Hi Everyone... You may have noticed this week’s edition feels a little thicker than usual and, as you would expect, it is full of great stories about all the positive things that are happening in our neck of the woods. We have actually included one story about Pomona – and yes, I know that seems a bit of a stretch for us. However, when we realised just how well three of our awesome Glasshouse Country and Blackall Range athletes did in the recent Pomona King of the Mountain race we couldn’t help showing off what a great training ground we have here. Check out the story on page 5. And soon it won’t be just awesome trail runners that we produce here. Looking at what is planned for the upgrade at Beerwah Pool in the coming months we should see the area producing a local Olympian one day as well. Find that story on page 7. And I just wanted to ask a little favour - if you haven’t got around to completing our readership survey, please do. We have printed it in the paper again this week in the centre pages, or you can head to our website www.gcnews.com.au.

Beerwah local Igor Ejmont has returned home from the USA where he competed in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA), making it just in time to perform in Maleny High School’s musical ‘Popstars’ and to finish rehearsals for his role in the current Maleny Players’ show. The international event held in Los Angeles featured singers, musicians, dancers, variety artists, actors and models from 60 countries competing before judges from the entertainment industry. Growing up, Igor enjoyed a range of creative pursuits and at high school this included performing in two school musicals as well as completing in a music tour and an accelerated dance certificate II course. However, he reckons that there is evidence from as far back as when he was in year 3 that the performing arts were for him, when he kept busy role playing stories from his imagination in his backyard. In December last year he decided to join the professional development program at Goodwin Performing Arts in Maroochydore to study modelling, singing and acting. Two months into his training, the director Alison Goodwin encouraged Igor to become part of the Australian team for WCOPA.
Igor said the actual competition was brilliant. “Initially performing did make me incredibly nervous, since it was my first actual competition,” he said. “However, I have gained a new confidence, insight and appreciation for performing and other performers, and I came out of WCOPA as a silver and bronze multi-medalist as well as a talent award from the NY Film Academy. “I scored a silver and two bronzes for both acting and modelling, a silver in the acting open category and bronzes for comedy and classical as well as a silver for modelling swimwear and bronzes for modelling formal and casual wear. Andrew Wallace of Maleny Players said Igor was an unusually gifted young man who clearly had a great future ahead of him in theatre. “The Maleny Players are pleased to have Igor performing in their current offering of three one-act plays entitled Dubious Expectations. Igor has a role in the George Bernard Shaw play ‘How He Lied to Her Husband’,” Andrew said. If you would like to see Igor’s talents for yourself you can head to the final weekend of the show. Tickets are available from Imelda's on Maple or online bookings can be made on www.trybooking.com/BDYGZ.

The local government elections are now less than eight months away, with election day on Saturday, March 28, 2020. If you are thinking of running for council, you don’t have much time to waste. Previous elections have shown that if you haven’t built up a community profile by the time nominations for the election officially open, your chances of garnering enough votes to get over the line are lessened … especially if you’re up against a long-term incumbent. Council elections are now fixed four-year terms. Tighter rules for local government elections are currently being considered by state parliament that will affect all candidates and the way we vote for them. These possible changes include: • compulsory preferential voting in council elections, which will standardise the election system across all three tiers of government; • public funding for council candidate campaigns, set at $1.57 per vote received, in a bid to reduce candidate reliance on third party donations; • compulsory candidate training before elections are held; • caps on election spending by candidates; • public interest registers that require all candidates to disclose any contracts they have with council, political party membership or any development applications they or close associates have before council; and • real time financial and gift disclosures for council candidates, groups of candidates and third parties.
The Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs is advising prospective candidates that to stay within the proposed guidelines they will need to have maintained election expenditure records since May 1 this year. So … are you thinking of running? At the next election, Division 5 will be an open field with the retirement of Cr Jenny McKay. Open-field elections – such as Division 5 – are generally closely contested, bringing out a larger field of contestants than would normally be the case. To date, one candidate – Richard Bruinsma from Palmwoods – has openly announced that he will be running in Division 5, so has gained the notoriety jump on other potential candidates. Richard has been proactive in his campaigning efforts, holding community meet-and-greet sessions across the division and attending community events in his role as the editor of the ‘Sunshine Valley Gazette’. At time of publication, no other Division 5 candidates had made their presence known. In Division 1, Cr Rick Baberowski will run again aiming for this third term in office. Last election, a field of four candidates competed with Cr Baberowski, who gained 64% of the vote. To date there have been no firm indications of anyone planning to run against Cr Baberowski. Are you thinking of running in Division 1 or Division 5 – or even for Mayor? If so, contact Glasshouse Country & Maleny News and talk to us about what we can offer candidates in the lead up to elections.

Locals top mountain challenge By Sonia Clark There must be something special about training on the Glass House Mountains as the top local placegetters in this year’s Pomona King of the Mountain challenge all used the local peaks as part of their intensive training regimens. Held on Sunday, July 28, the 2019 Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge saw a mix of both local and international athletes battle it out for the coveted title of King and Queen of the Mountain. The event, now in its 41st year, attracts international interest with its blend of elite athletes and everyday heroes willing to take on the Mount Cooroora challenge. Beerwah mum, Reesha Lewis, 32, nailed her Queen of the Mountain win coming in with an impressive additional achievement of a sub-30 time of 29.49 minutes – gaining her an additional medal as she smashed her personal goal of completing the gruelling race in under 30 minutes. Reesha said she was gobsmacked to have won this year’s title. Veteran winner Brian Wilder
“This was my second year competing and I knew I would be up against some serious trail runners so I had a strategy to hold back and just keep the lead ladies in my sights heading up as I knew I could be pretty fast coming back down,” Reesha said. It seems Reesha’s hard work and strategy paid off. In preparation for the event Reesha made sure she climbed at least one local mountain a day in addition to her daily boxing regimen of up to six hours of training a day. On the morning of the event Reesha said she needed a proper warm up so before heading up to Pomona for the afternoon race, she made sure she had time to run up and down Mt. Beerwah! As part of winning Queen of the Mountain, Reesha gets a fully paid trip to New Zealand to compete in the Trans-Tasman rival event, Kawerau King of the Mountain in early November. “My boxing training has really increased my fitness levels over the last year and although I said I won’t race again, I’m already considering competing again in next year’s competition,” Reesha said. Mapleton man Boaz Clark, 25, took out the 2019 King of the Mountain. The former elite mountain bike racer was like a lean and mean mountain climbing machine as he aced the competition with an easy win of 26.30 minutes. This was his second challenge and he beat his previous race record by just over three minutes.
2019 King and Queen of the Mountain Boaz Clark and Reesha Lewis Proving that older guys have still got it, Peachester man Brian Wilder, 47, came third in the overall field of nearly 100 challengers, with another impressive sub-30 race time of 27.37 minutes. The former marathon runner hasn’t run competitively since 2014 but since moving back to Australia last year and relocating to the Sunshine Coast hinterland the call of the Glass House Mountains lured him back into tackling personal fitness challenges. Last year he climbed 12 of the Glass House Mountains in one day. A few months ago when he heard about the King of the Mountain race it was a logical next challenge. Brian also received a first medal in his veteran class.

Landsborough will be the site for a Queenslandfirst trial technology to stop flying foxes from dying during heat wave conditions. During conditions where the temperature reaches over 40 degrees and the humidity is low, roosting flying foxes suffer extreme dehydration and heat stress, which can lead to mass deaths. On the Sunshine Coast the peak heat wave risk period coincides with female flying foxes congregating in maternity roosts and this heat stress affects both mothers and their babies. This happened at the Landsborough Vidler Park flying fox roosting site in 2014 resulting in a mass mortality where many females and their defenceless babies suffered and died. Experts have found that heat stress can be alleviated by wetting the bats. To date, the only way this can be done is by people with backpack sprayers walking through the forest and misting water onto the bats. This activity not only requires a large workforce it is problematic as the presence of people can agitate and further stress the flying foxes. Sunshine Coast Council thought there had to be a better way. Council staff, irrigation contractors, technology experts and wildlife researchers have combined to devise a solar-powered, automated heat stress response system using cutting edge wi-fi technology to control misting sprinklers installed in the forest where the maternity roost is located.
The technology monitors the conditions in the forest, alerting officers when the conditions are heading towards a heat wave scenario. Council officers can then autonomously start up the system, triggering the misting sprinklers to operate within the roosting trees, cooling the flying foxes without having to mobilise a large labour force and reducing the risk of further stressing the animals. With the system now installed, council plans to partner with researchers and the state government to test and trial the approach leading into the heat wave season this summer. Following the trial, council will investigate the opportunity to install additional heat stress units at other known roosting sites in anticipation of another warm summer. Council is asking locals to be aware of the trial that will be happening in the bushland reserve between Myla Road and Buckley Street over the next 12 months or so. According to council staff, the equipment is noiseless and unobtrusive, so local residents will not even be aware when it is in operation. The only indication that the trial is operating will be a trailer located in the park and some council signage. Council has installed security and CCTV to monitor any untoward activity around the equipment.

