Now in its eleventh year, this annual exhibition draws from entries submitted by photographers across Australia. This year This exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
43 photos were selected from an astounding 3,224 entries to form the exhibition. Students will experience the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.

Set in a country pub, the lives of our landlord and landlady have literally become their work. They met as children outside the pub, were engaged in the pub, had their wedding reception in the pub, and eventually bought the pub. Over the years they have served every type - and you're about to meet them. They all have their own story to tell. As various members of the local community pull up a stool and let us into their lives it becomes clear that Two is essentially about relationships, and none is more fascinating than that of our landlord and landlady. How will their story end?

Sydney Writers’ Festival returns to Port Macquarie in 2019. One of Australia’s best-loved forums for literature, ideas and storytelling, Sydney Writers’ Festival will stream its headline events from Carriageworks in Sydney direct to Players’ Theatre on Friday 3, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May. Students will be stimulated and engaged by conversations, debates and discussions, as the Festival brings the world’s finest authors to them in real time. As well as hearing new ideas from great thinkers, students have the opportunity to participate in Q&A sessions at each event, sending questions direct to the Sydney stage. In previous years presenters have included Annabel Crabb, Andrew Denton, Jane Harper, Julia Zemiro, Paul Kelly, Peter Greste, Clementine Ford and Andy Griffiths.

Celebrating Aboriginal art and culture, on the Mid North Coast. The exhibition will open at the Glasshouse Regional Gallery in Port Macquarie, then to the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and the Manning Regional Gallery, finishing at the Wadjar Regional Aboriginal Art Gallery. TAIKOZ Join Taikoz for a 60 minute, high energy, fun taiko drum workshop . Taikoz’s workshops are completely interactive, providing a great introduction to the basics of taiko drumming. Taiko is very physical and our workshops assist in developing musical and listening skills through coordinated movement of the arms, legs and body. The workshop begins with warm ups, which lead into learning rhythmic patterns, followed by a short piece of music to play together at the conclusion.

JOHN MAWURNDJUL:
I AM THE OLD AND THE NEW John Mawurndjul AM (born 1952, Kubukkan near Marrkolidjban, western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia) is celebrated for his mastery of rarrk (crosshatching) and his depiction of djang (sacred sites and totemic emblems), a tradition shared by generations of Kuninjku artists. The artist has led the development of this exhibition, which describes in Kuninjku (and English) his places of special cultural significance known as kunred, as well as the sacred places and spirits – or djang – that resurface time and time again in his artmaking. We also encounter the animals and spirit beings that populate these locations including female water spirits (yawkyawk), rainbow serpents (ngalyod) and mischievous mimih spirits. This exhibition was developed and co-presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) and Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), in association with Maningrida Arts & Culture. The touring exhibition, which is organised by the MCA, includes over 50 works, spanning forty years of the artist's practice.

NAMURU: CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER ART PRACTICE FOR TEACHERS
Presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia This program aims to build confidence in the delivery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content in the classroom. Namuru means ‘path’ or ‘compass’ in the language of the Gadigal people, the traditional owners of the land and waters that the MCA is situated upon. This workshop will provide a foundation for the development of learning experiences in response to the exhibition John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new. Educators will gain a deeper insight into the work of John Mawurndjul, and an understanding of best practice strategies for approaching teaching and learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and artists.

A Gala Night at the Ballet is a showcase of classical & contemporary dance, featuring some of Australia’s most sought after performers in a collaboration between professional dance companies and local dance education provider, Port Macquarie Performing Arts. The central piece will be the re-staging of the 1999 full length ballet, Armistice, choreographed by Stacey Morgan and performed by dancers from Port Macquarie Performing Arts. In addition to this piece, diverssments will be performed as part of the Gala. Dancers from The Queensland Ballet, the West Australian Ballet, the Melbourne City Ballet and The Australian Ballet will converge on the Glasshouse Port Macquarie for a three performance run in August, 2019.

