All the Right Moves The Glass Hat Magazine is sailing on a smooth drift and it’s time to unload another new form of creative brilliance this month. For most sports followers, March means “March Madness” and the college basketball population will be carefully monitoring their ESPN brackets, so they can win the right to brag at the end of the tournament. Hard work, team cohesiveness, and dedication are all found in all the NCAA basketball tournament games. The person that I had the distinct honor to meet this month is an outstanding athlete who has all the right moves. I am proud to introduce Miki Kawamura to everyone this month. She is a professional ballet dancer who is the epitome of what hard work stands for. She is living her dream and she is willing to put in the extra effort to be successful. Life is about making the right choices and each choice a person makes can be a good or bad experience. I made a choice at the beginning of the year that I wanted the GHM to be different each month. I envisioned that the magazine will reach all types of people and that readers would have something special to get excited about each month. The magazine is for the people and represents life, passion, and liberty. In order, for the magazine to grow, please spread the word by checking us out on Facebook at (http://www.facebook.com/#!/ glasshatmag?fref=ts) and also tell your friends to visit our website at (www.glasshatmag.com). The support is greatly appreciated and will help the magazine prosper in the future. The light is shining bright and the magazine will continue to bring variety. My final words of wisdom are for the spring breakers that have decided to fly to Vegas, San Jose Del Cabo, or South Padre Island to have fun. Please remember to purchase a copy of GHM, so that you can get some quality reading time in while you are in between flights, and don’t do anything I would not do. Beware The Ides of March By Ava Rose When I was in the 8th grade, I remember reading the play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. I was given the part of the old soothsayer, a fortuneteller or psychic. The only lines the soothsayer says to Julius Caesar, is “Beware the ides of March.” Caesar sent the soothsayer away. Julius believed luck was on his side. Shame for Caesar, it was not. No lucky charms, no genie, no magic ruby red slippers, and no god, was on his side. How does the story of poor Caesar relate to you? As a plus-sized model, a former pageant girl, and a person who has worked with several modeling-industry people, I have seen and heard the same warning. Many have tried to inform me, teach me, and mold me so I am not chased down the rabbit holes of the industry. Many rising stars burn out long before their time. Many people entering the fashion industry are hungry for their shot. They do not realize how others around them, or even themselves, can ruin their career before they get started. One of the primary warnings I hear is, “Beware [insert name of shady person]. They will do anything to be on top.” When I hear this, I always wonder, is this jealousy? Is this because that person is on top of their a-game? What is the motive behind someone warning you about said shady person? There are many people that I would not do business with if given the chance. This decision is usually reached after I have seen their work or heard of situations that are frightening or unethical. If someone gives me this warning, I think about why I may, or may not, agree to working with that individual. If it is rumors, I sometimes go to the source of the
rumor. Making a judgment to work with someone is a personal one. Sometimes the best work is done by “shady” people, just make sure your safety, best interest and work is always taken in account.
and space, they can say anything to you. The best advice is to know that once you put ‘I am [insert profession] and open’ on a social media page, the cyber creeps and critics will flock to you.
Next common warning, “That person is not really a model/photographer/stylist/ make-up artist.” Many newbies in the industry wanting to start a portfolio, get known, or get clients, flock to open auditions, trades, and other special events in hopes of being discovered. It is hard to do good work and become one of the artists that people say great things about. When I see events that are not suitable to my standards, or look like someone is trying to use the event as a dating auction, I pass. Many times, early in careers in the fashion industry, there will be costs to building a portfolio, working with photographers, or getting the right gigs to display who you can be. Later when the portfolio and clients come, you will be able to be choosey.
Lastly, I have watched several modeling-industry people go through the same thing that poor Caesar did, metaphorically speaking. “Y Tu Brutus?” On the Ides of March, March 15th, every senator in Rome plunged a dagger into Caesar, his best friend Brutus stabbed him in the back. As he fell to the ground he said, “And you too, Brutus.” This last warning is probably the saddest of the industry. I have watched friends, business partners, and long time associates steal, lie, cheat, talk about, and do someone in because they felt that that person was rising faster than themselves. Many people walk around stunned when they have heard someone stole an idea from them, that another person has taken from them, and, sadly extinguished their passion. Many people have stood by and watched someone kill another person’s dreams.
