016 and Secured by Design requirements so they would exceed the security standards of Document Q of Building Regulations. Sonia Travis, Head of Commercial Sales at Profile 22, was able to offer valuable input on the window specification. “I could see that the larger windows would need to use our Flush Tilt & Turn Window with an astragal bar to give the aesthetics required and ensure the project met both
40
PAS24:2016 requirements and complied with Document Q of Building Regulations. This was accepted by the developer”. The fabrication and installation contract was carried out by Profile 22 Approved Contractor Kingfisher Windows, a leading manufacturer and supplier of windows, doors and conservatories. As an experienced contractor, Kingfisher Windows is used to working with new build developers and on projects involving tight timescales on busy construction sites. It meant that the windows were fabricated and installed smoothly and efficiently. With the homes now complete, Chipping has a sensitively designed, high-quality small housing development that brings much-needed homes to the local area. Jonny Reynolds of Kingfisher Windows commented: “The development is in keeping with the local surroundings without compromising on thermal efficiency or security. We are very pleased with the results.” Tel: 0808 101 4143 - www.profile22.co.uk

GLAZERITE: WHAT’S NEXT FOR DOORS? Glazerite’s Group Marketing Manager, Michelle Wright, looks at buying influences and opportunities in the door replacement market. For most of us, 2020 will be remembered as the year of staying home. All the extra time on our hands spent within our own four walls has reportedly seen a third of us attempt DIY lockdown projects. Fortunately for the fenestration industry, it’s also meant homeowners have been exploring ways to improve the exterior of their houses too, a job that is definitely best left to the experts. Another potential stimulus is the Government’s Green Homes Scheme, which has highlighted the installation of energy efficient doors as part of a raft of secondary measures to follow primary areas like wall and roof insulation. As nearly a fifth of UK greenhouse gas emissions result from heating buildings, fitting energy efficient doors is likely to be on the agenda for some time to come as policy makers strive
42
robust portfolio of leading brand, high performing doors from the likes of Doorco, Solidor and Palladio. Composite doors are low in U-value and high in thermal performance, helping customers lose less energy and ultimately cut down on utility bills. Advances in smart technology also generates
Michelle Wright, Group Marketing Manager, Glazerite
to reach net zero carbon emission by 2050. Energy efficiency and the subsequent reduction in fuel bills is already a driver for some door purchases, while other homeowners will be seeking out the reassurance of security measures, or how doors can make use of exciting developments in smart technology. For most though, any functionality will need to be balanced by kerb appeal – with front door aesthetics creating the ultimate first impression of our homes. Composite doors, with their thermally-efficient cores, are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners thanks to their balance of style, security and energy efficiency. As a leading fabricator, we support our installer partners with a
some interest amongst the tech-savvy homeowner. The high performance Avantis multipoint locking system is now standard on all our doors. A simple upgrade transforms it into a Kubu door, giving the homeowner the ability to monitor their locks in real time. Glazerite installers also have access
to the innovative Ultion Smart lock, which allows homeowners locking functionality via their smart phone. When it comes to colour choice, grey doors, like windows, are still a firm favourite, with around one third of the doors we supply in the shade. However we have seen an increase in demand for much bolder colour choices and contemporary door styles after lockdown. We’ve also just extended the glass range, giving even more choice for homeowners to personalise their door. Doorco, which offers a fantastic range of colours, has recently introduced a stunning light pink shade across four of its door designs, as part of a fundraising initiative for the charity We Mind & Kelly Matters. Set up by our Chairman, John Hewitt, in memory of his late daughter, Doorco will kindly donate 20 percent of sales on all of its pink door blanks to the charity, so it’s certainly a shade we hope will mirror grey in popularity over the coming months. Although the front door is generally the first thing that springs to mind for home improvements, the breadth of Glazerite’s door range has many benefits for our installers and their
customers. Patio doors are one of our strongest growth products, partly driven by their great sightlines and ease of use. We’ve seen an increased demand for Bi-folds over the last couple of months in particular, purchases possibly spurred on by homeowners who have been spending so much more time at home of late! In addition to energy efficiency and aesthetics, security is also a necessity no homeowner can ignore, and for that reason all Glazerite doors are manufactured with the Ultion diamond secure lock as standard, giving homeowners added reassurance and our installers another great selling point. For the finishing touches to any door, the aesthetic and reliable Fab&Fix hardware is available as standard, or homeowners have the option to upgrade to Sweet, which includes the recently launched, on-trend Rose Gold colour. Whatever the homeowner is looking for, be it thermal efficiency, security, choice, innovation or aesthetics, we’re confident the Glazerite door portfolio will continue to offer the breadth and depth they want and that our installers expect from their fabricator.

UK DOORS ONLINE LAUNCHES WITH HELP FROM THE CONSULTANCY For a new business branded ‘UK Doors Online’, the critical factor in its success is obviously going to be the appeal and functionality of its website and online ordering function.
