GREAT LAKES CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL!

As we gather for another exhilarating season of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, I find myself reflecting on the intricate connections between music, design, and the spaces we inhabit. This year’s theme, Blueprints in Sound, speaks to the careful craftsmanship that lies at the heart of both great music and great design. Each composition—whether centuries old or newly created— is built upon a foundation of structure and intention, yet within that framework exists infinite possibility for expression, interpretation, and beauty.

On a personal level, I am continually struck by the way chamber music, much like a beautifully designed space, brings people together in profound ways. The interplay between musicians, the shaping of sound within a room, and the connection between performer and audience all contribute to something greater than the sum of its parts. In this way, Blueprints in Sound is more than just a theme—it is a reminder of how music, like design and architecture, has the power to shape our experiences and transform our perspectives. We have drawn inspiration from the work of Ruth Adler Schnee, a visionary in midcentury modern textile design and a founding board

I look forward to welcoming you to the 2025 Festival!

BLUEPRINTS IN SOUND: HIGHLIGHTS

• Two of Bach’s most revered works are presented in a new light—the Goldberg Variations are arranged for string trio, and the Chaconne for solo violin is examined through a multimedia presentation by Detroit Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Robyn Bollinger

• A Festival first: Handel and Poulenc’s organ concertos will be performed in the architecturally spectacular Sanctuary of St. Hugo of the Hills by James O’Donnell, esteemed organist emeritus of Westminster Abbey

• Exciting new works by eminent contemporary composers:

• The world premiere of Latticework by Sean Shepherd, co-commissioned by the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Northwest, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, played by Leila Josefowicz and Paul Watkins

• Joan Tower’s To Sing or Dance, co-commissioned by the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, and Emerald City Music

As our Festival celebrates Blueprints in Sound, this season’s theme honoring the intersection of music, architecture, and design, I find myself reflecting on the deep impact of Ruth Adler Schnee and her husband Ed—both in the world of design but also so deeply woven into the fabric of our Festival’s character.

The Schnees were founding members of the Festival’s board, bringing their remarkable spirit and insight into every early decision we made. In many respects, they personified the Festival’s aspirations. The Schnees lived at the intersection of creativity and practicality. They understood art. They understood business. And they understood the relationship between the two.

Ruth and Eddie (they were most often together) were frequent visitors to our office.  Sometimes that involved talking about Schubert or Brahms. More often it was mundane –stuffing envelopes, filing, taking ticket orders – all of the ordinary chores that helped our young organization succeed.

Ruth’s art is both visionary and pragmatic, a duality that the Festival still strives for in every decision that it makes.

This season, as we explore music as an architectural art form, we celebrate the life and legacy of Ruth Adler Schnee. Just as she left an indelible mark on the world of design, her impact on this Festival will forever be embedded in our history.
