Welcome Spring is an exciting time to visit the Gallery! The spring season opens with two new fabulous exhibitions - Shapeshifters: 3D Printing the

Future, an exhibition of extraordinary objects and design that explores 3D printing in an innovative and playful way toured by the Australian Design Centre and Black Mist Burnt Country: Testing

the Bomb, Maralinga and Australian Art an exhibition that revisits the history of the British atomic test program at Maralinga, Emu Field and Montebello Islands and examines the impact on people and land, as well as its on-going legacies. To complement these remarkable exhibitions the Gallery has programmed an exciting series of talks and events. These events are a great way to find out more about the exhibitions, meet the artists and get involved. In October the Art Lab will be a hub for creativity

The creativity continues with known local artist pavel Lankas returning to present Experimental

What if 3D printing gave you the ability to design your own life? With clothes being printed from desktop computers and organs being manufactured in labs, this rapidly evolving technology continues to revolutionise design as we know it. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery welcomes the exhibition Shapeshifters: 3D

Printing the Future as a playful exploration of 3D printing. It’s all about imagination, innovation and new methods of making, drawing on the high-tech and rapidly evolving world of 3D printers and fluid extrusion methodology. Shapeshifters is an Australian Design Centre touring exhibition developed in partnership with Western Plains Cultural Centre. Australian Design Centre is supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments. Australian Design Centre is assisted by the New South Wales Government through Create NSW, and the Australian government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

The designers and makers included in Shapeshifters all begin with a real world idea that is translated into a digital something – a piece of code, a CAD model or perhaps a verse of music – before being transformed into the final physical form. By experimenting with digital fabrication technologies, the designers build on their traditional modes of making to create something entirely new. Featuring works by eight Australian and one international maker with works ranging from jewellery, furniture, prosthetics, and digital interactive sound works; Louis Pratt, Michael Eden, Lousje Skala, Ryan Pennings, Dr David Ackland, Lukasz Karluk and XYZ Workshop (Kae Woie Lim & Elena Low).

“It is surprising how few people are aware that atomic bombs were exploded in Australia, and how little they know about the dislocation of Aboriginal people, the exposure of

Australian servicemen and the contamination of the land. This exhibition offers some

remarkable insights into a chapter of our history that has long-lasting consequences, while

it poses some important questions in relation to contemporary nuclear issues.” JD Mittmann, exhibition curator.

Artist in Residence Michaela Swan

16 - 27 October 2017 This October the Glasshouse welcomes fibre artist Michaela Swan to our Artist in Residency program. Michaela will work on a new series of work that will contribute to a future exhibition within the Gallery program in 2018. Swan is an interdisciplinary artist, predominantly centred in Fibres Textiles with performance elements, and sculpture. Swan’s work explores how materials can be used for other purposes and applied to non-traditional objects to create juxtaposition/paradox between materials and concepts. Many of her works are inspired by personal experiences and memories, places or materials and processes. Swan is an emerging artist living and working in Newcastle NSW. Swan grew up in Laurieton before relocating in 2012 to pursue studies in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle, she graduated in 2014 with Distinction. Swan studied a semester abroad at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2013 where she studied Wearable Art and Glass Casting, this developed her interest in travelling, foreign culture and the shared relationship that every person has with textiles. The Glasshouse Artist in Residency program provides a working space for artists to develop their arts practice. A Glasshouse Regional Gallery Artist in Residency Project

Shapeshifters is a playful exploration of 3D printing. It’s all about imagination, innovation and new methods of making. In it you’ll find a collection of fascinating objects that embody a sense of excitement with what’s happening in technology and design right now.

Shapeshifters is an Australian Design Centre Touring Exhibition, developed in partnership with Western Plains Cultural Centre.

And the best bit? 3D printing is made for sharing. Open source software and shared maker spaces mean anyone can try their hand at creating. Now mass production is replaced by mass customisation. Forget shopping. Why not download and redesign your own products?

Australian Design Centre is supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments. Australian Design Centre is assisted by the New South Wales Government through Arts NSW, and the Australian government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

So remember, Shapeshifters is just as much about you as it is about the makers. We hope the exhibition inspires you to think differently, and most of all – design playfully.