UK Doors Online came to The Consultancy with a distinctive creative identity and asked the team to interpret this online. The
finished result successfully uses the repeated circles which feature in the UK Doors Online new logo in a range of different ways
which add instant impact. Probably the most important feature though is the online door designer function integrated into the website, which had to give users all the functionality they are used to from other sites, but in a way which feels fresh and new. Andrew Glover explained why he chose The Consultancy for the project: “We’re benchmarking our website and our online presence against the biggest names in the industry, so we knew that we needed to work with the very best in order to achieve that. The Consultancy has an incredible track record on doors designers, and we were confident that could rely on them to give us a site which looks great but works even better.
That’s why Managing Director of UK Doors Online, Andrew Glover, chose the industry’s leading website provider to create the company’s all-important web presence. Hartlepool based The Consultancy, part of the Business Micros Group, has just delivered the new website at: www.ukdoorsonline.co.uk to help launch the business and start to generate leads.
“They created the website in just four weeks which was really impressive and, crucially for our target installer market, made sure it works just as well on mobiles and tablets as it does on desktops.”
From its factory in Wakefield, UK Doors Online is fabricating aluminium bi-folds and lift and slide patio doors on a fiveday turnaround, with market leading warranties and security specifications. Aluminium entrance doors and roller garage doors complete the product lineup. The company’s focus is on winning business via a mix of guaranteed quality and value, backed up by short lead times, instant ordering options and outstanding customer service, and the website had to communicate this.
Richie Thornton, Project Director at The Consultancy, added: “Visitors don’t stay on a site if it isn’t instantly appealing and also easy to navigate. What we showed here is how well we can interpret a brief and create something which is distinctive yet also reassuringly familiar.” More details at: www.theconsultancy.co.uk

SECURING MORE ALUMINIUM ENDURANCE LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE PLATFORM BIFOLD DOOR SALES WITH FENTRADE Trade fabricator Fentrade Aluminium Building Products has reported a significant increase in demand for their aluminium bifold doors post lockdown. Chris Reeks, Director of Fentrade said: “The increase in demand has come from retail installers and trade counters alike as a direct result of consumers looking to improve their homes over the lockdown period.” The Newport-based fabricator manufactures the Aluk BSF70 bifold door which offers an intelligent combination of form and function with open-in or open-out door options, available in a range of single or dual colours and anodised finishes. Chris said: “We are finding the most popular colour options are grey and white, but we also offer a full range of RAL and Non-RAL colours for installers to upsell into the consumer.”
Furniture colours are suited across the range of Fentrade’s products for added aesthetics, with an option for anthracite grey handles and hardware too. Fentrade also fits VBH Greenteq Clearspan hardware to their doors with rollers that accommodate greater sash weights and allows the production of sashes up to 1200mm in size which is perfect for wide apertures. Furthermore, the fitter-friendly door rollers can easily be adjusted on site, which is an added benefit to installers. Customers of Fentrade can choose to upgrade to the VBH Q-Secure homeowner security guarantee scheme. If entry is shown to be as a direct result of the hardware failing, VBH will pay up to £1000 towards the cost of repair/replacing the door, up to £1000 towards insurance excess payment and a goodwill payment of £1000 to the homeowner. Chris said: “This added level of protection gives homeowners peace of mind when it comes to home security and is another selling point to help installers close the sale too.”
Having invested considerably in marketing since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to help support Installer Partners, Endurance Doors have now launched a new generation website platform, that’s designed to bring in more homeowner leads than ever before, along with a new trade portal. The new website at https://endurancedoors. co.uk has been developed with their digital marketing partners, ICAAL, and from an SEO perspective this new platform appears in the top five organic rankings for Google for over fifty search terms and number one for fourteen of them. The new functionality of the site should also improve these statistics further.
The Quick Quote function has been an important new feature, designed to help consumers through the process of designing a door and getting an estimated price in just three easy steps. In Quick Quote there are the options of sidelights, toplights and even double (French) doors, twelve of the most popular door designs and finally a Postcode request, which goes out to local Installer Partners. Several case studies have also been added
to the home page, which is a note of reassurance to consumers that an Endurance door is the best investment for their home.
Scott Foster, Head of Group Sales and Marketing commented: ‘The new website platform is a work-in-progress as we are now constantly evolving it to give consumers and the trade, the very best possible consumer experience. To stand still in marketing in my view is to go backwards and we’re now investing more than ever before in our brand deliverables, as it drives more sales for us and our Installer partners.’ He continued: ‘There’s also a new Fingerprint Portal, that allows our partners to personalise brochures and point of sale materials, so they can benefit from our strong brand and theirs collectively.’ For further information on the Endurance Solid and Secure composite door range and a free marketing pack, please call the sales office on 01652 659259, visit the new website at https://endurancedoors.co.uk, or e-mail marketing@endurancedoors.co.uk. You can also add to the Twitter following @EnduranceDoors.
As with all Fentrade products, there’s a reliable turnaround from order to delivery, including a quotation within 24 hours of enquiry. The award-winning trade fabricator also offers regular deliveries across Wales, the West and into the Midlands and is a member of the Council for Aluminium in Building. Fentrade pride themselves on offering their customers the right products and support to maximise market opportunities and with the increase in demand for aluminium bifold doors, it looks as if they have got their strategy right. WHICH DOOR?
