EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT
Jennifer Keeler-Milne
Drawn to a cabinet of curiosities From the artist... Curious people have always fathomed the intricacies and workings of the natural world. The culture of collecting, classifying and drawing natural specimens predates the naming of disciplines such as biology, science or art. During the Renaissance, collected specimens were assembled into rooms that were designed to evoke the spectacle and marvel of the natural world. These designated spaces were called wonder rooms (wunderkammer) or cabinets of curiosities. Drawing natural forms has been one of my preoccupations since 1999, when I first created a large cloud drawing that was chosen as a finalist for the Dobell Prize for Drawing at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Since then I have drawn natural objects and recently created my own cabinet of curiosities. It is a twodimensional cabinet consisting of more than a hundred charcoal drawings of natural specimens. These drawings seek to capture the distinct characteristics and details of a range of organic forms, yet also imbue them with a sense of intrigue.

The drawings fall into three subject categories: specimens from the ground, the sea and the air. These categories of ground, sea and air contain drawings of rocks, gemstones, nests, urchins, sponges, moths and feathers. Seeking to create an internal taxonomy, each set is different in subject and scale. These drawings are created using the sparest of materials: black willow charcoal on textured French paper. Beauty and mystery are repeated themes which are intertwined in my artistic practice. Creating and exhibiting drawings of organic forms not only documents and celebrates them as part of our natural world but also inherently brings awareness to their fragility and vulnerability in a climate of threat and change. I resonate closely with the words of Georgia O’Keefe when she said:
This is a snapshot from the Drawn to a cabinet of
curiosities catalogue. Drop into the Gallery to
“I have used these things to say what is to me the wideness and
experience the exhibition and
wonder of the world as I live in it”.

Lost images from Australia’s First Conflict - the fall of German New Guinea
Thomas James Rodoni’s glass plate negatives were unearthed from under a house in Speers Point by Rodoni’s son Bill, and given to Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle in 2014 – one hundred years after the start of WW1. This extremely rare collection documents the first military conflict of the First War, the fall of German New Guinea, an engagement that witnessed the first casualties of WW1.

Let The Chips Fall Where They May Catherine & Jennifer Strutt
The Strutt Sisters’ artwork can best be described as ‘mixed media assemblage’ using plywood and pressed tin that is cut, shaped and painted. Images from magazines, postcards, books and fabric are photocopied, cut and pasted onto various surfaces. Paint, resin, fabric and stencils are also used to create colour and patterning. Their prize-winning work resides in both national and international private collections. In 2003 their work was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Sulman Art Prize.

Encounter: Graham Blondel
AUTUMN’S COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT
Born in 1949, lives and works in Sydney
Each season we will profile
Encounter is a great example of Australian Post-modernist
an artwork from the Port
painting from the 1980’s. The canvas is teeming with elements, a visual cacophony of colour, pattern and painted marks. The surface is busy and it is hard to know where to look. The painting resembles a tapestry, its patterned surface mimics woven, textual materials, but in fact the painting is completely flat. This illusory, indeterminate surface strikes to the heart of postmodernism; it is a painting of appearances and superficiality. The subject could be a topographical map and the geometrical shapes suggest an urban environment. Encounter could be a reference to Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie, the striped tendrils and triangular patterning evoke electrical networks that strongly resemble Mondrian’s famous painting.
