2O
In 2018, the WIN Network first partnered with Glasshouse Port Macquarie as Principal Season Sponsor. Three years into this successful collaboration, I am excited to announce our continued support as Glasshouse 2020 Theatre Program Principal Sponsor.
WIN is the largest regional television broadcaster in Australia. We have a presence in all states and the nation’s capital. We take our role in the greater Port Macquarie community seriously, and we are passionate about sharing stories close to home. These beliefs resonate with the vision of Glasshouse Port Macquarie, but it also links to this year’s GLASSHOUSE SELECT – 2020 Theatre Program. In curating its annual program, Glasshouse has always brought highly ambitious, exclusive and thought-provoking productions to Port Macquarie, and just like Glasshouse, we strongly believe our community deserves a truly exciting and diverse arts offering. Congratulations to Glasshouse on what is set to be another fantastic theatre program in 2020 GLASSHOUSE SELECT. We wish all Glasshouse Members and audiences a wonderful year ahead. WELCOME TO GLASSHOUSE SELECT, YOUR 2O2O THEATRE PROGRAM “SELECT (si-lekt)” is to make a choice; to choose something of special value or excellence, to give something preference; and that is exactly what I do at the Glasshouse each year when I carefully curate a range of premium performances for our Community. The productions I select and present represent the very best theatre companies and producers from around Australia and the world. This ensures our Community has access to the same wonderful theatre and entertainment experiences enjoyed by our metropolitan counterparts. GLASSHOUSE SELECT 2020 brings you world class opera with Opera Australia’s CARMEN, dramatic theatre with Animal Farm, political satire with The Wharf Revue, the ever popular HMS Pinafore, family fun with Edward the Emu, Junkyard Beats and the world’s best contemporary circus with BACKBONE. Plus, there are many more festivals, musicals and Morning Melodies to entertain you throughout the year. In 2020 we are delighted to welcome back WIN Network as the Glasshouse Theatre Program Principal Sponsor. This is the third year they have supported the Theatre Program ensuring our community continues to have access to first-class entertainment to enhancing the liveability of our wonderful region. Thank you also to all our Partners and Port Macquarie - Hastings Council for their commitment to the Performing Arts. Finally, a sincere thank you to our Glasshouse Members, loyal patrons, Seat Endowment patrons, our volunteers and regional audiences for attending a show and making the Glasshouse a part of your everyday lives.

ONE SH OW O N LY!
BENNELONG After a triumphant National Tour in 2017, a sell-out return season at Adelaide Festival, 7 Helpmann Awards wins and a successful Australian Regional Tour in 2019, Bangarra returns Bennelong to Port Macquarie in 2020. Created by Artistic Director Stephen Page, Bennelong explores the life of one of history’s most iconic Aboriginal figures. Woollarawarre Bennelong was a senior man of the Eora, who led his community to survive a clash of cultures. Through striking dance language, soul-stirring soundscapes and exquisite design, Bangarra unpacks Bennelong’s legacy and its reverberation through contemporary Australian life.
ABOUT BANGARRA Bangarra are internationally acclaimed for their powerful dancing, distinctive theatrical voice and utterly unique soundscapes, music and design. The company’s dancers are dynamic artists who each have a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background, from various locations across the country.
Don’t miss your chance to experience this extraordinary work.

11 GLASSHOUSE PORT MACQUARIE PRESENTS A HAYES THEATRE CO. PRODUCTION
H.M.S. PINAFORE MUSIC BY ARTHUR SULLIVAN LIBRETTO BY W.S. GILBERT
Set sail on the high seas with Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comedy of starcrossed lovers, mismatched marriages and mistaken identities. Award winning director, Kate Gaul, makes her Hayes Theatre Co debut with this re-imagined, gender-bending, hyper-theatrical and kinky take on this Gilbert & Sullivan classic. This nautical caper overflowing with infectious tunes such as I am the Monarch of the Sea, I’m Called Little Buttercup and He is an Englishman, H.M.S. Pinafore is a sharp satire of the English social hierarchical system of the Victorian Age. Don’t miss out on this rollicking farce and get set for some hysterical hi-jinks on the high seas.

BY GEORGE ORWELL
CREATED BY SHAKE & STIR THEATRE CO Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multiaward winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.
Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. Tour supported by arTour an initiative of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Photo by Justine Walpole

It’s good night and good luck to the comedy juggernaut that’s been keeping the bastards honest since 2000. The bad news is that the planet is on fire and our world leaders are barely qualified to run a chook raffle. And the good? The Wharf Revue has fake news, fake hair and real laughs in abundance. No one is safe and no topic too taboo in this night of sketches, songs and sidesplitting satire. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll want to move to New Zealand!

EDWARD THE EMU
t h e b e s tu t h i n g yo . . . c a n b e is
yo u
Tired of his life as an emu, Edward decides to try being something else for a change. He tries swimming with seals. He spends a day lounging with lions. He even does a stint slithering with snakes. But Edward soon discovers that being an emu may be the best thing after all, so he heads back to his pen, only to find a big surprise awaiting him... Edwina the Emu! Soon enough, Edward and Edwina become the proud parents of ten little emu eggs. Whilst Edward minds the eggs, Edwina sets out to find a job and a hilarious adventure begins. The emus’ journey of hilarity and tenderness leads them to discover that the best thing you can be is …. you! Written for the stage by Eva Di Cesare. Directed by Eva Di Cesare. Illustrations by Rod Clement