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
A PERFECT MATCH WITH FORCE 8 Colour is now one of the largest selling points in the window and door market, and a great deal of this is focused on the door sector with an ever expanding range of styles and colours and matching frames. But this can easily turn into a nightmare for the installer, says window and door fabricator Force 8. According to the company, getting the perfect match between a coloured door and frame when dealing with different manufacturers can be hit and miss. Using the right paint code does not always guarantee a good match, the only way to be sure is to spray the door and frame at the same time. There is a great deal of related factors in a perfect colour match apart from the paint: the temperature, environment and drying
time can have an effect on the outcome. At Force 8 the door and frame are sprayed at the same time and allowed to dry together in the same conditions. The last thing an installer needs is for the customer to complain that the frame colour is slightly out with the door; so what do you do? Replace door or the whole installation? Even then you could just repeat the issue. “Force 8 are in the unique position of manufacturing composite doors and also fabricating frames, adding our own paint facility was the only answer for us to create a fool-proof colour match every time”, comments Dennis Sumner, managing director at Force 8. “We identified at an early stage using different paint facilities and systems cause issues, as we had faced the same problems with the frame colour being slightly out on occasions when we
CONSERVATORY OUTLET EXPANDS
SOLID CORE DOOR RANGE
Market-leading fabricator, Conservatory Outlet Ltd, has this week announced plans to further expand its already extensive Extreme Solid Core Door Collection. The exclusive door range, which was first launched to Conservatory Outlet’s UKwide network of retailers in July 2019, will see five brand new contemporary door designs added to the collection from October 1st, together with a further five sleek, aluminium-look colour options. Designed to appeal to homeowners seeking a more urban style, each of the new door designs has been tailor-made to feature stripped-back, minimalist appeal. With each new door offering a different take on contemporary design, the expanded range is perfectly positioned to tackle the growing demand for modern composite doors. The focus on contemporary styling comes at no expense of security, though, as each of the new door designs is set to feature the same unique 48mm laminated timber core that characterises the range. The unique ‘Auto-Engage’ locking system, featured as standard across the range will also be included in the new designs. In addition to the new designs and colours comes a further expansion of the collection’s contemporary glazing choices. Customisable Etch Art glazing options will allow the homeowner to personalise their glazing with house number/name details for the modern edge. Non-glazed options are also available in the new designs for added privacy.
www.glassnews.co.uk | September 2020
Andy Miller, Business Development Director at Conservatory Outlet, explains: “When we first unveiled the Extreme Solid Core Door collection, we’d always planned to continually update and add to the collection as trends in the market changed. “A tremendous amount of work has gone on behind the scenes to ensure we offered only the best contemporary door designs that compliment modern architecture. The roll-out to our network of retailers will begin in October and will feature improved retail brochures, superb quality colour swatch folders, expanded digital assets and additional sales training. “If the initial Extreme Solid Core Door launch is anything to go by, we’re expecting these new contemporary door styles to prove to be a huge success, we’re all incredibly excited to see what the rest of 2020 brings.”
out-sourced. This made it an easy decision for us to invest in our own paint spraying facility and colour our own doors and frames. “More of our customers are requesting coloured doors and matching frames, and without our in house system this would only raise the percentage of miss matched colour frames or doors. As far as we are aware, Force 8 is the only company in the UK providing this facility, which guarantees a perfect colour match every time, and peace of mind for any installer”. Having this facility has enabled Force 8 to also create a unique range of two tone coloured doors, as well as formulate a heat resistant paint which adds to the prevention of bowing in composite doors. ROOFING
ROOFING AND ROOFLINE,
THE WINNING FORMULA
Freefoam Building Products announce the launch of a new video. Working with award winning roofing company J R Roofing the short film highlights the benefits of fitting Freefoam roofline products alongside roof systems. Filmed on location in Blackpool, with Josh Morrison and his team completing the replacement roof on an attractive Edwardian end of terrace property in a rural location. Josh explains how offering roofline as part of a roofing contract brings extra revenue and increased customer satisfaction. Freefoam have increasingly seen roofing companies join the Registered Installer Scheme and wanted to illustrate how the PVC product range complimented the range and services offered by roofing companies. J R Roofing were the obvious choice for this film. Having recently been awarded the prestigious Which Trusted trader accreditation Josh has been in the roofing business since he was 14! Whilst roofline replacement, namely fascia, soffit and gutter, has been seen as a niche of the home improvement sector, often installed by roofline specialists or as part of general PVC home improvements like windows and doors, other trades are now seeing the opportunities it can bring. JR Roofing have always offered roofline as part of our general roofing package. Josh worked closely with a joiner when he first started roofing and was taught how to fit roofline. He explained “It’s allowed us to offer our customers the full range of services and certainly puts us ahead of our competitors. We often do a roof survey and see that the fascia or guttering also needs replacing. It’s much more cost effective for our customers to have all elements replaced at once and makes sure their home is fully weatherproof and low maintenance for many years to come. ” The Registered Installer Scheme is part of Freefoam’s comprehensive support package for all home improvement companies. Support on offer goes beyond great products and guarantees to help customers grow, with a comprehensive range of marketing packages, Point of Sale, consumer focused brochures and samples to help installers sell more and build their own brands. Freefoam registered installers also benefit from consumer-facing websites myfascia. co.uk and mycladding.com which generate quality pre-qualified leads send direct to the network of registered installers. Louise Sanderson, Freefoam UK Marketing Manager summarised “Our product range is suitable for all sections of the home improvement market. It’s great to be working with companies like JR Roofing who are capitalising on the benefits roofline can bring. With a huge potential audience on social media we find short, punchy testimonial style videos like this work well for us, attracting new enquiries and building brand awareness.” VIEW VIDEO HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG6b2uuQYqY

DEMAND FOR TUFFX ROOFLIGHTS REMAINS HIGH Toughened glass specialist TuffX is delighted to report a recent surge in orders for its flat and walk-on rooflight products, revealing that lockdown has had no negative impact on customer demand for its contemporary high-end products. Since Tuffx’s launch of its rooflights range – now branded Infinity – at the end of 2018, there has been a steady and on-going increase in demand for both its flat and walk-on versions. This upward trend has continued throughout 2020 despite the challenges and disruptions the year has brought.