Beerwah pool transformation underway If you haven’t noticed, there’s something going on down at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre. Construction has started on a $1.8 million upgrade to the aquatic centre, which will see a new 17m heated and covered pool built, with special features making it easier for swimmers of all abilities to access the pool. Along with the new pool, improvements will be made to the car parking and the Roberts Road entrance, plus a refurbishment of some of the centre’s other facilities. Funding for the upgrade has been a cooperative effort, with Sunshine Coast Council providing $1.04 million, pool operators Swim Fit contributing $260,000 and $500,000 coming from a federal government sporting grant. At the ceremonial sod turning last week, Mayor Mark Jamieson said that the Beerwah Aquatic Centre was an essential part of our healthy, smart and creative lifestyle. “People of all ages and abilities will be able to enjoy these new and improved facilities when works are completed later in the year.” Local councillor Rick Baberowski, who took his own children to the pool to learn how to swim, said the upgrades will make a big difference to people from across the Glasshouse Country region. “Locals know this upgrade is about much more than making the presentation of the building look a hell of

a lot better,” Cr Baberowski said. “Not only will there be a much improved experience for people requiring warm water therapy but fitness class participants and children learning to swim will have significantly more space.” Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace was pleased that the federal government’s community sport infrastructure grant would help the health and wellbeing of local people. “Whatever your stage in life, staying active is vital for our physical fitness but it is also critical for our mental health as well,” he said. The aquatic centre will continue to operate as normal during construction but there may be some access disruptions during this time. The new pool is planned to be up and running in November this year.

Mooloolah meeting explores local viewpoints By Greg Brown Wild dogs, weeds, Brandenburg Road, King Road, trucks, speeding, crime, Neighbourhood Watch, CCTV cameras and mobile phone towers were all points of discussion at last Thursday’s town meeting in Mooloolah. Organised through the newly established Mooloolah Residents Group, more than 30 locals attended the night meeting at the hall to raise and discuss issues relevant to the Mooloolah community. Cr Jenny McKay reported back on a number of programs Sunshine Coast Council has under way in Mooloolah at the moment. A biosecurity survey was approved at the last council meeting, which will see council staff checking properties for declared weeds and undertaking a range of feral animal control programs. This includes the contentious bi-annual 1080 bait campaign targeting wild dogs and foxes. Good news for Brandenburg Road users. Detailed design work is about to start for the next stage of upgrading the road. The actual bitumen road works are planned for the 2020/2021 financial year. There appears to be some confusion as to whether trucks servicing the new development off King Road will be using Maddock Avenue as a haulage route. Local residents are fearful that the narrow road is not suitable for the estimated 120 dump trucks traversing back and forth each day. Cr McKay vowed to investigate and report back.
Beerwah Police Senior Constable Susan Lowndes has researched the crime statistics for the last couple of years and reported that they have been stable at about 60 reportable offences each year. This surprised the meeting as many perceived that crime is on the increase in and around Mooloolah. “But we also want to know what’s happening locally, so please report incidences as well as offences,” Senior Constable Lowndes told those assembled. She explained the role of a Neighbourhood Watch group, saying that one existed covering the whole Glasshouse Country region. The group meets at the Beerwah Library and the next meeting is August 13 at 3pm. A CCTV proposal was raised by the meeting chair, Jason Carroll, who explained that federal grant funding is available to buy the hardware. Discussion went around the room on the merits or otherwise of having cameras in the town. Jason explained that it is at a proposal stage and that a further town meeting will be held to specifically discuss the issue. By far the most controversial item discussed was the development application for a mobile phone tower at 390 Tunnel Ridge Road. Many residents were unaware of the application for the Optus tower and with public submissions closing the day of the town meeting, many thought that the submission period should be extended.
Cr McKay didn’t think that would be possible. “Be assured tower applications certainly don’t bring me any joy,” she told the meeting. “But we have to assess applications that are lawfully made. We have refused a number of towers recently, with many of the decisions being reversed under appeal in the Planning and Environment Court.” The meeting concluded with a vigorous discussion on the health and safety of mobile phone and nbn towers and the electromagnetic fields they broadcast, and the issues this causes people who identify as having electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Subsequent to the meeting, a decision was made to change the approach to future meetings, with Jason informing the Mooloolah community via the Mooloolah Valley Bush Telegraph Facebook page. “Just a short note to say thanks to all who came along to the Residents Group Meeting last night,” Jason posted on the page. “All future meetings will be announced by the Division 5 Councillor and no further Resident Group Meetings will take place. “Thanks to all that have contributed.” More information on future Mooloolah meetings will be printed as it comes to hand.

Maleny nurse helping to shed light on Nepal Annette Richardson, a registered nurse at Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, is about to take her 16th trip to Nepal as part of her volunteer work with not-for-profit organisation Shed the Light Australia/Nepal. As a volunteer for Shed the Light, Ms Richardson travels to all parts of Nepal carrying out community consultation and health camps. “Our wonderful charity was started by a Kenilworth local, Suzanne Kupiac, who sadly passed away in 2014. A small band of us are carrying on her legacy for the poor and marginalised in Nepal,” Ms Richardson said. “I have had a long and varied nursing career. My mum signed me up for nursing in the 1970s to stop me roaming the world. Now all my skills have allowed me to do just that. “While in Nepal, each day is unique. Sometimes our programs take place with very little notice - we’ll be required to gather what equipment or medicines we can, hire a four-wheel troop carrier, grab some of our workers and go. “Other days its wholesale shopping for our retail outlets that we have in Maleny and Kenilworth, with lots of haggling, drinking chai and spreading the news of the work Shed the Light is doing,” she said. “My own personal crusade has been to rebuild a community school that was destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes. I’ve raised money selling silver jewellery and children’s clothing I make. I also organise crazy shirt and sock days at work to raise funds.

I squash as many new toothbrushes, sanitary items and clothing into my bag each trip,” Ms Richardson said. “The biggest joy I get is when I see the most beautiful smiles, humbleness and genuine gratitude on the faces of the Nepalese community when they realise we are doing it all from the heart. “I don’t speak Nepali but a lot of smiles and laughter go a long way in communication. This is something we can all remember in our daily lives.”

Mark Pearce
GC&M News was recently contacted by Maleny local Mark Pearce to let us know about the upcoming screening of ‘Pilliga Rising’, a documentary produced by his award-winning production company Balangara Films for The Wilderness Society. Knowing that Mark and his wife Louisa had relocated to Maleny just over 12 months ago we thought readers would like to know a little more about his story. What made you move to Maleny? My wife, Louisa and I moved from Melbourne to Maleny with our chickens and cats when Louisa was offered a job transfer. We decided on Maleny for the rural community lifestyle, coupled with organic living and to be part of a community where people work in cooperation with each another. What inspired you to get into film making? When I was five years old, mum and dad took my sister and me on a working holiday to America. It was the Universal Studios experience and how the magic of movies recreate this thing we call reality that had a lasting impression on me. I unsuccessfully attempted to make two Super 8 films soon after that trip but in my early teens I decided to try acting. I landed some acting roles in my late teens - and my five minutes of fame was an episode in ‘Neighbours’ where I shot and killed Cody. Then the movie theme park thing came full circle in 1993 when I worked as an actor and presenter at Warner Bros Movie World on the Gold Coast. How did you go from acting in ‘Neighbours’ to forming your own production company? I returned to Melbourne in 1995 and worked in my father’s ad agency, coordinating events, press, television and radio commercials, directing studio photography shoots, writing editorials, producing
corporate videos. In 1996 I met Louisa at a week-long summer film making course at Melbourne University and together we produced two short comedy films and a 16mm Stop Motion animation narrative. With that combination of short films and corporate videos, I landed a role at Network Ten in Cairns in 2006 as a television commercial producer. After producing over 150 commercials, I retired from television and worked as a camera assistant on a feature film back in Melbourne. From 2007-2010 I produced 25 educational videos while also working as a corporate video producer and it was during this time I worked with Nick Hayward, the cinematographer who filmed the famous Attenborough lyrebird sequence for ‘Life of Birds’. How did Balangara Films come about? We set up the company in 2010, originally as a sole purpose vehicle for the film ‘The Message of the Lyrebird’. We released the two-minute online trailer to help crowdfund the next stage of production, which led to a flurry of phone calls that had us travelling around the country for Tourism Australia, creating a National Landscapes series. On the back of the tourism project I also produced three campaign films for The Wilderness Society, which played a small part in saving James Price Point in the Kimberley. Over the past three years, I’ve produced humanitarian work with the International Tribunal for Natural Justice (ITNJ). We’ve tackled the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Human Trafficking and Child Sex Abuse, and also the Commission of Inquiry into Weaponisation of the Biosphere (all living life).
Can you give us a bit of the background to ‘Pilliga Rising’? It is a 40-minute documentary that has been produced in response to the proposed Narrabri coal seam gas project in northwest New South Wales. The Wilderness Society Newcastle’s campaign manager Naomi Hodgson contacted me in early 2018 wanting to commission an emotive story that would bring communities together to begin a national conversation around the proposed Narrabri Gas Project. What is your vision from here for future work? My immediate goal is to find a handful of investors and/or bird lovers to help complete the feature-length film, ‘The Message of the Lyrebird’. The film has been edited and we need finishing funds to show the world this mysterious and unique creature. Other than that, I’ll hopefully be producing more social impact films for organisations and I’m moving into the local community service sector with a longer-term aim of creating films for narrative therapy to support individuals through issues that many of us face through life, and then utilise those stories as an educational tool.