Social media is huge. Many people have great displays of their work on social media, and this warning often follows, “Beware the cyber creeps.” Many of the people who can view your information are not always there to look at the art. Remember this is not your own personal portfolio or personal space where you can choose who sees what. “Once on the web, always on the web”. I’ve had friends say they have had trouble at work because of their ‘5 second rules’ about social media and personal displays. Many people get hit-on through their social media, because there are people who see portfolios as their own personal dating site. Many people on social media may believe, because of the anonymity
The Ides of March happen every day. Every time I work with someone, I carry the warnings with me. I have seen many terrible things happen to people in the industry. We have been given a chance to learn and grown from one another. The greatest part of March is that is brings new life, ideas, people, and events. March is a month of renewal. Beware the Ides of March in your industry. Water your own seeds of hope and success. March will be full of blooms.

Glass Hat Magazine Interview Ballet Dancer Miki Kawamura
Interview By: Nathaniel Ray Goodwin
Photography by Art of Tyme
I walked into the Ballet Company dance studio in Oklahoma City, and I did not know what to expect. I have seen ballet performances on T.V. but I never met a ballet dancer in real life. I had this overwhelming feeling of anxiousness and I tried to mask my interviewer jitters. I arrived on the scene and immediately was welcomed by the benevolent Miki Kawamura and the charismatic artistic director Robert Mills. During the interview, I learned so much about ballet dancing and I also developed a new profound sense of respect and admiration for dancers. Miki is a ballet dancer that has many exceptional qualities. I was very motivated after the interview that afterward, I wanted to get some ballet shoes and try to do the splits. Keep in mind this was all in theory as I did not want to end up spending the rest of my Saturday night in the hospital. Ballet is a mixture of acting, grace, and flexibility, and Miki is a great representation of what ballet means. Tell me about yourself? My name is Miki Kawamura and I was born in Sapporo, Japan. I joined the Ballet Company in 2010 and I have been dancing since the age of 10. Can you describe a situation in your life that prevented you from reaching a dancing goal? The hardest part about being a dancer is overcoming injuries. As a performer, I want to give my best every time I step on the stage, but sometimes injuries prevent me from doing what I love to do. I recently had to prevail over an injury that kept me immobile from dancing for 6 weeks. I had to use crutches and it hurt me emotionally to not be able to dance. What is the best accomplishment that you have achieved as a ballet dancer? I got a chance to dance for “The Ballet Company. I was extremely lucky to get here, and I am thankful that Robert Mills [the artistic director] decided to offer me a job The best feeling for me is when I perform on the center stage and the audience cheers and loves my dancing. Why did you decide to join a ballet dancing company? I wanted to be part of a company that is new compared to a ballet company that is already established. When Robert offered me a contract, he told me the vision of the ballet company and I thought that I would be a perfect fit for the company. What do you plan to do once you are featured in the Glass Hat Magazine? I plan to tell people about the Glass Hat Magazine and spread the word to all my friends and my family. I am happy that the GHM is taking the time to interview me and get to know me.