TuffX’s Infinity rooflights are designed to increase the flow of natural light into the home and offer an effective modern alternative to roof lanterns when forming part of an orangery or full rear extension, or for basement conversions and roof terraces. The range has proved increasingly popular with homeowners as well as builders and installers, thanks to its sleek, contemporary yet lowmaintenance aluminium finish, along with a hassle-free ‘drop and bolt’ installation that requires no additional assembly on site. “As people are spending more time in their homes they’re approaching builders
and window installers with a view to making discerning home improvements with money they’ve saved from unfortunately cancelled holidays and activities,” said TuffX’s Managing Director Graham Price. “We’re seeing increased interest and enquiries for our rooflights, which are available in a range of glass finishes and glazed into a powder-coated aluminium frame as a complete unit. With our rooflights installers can add a simple, easy-to-fit yet high-value contemporary product to their portfolio of customer offerings, which we can deliver directly to site throughout the UK. “We’re delighted that after 25 years at the top of the trade we continue to be a strong reliable supplier offering products our customers want even under the challenging current economic circumstances.”

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
ARE YOU MISSING OUT ON THE BALUSTRADE BOOM? Paul Smith, Marketing Manager of F.H. Brundle, asks whether installers are missing a trick in not offering one of the fastest-growing home improvement products – balustrades. Of the thousands of installers at work up and down the country, the majority are specialists – they do windows, doors, and maybe conservatories.
But in focusing their attention on just those three core fenestration products, are they actually missing out on big opportunities a little outside that comfort zone?
Homeowners, architects and product designers have striven to introduce as much transparent space to houses and gardens as possible.
A FAST-GROWING TREND
That fuelled the incredible rise of bi-folds, for instance – and more recently, has seen a surge in the popularity of wide-span sliding doors, that can make virtually a whole wall see-through.
Let’s take glass balustrades as an example. They’re one of the fastest-growing glazing products in Europe, offering high-margins, stylish aesthetics and a sure-fire way of appealing to discerning and aspirational homeowners. Really, they’re just a natural evolution of the trends we’ve been seeing in architecture and interior design since the early 2000s.
Now, glass balustrades are taking things a step further – by turning barriers that have traditionally often been opaque, like balconies and banisters, into ones that are transparent.
LIGHTER, BRIGHTER HOMES – AND EASIER INSTALLATIONS It’s an extremely effective way of bringing more light, a greater sense of spaciousness, and minimalistic style to a property – which goes a long way to explaining why the demand for them has risen considerably over the last decade. But from an installer’s perspective, the best thing about them is if you can already fit something as complicated as a bifold or even a conservatory, then you can easily turn your hand to glass balustrades. There are rules and regulations you’ll need to know to follow, but once you’ve grasped those, you’re good to go. And at F.H. Brundle, we’ve got an extensive range of quality, installer-friendly glass balustrade products to help you quickly get started in this lucrative, growing market.
BEST-IN-CLASS BALUSTRADES Take the Slim Channel for example – a great value system that’s quick and easy to install thanks to its pre-drilled channel fixing holes, and offers a satin anodised finish. What’s more, stainless steel cladding isn’t required. Then there’s PanelGrip, with its patented expanded grip technology which allows for significantly reduced installation times and labour costs. The only tool you’ll need to align the glass is an Allen key! But whichever model you choose, customising one to fit you and your customers’ requirements is a breeze thanks to the F.H. Brundle Liveconfigurator™ online configuration tool. It will save you hours of drawing time and costly mistakes – and best of all, you get a set of CAD drawings totally free. PYROGUARD PROTECT TICKS ALL OF THE BOXES FOR
NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART ICE RINK
Manufactured to a bespoke specification, Pyroguard’s range of toughened fire safety glass, Pyroguard Protect, was recently installed inside the new Angers ICEPARC in Angers, France.
environment, prioritising fire safety from the offset was crucial to ensure that staff and visitors have an adequate means of escape in the event of a fire. However, as an architecturally ambitious project, fire safety glass that complied with building regulations, without compromising on quality and design, was essential to uphold the attractive and futuristic vision of the building.