Volunteers working for Charity Sports
Do you know that the best place to pick up quality produce at a bargain price is at the volunteer stalls at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival? All proceeds from these stalls go directly to the fundraising total from the charity carnival for the Cancer Council Queensland. The ever-popular produce stall (organised by Jan Cheal for almost 48 years) offers farm-fresh produce, jams and chutneys, and the famous strawberry pavlovas. Then there is the mouth-watering display at the cake stall. Local ladies will be baking all week to ensure that we have an abundant supply of homemade cakes and goodies. But you have to get there early as they are sold as fast as they hit the counter. The plant stall offers a great array of pot plants and seedlings, all suited to the local climate as they are produced by local gardeners.
Robyn Edwards does a fantastic job coordinating the drinks and luncheon stall, with the help of the Beerwah Lions Club and Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade. This is always a very busy stall, with customers well fed from a quality menu. Most of the stall volunteers have been working regularly at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival for many years, and look forward to seeing you again when you are shopping at the sports day this year.

Now in its 14th year, the annual Welcome to Maleny and District Dinner will be held on Wednesday, September 18 at the Maleny Showgrounds pavilion. The event is hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club and will feature a delicious buffet meal catered by The Orangery Maleny and will include four guest speakers from local community groups, who will speak about the things they do and the support they give to the community. Reaping the benefits of natural oils The use and benefits of tea tree oil can be traced back to early use by Indigenous Australians, whose early use of the plant included using crushed leaves mixed with mud for their antiseptic and antifungal properties. While they had relished the benefits of the plant for thousands of years, it wasn’t until the early 1920s that their antiseptic properties were researched and introduced into mainstream medicine. Nowadays, the benefits of tea tree oil are used in a variety of different ways and The Healthy Guru stocks a large range of products with tea tree and other natural oils. While its antibacterial properties are well known, tea tree oil is also widely used as a cleaning agent. However, as Denese Brookes, owner of The Healthy Guru, says, its benefits are so much more than that. “Tea tree oil has excellent antibacterial, antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties and is a very versatile product,” she said. “It can be used as a cleaning product, an air purifier, used in skin and hair care and as a natural healing agent.” The Health Guru stocks a wide range of products by Thursday Plantation, which includes a hair care range, body wash, deodorant, antiseptic spray and balm, as well as the original tea tree oil, which is often used to help fight infection. Denese recommends when using the oil topically to always use a carrier oil and, as with any new product, test for a reaction first. Thursday Plantation oils are 100% pure and natural, free from SLS, synthetic parabens and fillers or additives, and Denese says that providing customers with pure and natural products is really important. “It’s really important to us here at The Healthy
Guru that we’re offering products that provide a real benefit to our customers,” she said. “The added benefit, of course, is that Thursday Plantation is an Australian-owned company.” Other oils in the Thursday Plantation range include arnica oil, which is great for relieving swelling and inflammation, lavender oil, known for its calming effects, and peppermint oil, which is great for relieving headaches. They are great additions to add to your bath at the end of the day! For dry and irritated skin, macadamia oil is a highly hydrating oil and is the key ingredient in Thursday Plantation’s skin care line, which Denese says is fantastic in hydrating dry, itchy skin with the range of body and face oil, and lip balm suitable for sensitive skin. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of incorporating natural oils into your daily life – whether it be through skin and hair care, as an antiseptic or general daily use – The Healthy Guru will be hosting an in-store promotional day on August 15. Top End Wedding
Who doesn't love a feel-good escape from the grimness of the daily news that bombards us? Well, that's what you'll get with ‘Top End Wedding’. Directed by Indigenous writer and actor Wayne Blair (‘Redfern Now’ and ‘Mystery Road’), this entertaining Australian film comes from the team who delighted us with ‘The Sapphires’ in 2012. Miranda Tapsell (co-writer of the script) is successful Sydney lawyer Lauren who is engaged to Ned, played by Gwilym Lee (‘Midsomer Murders’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’). Together they plan a dream wedding in the Northern Territory. However, as in all good comedies, things don't go to plan. Lauren's mother has gone missing. Consequently, the audience is taken on a delightful, amusing exploration of stunning northern landscapes - including the Tiwi Islands - in the couple's quest to locate the missing matriarch. Incidentally, local tourist authorities are delighted with the showcasing of the north's spectacular scenery, expecting an increase in tourism numbers. An amiable Aussie comedy with a predictably happy ending! When: Saturday, August 10, matinee 2.30pm (doors open 2pm), evening 7.15pm (doors open 6pm) Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street, Maleny Food and drinks: Matinee tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, drinks available from the bar. Term three might only just be under way but local Glass House Mountains children starting school in 2020 have already been given the opportunity to get ready for their move to big school. Last week the team at Glass House Mountains State School hosted their annual Early Years Expo, which gives both the children and their parents an insider view of what happens at big school. School principal Elizabeth Blomkamp said it was wonderful for parents to come to the school and see for themselves what a great environment the school offered. Many of the parents were keen for their children to become part of a school that had a country town feel, Ms Blomkamp said. There was plenty for the kids with face painting, making fruit kebabs, water play, painting, maths and literacy activities, puppets, butterflies, sand pit play, making fairy bread and a crown, as well as tennis, martial arts and, of course, a sausage sizzle. School parent and P&C member Elise Morgan said she had really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the day. I am very proud that my children have been able to attend the same school as their grandfather and his siblings and I love being able to be involved in the school, so I see first-hand how it works.

A couple of the highlights for next year’s preppies were seeing the older students’ musical performance, as well as meeting the school’s mascot Boost, a rather friendly bearded dragon, and, of course, checking out their school uniforms. The event is great way for locals who aren’t familiar with the school to see what an inviting environment the school has, its facilities and to introduce them to the dedicated team of staff who work there. If you are looking at enrolling your child in 2020 and missed out on the expo there will be a onehour parents information session on September 5 from 5.30pm, or you can phone the school during office hours to find out more on 5439 3222.

Ruth and her team nominated the Mooloolah Public Hall and were thrilled when it was announced that the hall would receive a grant. “We think the Mooloolah hall is a wonderful asset and a very worthy recipient. The hall supports so many other local community groups and provides a brilliant space for the Mooloolah community to come together. “We appreciate the support of our local community and it’s wonderful to be able to give back – in this case by supporting our local hall,” Ruth said. Bev Smith of the Mooloolah Public Hall Association said the hall committee members were thrilled that they had been awarded the donation and plan to put the funds towards their annual Christmas carols event. “We really appreciate the support that Ruth and the pharmacy team have shown us by nominating the Mooloolah Public Hall for this community contribution,” Bev said. Bucking good times at Mooloolah Rodeo By Sonia Clark
Following the huge success of last year's event, the annual Mooloolah Rodeo is fast becoming a must do drawcard for both locals and visitors. Now in its fourth year, the event on Saturday, August 17 will again be held at the Mooloolah Pony Club Reserve (Way Street) and it promises to be even bigger and better than ever! Presented by the Mooloolah Valley Country Club and supported by local sponsors, gates open at 4.30pm until late, with the rodeo excitement kicking off at 5.30pm sharp. Event organiser Shona Hume said she was thrilled that community interest was so great in the rodeo. Since the event started in 2015, it had not only improved each year but was now bigger, better and more popular far and wide, she said. “We are so proud to be a family friendly, locally run event that also gives back to our community. This is a major fundraiser for the Mooloolah State School, which we are so pleased to support, as well as being an awesome night out,” Shona said. The main event is bullriding in three categories - open, novice and junior as well as a saddle broncs event. Local father and son team Ian and Jacob Day (aka Team Day) will wow the crowds and a licensed bar will operate until late. After the rodeo events, a live band will play into the night with a great spread of food to fill hungry bellies. More details via the Mooloolah Rodeo Facebook page or www.mooloolahrodeo.org. Pre-paid tickets are available from www.stickytickets.com.au. Gate prices are $15 for children and $25 for adults. There are no family tickets.
Cemetery re-dedication
Beerburrum State School held its annual cemetery re-dedication service at the Beerburrum Soldier Cemetery last week. The service is held each year to remember the area’s soldier settlers and their link to the school as they fought hard to have a place for their children to be educated. The annual service continues due to the ongoing partnership that exists between RSL representatives Leo Petrie and Beerburrum State Brian Machin plant a tree School, Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch and Sunshine Coast Council. School leaders read a poem written by the son of an early soldier settler describing the difficulties that were faced living on the plots of land leased to the soldiers at the end of World War I. School captains Riley and Felicity (pictured) were assisted to plant and water a native grass tree (to celebrate National Tree Week) by state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and local councillor Rick Baberowski.

