SONIC JOURNEYS
WELCOME TO OUR 43RD SEASON!
Dear Friends of Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings,
Welcome to our 43rd season, Sonic Journeys, where we invite you to embark on an extraordinary voyage across the world of chamber music. This season, we explore the dynamic evolution of the genre, blending contemporary works with classical pieces, all set against the backdrop of metro Detroit’s diverse architectural and cultural landscape.
Sonic Journeys is more than a theme; it’s an invitation to travel with us through soundscapes both familiar and new. Our three distinctive concert series—Nightnotes, Structurally Sound, and Signature—serve as waypoints on this journey, each ofering unique opportunities for you to interact with our musicians and delve into the rich tapestry of chamber music.
The Nightnotes series will transport you to the enchanting Hagopian World of Rugs, featuring the premiere of two newly commissioned works from the Resonate Project, exploring the African Diaspora through contemporary American chamber music.
The Structurally Sound series takes us to unique venues like the Progressive Arts Studio Collective, the Wright Museum and Detroit Public Theatre, blending music with the architectural history of Detroit.
The Signature Series represents our most enduring commitment to the beloved chamber music canon. It afords us the opportunity to feature great music that has withstood the passage of time alongside new works imagined and created by today’s leading composers.
Our Sonic Journeys theme also includes collaborations with the University of Michigan and Oberlin College for the young composer-in-residence and young ensemble-inresidence program, showcasing emerging talent in chamber music.
Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. Your continued support makes it possible for us to create and share these unforgettable experiences.
Warm regards,
Maury Okun, President
