WELCOME What an amazing year for the Glasshouse Port Macquarie! We’ve received four major industry awards in recognition of the tremendous efforts by the Glasshouse team to deliver our exciting 2011 programs (see back cover for full details). Since opening in July 2009: • Over 660,000 visitors have been to the Glasshouse. • Over 13,000 school children have participated in our Education @ the Glasshouse program. • Over $3.2 million in Box Office ticket sales. This January we have more activities on offer than ever before so you can see what all the fuss is about. Summerfest 2012 is packed with events for everyone. We’re bringing you the best line up of shows, funtastic activities and memorable events all through January. Moonlight Movies, a film festival for kids, Holiday Fun and free art activities, Foreshore in the Forecourt Markets, giant Glasshouse games, yoga classes and even Angelina Ballerina herself! In late December we will be opening the Summerfest Glasshouse Bar complete with coffee, tea, snacks and drinks. Come and enjoy a Sunday afternoon with the kids for free fun in the Forecourt - or until 8pm on Thursday nights with a free Gallery Curator talk. So have some fun, ‘in & out’ of the sun!

ARREBATO ENSEMBLE Arrebato Ensemble is redefining the world of flamenco for contemporary audiences. The group blends flamenco sounds and rhythms with jazz and other world music traditions – expect arresting and hauntingly beautiful music. Following a successful launch at the Sydney Opera House their new album Absolucion is one of the five final nominees for the 2011 ABC Limelight Awards for Best World Music Recording. BRAVISSIMO

The Bravissimo concert provides an opportunity for Mid North Coast music students who excelled in their 2011 Higher School Certificate Music exams. Bravissimo celebrates the culmination of many years intensive practise for these young performers. Music studies for these students was more than just another subject choice – it was a passion. This inaugural matinee program is an initiative of a number of our local secondary music educators and endorsed by the Mid North Coast Conservatorium of Music Council as an outreach and development project.

THE SEARCHERS The Glasshouse brings you The Searchers 50th Anniversary Concert Tour. The Searchers were the front line of the British Invasion. The band began as a skiffle group in Liverpool in the late 1960s.

GALLERY EXHIBITION

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE South African artist William Kentridge is one of the most significant artists of our time. Kentridge is internationally renowned for his animated films, based on charcoal drawings that explore the complex history of South Africa, the legacy of apartheid and the nature of human emotions and memory. This exhibition presents a series of works on paper, sculptures and the film Tide Table. In this film Kentridge examines the devastating impact of HIV and Aids on South Africa through the eyes of a ruthless Johannesburg industrialist. The Glasshouse Regional Gallery would like to acknowledge the Art Gallery of NSW and Annandale Galleries, Sydney for their support with this exhibition. On view until 12 February 2012. OCEAN–SKY PAINTING WORKSHOP WITH PAVEL LANKAS

Local artist Pavel Lankas will be conducting a workshop demonstrating his techniques of painting seascapes and clouds. Pavel has been a practicing artist for over 30 years with many years teaching experience, including thirteen years teaching Fine Art at the North Coast Institute of TAFE. Pavel will discuss and demonstrate his own techniques and painting process. Participants will learn basic painting techniques using acrylic paint, underpainting, ‘wet into wet’, scumbling and glazing techniques to build up a surface and produce a finished composition. For novice and experienced artists (16+). Places are limited. 40

WATER MEMORY Water Memory celebrates the sublime grandeur of the Australian waterscape. Chris Langlios captures the ever-changing ambience of the landscape, with brooding skies, hazy mists and shimmering horizon lines. Pavel Lankas’ work explores the tension, drama and uneasy calmness of our Port Macquarie coastline, where the ocean meets the sky and the storms brew. Inspirational and uplifting large-scale landscapes are the hallmark of Anneke Silver’s artwork. Her aerial perspectives capture the topographical splendour of North Queensland waterscapes. Always wanted to delve into the digital world but never been quite sure how? Spend a few hours with our Local Open ABC Producer Wiriya Sati and find new ways to connect and enter the digital world.

Wiriya will show you how to set up a time-lapse digital photography movie, add sound effects and copyright-free music. You will learn about video and audio editing, exporting, compressing and sharing. Bring in your own camera and laptop. FUN WITH COLOUR

Be prepared for a fun exhibition of abstract artworks direct from the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Collection. The Council Collection features a diverse range of artists, themes and styles – this exhibition features a selection of bright colourful artworks that will appeal to young and old alike. Through a series of hands-on colour-inspired activities, children are encouraged to engage with and explore the exhibition. On view until 19 February 2012.

FROCK STARS Coffee Morning with Glynis Jones Who doesn’t love a pretty frock or a fashion parade. But what really goes on behind the scenes? This is your chance to find out! Curator Glynis Jones from Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum will guide you through the exhibition, helping you better understand the complex organisation required to deliver Australian Fashion Week each year – one of the world’s major fashion events. Over a cup of coffee, learn more about the roles and experiences of people who have been part of this iconic event. This is also a unique opportunity to explore the designer’s creative process of putting together a collection for Australian Fashion Week.

ED DUNCAN Metropolis is an exhibition of new artwork by mid north coast artist Edward Duncan. Duncan’s raw and colourful works are filled with confrontational imagery inspired by issues and stories in the daily news, forgotten history, human evolution, environmental problems. Duncan explores ideas on human evolution and animalistic behaviours – while questioning contemporary society and people’s tendency to flock together and live in concrete anthill metropolises with no tribal bonds.