Community Groups Sharing warmth and security Sunshine Linus Inc is a 100% volunteer nonprofit organisation with talented and dedicated members from across the Sunshine Coast, including Glasshouse Country ladies. Their mission is to provide quilts and other comforts to the needy in the community. The group endeavours to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children and adults who are seriously ill, traumatised or otherwise in need through the gift of new homemade comforts such as quilts and blankets, lovingly created by volunteers. Group members are currently busy planning for their biennial open day on Saturday, August 17 from 9.30am–2.30pm at the Uniting Church hall in Nambour and are keen to share their work with interested community members. On the day there will be displays of their 100+ quilts and specialty items as well as trading tables, raffles and morning tea. Entry is just $5. The members also provide much needed support to hospital wards, oncology units, maternity nurseries, nursing homes and care associations such as Foster Parents, Education Queensland Special Schools, Disability Queensland and Autism Queensland. The group meets on the last Monday of the month at the Nambour Uniting Church from 9.30am-2pm where the volunteers coordinate the donations of fabrics and other supplies, creating kits for their home-based volunteers and determining where their help is most needed in our community.
Bringing the past into the present
Group members Lorraine Mann and Liz Kerr The group always welcomes visitors and new members but there are plenty of other ways you can assist their wonderful work via sponsorship and donations. They appreciate donations of patchwork fabrics, wools and any sewing resources you can give and, of course, cash is much appreciated as this allows them to purchase batting for the quilts. The Uniting Church hall in Nambour is located at 37 Coronation Avenue (opposite Nambour High School), with parking and entry off Donaldson Street. If you would like to know more about the group you can check their blog sunshinelinusgroup.blogspot.com or email sunshinelinus@gmail.com.
Locals who grew up in Landsborough or had lived there for many years, as well as the more recently arrived, gathered at the Landsborough Museum to listen to a conversation with Slim Moroney (pictured). Slim shared some enlightening and amusing stories of his 66 years living in Landsborough. The vibrant conversations continued over a cuppa and delicious morning tea. All who attended enjoyed the opportunity to get together at the event organised by Diana Michael from Landsborough Love Where We Live and the Landsborough Museum.

Lions begin new fiscal year The July dinner meeting marked the beginning of a new financial year for the Beerwah Lions Club. The well attended meeting was led by the club’s new president Alistair Waddell, who was able to report that everything was going well. Guest speaker for the evening was Lion Max Pinwill, who entertained the meeting with an account of the recent record attempt, which included three Beerwah Lions families, for the largest parade of caravans and recreational vehicles (RVs) to travel in convoy. The event was organised by the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club and Barcaldine Regional Council and travelled on a quiet country road near drought affected Barcaldine. There were 863 vans in the convoy that stretched for nine kilometres.
Although the organisers are unsure at this stage if the event will find its way into the Guinness Book of Records, they are confident that a procession of LED rope lights, which stretched for more than six kilometres, will establish a new record. The Beerwah Lions are also formulating plans for their participation in the upcoming Beerwah Charity Sports Day. As well as cooking the barbeque lunch, the Lions are sponsoring class one in the photography competition. The winner of this class will not only receive $100 in cash but will also have the honour of seeing their photograph on the front cover of the next Lions Business Directory. Entry forms are available at all local pharmacies and the Maleny Newsagency.

In order to continue this good work, the group is looking for volunteers to join us - particularly those who have an interest in or are willing to learn about local flora. We are looking for people to gather seeds at appropriate times, process them, sow, prick out seedlings into tubes and grow them through to transplant stage. Plants are then used for revegetation of local areas and sold to the public and to conservation groups. We are looking at re-establishing our work site to an area adjacent to the Beerwah Recycle Centre. The potting group currently meets once a week, on a Monday morning from 8am, for a few hours and finishes up with a cuppa and a chat. If you are interested or would like further information please contact either Eddy on 0438 584 249, Vikki on 0491 110 139 or email GMAN on ghmgman@gmail.com.
Peachester Garden Club
The club met at the Glass House Mountains lookout, a lovely spot to enjoy nature and a picnic lunch on a beautiful day. After negotiating some roadworks on the way back, members visited the lovely garden of Maurie and Estelle in Glass House Mountains. The number and variety of plants were quite amazing and lots of colourful foliage more than made up for the lack of flowers at this time of the year. This was followed by afternoon tea, which was an unexpected bonus. Members were able to collect cuttings and plants to take home. The club thanked the hosts for inviting members to their stunning garden and Pam Innes for arranging the visit. Results of the competition bench for July were first to Trish Bradford on 20 points and second to Pam Innes on 15 points. The next meeting is on Thursday, August 15 in the garden of Coral Beutel. Probus Glasshouse Mountains
A recent highlight for the group was a fun-filled expedition to Amamoor, travelling to Gympie and back on The Rattler. On board were visitors from a number of countries so there were plenty of people to converse with along the way. Lunch was at the old railway station at Gympie with tables set up on the platform with genuine white linen tablecloths and real cutlery. The club congratulated Gympie for an imaginative use of the former station. After lunch members were back on the train for the return journey. The weather was magnificent, which added to the fun. Following the trip the craft interest group were stitching and sketching while sharing stories. The week was capped off with lunch at the Mooloolah Valley Country Club. In Glasshouse Country there is no need for any retiree to be bored. The Probus Club sets out to enjoy friendship and fun with peers. While some enjoy fun by the truckload there is every opportunity for individuals to decide which special interest groups suit them best. Why not give it a try. The club’s next meeting is at the Glasshouse RSL hall, 1 Reed Street on August 14 at 10am. For more information contact Norma on 5439 0446.
Glasshouse Orchid Society
The society has certainly had a very busy July, including hosting 35 fellow orchid enthusiasts from Bundaberg, who spent two days trekking around the district. They spent time at a number of members’ homes looking at shade houses and purchasing a few plants on the way. Two Glass House members gave very informative talks on growing cymbidiums and chysis. Members Frank and Barbara Lorrimer had their beautiful Cattleya Rlc Goldenzelle orange pumpkin awarded a highly commended certificate (HCC) by the Australian Orchid Council. A HCC requires an orchid to earn between 75 and 80 points, which this one easily did. The club is holding its AGM on Thursday, August 8, at the RSL hall in Glass House. Be at the hall around 7pm for a 7.30 start. The society hopes to see you there.

Business News Grants available for small business Applications are open for grants for small and medium sized businesses to support more local Queensland companies to grow and create more jobs. Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman announced that Queensland businesses could apply for the latest round of grants from the Small Business Entrepreneur Grants Program and from the Business Growth Fund. “We want to help kick start our local businesses in their early stages and continue to support them to grow sustainably with expert advice and support,” Ms Fentiman said. “Our entrepreneur grants assist some of our state’s newest small businesses by giving them the vital support they need when they are just starting out with grants of up to $5,000.” Past recipients of the grants have used the funds to engage a business consultant to improve sales and profitability. “Our Business Growth Fund targets small and medium sized businesses who are already established and looking to take their businesses to the next level with funding of up to $50,000,” Ms Fentiman said. “To make it easier for small businesses to apply for our fantastic grants we are also releasing our schedule for upcoming grants for this financial year,” she said. “This is based on feedback I heard while meeting with local business owners across the state as part of my small business budget roadshow recently. “We want to make it as easy as possible for more businesses to apply for our grants so we can help them to grow and create more jobs.” Upcoming business grant funding is open for three grants for Small Business Artisan Producers, with applications closing on August 22, and the Small Business Entrepreneur Grants, which close on August 30. The Business Growth Fund will remain open until the budget is fully allocated. Another round of the Small Business Digital Grants will open on November 11 and close on December 10. Great teamwork pays off
The War on Waste Glasshouse Country group (WOWGC) is on a mission to reduce waste locally by spreading positive and useful messages, advocating for change and hands-on action. There are 12 businesses in Beerwah Marketplace and Beerwah Village shopping centre that sell take-away drinks, so WOWGC was keen to see customers given a recycling option. Thanks to some great team work between Beerwah Marketplace management, the Scout Recycling Centre, along with WOWGC team members there are now four red bins dedicated to the recycling of drink containers in place at the shopping centre. There is one bin between Fresh & Save and CJ’s Bakery, one between Mrs Browns and Kebab Haven, one outside Banjos and another outside Smokey’s Chargrill. The bins have been in place for over a week and WOWGC spokesperson Hanna Brandli said she was pretty chuffed seeing the final product. Hanna has already checked on the bins and people are definitely using them, which is great. Hannah said the containers would be collected by Scout Recycling as required and they will provide a payment back to the WOWGC group, who plan to use the funds for other community initiatives.
Hannah and Lorraine checking that shoppers have been using the new bins Lorraine Cooper, who works for the shopping centre management, will monitor and empty the bins, and is keen to ensure they are in the best possible locations for shoppers.