Can you describe your typical day as a professional dancer? A typical day as a ballet dancer starts at 9:00am and goes to 4:30pm. We have a lunch break in between that last for 30 minutes and we rehearse from 1:00pm until 4:30pm. After practice, I stretch and ice my feet, so that I can recover fast and be ready for tomorrow practice. What are 3 qualities that are needed to become a successful ballet dancer? Listening, adapting, and passion. Each of these qualities will help dancer overcome objectives and be able to live their life. Is it hard finding work as a ballet dancer in Oklahoma? I think its hard finding work in Oklahoma, and in other states, as a performer. There are many dancers that are trying to find work and want jobs. Ballet companies are very selective when they choose dancers and it’s hard for new dancers to land a contract. The economy has a direct impact on how many dancers ballet companies can afford and many companies are being forced to downsize dancers because they do not have enough money to afford them. In some cases, there are talented experienced dancers that cannot find
20
jobs, so it’s not just new dancers that are dealing with unfortunate working conditions. Do you have any other hobbies or interests that are not related to dancing that you would like to share with us? I like to run in my spare time. I want to run more, but now that I have tendinitis problems, I am limited to
how much I run each week. I currently run once a week, but I would like to increase that to three times a week in the future. I run both indoors on a treadmill, and outdoors at a lake setting. What is your advice to aspiring ballet dancers that have dreams to become professional dancers? Do not be afraid to show who you are as a dancer www.glasshatmag.com

and a person. Follow your path and follow your dreams and work hard every single moment to reach your goals. Who is your favorite role model that gives you inspiration? I don’t have a particular person that is my favorite role model. Many things inspire me to become a great
22
ballet dancer. My friends, beautiful weather, little kids that come up to me and tell me “Oh Miki, I loved your performance tonight. I have many sources that have molded me into the person I am today.
dancing ballet was going to be something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I am pleased that I can be a professional full time dancer each day.
What is your dream job? I am working at my dream job right now. I knew that

Featured Project 25
Paper Brides by Mark Gunter
A simple concept added to a short but growing list lay quiet for three long years before all the necessary pieces were gathered. It was written down on a whim, a “whatif” to be explored later. No agenda. No opinion. Just beautiful women photographed with a theme in mind. While learning the ropes of working with models, I had the opportunity to collaborate with makeup artist Becca Marshall. Over time, we discussed various ideas, but the paper bride theme quickly rose to the top. My mind turned to my wonderful niece, Nikki Gunter. We have worked together before; three of her dresses are the highlight of one of the most popular images in my portfolio. The time between originally discussing this concept with Becca and Nikki went from days to weeks to months. Every conversation included the question, “When are we going to do the shoot?” Between the three of us, there were plenty of careers, projects, education, and living going on with distractions aplenty. My own insecurities played the largest role in the delay. I had a clear vision in my head. The last thing I wanted was to fail in the execution. The conversation would be over a year old before concept became photo-shoot. A date was set. A casting call was announced. The
26
response was good. It quickly became an issue of selecting as diverse a group of models as possible. While I am sure we selected the right women for this project, I still wish we had the time, energy, and resources to use all interested models. Once the selection process was complete and everyone notified, the real planning began. Each model would represent a different ethnicity or regional group. Knowing that much of the work would need to be done on site, we assigned arrival times for the models, scheduling two to arrive each hour. This would give an hour for hair, makeup, and fitting before the next pair arrived. Armed with a large roll of kraft paper, paper tape, and a ball of twine, Nikki had created a good portion of each look ahead of time, but much was left to be done. At least one dress was built from scratch in what seemed a matter of minutes. The resulting designs brought the final concept to life. The fact that they were basically well-designed paper sacks was only given away as the models walked (or shuffled, for those in tighter dresses) onto the set. As a part-time photographer, I do most of my studio shooting in my home. Realizing that climbing stairs to the usual space would present a problem for the kraft paper creations, I took possession of the garage. The mild weather was a
perfect accomplice, allowing for a few outdoor shots to give the models some variety when choosing a photo for their portfolio. The setup was simple: white vinyl backdrop, two lights on the background, and a third on one corner of the backdrop to light the subject at a 45 degree angle. With each model, I would take a few beauty shots using the main light and a reflector to create classic clamshell lighting. Keeping the lighting straight forward allowed the shooting to move at a quick pace. The models were amazing. We had revealed very little to them about the shoot. When Nikki walked into the changing area with what appeared to be a stack of cut, crumpled paper sacks, I think they may have become a bit worried. Once they saw the first dress, they invested themselves completely. Some of the early models were kind enough to wear their kraft paper fashion for hours while waiting for group shots. When it was discovered that the paper dresses were going to be thrown away, one of the models immediately asked if she could keep hers, requesting an autograph from the designer on the garment. In hindsight, I waited far too long to do this shoot. Getting everyone on board and a schedule lined up was the most difficult aspect of the project. The rest was pure, unadulterated photography fun!