Roald Dahl’s The Twits is a comedy of rebellion and justice in which Muggle-Wump the monkey races to outwit Mr and Mrs Twit, two of most terrible and disgusting people ever to have lived. Playfulness and tricks are more successful than following the rules in this classic Roald Dahl story, making it fantastically well suited to the world of puppet theatre.
Hugely appealing to children (and teachers!) with its promise of fun and ‘silliness’, this story also champions the kindhearted and features an underlying warm sentiment. The work encourages exploration of language and character, builds emotional intelligence and encourages critical thinking.

MAKE A JUNK MUSICAL INSTRUMENT This is an ideal workshop for primary school children, with developing interest in craft and play. The workshop encourages children to work collaboratively and aims to demonstrate what can be achieved when working in a team. Participants can make their own fabulous instruments like the ones used in the show. The Twits is full of secret musical instruments that make incredible and whacky sounds. Though they may seem fantastical, these instruments are actually super simple to make. Using collected items such as bottles, rubber gloves, rice, toilet rolls and rubber bands, participants can make their own maracas, guitars, tuba phones, tambourines or even jingle bells! Two highly skilled performers from The Twits will have children brainstorming, creating, making and performing.

WORKSHOPS These workshops are age-specific constructed allowing students to explore a range of mediums, gouache, oil pastels and printmaking techniques highlighted in the exhibition. Students will consider how we create and describe a sense of place. The workshop encourages students to discover cultures, people and places through the exhibition and their own art making.
ELSEWHERE:
TRAVELS THROUGH SYRIA, IRAN, EGYPT, MOROCCO AND CENTRAL ASIA WENDY SHARPE & BERNARD OLLIS This exhibition features new works created by the celebrated Australian artists Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis during their recent travels through Syria, Iran, Egypt, Morocco and Central Asia. Wendy Sharpe and Bernard Ollis create art in response to humanity. During their extensive journeys, they created sketchbooks, drawings and paintings to record conversations and chance meetings with people from all walks of life. These works will introduce students to real people from distant nations, casting aside orientalism to reveal authentic encounters. This exhibition inspires students to see the world through the unique intimacy of the sketch. It reflects upon individual experiences of travel in an era shaped by photography and global media. It is a perceptive journey through people and places that have been clouded by misapprehension. Wendy Sharpe is an Archibald Prize winner and former Official War Artist who also served on the Council of the Australian War Memorial. Bernard Ollis is a highly regarded artist and former Director of the National Art School in Sydney. Both are well-known for their extensive travel and humanitarian work, in addition to their well-established careers as visual artists.

What compels a maker to create? Why this technique or material? Why that concept? How does the mind of a maker work? A major touring exhibition from the Australian Design Centre, Obsessed: Compelled to make explores the stories of 14 Australian artists – stories that are at the same time unique and yet contain the frustrations and highpoints of a life of creative work that all of us can relate to, whether we are a professional artist, designer, craftsperson or hobbyist. The focus of this exhibition is not just on the works themselves but on what drives the making process itself. The exhibition seeks to highlight why making is important to us, how we make, what motivates us to make and why more of us are making than ever before. These makers have been chosen from across the spectrum of making – textiles, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, jewellery, conceptual art, glass blowing and sculptural weaving. The exhibition is accompanied by an education pack, a series of films and a full-length catalogue.