For the ambitious architectural project, where safety and design were key, Pyroguard T-EI60/25-3 provided 60 minutes of integrity and heat insulation, as well as 1B1 impact classification, UV stability and strong acoustic performance for the curved interior glass partition.
Ouest Serrurerie was appointed to design and install the fire safety glazing system in the viewing platform areas, which overlooks the recreational ice rink from above. In line with the design objectives of the project, a series of full length glass windows that curved off into a geometric point was proposed to follow the shape of the ice rink. Indeed, Ouest Serrurerie needed custom sized glass panes, as well as framing, in order to achieve this.
Located near the banks of the River Maine in the Saint-Serge district of Angers, France, Angers ICEPARC is the new state-of-the-art go-to destination for ice sports. Elegantly designed by CHABANNE Architecture, the new facility boasts two ice rinks. The main rink is the home stadium for local ice hockey team, Les Ducs d’Angers, and is also used for activities such as ice karting and ice skating lessons. The second recreational rink is open to the general public. Contemporary and captivating, the building is designed with a curved structure, which is also reflected through the interior elements. Working closely with the Pyroguard technical team, Pyroguard T-EI60 from the Pyroguard Protect range, was chosen for its ability to be custom manufactured to suit the individual project’s needs. The Pyroguard toughened fire safety
glass provides 60 minutes of protection against flames and smoke and enables the transmission of natural light, acoustic control and thermal and solar performance, while losing no aesthetic benefits and maintaining the highest standards of safety. The bespoke fire safety glass panes were inserted into Forster steel frames, chosen by Ouest Serrurerie, thanks to Pyroguard’s proven and extensive fire testing evidence in Forster profiles. In addition, a project assessment was executed to justify the conformity of Pyroguard T-EI60 with regards to its fire safety performance, in relation to this specific project. With the support of EFECTIS, the teams were able to ensure that the final solution warranted the most suitable and efficient level of fire protection. Speaking of the project, Julien Bretaudeau, Technician at Ouest Serrurerie, said: “Due to the complexity of the design, we required a very bespoke glazing solution that would fit into the Forster steel frames. We collaborated with the technical teams at Forster and at Pyroguard, where we held several meetings to discuss the constraints
and solutions. It was a pleasure to work with the team at Pyroguard, who understood our vision and were very helpful, efficient and professional. Using Pyroguard T, the company were able to manufacture the fire safety glass to our specification and provide a totally bespoke system for the fire resistance required.” Mr Dangnoise, Director at Ouest Serrurerie, concluded: “Pyroguard provided the product with good lead times and was able to support us throughout the entire installation. The Angers ICEPARC project has proved that making buildings safe does not have to come at the cost of an aesthetically pleasing design, while the performance of Pyroguard Protect gives the best protection for people and property.” For more information about Pyroguard Protect please visithttps://bit.ly/3jVGIsX

GLASS NEWS INTERVIEW: FENSA
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
WATCH CHRIS BEEDEL’S DEFENCE AGAINST CRITICISM OF FENSA AND HIS THOUGHTS ON THE GREEN HOMES GRANT AND THE ORGANISATION’S ROLE, GOING FORWARD FENSA has come in for some stick from some quarters. Has it taken a leading role in keeping their members well informed during the Covid crisis? Should they have done more? Indeed, just what have they done during this lockdown period and as we emerge into the recovery stage?
Catching up with Chris Beedel, FENSA’s Director of Membership, Glass News’ Editor Chris Champion had the opportunity to put a variety of questions to Chris and he, in turn, vehemently defends FENSA and puts the record straight. Beedel, having been at FENSA for some three years, is asked about his background prior to joining and whether it was good timing, or not, bearing in mind the changes in the organisation over that time and the obstacles that they have been forced to face. He also talks about the Green Homes Grant scheme and the issues around implementing what many would say is a flawed scheme for both homeowners and installers. And where does it go from here and how will the
success, or otherwise, be monitored? There’s lots to be done and the money spent in this financial year, as Chris points out. And has FENSA now become more than a membership and certification organisation? He is also asked about the lockdown and how FENSA’s member installers reacted, what they have done during this time and what it means to their businesses as trading starts again. Now, with businesses back to work, what is FENSA doing to aid members and what are FENSA’s aims for the future? Watch Chris Beedel’s interview and find out the answers to these important questions.

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THIS MONTH: Debbie Morley, Euroglaze If you’re a Euroglaze customer, you won’t know Debbie Morley, but you’ll be very familiar with her work. She’s the company’s product checker extraordinaire, the person who has the final say on whether the Rehau windows leaving the Euroglaze factory pass the ultimate quality test.
health and beauty magazine – just about as far removed from doors and windows as you can get.
Someone or something that inspires you… It would definitely be Nicky Park, the Customer Service Administrator here at Euroglaze. She’s an absolute gem and the heart and soul of all the charity fundraising we do. She’s shown me just how much you can achieve by motivating and encouraging the people around you and, above all, never giving up. I loved the virtual John O’Groats to Land’s End bike ride we did here last year in aid of Retina UK - and not just because I was on the winning team.
