Welcome to another
exciting year at the
Glasshouse! Education can be inspiring, engaging and entertaining. At the Glasshouse we strive to provide unique educational experiences that may help transform your students’ learning journey, fire their imagination and provide new ways to interact and reflect on the world around them. In 2017 your students will have the opportunity to engage directly with some of Australia’ leading performing and visual arts companies through performances, workshops and tours. So let’s whisk them away to the notoriously dingy backstreets of 19th century Paris, crawl down an Aussie wombat hole together and visit international warzones with some of Australia’s leading entertainers. With a dazzling array of events for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 – we look forward to you and your students coming on a unique and valuable learning journey like no other in 2017. THEATRES OF WAR: WARTIME ENTERTAINMENT & THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE A touring exhibition by Arts Centre Melbourne
Theatres of War: Wartime Entertainment and the Australian Experience highlights the crucial role played by music and theatre in the lives of Australians from the First World War to Afghanistan. Drawn primarily from Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection, the exhibition explores the power of performance in bringing people together, lifting spirits and offering a form of escapism during times of great adversity. Photographs, scrapbooks, letters, posters and audio-visual material are used to tell stories ranging from concert party performers on the Western Front, female impersonators and opera singers in the jungles of New Guinea, to pop stars taking music from home to Vietnam. Theatres of War: Wartime Entertainment and the Australian Experience is a touring exhibition proudly presented by Arts Centre Melbourne and supported by the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund

THE WITCHES by Roald Dahl Adapted for the stage by David Wood. Re-imagined by Lucas Jervies
Do your clever students think they can outwit a witch and outrun a mouse? Then snap up some seats for your class at The Witches. When one little boy unwittingly stumbles into the annual meeting of witches, he hears their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world – by turning them into mice! It’s going to take smarts and sneakiness to stop them and not get squished in the process. This production will burst onto the stage as a mind-boggling and madcap one-man show. Brave boys and girls are in for a wicked and wonderful time. Lucas Jervies directs this bubbling concoction, based on David Wood’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with one actor running amok in a virtuosic physical performance.

THÉRÈSE RAQUIN adapted from the Emile Zola novel by Gary Abrahams A Dirty Pretty Theatre & Critical Stages Production
Thérèse Raquin is a superb examination of corrupted morals, set in the dingy backstreets of 19th century Paris. Thérèse lives a life of servitude and is married off to her sickly cousin in a loveless, arranged marriage. What follows in this masterpiece of French literature makes for a gripping, corseted thriller. As a new Australian work, Therese Raquin is rare in that it takes a classical text, and without re-contextualising the story manages to create something at once timeless and modern.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is the wonderful story of a family out for walk and on the lookout for a growling bear – they have to march through long swishy grass, wade through thick gloopy mud and even battle a snow storm before entering a big dark cave where maybe they will finally spot the glinty wet eyes of a slobbering, gigantic bear winking at them through the blackness. Thousands of primary, nursery and preschool children have enjoyed We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. Full of rhymes and onomatopoeia, this lively and lyrical stage adaptation features catchy songs and plenty of interactive, hands-on adventure for children of all learning abilities.

OPERATION ART This program encourages students to create artworks for children in hospital. It is an important visual arts exhibition that focuses on creating a positive environment to aid the healing and recovery process of young patients. Over 700 artworks are submitted annually and they are all exhibited at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park. A panel of judges selects 50 artworks for a touring exhibition. These artworks are shown at the Art Gallery of NSW and will also be exhibited in various regional art galleries for a year before returning to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to become part of their permanent collection where they will be hung on the walls alongside other artists of renown. While the exhibition is at the Glasshouse, specialist visual arts workshops will be held for both students and teachers. For more information go to artsunit.nsw.edu.au

BEING TIWI Being Tiwi brings together prints and paintings by nine artists from Australia’s Tiwi Islands. Located to the north of Darwin in the Northern Territory at the juncture of the Arafura and Timor Seas, Bathurst and Melville Islands are home to the Tiwi people – the fiercely independent, culturally unique, traditional owners of the land. ‘Tiwi’ loosely translates as ‘one people’, and island culture is characterised by a shared belief in the need to keep Tiwi customs alive. The artworks in Being Tiwi highlight how contemporary ideas and visual forms connect to and express transformations in culture. Bridging the past and the present, Being Tiwi includes the first prints produced on the islands in 1969 along with work recently acquired for the MCA Collection and new work commissioned specifically for the show. From the intricate to the gestural, and using yellow, red and white ochres sourced from the Islands’ environs, these artworks highlight the distinctiveness of Tiwi iconography. SHAPESHIFTERS: 3D PRINTING THE FUTURE The Australian Design Centre
Shapeshifters is a playful exploration of 3D printing. It’s all about imagination, innovation and new methods of making. In it you’ll find a collection of fascinating objects that embody a sense of excitement with what’s happening in technology and design right now. And the best bit? 3D printing is made for sharing. Open source software and shared maker spaces mean anyone can try their hand at creating. Now mass production is replaced by mass customisation. Forget shopping. Why not download and redesign your own products? So remember, Shapeshifters is just as much about you as it is about the makers. We hope the exhibition inspires you to think differently, and most of all – design playfully. Shapeshifters is an Australian Design Centre Touring Exhibition, developed in partnership with Western Plains Cultural Centre.
