welcome Drums thunder, voices soar, children dance, the orchestra goes virtual, books come to life… welcome to another exciting year at the Glasshouse! Education can be inspiring, engaging and entertaining – and those are the experiences we aim to deliver at the Glasshouse. These are the experiences that can transform a student’s educational journey as they discover new and exciting ways to experience the world around them. In four amazing years, over 25,000 students have participated in workshops, performances, exhibitions and guided tours through the Education @ the Glasshouse Program. In 2014, our Education program is bursting with more music, dance, drama, visual arts, design and history than ever before. We are delighted to provide a range of unique opportunities to engage and learn from some of Australia’s best performing and visual arts companies, artists, curators and educators including Bell Shakespeare, Oz Opera, Sydney Dance Company, TaikOz and more. Don’t forget it’s not just for your primary and secondary students – there are many professional learning opportunities for teachers as well. I look forward to seeing you at the Glasshouse in 2014…

The Open House Project Sydney Opera House The Glasshouse Port Macquarie is working in partnership with the Sydney Opera House through its Education and Young Peoples program to deliver exciting and innovative arts education programs to schools located in the Mid North Coast. In its third year of a three-year partnership, the Open House project enhances the existing education programs at both venues. Students from the Mid North Coast have been able to have access to international artists and performances, previously only available to Sydney audiences. The Open House project connects with the K-12 curriculum, providing best practice performing arts experiences for students and teachers. This will enhance and expand the region’s arts education opportunities and skills base.

Marion Borgelt is a leading Australian artist with a prodigious career spanning some 30 years in the forms of painting, sculpture and installation.
A series of recent digital paintings by Port Macquarie artist Mic Rees. Rees uses iPad and iPhone technology to create his vibrant works that capture the essence of Port Macquarie nightlife.
Shadowline: contemporary drawing 31 January - 9 March An exhibition of recent works by Anne Judell, Nicola Chaffey and Jennifer KeelerMilne. Each artist explores light and shadow within their works and ideas relating to atmosphere, experience and landscape.
ACO Virtual 31 January - 26 February A cutting edge exhibition that puts you in the middle of an Australian Chamber Orchestra’s live performance. Immerse yourself in performances of Bach, Grieg, Smalley and Piazzolla or take charge and explore the Orchestra.

Project Creative: Local Youth Art & Design 7 May – 14 May As part of the 2014 program the Glasshouse is developing a digital exhibition designed to showcase the creative talent of high school students and is seeking art and design works by students to feature in a one week screening in May 2014.
Julie Rrap 16 May - 22 June Julie Rrap’s involvement with body art and performance continues to influence her practice, expanding into photography, painting, sculpture and video.
16 May – 22 June The original inspiration for Ten Thousand Waves was the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004. In response to this event, Julien commissioned the poet Wang Ping to write Small Boats a poem that is recited in the film.
Courage To Care 18 July - 24 August This exhibition is a tribute to the men and women who risked their own lives to save others during World War II. The bravery of these people is at the heart of this exhibition.
Cusp: Designing into the Next Decade 13 September - 15 October
Spirit of Place: Aboriginal Cultural Art Students 16 May – 20 July An exhibition showcasing local Aboriginal art students exploring their local environment, focusing on iconic national parks and reserves. A project run in conjunction with the Sea Acres Rainforest and the Wauchope Institute of TAFE, combining traditional storytelling with a contemporary twist.

A creative program exploring design as a human-centred approach that can enrich the experience of life for individuals, organisations and communities. Ranging from architecture to fashion, object, interactive, system, robotics and sound design, this program will feature twelve visionary Australian designers.

Artexpress 17 October - 7 December ARTEXPRESS is an exhibition of outstanding works by 2013 Higher School Certificate Visual Arts Students from schools in NSW.
16 May - 13 July Presented by Accessible Arts Creating Connections North Coast, this exhibition showcases the work of twelve artists from across the region whose practices and styles are quite diverse but who share a passion and commitment.
Trevelyn Clay 10 October - 30 November Clay takes the tradition of hard-edged abstraction as a starting point, and presents a series of paintings that arrange colour into rows stacked in pictorial space.
Direction Now 27 June - 3 August Direction Now is an exhibition celebrating painting with artists using elements of abstraction such as the lyrical, gesture, texture and objectification to convey as individual expression.
Annette Bezor: Survey 10 October - 30 November One of Australia’s most respected and successful artists. Her painting addresses female sexuality and the politics of gender.

Built using state-of-the-art technology, ACO VIRTUAL features projections of 13 ACO musicians surrounding you on all sides, with the sound of each player coming from the direction of their projection. It’s like standing in the middle of the Orchestra during a concert.

Working with a music educator, students will gain a deeper understanding about the installation, the virtual experience and how music is constructed. This education resource has been developed as an aid for teachers in the instruction of Port Macquarie’s local history reflecting Stage 2 of the HSIE syllabus.

The kit includes a comprehensive teachers guide, providing historical detail, ideas for student activities, classroom posters, reference books, DVDs and excursion ideas. In addition to the kit is a box of historic artefacts. Schools are able to book out this box for use in the classroom, or combine the kit with a visit to the Glasshouse to view the archaeological remains.