The temptation you can’t resist… It would have to be a large G&T with ice – I can count the slice
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU... Where were you born, and which part of the country do you currently live? Like lots of us here, I’m Barnsley born and bred.
Your education and the subject or activity in which you excelled… I went to the local school in Barnsley. While I was there, I loved art and ceramics and my teachers told me I had some real potential.
Your favourite sports or interests… I love motorbikes and especially Moto GP. In fact, I’m planning to get my own bike and take the CBT as soon as I can. Since moving into a house recently where the garden hadn’t been touched for two years though, gardening has become my latest passion. If lockdown was good for anything, it was definitely good for my lawn!
Your biggest regret in life… Following on from school, it would probably be that I didn’t get the encouragement I needed to go to art college. A friend of mine who did go is now a designer on a
of lemon as one of my five a day, can’t I?
YOUR CAREER... When and how you joined this industry… I’ve only been in the industry for a couple of years – prior to that I spent many years in retail, clocking up the customer service awards at Tesco. What I learnt at Tesco is that ‘every little really does help’. Quality, value, attention to detail and incremental improvements are very much the Euroglaze way as well, so I definitely feel very at home here.
The job you do in 25 words…
I check every element of every single window before it leaves the factory – if anything is less than 100% perfect, it’s rejected before it ever reaches the customer.
Your greatest achievement… I was made a factory ‘champion’ at Euroglaze within a few months of joining which I think was recognition of the fact that, as the only woman on the shopfloor, I’d won people’s respect. That was a great feeling.
AND YOUR FUTURE... What you would like to do if you weren’t in this industry… As a quality controller, I love working in a business where quality is the number one priority so I really can’t imagine working anywhere else now. But, if I wasn’t here, I think I’d go back to college and study for a while.
A particular ambition… Like everyone here at Euroglaze, I’ve become more than a little obsessed with our quality performance. I’m always aiming for that 100% error free month where not one single item is rejected. I might be out of a job though, so perhaps I shouldn’t wish too hard for that one.
The way you want to be remembered… As someone who was happy and positive and a great team player. www.euroglaze.co.uk

GREEN HOMES GRANT
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
THE GREEN HOMES GRANT WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT – BUT AT LEAST WE’VE FINALLY GOT SOME CLARITY Andy Jones, Group Managing Director of Victorian Sliders, comments on the latest details about the government’s Green Homes Grant. After a frustrating few weeks, the government has finally confirmed the details of its Green Homes Grant. First announced back in July, the multibillionpound scheme was billed as a way of boosting the UK economy in the wake of coronavirus, and accelerating attempts to reach the country’s ambitious 2050 carbon reduction targets. We were told that homeowners were to be offered vouchers worth up to £5,000 to cover two-thirds of the cost for home improvements that increase energy efficiency. It sounded promising in theory - but, crucially, we weren’t told what products would be eligible. For the fenestration industry, that was a big problem. Customers started cancelling orders in the belief that they’d be able to get them significantly cheaper once the initiative began. Our sector had come out of lockdown to find extremely high demand for windows and doors - but many feared this was now under threat.
REPLACING SINGLE GLAZING ONLY Weeks later, we’ve finally got some clarity about the scheme, and what it means for fenestration. In my view – and the view of a lot of people I’ve spoken to in the industry – it’s a real disappointment. Homeowners can only claim the vouchers if they want to install insulation, ground or air-source heat pumps, or solar panels. If they use them to pay for one of the above, they can also use them for glass and glazing products – but only to replace single-glazed windows with double, triple or secondary glazing, or install energy efficient doors. Given that around 90% of the UK’s windows are now thought to be doubleglazed already, that drastically limits the amount of work British glazing businesses and their suppliers will get out of the scheme.
Andy Jones, Group Managing Director, Victorian Sliders
It’s also worth noting that of the windows that aren’t currently double-glazed, many can’t be replaced, because they’re found in listed buildings. For sash window manufacturers like Victorian Sliders, the scheme may prove more positive – I’m willing to bet that there are more singleglazed sash windows still in use in the UK than casements. For the sector as a whole, however, the impact will likely be minimal.
BACK TO BUSINESS But at least we know now exactly what the Green Homes Grant scheme entails. It’s likely that the vast majority of projects put on hold before the full details were announced weren’t replacing single glazing, which means that most if not all can be resumed.
GREEN HOMES DEAL OFFERS LITTLE FOR WINDOW INSTALLERS, SAYS FENSA As the Government releases further information regarding the Green Homes Grant initiative a month after the headline announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, installers who experienced hundreds of cancelled orders have now been joined in their disappointment by homeowners learning that they will not, after all, have their replacement doors and windows heavily subsidised when the scheme launches in September.
number of window and door installers reporting cancellations of signed orders as homeowners interpreted the announcement as providing large subsidies for the windows and doors that they had ordered, if they waited for two months when the scheme was set to begin.
Although there was no specific mention that ‘double-glazing’ would be included in the initial announcement made to MPs in the House of Commons on 8th July, there was immediate speculation that the energy efficiency grants would include replacement windows. This resulted in a
However, it was the nature of the announcement of the Green Homes Grant scheme that has caused the greatest frustration, says Beedel: “The nature of the announcement of Green Homes resulted in widespread speculation amongst homeowners that they would be broadly entitled to substantial discounts, which resulted in the inevitable and highly damaging cancellation of hundreds of orders. This had the reverse effect of stimulating business and creating jobs, and damaged window installation companies throughout England and Wales.
