scaled up to depict familiar sub-tropical flora. Banksias, flannel flowers, banana plants and frangipanis, rock pools with urchins and Neptune’s pearls are all captured with unashamed reverence for beauty. In the wake of the unprecedented fire storm that has raged up and down the East Coast of Australia, her works can been seen as elegies for what has been lost and what we must fight to protect. Finding light in the human affection for the coast and its vast biodiversity, both native and farmland, this exhibition expresses love and sorrow for what was destroyed, and fondness for what still stands, projecting a sense of hope for the future in the age of the Anthropocene. Like peering into the tiny universes of sea stars in rock pools, so bright you wouldn’t think they blend in, Laura Jones exhibition Arcadia will share

surrounded by anxiety and pressure, Abstract art can symbolise an escape. One might fall between the shapes and marks as they pull and retract from each other, creating a tension, a depth. Tangible, emotive, illusive and bold, this suggestive art form can leave the viewer in charge of what they wish to see. Abstraction is an exhibition that features works from the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Art Collection, featuring artist such as Val Allen, Marion Borgelt, Gavin Crichton and many more. Abstraction is one of two main themes that narrates the collection the other being Landscape.

Artist in Residence: Emma Walker: Emma Walker will be our first 2020 Artist In Residence, Create NSW’s Arts and Cultural Funding Program that gives opportunities for contemporary Australian artists to connect with our local area & community, developing ideas and concepts that will go towards a solo exhibition the following year.

About the artist Emma Walker consistently and evocatively engages with the natural world, looking at the patterns and rhythms that recur in nature. Carving, sanding, digging, grinding, glazing, dripping and scratching into layered timber, the artist creates a unique process and approach to her sculptural wall paintings. From ancient landscapes of sea, rock and sky to the microscopic patterns and rhythms that power existence, her work moves between the micro and the macro in a formative dance.