Hinterland Families Great success for dancers
Planting for djandurr
Contributed by Sarah Kwarcianyi The performance teams from Masterpiece Dance had some great success at recent competitions. The 10 years and 14 years troupes practise weekly and recently competed at their fifth eisteddfod for the year with some great results. Most recently they performed at Everybody Sing and Dance Now and between the two teams they came away with two firsts, two seconds and two thirds. The 10 years troupe team joined groups from across the Sunshine Coast and beyond to travel to Gympie to perform and walked away with a first place in contemporary and second place in jazz, which was definitely their strongest performance of the year so far. These girls show great commitment to weekly practise and continue to improve. Most importantly they have formed amazing close friendships and work well as a team, which shows on stage. A big congratulations also goes to Caitlin, Amelia, Grace and Taylah, who came first in their duos, and to Taylah who also received a highly commended for acrobatics and contemporary.
I love seeing the performance teams grow and improve each year and gain valuable skills along the way.

The end of tree planting week was celebrated at Peachester State School on Friday, July 26. This year’s planting theme was dedicated to the yellow-tailed black cockatoo, or djandurr in Jinibara language. Each child from Peachester State School planted a food tree for djandurr, which is the school’s treasured emblem. Tree species that the djandurr love to crunch on are Banksia spinulosa, river oak, forest oak and hovea. Throughout the day children worked alongside Jinibara people - Uncle Noel, Jason and BJ - with a focus on Indigenous language, Jinibara culture and activities of flintKuljan getting spearing BJ knapping and from tips throwing spear throwing. In the afternoon the children welcomed their parents in Jinibara language Yadda Yadda with an acknowledgement to Jinibar country. Uncle Noel delivered a timely message on this year’s NAIDOC theme of Voice, Truth and Treaty and referred to the catch phrase “Don’t keep history a mystery”. The day finished with the school community and attending families walking through the school’s Indigenous forest walk to see their new trees and delight in the growing beauty of this jewel of the school.
STAR students at Beerburum Beerburrum School recently took part in the Sunshine Coast Council’s STARS waste audit training sessions. STARS stands for Strategies Towards Active Resource Sustainability. The program provides schools with free guidance, advice, training, infrastructure and resources that engage students to implement more sustainable waste practices and change the school’s culture to become more resourceful. The session’s presenter guided the children through what’s recyclable in a very entertaining and engaging manner. It was well received with everyone, including staff, learning some new facts on recycling. An astounding visual showed how much rubbish today’s average family household creates.
The children sat in the outdoor classroom to listen to Uncle Noel
Beerburrum School is looking forward to holding its waste audit, which will call on students’ mathematic and thinking/memory skills. The school thanked the council for this great initiative.
The school thanked Mrs Dorothy Robb for her total devotion to the project and all that it contributes to the wellbeing of the students through the gift of nature, which Peachester State School abounds in. The school also thanked Peachester Sawmill for donations of sawdust and timber stakes, and Barung Landcare and Mooloolah River Landcare for donations of tree tube stock.

Early Years Expo fun Last week team members from Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre were thrilled to participate in the Early Years Expo at Glass House Mountains State School. The day featured a heap of child-focused activities with Silvia and Amber having a great time face painting with the children and chatting with families. Expo highlights were meeting friendly new faces and seeing children who had previously attended the centre as little ones now helping lead the prep and year 1 groups. The festive atmosphere continued throughout the expo with Amber’s face-painting skills in high demand – luckily, she loves being creative, as it was an extremely popular drawcard.

As part of their commitment to exceptional child care services, Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre offers a number of inclusions as part of its daily fees. One of these popular additional services is the centre’s bus service managed by long term staff member, Wendy Dwyer. Assistant educator Wendy has been with the centre for over eight years and is a very familiar face in the local community. While Wendy helps out in all the rooms, she is best known as the friendly face of the centre's bus service. The service has developed over the past few years from occasional use to a bustling daily pickup and drop off service that has provided vital assistance to busy families. Wendy said that when she first started, the bus service was just a small part of what the centre offered and it was not used as much as it is now. “We soon realised that families needed help so we offered the pickup and drop off service,” Wendy said. “People often have to get to work early or some families don’t have access to a second car so our bus service really helps.” The centre bus operates a daily school run and home pickup service. For working parents, children can be dropped off at the centre from 6.30am and Wendy will organise the school run drop off to Glass House, Beerburrum and Beerwah state schools, as well as to Glasshouse Christian College. Following the school run, Wendy then does the home run for younger children attending the centre.
The same service runs in the afternoons with Wendy driving to the local schools to pick up the children requiring after school care and dropping the younger children home. As well as the convenience for families, one of the best things about the service is that there is no additional charge. Generally, the service operates in approximately a 10km radius, although if there is a family outside that area who requires assistance Wendy and the team will do whatever they can to try to accommodate that family’s needs. “I must say that I really enjoy driving the bus every day. I like to give 100% every day and it’s nice to pick up the children who always seem pleased to see me,” Wendy said. “We are all mothers here and I think that makes a difference to how we relate to the children – we are genuinely interested in them and really care about their safety.” People often see the centre bus around the local schools and driving around, and Wendy feels that people really appreciate the service to the local community it offers. For an obligation free tour of the centre or to find out more about availabilities, just drop in (no appointment necessary) or call 5438 7311. 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains.

Music Today
Why take up a musical instrument? On Monday nights we will hold a songwriting workshop in Eudlo and I have had a few inquiries from people who don’t play an instrument but are interested in songwriting. My advice is to start playing one, even if it is just the lyric side of songwriting that is your passion. The easy part with ukulele, for example, is in getting under way and you’ll find that within weeks you can generally play in time and in tune. The more difficult part is to become good at it as that takes a long time and most musicians expect to spend the rest of life getting better at it! So with some discipline - finding 30 or 40 minutes every second day - you’ll get there. But what will it do for you if you are say a lyricist and wanting to leave the musical side to those with whom you collaborate? Well for a start, it will expose you to different sorts of music. At the moment it may be the songs of Burt Bacharach that you aspire to but his music is not for beginner players. So those three chords you are learning will see you playing some simple country ballads, or the songs of Peter, Paul and Mary, and why not? Not being able to rely on music performed wonderfully as an accompaniment to your words will put more emphasis on the quality of your lyrics, and that can only be a good thing. The instrument you take up will also affect what you play and listen to and that of course will play a part in the development of your musical catalogue. The musicians with whom you collaborate now become colleagues. You begin to share their language and can better articulate what it is you are looking for in music to go with your lyrics. The same applies to singers who are dependent on their colleagues to provide their accompaniment. Take up an instrument. You will likely not become as proficient at it as you are as a singer but it will add a lot to your musical experience. Others ask me: “Is it a better idea to just specialise in experimenting with music software that provides the samples (sounds) which I then arrange into my own songs?” My answer is that it will take further time and cost more than you think but if that is your inclination, do it as well as learn an instrument. Both are avenues in the development of you as a musician but playing an instrument allows you to spend more time with people making music, and that is a great thing! They have such a spacious outdoor dining area with plenty of seating you can easily grab a table away from the office and still keep to your agenda. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is, they have plenty of choice and if you are in after 11am for lunch they have some great lunch time specials, which we had served with some very tempting fresh cooked fries and sweet potato chips - that we had to have in the name of research! While we were down at Mrs Browns they mentioned that they were looking forward to their upcoming games night. They are still working on the details of how it will happen but if you love a bit of fun and games you should check their Facebook page to keep updated.

