Spring is here: Conquer your Fears The glorious moment has finally arrived, and now Oklahoma residents can expect to have exhilarating weather for the next couple of months. Spring can be used as a metaphor to describe the way people view the GHM. In essence, the magazine will continue to change and every month new modifications will be made to preserve the image of the magazine. The change can be compared to the four seasons. Each season has a different sensation and triggers a different type of emotional response from GHM supporters. Many people are starting to be aware of the concepts that GHM are incorporating and now the magazine is ready to make a stand. I recently had a discussion with a close friend and an important question came up that I want to restate to everyone. The question was “Why do you work so hard for the GHM?” At first, I was going to answer the question with a preset answer that I know would sound politically correct, but I chose not to go that route. I decided to speak from my heart and give an authentic answer. I work very hard for the GHM because I am scared to fail and I want the magazine to give people hope. I admit that my individual desires might sound generic but I truly do believe in the success of the magazine. Success and failure go hand and hand and a person can learn from both. I encourage everyone to find an activity that is fun and make a commitment. The last order of business that I want to address is age. The trite expression that many of us have heard a million times is “With age comes wisdom.” I secretly dread my birthday this month because I am getting older and I am close to turning thirty. I want to stay youthful forever and never slow down, but as much as I hope to stay young forever, I must face reality. The point that I am attempting to emphasize is that every person has a fear that they must face in their lifetime. Fear can lead a person down two roads. The first road is a virtuous path that leads to a life of satisfaction. The second road is a dreadful path that involves pain and discontentment. Which road will you choose to travel on? I’m Gonna Pop Some Tags...
One of my favorite songs on the radio right now is Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Wanz. Every time this song comes on, I jam out and laugh. The song is pretty catchy, and it pokes fun at the fashion industry, popular designers, cost, and thriftiness. Who wouldn’t laugh at a song that identifies that the average person cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars on designer wear. I personally want to be Upgrade YOU mode like B [Byonce’], and pop the purple labels. But, realistically, I cannot upgrade anyone else, nonetheless myself. I am living off a working girl’s budget, and the artist Macklemore may have made it a little more trendy to shop within my means. I know many of my friends are embarrassed to admit their designer label is really a hand me down, a gift from a friend who can afford to lavish on niceties, or a knock off item found at the local flea market or thrift store. I always wondered why people are so embarrassed to live within their means. Looking nice can be done on a budget. With the right thrift shops, the right consignment stores, Ebay, Amazon Marketplace, and Etsy-ing, people would be shocked what 20 dollars could get. Every city has great “secret” places where last season’s designer fashions can be found for a steal. I have come to realize that many label lovers and those living on fixed budgets may not know where to look. For a long time I have been budget affected by school. If you do not know anything about school, I can tell you that from undergrad to PH.D, I spent almost 12 years of being BROKE. Budgeting in school does not always lend to having the nicer things. In college, image is part of the students influence and popularity. Although, I would

have loved to spend my college years in a university team hoodie, t-shirt, jeans, boots, or slippers, that would not have been acceptable in most of the environments I went to daily. How could I look like I had a designer outfit on with a poor student budget? I learned to shop the consignment shops and thrift stores in more upscale neighborhoods. I was shocked to find this big, warehouse tucked in the back of a very ritzy suburb of Cincinnati when I was in graduate school. Surprisingly, I was able to buy upscale labels in shoes, dresses, slacks, work blouses, purses, and accessories for as low as $2 and up to $15. I was shocked that many of these items did not even look like the previous owner had even worn them. My best buy from this store was a real mink stohl a fur wrap) for $50. If I bought it brand new from a furrier, it would have low end cost $3000. I walked around with the fur wrap in my cart for 30 minutes deciding if I wanted it. A woman in her early 60’s followed behind me trying to convince me I did not want it. When I finally went to the cashier to purchase it, the lady said, “Dear, you made a great purchase.” Then she told me how to take care of it. Every time I wear that stohl, I internally chuckle knowing people think I paid thousands for it, and it was only $50. Additionally, many cities have secret gems hidden within nonprofit organizations. Traditional places such as Salvation Army have great consignments and thrift stores. Many have great bargain days, such as stuff a paper bag full of red dot items and it is $(insert crazy low price). Some have value days, such as 50% off Wednesday. I am so shocked at great the things I can get on these days. Also, previous work with YWCA identified that many of the clothes that are donated are not

items that may be used in time of crisis. Some of the items are used for women who are transitioning to work or school. So the excess items are cleaned, and taken to the YWCA affiliated consignment shop. Many items are nice, have well recognizable labels, and are considerably lower than shopping in the store. Another great local non-profit is the Junior League. This organization has a great system that asks its’ members, as part of their charity, to donate their clothing items monthly. Many times, these women are the movers and shakers of the community, which means they are wearing designer items once or twice and they are then donated. In all of these shops, kid’s clothes, men’s and women’s clothes, accessories, and house wares can be found. I am amazed at the quality, the names, and availability of nice items these non-profits have for a drastically reduced prices. Lastly, the internet has become the next best thing if shopping on a budget. Through the internet I have been able to purchase designer label knock-off dresses made to my specific measurements for a low cost. I attended a winter ball where everyone wore Cinderella ball gowns and tuxes. I found a dress on Ebay that, if I purchased at a wedding boutique, it would have cost $3,000. The cost on Ebay, tailor made to me, made a month prior to the ball was $150 after shipping costs. My gown was the talk of the ball. Amazon is another great contender of clothing, shoes, and other items on budget conscious shoppers. A new trend is buying items on Etsy.com. My friend has had two costumes tailor made from artists on Etsy. Last year’s costume of Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games cost her $100 to get made. My friend won several costume contests and winnings tripled what she spent to get her costume made. This is also helping small business

and found within the local community, or on the internet. Do not be afraid to pay less for more. Just have fun. “I’m going to pop some tags, I have twenty dollars in my pocket, I’m
