SEASON 2018

GLASSHOUSE PORT MACQUARIE

Message from the Principal 2018 Season Sponsor The WIN Network is delighted to be the prestigious “Glasshouse Performing Arts 2018 Principal Season Sponsor”, and join with the Glasshouse to build connections within our community. This significant partnership between the Glasshouse and the WIN Network comes at a key time in the network’s history. A longstanding part of the national media landscape, WIN is the largest regional television broadcaster in Australia, covering all states and the nation’s capital. The WIN Network may be a newcomer to the Mid North Coast region, but our award-winning programs including MasterChef Australia to Neighbours, may be familiar to you. The network’s reputation in local production and talent is just one of the shared brand synergies between our organisations, and forms a strong foundation for success as we move forward together. The WIN Network is grateful for this opportunity to demonstrate our desire to be an integral member of the Port Macquarie community. The Glasshouse is the region’s premier, state-of-the-art cultural destination, and we are thrilled that our partnership will showcase our commitment and support of performing arts. We will continue bringing a diverse and creative mix of entertainment and events to our region, while building strong links within the cultural sector and the wider community. One of the many advantages of this partnership is the continued development of unique theatre experiences that will resonate with our customers, team members and stakeholders. But at the heart of both our organisations lies a shared passion for our local community. We are focused on using this exciting platform to offer a high standard of diverse and inspiring entertainment experiences, while stimulating our local economy and enriching the cultural identity of the Port Macquarie region. We are extremely proud to be the Principal Sponsor of the Performing Arts Season, and we wish the Glasshouse Members and audiences an outstanding 2018 Season.

Welcome to Season 2018 Welcome to a new year of theatrical wonders, musical delights and exciting new Partners! As we begin the 10th Performing Arts Season in our beautiful venue, it’s become clear that Port Macquarie-Hastings is a community that embraces the arts in all its forms and is a key component of our cultural identity. The Glasshouse is where you may have seen your first opera, orchestra or classical ballet. Laughed until you cried with friends at a comedy festival. Watched your child or grandchild dance across a theatre stage for the very first time. Ascended the steps to collect your Bachelor Degree. Celebrated a community service award. Far more than a building, the Glasshouse now resonates with our shared memories and is a reflection of our lives and community life. In our hearts and minds it will be FOREVER Glasshouse. Not only does the 2018 Performing Arts program bring a diverse variety of music, dance, drama and physical theatre, it also brings a number of new Partnerships with organisations who are passionate about supporting arts and culture within our community. I am excited to welcome our inaugural Glasshouse Performing Arts Principal Season Sponsor, WIN Network. Aiden and the team at WIN Network believe that our community deserves to have the best in entertainment bought to our doorstep so their commitment ensures we can continue to deliver a high standard of live performance from around Australia and the world. I would also like to welcome Angove Family Winemakers as our 2018 Performing Arts Season Supporting Partner, and the Conservatorium Mid North Coast as our Presenting Partner for Opera Australia. These Partnerships ensure the Glasshouse can continue to enhance the lifestyle of the region through the diversity of the arts. GLORIOUS!

by Peter Quilter Presented by Glasshouse Port Macquarie, Greater Port Macquarie FOCUS and Christine Harris & Australia’s premier theatre touring company HIT Productions

Glorious! tells the hilarious true story of the world’s worst opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins. This West End and world-wide hit was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award - Best New Comedy (2005) and has been seen by two million plus people across six continents. In the 1940s the singer everyone wanted to see perform live in New York was the enthusiastic soprano Florence Foster Jenkins - ‘the first lady of the sliding scale’. Surrounding herself by devoted friends, almost as eccentric as she, this deliciously happy and delusional woman paid scant attention to her critics and would screech and warble to her audiences, most falling about with laughter. This heart-warming comedy moves from Florence’s charity recitals and lavish balls, through to her very odd recording sessions and her ultimate performance triumph at New York’s Carnegie Hall, incorporating her wonderfully colourful relationships along the way.

PLAYHOUSE CREATURES by April DeAngelis

Curiosities, sex objects, or professional artists? In 1660 the throne was restored to Charles II and he returned from France in triumph. He brought with him an addiction to the theatre, as it had been done by the French. Boys will be boys, the saying goes, but boys would be girls too in England’s theatre companies until Charles decreed that women would – for the first time – be allowed to perform on the English stage. Audiences turned up in their droves – including the King – to see the spectacle of women performing. This is the story of five actresses of this time, their triumphs, their trials, and their struggle to be taken seriously as legitimate actors – a moving and funny account of the precarious lives of Restoration actresses.

Suitable for all ages

Expect to revise any preconceived notions you have about classical music when internationally acclaimed Steinway artist Julian Gargiulo makes his Glasshouse debut, direct from Carnegie Hall! The man with the fro-like mane wanted to be a rock star when he was a kid but grew up to become a classical pianist instead. But, as he says, his hair kept dreaming. Described as “Saturday Night Live with a piano”, Julian will hold you spellbound as he takes you through a stunning program including Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov, but not forgetting the usual suspects Beethoven and Chopin in-between sharing his life stories and experiences from stages all around the world. Combining rigorous Russian conservatory training with an informal style of presenting classical music, Julian has received standing ovations on both sides of the Atlantic and is not to be missed.

... he’s just brilliant ... there are not enough words to describe the genius behind him ... because when he sits down and plays you are watching a Beethoven or Chopin ... He’s just magnificent. ABC TV

smoke/haze Cast: Liza Beamish Lachlan Baker Emma Salmon Rhett Salmon

From Broadway to Ballroom is a stunningly beautiful show – a spectacular fusion of ballroom dancing, song, and glamorous gowns. The show stars seasoned opera performers Liza Beamish and Lachlan Baker and 2015 World Dance Council Champions Emma and Rhett Salmon. Prepare to be captivated by beautiful voices and spectacular dance routines, including songs such as The Phantom of the Opera’s beautiful All I Ask of You, Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, My Fair Lady’s I Could have Danced All Night, the stirring You Raise Me Up and operatic arias. Emma and Rhett’s world class dancing includes jive, tango quickstep, waltz and more, both as featured solos and as a visual accompaniment for the singers. From its romantic atmospheric beginning to its light-hearted ending tribute to Strictly Ballroom’s Love is in the Air - this is a show not to be missed.

Forever Glasshouse. Season 2018

A glittering fusion of musical theatre, opera and dance.