just think about salt water from the ocean. Where I come from, artesian bores supply endless amounts of water to stock. The water comes up from underground and is then channelled out to the paddocks by way of board drains and that water purifies itself over a short distance, so cattle and livestock all drink it, as can you. Think of the jobs, employment, the Australian products used and power supply required - solar can handle that also. If the government is spending money, they are also gaining money back from taxes, which means less dole paid out and people working for a living. And the rivers, lakes and dams will be replenished. Council got it wrong
Needs more thought
Driving around the local townships of Glass House Mountains (which is a very high tourist area) and Beerwah it is great to see reserve land left in estates but they never follow through with maintenance. Dead trees, vines growing over and strangling the healthy ones and large gums hanging over people’s properties. Council has told us on three occasions now that a particular tree needs to come down but here we are three years later and it’s still standing. Also, they need to rethink what type of trees they plant in new subdivisions. We side onto a water retention area and the trees that were planted there are ridiculous. They are so close to fence lines and there are gums and black wattles, which are a menace. We have had to get council out twice within two years as they have come over our side fence. Luckily they didn’t wreck anything. They think nothing of knocking down perfectly healthy trees for parks and subdivisions. but ask them to remove a menace tree - good luck with that! No water, who cares?
Doesn’t anyone care about our dry rivers, lakes and dams? Well it seems that our local federal member either doesn’t read our local paper or couldn’t be bothered responding with an intelligent answer to my concerns about Australia’s lack of water. I see that people on the Sunshine Coast are more interested in rail and traffic problems. They are not concerned one iota about the people living in the outback or along our biggest rivers or near our big lakes and dams that are empty. I see where Cubbie Station at Dirranbandi has been allocated more water. Without having the facts, I think it would be safe to say they are and were the problem with the Barwon River, which becomes the mighty Darling and empties into the Murray. Our federal members don't wish to take water from the Ord River Scheme (which I am told can supply the whole of Australia) or harvest the monsoonal waters of North Queensland because it sounds not only too hard, but extremely costly. Then what about they forget those two ideas and 30
I am writing to inform all my Larikoek Gingerbread customers who have purchased my products previously at the Maleny Markets and over the past 18 months at the Witta Markets, that the Sunshine Coast Council has revoked my commercial kitchen licence. Apparently it was the wrong licence and Caloundra City Council “should never have issued it" 12 years ago. Throughout all of these years I have paid the annual fee and cheerfully welcomed food safety officers to inspect my kitchen. One of those officers regularly buys my gingerbread at the market - how's that for advertising a pristine kitchen! My options are to either build an entirely second new kitchen, separate from the rest of the house, or to rent a local commercial kitchen to do my baking there. Neither of these are going to happen. Even if I had the finances to build it, I don't want a second kitchen encroaching on other areas of my home and I am certainly not going to the inconvenience of baking away from home in a strange kitchen. After talking to family and friends, I have decided that it is not worth my energy to fight this ridiculous turn of events. If I were to fight on it would be for others, such as young women who choose to be stay-at-home mums or those who, due to conditions such as MS, need to be able to rest during the day and therefore prefer to work from home. I will, of course, continue to bake my Dutch gingerbread - I just won't be able to sell it anymore. Those of you who hanker after some gingerbread are welcome to come visit and have a slice with a cuppa - there is always some in the freezer. Maggie de Prinse Beerwah
Telecommunications and 5G
Exciting adverts for new 5G technology and superfast internet have started appearing in the media. There is, however, another side emerging to 5G - a worldwide move against a too-fast rollout of 5G technology without sufficient research on long-term health effects of public exposure to high frequency microwaves. 5G is also there to make the internet of things (IoT) work so that everything electrical can talk to everything else you own and record. In February 2019 US Senator Richard Blumenthal raised concerns at a public hearing over the lack of any scientific data on the technology's potential health risks on the future impacts of 5G wireless technology. The senator asked wireless industry representatives if they have supported research on the safety of 5G technology and links between radiofrequency (RF) and cancer, and the industry reps conceded they have not. In May in NZ the chair at Waiheke Local Board Auckland Council Cath Handley wrote to Auckland
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519
Council's environment committee calling for an independent safety assessment of 5G. Professor Susan Pockett of Auckland University said radiofrequency emissions were linked to many health problems. "Approximately 600 peer-reviewed research reports from a range of international scientists show us that radiofrequency radiation is linked to infertility, diabetes, various cancers and psychiatric disorders. The present situation is already bad and adding 5G on top of it will hugely increase the amount of radiation to which everyone is exposed making it worse," she said. Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said there was "significant community concern" over the new 5G technology and the council voted to refuse 5G. In India prominent scientists publicly warn that 5G could pose health hazards (The Hindu Business Line, July 28, 2019). Several other countries and councils around the world are now halting 5G. It’s now obvious a full discussion of any risks from 5G needs to be had in the public arena. Richard Giles Conondale
Wallaby/roo deaths unacceptable
I value our wildlife in Crystal Waters but it seems there are people who don't. I was shocked and saddened to learn that there has been another victim of a hit and run incident in Crystal Waters. Not only did the mother die but so did her joey because nobody would stop to help her! This is meant to be a safe haven for wallabies and roos so why is this happening here? Our ranger has informed us that there have now been six wallaby/roo deaths in the past seven months - that's one every four and a half weeks. I do not want to see this trend continue so I have written to our Crystal Waters Body Corporate demanding action to prevent any further deaths. I believe there is a lot we can do as a community to slow down traffic, eg, speed bumps, more dips, signs, education, etc. It's not hard to be aware and to have foresight while driving, and quick reflexes are important too. Speed kills both wildlife and humans. What if it was your child that someone hit and left to die? I'm sure you would feel anger and rage. Well that's what I felt for days when I found out that one of my pet wallabies was left suffering and in pain! Please, if you hit and injure any wildlife while driving, STOP your car, check on the animal or bird. Check if there's a baby in the pouch. If you don't know what to do, you can phone the Wilvos emergency hotline who are trained for these such incidents on 5441 6200 or check the information on their website www.wilvos.org.au. You can also contact Australia Zoo wildlife emergency hotline on 1300 369 652. If you are in Crystal Waters, you can also try phoning our ranger, Barry O'Connell on 5494 4726 or Tom Nealson on 5494 4590. Make our wildlife your priority, not your busyness. We are losing them at a rapid rate. Kim Rosenberg Crystal Waters Conondale
Consideration goes both ways
I was driving on Old Landsborough Road at 6.20am on Saturday, July 27 and was surprised to see two bike riders riding two abreast on the road beside the cycle lane. I wonder if you ever complain about motorists not considering your safety. Well it needs to works both ways. In this instance it seems just plain ignorant to other road uses that you wouldn’t use the cycle lane when there is one provided. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

State Member for Caloundra Community’s historic caravan park at Pumicestone Passage sold
In 2016 Caloundra lost freehold title to one of our most valuable pieces of land. The Tripcony/Hibiscus Caravan Park has deep historic ties to our region and until 2016 it belonged to the people of this region. It has recently come to light that the then Labor state government signed off to convert the caravan park’s lease from leasehold to freehold and sold it, just eight years after promising it would remain as public land for the next 30 years. On April 27, 2008, Premier Anna Bligh and Minister Craig Wallace announced that one of the state’s oldest coastal camping grounds would be retained so Queensland families could continue to enjoy affordable beach holidays on the Sunshine Coast. Not only was this caravan park sold off without the people of Caloundra being consulted, the current state government will not disclose how much money they made from the sale. There was no legal requirement that the public be notified of the decision to sell but by God there was a moral obligation. This is not the fault of the new owner. They made a business decision that was right for them. However, this is an historic piece of land that was gifted to the people of Caloundra by the Tripcony family and the people will never get this land back.