The critical thing now is letting the public know the full details of the scheme. The government’s communications on this have been vague and unhelpful so far, so it’s probably down to us to tell them that most of the products they want installed won’t be eligible.
“Frustratingly, the Green Homes Grant scheme will be seen as a missed opportunity by everyone across the glazing industry,” says Chris Beedel, Director of Membership for FENSA. “FENSA will continue to engage with BEIS [Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy] to ensure that Government sees the positive contribution that replacement windows and doors can make to the energy efficiency of homes in the UK.”
“Furthermore,” said Beedel, “even the relatively few homes to which the Green Homes window and door grants will now apply, can only be installed by companies who have additionally been certificated against the PAS2030 standard, when the opportunity should have gone to all FENSA Approved Installers and other government sponsored competent persons schemes.”
In the medium to long term, it’s possible that the initiative might have some positive effects for fenestration. The focus on the importance of sustainability may persuade homeowners to invest in energy efficient window and door products. But let’s hope that now, with uncertainty about the grant scheme over, we can get back to what’s been one of the most buoyant periods we’ve experienced in decades. For more information visit www.victoriansliders.co.uk or call 01269 846200. Chris Beedel, Director of Membership for FENSA
58
Now that further details of the Green Homes Grant scheme have been released, it has become clear that only single glazed windows will qualify for replacement, with the emphasis now clearly placed upon insulation and other energy efficiency measures. The latest statement by the government does refer to replacing doors, but the details of this remain unclear.
Chris Beedel concluded: “We firmly believe the glazing industry has a major role to play in hitting energy efficiency targets and FENSA will continue to engage with BEIS to ensure that Government sees the positive contribution that replacement windows and doors can make to the energy efficiency of homes in the UK.”

GREEN HOMES GRANT
The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper
GREEN HOMES GRANT STILL PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR SAVVY INSTALLERS Recent clarification on the Green Homes Grant, including news that it can only be used to replace single glazing (and even then only as a secondary measure), has been met with both joy and disappointment. Joy because it puts a stop to homeowners cancelling live jobs in the hope of receiving a grant. Disappointment because it makes most replacement glazing projects ineligible. But respected sash window and secondary glazing manufacturer Roseview Windows points out that, while the scheme may be limited, it provides a unique opportunity for installers willing to put the effort in. Roseview Director Paul Bygrave explains: “After the initial fanfare, many now feel that the Green Homes Grant has turned into a bit of a damp squib. But if you look a little closer we believe it still provides a clear opportunity for installers. The scheme may be more complicated than originally thought, but with a little effort there’s potentially a rich seam of business here.
“First we have to look at how many homes are suitable.” Paul continues. “Different surveys suggest that between 85% and 95% of homes are double-glazed. Given that the Office for National Statistics estimate that there are almost 28 million homes in the UK, that means somewhere between 1.4 and 4.2 million homes still have single glazing. That’s not an insignificant number, especially when you consider that many of them are likely to be clustered. “To be able to offer solutions for these homes installers need to be approved. That means being registered with TrustMark. It may also

But for installers prepared to put the effort in, the potential rewards are great.” mean being PAS 2030 accredited. At the moment PAS 2030 accreditation still hasn’t been publicly confirmed, and we’re hearing talk that a cut-down version may allow installers to register for the scheme. What we can say is that many installers won’t bother trying, cutting the competition for Green Home Grant projects.” Paul concludes: “The scheme only runs until March 2021, so this is clearly a time-limited opportunity. But for installers prepared to put the effort in, the potential rewards are great. Ultimately this is a gilt-edged chance for homeowners with single-glazing to receive government funding to get it replaced or enhanced. Registered installers who offer the right products – and sash windows and secondary glazing are perfect for upgrading single-glazing – could do very well.” For more information on Rose Collection sash windows and Incarnation secondary glazing, visit www.roseview.co.uk or call 01234 712657.

MATES IN MIND CHARITY LAUNCHES SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY SUPPORT This World Suicide Prevention Day, Mates in Mind are calling on employers to take meaningful steps to normalise conversations about mental ill-health and prevention of suicide within the workplace. With over 6,507 suicides registered in the UK in 2018 alone*, it is vital that employers can start this conversation in the workplace and support their employees.
health gaps and supporting their workforces. Opening up an honest conversation about mental health in the workplace continues to be the most immediate and effective starting point. We cannot underestimate this important first step – helping to provide clear language, create general awareness and help people to recognise that everyone has mental health the same way that they have physical health."
Here at Mates in Mind, we believe breaking the silence and stigma surrounding mental ill-health is a crucial step towards providing a safe and healthy workplace environment, which can play a vital role in suicide prevention.
Research suggests that open and honest communication about mental ill-health supports steps towards suicide prevention, because these important conversations have the power to increase awareness and understanding, remind people they are not alone and help break the stigma which can be a barrier for those seeking help. In light of this, we are encouraging workplaces across the UK to use this opportunity to #StartTheConversation within the workplace.