Courage to Care is a student-centred program conveying the messages of social tolerance and of living in harmony. It emphasises the importance of standing up to racism, persecution and any form of prejudice, especially in relation to individuals who belong to minority groups. It is especially relevant to school students as they encounter media images of intolerance and prejudice, or when they experience racism or bullying at school.
Courage to Care has been developed by B’nai B’rith, the world’s oldest community service organisation, founded in 1843. It is supported by the NSW Department of Education and Training. Since 1998, the exhibition has visited many NSW regional areas, spending approximately four weeks in each location. The program focuses on remarkable individuals who had the courage to risk their lives and the lives of their families to save Jews during the Holocaust. They provide powerful role models of individuals imbued with a sense of social justice coupled with strength of character. Their stories instil in all who learn about them the desire for a more harmonious society.

Living in Harmony Workshops Students will be introduced to the program and view a seven-minute introductory DVD positioning the exhibition in today’s context, with a focus on bullying. Students will be divided into three groups and will experience:

THEATRE BITES - HSC Drama Showcase An offshoot from the Playrites Theatre Festival run by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in 2005, Theatre Bites is an exciting showcase of some of the most outstanding HSC drama performances from schools within our region. The evening showcases works from the current students, and is a great opportunity for students in years 11 and 10 who are looking to explore drama for their HSC, to see outstanding presentations of students work.

Designers look deeply at human problems, asking questions, immersing themselves in the environment, devising creative solutions, making prototypes, trialling, testing, and identifying the things that work, discarding those that don’t and starting over – this is the way a designer works.
CUSP focuses on the ‘vision’ of the designer rather than a specific work, placing an emphasis on the process rather than the outcome. Ranging from architects to fashion, object, interactive, system, robotics and sound designers, CUSP features Australian practitioners who have the potential to influence lifestyle, learning and cultural change in the decade ahead. Secondary Design Study Day If you would like your students to discover current thinking and ideas in design and seek inspiration, then attending the Secondary Design Study Day is a must for Years 10 and 11. Students will listen to designers speak about their processes and ideas, participate in a workshop with them and experiment with concepts from CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade.

This exhibition uncovers the practice of twelve designers who are exploring new and innovative territory, and whose ideas are shaping the future. These designers are working in different and sometimes unexpected fields of design. The exhibition highlights their approaches, drawing the audience into the stories of these designers, exposing their process and profiling their ideas.

Henry V Regional Access Workshops are presented by a Bell Shakespeare Arts Educator and take place in advance of the performance. Schools that book tickets to Henry V are entitled to a Regional Access Workshop at no charge to the school. The workshops will cover plot synopsis, character journeys and design images from the production. Each RAW can accommodate a maximum of 40 students, and schools may combine if necessary. Students will need to wear comfortable clothing. The Bell Shakespeare Arts Educators are professional actors and/or directors who have worked with Bell Shakespeare in our mainstage productions or Actors At Work in-school performances, and have been trained by the Company as teachers. Arts Educators present all Bell Shakespeare programmes and have a wealth of performance experience and knowledge of Shakespeare.

Henry V By William Shakespeare Director Damien Ryan Amid a bombing raid in a war-torn city, somewhere in the world right now, a group of children are sheltering underground.

To get through the night the terrified kids put on an act of bravado – literally – and conjure up the heroics of King Henry V.

In an incredibly exciting new Bell Shakespeare production of Henry V, Damien Ryan directs a contemporary version of this play inspired by a true story – for 71 consecutive nights during the 1941 Blitz, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed plays, including the works of Shakespeare, and would perform them for others in the shelter. Damien Ryan’s unflinching production will explore war, the eloquence of leaders and the brotherhood of soldiers from every angle. Is King Henry V a courageous leader, a cowardly manipulator or simply a little boy lost?

Taiko — The Art of Drumming TaikOz is Australia’s leading taiko group, recognised internationally for its performances and its dedication to the art of Japanese drumming (taiko). ARTEXPRESS is an exhibition of outstanding works by 2013 Higher School Certificate Visual Arts Students from schools in NSW. This year’s exhibitions reflect students’ many interests and concerns, including the exploration of culture, personal identity and family relations. The bigger issues of world politics and the human impact on the environment were also addressed. The excellent standard of artworks in ARTEXPRESS is attributable to the rigor of the NSW Visual Arts curriculum and the quality teaching and learning occurring in New South Wales schools. This exhibition is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Education & Communities and the Board of Studies NSW in association with the Glasshouse.

ARTEXPRESS Discussion Tours
In association with ARTEXPRESS the Glasshouse will be running a one day drawing workshop for students in Year 11 who are continuing to progress with Visual Arts in the HSC. Working with a local professional artist, students will have the opportunity to work in a range of materials and explore drawing and printmaking techniques through this intensive one day workshop.
Teachers are encouraged to book their classes in for a discussion tour of the ARTEXPRESS exhibition. Tours will run for approximately 1 hour and focus on the key aspects of developing a body of works and examining the works conceptually and subjectively.
Students must bring own lunch. Limited places available.

Imaginary Theatre is one of Australia’s leading companies making theatre and arts experiences for children. This teachers’ professional development workshop will provide educators with an introduction to ‘Story Drama’, a classroom-based drama process aimed to deepen students’ engagement with narratives and texts using play-based drama activities. Teachers will be engaged in a handson learning experience which will demonstrate the conventions of ‘Story Drama’ using one of the Tashi books, and provide them with simple resources to implement the ‘Story Drama’ format into their teaching practice. By providing drama skills to teachers that can be applied to not only the Tashi stories, but any text or narrative, this workshop is a great professional development opportunity for teachers in preparing for the implementation of the new National Curriculum for The Arts.