Landsborough Pool Supplies celebrating 15 years! Ron and Jan Horne along with two of their daughters, Dee and Ally, and family friend turned employee Leila Josey, celebrate 15 years of business at Landsborough Pool Supplies this month. Ron and Jan are long-time locals having lived in the area more than 30 years, with Leila also growing up in the area. Before buying the business they both worked in the health industry. The couple like to say they have gone from looking after people’s health to now looking after pool health! Landsborough Pool Supplies is a genuine family owned and run business as Ron and Jan not only have their daughters involved but also their three granddaughters work and help out in the store. Since taking over the business in 2004, their client base has expanded from 30 to well over 100 regular call out service customers per month, in addition to numerous everyday pool maintenance queries and callouts. They also enjoy seeing their regular drop-in clients who come to them for advice and supplies. The couple genuinely love this area and over the
past 15 years they are pleased to have forged not just great working relationships with their clients, but some real lifelong friendships. Ron says everyone knows when they come into the store that not only can they get everything they need for their pools and spas, along with maintenance tips, they will often walk away with great fishing advice from Ron, pet and animal advice from Ally, and sports and kids advice from Dee and Leila. “As well as all that - we are really good at fixing pools!” laughs Dee. Jan said that they service clients from all around the local community as well as the greater Sunshine Coast region, through Buderim and Nambour, out to Conondale, Kiel Mountain and beyond. She said that they will happily go to Woop Woop and beyond for their clients. “We love that many of our clients had originally lived in the local area but still want our team to continue looking after them in their new homes,” Jan said. She says the team can assist with everything to do with pool and spa care - from equipment install and repairs, breakdowns, supply and install of cleaners, blankets, general chemicals and accessories, as well as free water testing in store. “We pretty much look after everything except the actual building of your pool or spa! If we don’t have something that you need, we’ll source it for you. You can even bring in a photo or a small piece of broken equipment as Ron, Ally and Leila are really good at identifying exactly what it is you need to fix,” Jan said.
Ally says they pride themselves on offering good honest advice and they don’t believe in trying to sell clients extra stuff they don’t need. “We are definitely no frills but our competitive prices and years of knowledge are what people keep coming back for,” Ally said. To celebrate 15 years, Pool Pro has donated an Acrobat GT pool cleaner valued at $399 to be given away. To win this awesome prize, every sale over $20 gets one entry into the draw (in store only, one entry per customer per day). The giveaway runs from August 1-31. As well as the promotional giveaway there is a special ‘buy one get one half price’ offer on 5L hydrochloric acid.

Home Cob comeback a winner!
By Sonia Clark The design and unique construction of a Mediterranean inspired eco cob cottage in Maleny recently won two awards at the 2019 Building Designers’ Association of Queensland state awards. The two-bedroom cottage, Cobhearthome, was built using local and salvaged materials. It won awards in the categories of Sustainable building design – residential and Best small home (gross floor area under 150m2) at the gala awards night held in Brisbane on July 20. The cottage, designed by Brett Grimley from Ecolibrium Designs at Eumundi, was constructed from cob (earth construction) and second-hand materials. Brett said he was particularly pleased with the award as the client was incredibly passionate and motivated.
&
Backyard
“The house is not only a beautiful home, it also ticks so many boxes from a sustainability and affordability point of view, and is now a sought-after Airbnb destination,” Brett said. Cob construction is an ancient time-honoured building technique that uses natural and sustainable materials mixed together such as clay, sand and straw. Although inexpensive, the process of creating cob construction is extremely labour intensive and time consuming but yields stunning artistic and sculptural results. Cob is created by repeatedly mixing the material (often by stomping) to create a malleable product that can be moulded to create walls and structures. Cob is built in layers, which requires patience waiting for the previous layer to part-dry before any additional layers can be added. As well as being an Airbnb destination, Cobhearthome also features on other accommodation sites. It is described by the owner as part cob, part contemporary construction. The owner is proud of the home’s unique construction, which includes characterful salvaged materials, and its eco-friendly credentials, which are further
boosted by using interesting recyclables including timber from Brisbane’s Brett’s Wharf and more localised finds such as doors from the old Maleny Community Centre. To find more about this unique local building search for Cobhearthome – Maleny.

Keep your gutters clean
Cleaning gutters is an unpleasant task at any time of the year but in preparation for the fire season it is important to ensure that your gutters are free of debris that can become a fire hazard. Leaf Shield Gutter Protection’s Leafmesh prevents the build up of leaves and other blockages, stops embers from getting underneath the roof and gives you peace of mind that your gutters are free from leaves and debris throughout the fire season. The heavy duty polyethylene product has been engineered to suit Australia’s harsh conditions and has UV stabilisers to retain strength and colour. It can be fixed to both tiled and steel roofs and comes with a 15-year guarantee. As well as preventing a build up of leaves, Leafmesh also helps keep rats, snakes, birds, possums and other pests from gutters. This improves the quality and sanitation of water and because the flow is unrestricted by blockages more water ends up in the tank, which is vital with today’s water shortages and restrictions. Installing the Leafmesh system removes the hassle and danger of having to get on the roof and clean the gutters yourself. It’s a multi-purpose solution for an everyday problem. The Leaf Shield consultants will visit your property to measure and quote the most appropriate gutter mesh for your particular roof or leaf type. They also offer a free gutter clean prior to installation. Call 1300 362 246 to arrange a free measure and quote from one of their experienced gutter guard specialists.

In the Garden Painting tips from Anthony at Beerwah Paint Place Are you tired of looking at those walls and ceilings with the peeling paint, the 1990s colour scheme, the dirty marks and the dodgy patch jobs?
Anthony Austin with Dave Ebdon
Maybe it’s time to freshen up the look and bring your home into the 21st century. It’s as easy as a new lick of paint. Last week, Anthony Austin and the team at the Beerwah Paint Place on Simpson Street moved into their new digs ... just a couple of doors up from where they have been for years. You can’t miss them now - it’s the big bright yellow shop on the corner of Simpson Street and Pine Camp Road. The new layout is great. It’s open and bright and the colour and design creativity area gives you lots of ideas for your project. However, like any project, you don’t just jump in and start slapping on the paint. If you want to get that professional look finish, you need to think like a pro. Take it from Anthony, most of the mistakes are made even before a brush or roller hits the wall. Here’s Anthony’s top ten tips before you start painting: 1. Colour selection: Choosing the right colours is everything. Use the take-home colour charts available in the store to mix, match and contrast your colours to create the perfect palate. 2. Paint selection: Always use premium quality paint as it covers better, goes on easer and is a more durable finish. 3. How much paint: Measure your area to find the square metreage (length x height) divide by 12 to get average litres per coat.

4. Colour test first: Buy a couple of sample pots and test the colours in different spots to see if the colours work on your surfaces. 5. Brush and roller selection: Same as paint, use good quality tools as they will release the paint more evenly and give a smoother finish. 6. Surface preparation: Make sure the surface is cleaned with appropriate cleaner (sugar soap), fill any imperfections and gaps, and do a light sand. 7. Other supplies: Don’t forget rags, drop sheets, scrapers, sanding blocks, masking tape, sugar soap, just to name a few. 8. Cover up: Cover windows and glass by taping up newspaper to prevent splatter marks. 9. Is it a professional’s job? If you think the job is too big Beerwah Paint Place can recommend great local painters. 10. Painting techniques: To avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge.

with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery
Around the world pollinators are under threat. The best known to us is the honey bee due to their importance in pollinating many of our crops and, of course, the sweet delight that is honey. However, Australia is also home to more than 1,500 species of native bees and there are many other pollinators including species of butterflies, moths, beetles, weevils, wasps and flying foxes to name a few. A year or so ago on Facebook a story did the rounds that was fake but was attributed as coming from David Attenborough. It proposed that we assist starving bees by putting out little containers of sugar water. This was a classic case of social media pop environmentalism at its worst, suggesting that we can solve the problem in five seconds by putting a spoon of sugar out for the bees before quickly getting back to our coffee and screen looking for the next big cause. The irony of the sugar solution is the damage that the production of sugar does to the environment – including bees! Surprise, surprise, bees need flowering plants for all their pollen, nectar, resins and waxes to survive and thrive. To produce sugar we clear or have cleared vast areas of forest that used to produce a mix of flowers throughout the year and then replaced the forest with a grass (sugar cane). We then to put it through an agro-industrial process to produce an energy source that is not only questionable in our diet but a very poor substitute for the nectar from flowering plants. To actually save bees and other pollinators, stop spraying insecticides (they do kill bees) and plant a variety of native groundcovers, shrubs, vines and trees in your gardens and throughout the wider landscape – it’s really that simple. Oh yes… and remember to be wary of pop, easy solutions on Facebook (but I don’t have to tell you that as you’re sensibly reading the paper). In adulthood I attended a number of different drawing groups in the Brisbane area - and even modelled for a couple of them - but it’s been some time since I have attended a regular group. I decided the best option was to simply start a fresh class, although I am calling it a group rather than a class because while I am willing to provide feedback and support, I’ll be there to draw too and I’d like to be able to focus on self-improvement. The materials required are simple and include a board to lean on, paper to make marks on and something to make marks with. Charcoal is traditional but has never been my favourite. I prefer oil pastels, watercolours and ink. A few bulldog clips are always handy. Drawing the human form is endlessly challenging, always interesting and simply the best way to get better at drawing people in any pose. This is a trial run of four sessions held fortnightly on Mondays starting August 12 with an expectation to continue on from there if there’s sufficient interest. When: August 12, 6–8pm Where: Maleny Community Centre verandah room Cost: $25 per session or $95 for four. BYO drawing materials Find the group on Facebook facebook.com/lifedrawingmaleny or email lifedrawingmaleny@gmail.com
From the churches You can't keep it to yourself Fritz Kreisler, the world-famous violinist, earned a fortune through his concerts but he gave most of it away. During one of his travels, Kreisler discovered an exquisite violin that he desperately wanted to buy but, at that time, was unable to afford. Later when he had the money, it had been sold to a collector. Kreisler went to see the man and plead for the violin but the man said: “No, it's my prized possession. Disappointed, Kreisler said: “Before I leave, could I play it just once before it's consigned to silence? The owner agreed and the great virtuoso filled the room with such music that the collector was moved GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