TEACHER WORKSHOP - date to be confirmed Making meaning: A workshop for creating poetry in response to visual art, craft and design by Dr Sarah Rice Canberra poet Dr Sarah Rice will lead a writing workshop encouraging participants to write creatively in response to the objects and designs in Obsessed: Compelled to make. Focusing on the materials, processes and motivations behind the artworks, Sarah will take participants through her approach to ekphrasis – writing about art – and read her poem You – Matter, created in response to the exhibition. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING By William Shakespeare Director James Evans Claudio and Hero are deeply in love. Beatrice and Benedick would rather swap sassy insults than sweet nothings. Much Ado About Nothing is a saucy and razor-sharp battle of wits between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick, who wield words as weapons, their banter betraying their love for each other. Claudio however is quickly consumed by envy and his idyllic world threatens to come tumbling down as he humiliates Hero. Beatrice and Benedick must join forces to defend true love – even if they can’t recognise it in themselves. But will truth and honesty win the day, and does love really conquer all? Much Ado About Nothing will be a powerful exploration of the struggle for identity and self-knowledge in a male-dominated world. The pursuit of love is framed in a social context that enhances the darker themes in this timeless comic gem. Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s contemporary comedies where romance is thwarted by dastardly plots, misinformation, false accusations, broken promises, and bumbling cops. Or is it?

THE JOHN BELL SCHOLARSHIP
The Much Ado About Nothing Regional Access Workshops are presented by a Bell Shakespeare artist over the course of one day, about a month in advance of the performance of Much Ado About Nothing at the Glasshouse.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students living in regional areas, who are interested in a career as a performer. Three students are selected each year from across Australia to come to Sydney and spend a week with Bell Shakespeare. They will participate in acting masterclasses, be taught by John Bell, observe one week of Bell Shakespeare rehearsals, see live theatre and perform their winning monologue for Artistic Director Peter Evans and a Bell Shakespeare cast.
The workshops cover plot synopsis, character journeys and design images from the production. Schools that book tickets to Much Ado About Nothing are entitled to a Regional Access Workshop at no charge to the school or venue. Please register your interest on the booking form.
Scholarship auditions take the form of 15 minute one-onone masterclasses with a Bell Shakespeare artist. Each student must perform a 1-2 minute monologue from the suggested monologue list provided by Bell Shakespeare or a monologue of their choice from any Shakespeare play. To be eligible to audition, students must be at least 16 years of age by 31 December 2019, and still be at high school fulltime in 2019; and complete a registration form. AN AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL TOURING EXHIBITION Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a long-standing tradition of fighting for Country, and continue to serve with honour among our military forces. They have also worked in ancillary, industry, and other home-front activities, and their communities have been thrust into the front line of theatres of war. The touring exhibition For Country, for Nation highlights these stories and explores themes of remembrance and tradition through family histories, objects, art, and photographs from across Australia, drawing inspiration from cultural traditions and symbols of warrior’s discipline, knowledge, leadership, and skill. For Country, for Nation is thematic in structure. Within each theme are stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experience during wartime and peace.

The tour of the Exhibition is supported by Visions of Australia and International Art Services Australia.

West End musical star, Peter Cousens, and legendary flutist Jane Rutter (Chevalière des Arts et Lettres), will join forces in 2019 with an evening performance and educational workshops at the Glasshouse.
MASTERCLASS WITH JANE RUTTER Renowned for her dynamic performing, technical brilliance, and inspired teaching skills, Jane Rutter’s masterclass program helps music students find their ‘bel-canto’ voice and inner joy in their playing. Jane is a disciple of French Flute Masters, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alain Marion. The masterclass offers music students a special chance to work with a master musician. It provides an indepth exploration of performance techniques, music practice and musical philosophy.
MASTERCLASS WITH PETER COUSENS Peter is a well-known actor, singer, producer, director, teacher and film director who has appeared in musical theatre productions in Australia and London. He has a wealth experience in all aspects of the performing arts including film, musical theatre, drama, direction and talent development. Participants can expect to learn and develop performance skills in voice, singing, characterisation, analysing a song, working with a team and interpreting a song.

HERITAGE IN A BOX
This education resource has been developed as an aid for teachers in the instruction of Port Macquarie's local history reflecting Stage 2 of the HSIE syllabus. The kit includes a comprehensive teacher's guide providing historical detail, ideas for student activities, classroom posters, reference books, DVDs and excursion ideas. In additional to the kit is a box of historic artefacts. Schools are able to book out the box of museum objects for use in the classroom.