Mates in Mind Managing Director, James Rudoni comments: “We know that the effect on those impacted by suicide is lasting and we believe that every suicide is a preventable death. Mental health can be a difficult topic to address, but anything mentionable is manageable. What we know from data previously reported by the ONS (2018) is that the risk of suicide is elevated in some sectors of the economy, such as construction, which is three times the national average for site workers, which is why we exist, to help support these sectors in bridging the mental

The company has doubled its turnover since lockdown and remains well on track to continue to meet its ambitious growth strategy. It recently opened a second manufacturing unit in Gloucester to keep pace with demand for its products and it has made a considerable investment in automation machinery too.
Paul is joining Mercury at an exciting time in its history as the Gloucesterbased business looks to further increase market share over the next few years. Steve concludes: “Paul’s undoubted skills look set to add even further value to our strong and dynamic business and with more high-level appointments coming on board soon, the future is looking very bright.” Tel: 01452 383 344 www.mercuryglazing.co.uk

TONY BASILE STRENGTHENS PACE RESOURCING PRODUCES
SHEERLINE TECHNICAL SALES TEAM SECOND IN SERIES OF Garnalex welcomes Tony Basile as one of the cornerstones of a strong Sheerline Technical Sales Team. Joining Paul Greenaway, in the newly-created roles of Technical Sales Managers, Tony will drive sales by helping customers set up as Sheerline fabricators – as well as offering sales support. The Technical Sales Team will offer training to fabricators, and their installer customers’ staff, and provide proactive technical assistance and support.
outstanding, particularly due to the innovation and simplicity of the system and the corner jointing method. For too long aluminium has taken a back seat in product development compared to PVC, but we’ve been able to pack Sheerline full of practical innovation and make life easier for fabricators and installers, helping redress the balance. Sheerline is an industry breakthrough: no one else is offering windows and doors with the same benefits.” Garnalex CEO, Roger Hartshorn, adds: “Tony is an industry veteran and a familiar and much-liked face for many Sheerline customers and prospects. He joins our new Technical Sales department, set up because Sheerline systems are unique in incorporating many innovations and radically new ways of fabrication, assembly, and installation. To reflect that
Tony’s industry knowledge and technical experience gained at Eurocell and Liniar lends itself perfectly to this new role. Having worked in a variety of disciplines from selling to manufacturing and installing windows, doors and conservatories, Tony has an all-round indepth understanding of fabricators’ and installers’ needs. Tony comments on his new role: “There has been a tsunami of enthusiasm for Sheerline. It really is a breath of fresh air for the aluminium industry. Feedback so far has been
different focus, we’ve taken an integrated approach to sales and support, with technical experts giving customers real support, rather than just pushing the hard sell.” Sheerline, currently featuring the stunning ultra-slim Classic, is a cool contemporary system that is also a perfect replacement for heritagestyle steel windows. The range will be expanded later this year with the launch of the core window and doors system - Sheerline Prestige. “If these were cars,” Roger explains, “Classic would be a niche product, rather like a sports car, while Prestige would be our all-purpose saloon.” To learn more about Sheerline Classic call 01332 883 960 or visit www.sheerline.com. VIRUS CRISIS EMPLOYEE MANAGEMENT WHITE PAPERS
The second in a series of white papers by Pace Resourcing should do much to assist managers in handling one of the biggest challenges brought about by the pandemic: employees working from home. It forms the second of a series of three guides from the fenestration industry specialist that supports employers on staff-related matters. Pace Resourcing decided to produce the series after recognising that the virus crisis is forcing business leaders to adapt and find new ways of working, particularly in the field of employee management. Director Vivien Globe explains: “Many business leaders assume that homeworking is a temporary measure, and that we’ll eventually get back to more normal working practices. However, the truth is the post-pandemic workplace will never be the same again. Economic, environmental and safety concerns mean that it is highly likely that a proportion of most businesses’ staff will find home-working desirable, whether full-time or for
part of the week. And with that comes a whole raft of implications for managers who must adapt to new challenges.”
health of their staff. In addition, it details the type of guidance that can be offered to employees in this area.
This second white paper focuses mainly on the crucial topics of physical and mental staff wellbeing, and separately introduces the subject of protection of confidential business data.
Finally, on the topic of protecting confidential business information, the paper explains the importance of correct procedures and policies, communication of them to staff, and how to go about ensuring that data breaches do not occur. For example, it might be imperative to ensure that family, friends and visitors are unable to see sensitive, confidential data. Bosses may even need to spell out that failure to adhere to their company’s home-working policy in the area of data protection could result in disciplinary proceedings.
On the physical aspect of home-working the guide explains what employers can do to help employees mitigate risk. It details how to ensure that areas such as workspace, seating and lighting can be tackled to ensure physical health and safety. The paper outlines online mini risk assessments, advises on online surveys that employers can put together for their staff, and offers other useful suggestions. On mental wellbeing of staff after lockdown, the white paper lists the key tell-tale signs and circumstances that employers should look out for, which may indicate or be a precursor to mental health deterioration. The guide outlines the practical steps that an employer can take to support the mental