Rod Jobe Church on the Rise Maleny to tears. Deeply stirred he said: “I have no right to keep this to myself. It's yours, take it into the world and let people hear itâ€?. When God blesses us with something, we need to give it away! This is where meaning, joy and purpose in life comes from. I’ve heard it said if you want a great life “give it awayâ€?! The Bible says in Acts 20:35 â€œâ€Ś remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’.â€? Maya Anglou rightly said: “I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giverâ€?. We all have something to give. Glasshouse Country Bowls
Contributed by Ken Barker Garth Cottrell and Helen Andrews lost to Sally Adams 3–4 in a game of golf croquet on Thursday. Meanwhile, Bev Sockhill and Gillian Bradley, playing golf croquet as well, beat Wallace Roy 6–4. Donna Manning, Vince Carbery and Kath Smith played a six-ball game of association croquet returning scores of 9, 9, and 8 respectively. Ken Barker, Vince and Kath played another six-ball game on Sunday with Ken scoring three hoops, Vince 14 and Kath nine. Well done Vince. Donna, Vince and Ken played Caloundra at Caloundra on Wednesday. Ken lost to Murray Tinker 3–23. In the doubles Vince and Ken lost to Murray and Fred van Vugt 7–16. Our only winner on the day was Donna who managed a fine save to beat Eric Cree 16–15. Well done to Caloundra who were too good on the day, winning the round, two games to one. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, July 31: We played the New Zealand touring party from Playaway Tours. Like last year, it was a great afternoon with our friends from New Zealand with a lovely lunch at Club Glass House. There were 27 Kiwis and 25 of our club members who took to the green and played two games of ten ends of triples with two rinks of fours. Only three teams finished with two wins. Thanks to Jim and Dennis for their assistance. Thursday, August 1: Winners were Mac Townson and Rob Scullion with two wins + 31 and winners of the losers were Kevin Cook and Doug Sweedman with + 19 in the second game. Lucky draw went to Di Hume and Rae Farrell. Friday, August 2: Division three - Ladies pennant, round seven vs Kilcoy. A 14 shot win for Chris Dougan’s team but a 16 shot loss for Chris Freshwater’s team gave us an overall loss by two. Saturday, August 2: Men’s pennant - division five home to Pine Rivers saw a two rinks to one win for our boys with both Barry Kirk and Rob Scullion’s teams having wins giving us a overall win. Bongaree (who sit at the top of the table) next week. Division ten away to Banyo saw a 23all draw for Rodney Dick’s team and a 23-15 win for Warren Blackbourne’s team, keeping our boys in the top three. Division 11 home to Aspley was a strong win on both rinks with Jimmy Tatum’s team up 24-7 and John Annakin’s team up 2414. Sunday, August 4: Police Bowls Iona Challenge was a relaxing afternoon with 16 police bowlers and 20 members from our club who took part in a game of bowls. The format was 18 ends of three bowl triples. Prizes were presented by Terry and Liz Little who sponsored the day. Our spring carnival - would you believe - is already completely full for this year while still three months out. On paper there are some strong teams as well as a couple of junior teams who will be pushing for the prize money. If anyone can donate a raffle prize please come see me. It will be a fantastic two days of bowls. Sunday coaching is on from 10.30am-12noon.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Beautiful weather, great rallies and good company made for a very enjoyable morning of tennis. Witta Wagtails managed to secure two sets on the day from the Maroochydore TTs but couldn’t match the very experienced skills of the opposition team. Thanks to Gerry Gabriel, Cynthia Garvie, Carol Morris and Jan Maguire. The Wildcats were at home to Nambas Champers. It was a hard slog and very close
Vince presenting the club championship open and second division shields to Ken. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555. Our website is https:// rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. all day. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett did their best but came up one game short! Score was 38-39. The Wikings welcomed Gympie Bronze to Witta on a beautiful tennis day. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Last week teams travelled to Woodford to represent the club. Thanks to all involved. Wednesday night saw the return of a number of bowlers and regular coordinator Miles Allen to this mid- week social competition and a great night of bowls was had by all. Maleny State High has a group coming to the club on Thursday afternoon for bowls. Thanks to the physical education faculty for their efforts with introducing students to lawn bowls. Plans are under way for a primary school group to coordinate an after school activity at the club. The initial monthly final of scroungers was held on Friday. Congratulations to all involved. A reminder to all bowlers involved in championship games to take note of the coordinator’s email about the schedule. The upcoming week sees teams travel to both Mapleton and Kilcoy. Hoping all members take the opportunity to support the club raffle as there are great prizes at a small cost.

Just for Laughs Visiting from the bush
ARIES March 21 - April 20 There is a lucky accent on travel, publishing, learning and self-promotion this week. Your imagination is working overtime and someone is being unrealistic. With Mercury in Leo until the end of the month some emotional confusion sets you wondering about relationships. Just follow and trust your instincts as a lucky break is on the horizon! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 A really good week for you now. Uranus in your sign retrogrades, often resulting in a giddy whirl of both physical and financial activities. You will feel even closer to a loving companion and it is the perfect time to apply a very disciplined focus to business or creative interests. You will see real improvements at the end of this week. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 There is every opportunity for you to meet new people this week. In fact, some new friends may well provide exciting and prosperous ideas that would reap rewards for you. Jupiter turns direct this week and this means expansive, positive energies, especially on all relationships. However, the Moon warns on any new financial arrangements. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Some good news about finances but at the same time emotional complications could bring concerns. Possible celebrations in your work environment directly related to your best efforts and creativity are to be enjoyed. Jupiter, in your sign, goes direct while Uranus retrogrades so you could have some sudden surprises in your social circle.

opened and the man rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the girl and her mother watched the small numbers above light up sequentially. They continued to watch until the last number was reached and they watched some more as the numbers began to light in reverse order. The walls opened up again and a hunky young man stepped out. The mother, not taking her eyes off the young man, said quietly to her daughter: “Go get your father.”

LEO July 23 – August 22 This week has the potential to be a winning week in a very personal way. Certainly time for you to start planning that long overdue holiday! If it is not a holiday then possibly an exciting new romance. Jupiter’s positive position says it’s time to enjoy the earlier plans you previously thought were not possible. Communication is the key now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Early this week you could feel rather tired and restricted. Time to give yourself some rest and comfort. However, just as you do that Jupiter goes direct in your home sector, so any expansive projects speed up! Put your energy into your business dealings. You can really achieve a lot now but watch out for interruptions. Stay focused on goals. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Jupiter’s positive position widens your circle of friends and sees lots of communication involving travel plans. Home interests can run into trouble at this time and people or circumstances could be misleading but benefits can come to you from friends. Venus, your ruler, is kissed by Jupiter this week. Time to be happy and indulge. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 As Jupiter goes direct in Sagittarius this week, you will see many more opportunities for better financial hopes and wishes. However, Uranus in Taurus retrogrades meaning you will be aware of unresolved partnership situations. Set your goals now. You have always enjoyed wisdom and insight and they won’t let you down. Achievements happen!
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Sweet Venus trines your ruler Jupiter, delivering a special day and some exciting news regarding any legal issues or education. Meeting new people and sharing ideas are on the cards but consider things from their point of view before speaking out of turn. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and try different, or just plain exotic! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The Full Moon sits squarely in your ambitious zone, helping you work harder and achieve more success than usual. There is a sense of good fortune and happiness around now, with a burst of energy as Jupiter goes direct, providing financial abundance. Take care of basic financial needs and expectations and take time for self care now. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Take advantage of any opportunity to catch up with old friends, by phone, email or just having a coffee. With Jupiter in its positive position the future is starting to look very bright indeed and friends play a big part in helping you reach your goals now. You may be called on to stand up and support somebody in your life now. Do so graciously. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Jupiter direct can often really give your career a gentle push in the right direction and you may feel a burst of confidence energy and a sense of “I can do anything”! You feel fulfilled and understood often leading to celebrations at work or within your personal relationships. Focus and you can achieve a great result. Long-time friends assist.

A girl and her mother were visiting the city. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, metal walls that could move apart and back together again. The girl asked: “Mother, what is this?” The mother, never having seen a lift, responded: “I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don’t know what it is.” While the girl and her mother watched with amazement, an old man in a wheelchair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls
