O

oh, the winter edition has arrived. This is my absolute favorite time of the year. Everyone will be getting into the spirit of the holidays. Soon, families will visit, like my sister recently did from Nebraska. (See pictures) New Year’s resolutions will be made, budgets will be planned and the time for gifting and helping those in need will be here before we know it. I’m excited to share with you some of the fabulous stories we have for you in this issue. Brentwood Royal Family Kids Camp is getting ready to launch their matching fundraising project for foster kids that can attend camp each summer. (Pg.34) If you have ever had a child be the victim of a bully, you must read about author Harry Pacheco’s book series about bullying. I had the chance to visit with him about his books and his upcoming tour. (Pg. 17) Then who knew that Antioch boasts the largest Chinese Buffet? The New Oriental Buffet has great dining and over 150 items. See Cha Cha’s review on page 16. Last of all are the great Pittsburg Entertainment & Arts Hall of Fame Inductees. This year they kept it all in the family. (pg. 18) Many more great stories await you with every turn of the page. Please do not forget to shop, dine, and patronize the local businesses that advertise in our magazine. These are some of the great business owners that help make up the East Bay Delta living region.

According to Pew Research Center, 54% of on-line daters surveyed feel that one or more individuals had seriously misrepresented themselves. 28% of the respondents reported having been made to feel harassed or uncomfortable by someone. Then, add to this the concerns of possible breaches and flawed privacy safeguards and you see that digital romance can have unadvertised price tags. This said, social stigma has diminished with 87% of male and 83% of females now finding on-line dating as acceptable and 8% of 18-29 year olds saying that they found their current partner through online dating.

Computer assisted love not for you? How about GROUP DATING, an off-shoot from other cultures where friends go out together? The U.S. variation is meet-ups of strangers centered around targeted activities. Organizations like Events and Adventures Clubs for Singles relieve pressure to match. You can relax and be yourself at any of 30-50 events a month, ranging from casual lunch to hiking, hang gliding, beer crawls or even world travel. Options, then, is the emergent trend. I defer to my own story to illustrate that one size doesn’t fit all. I was an inveterate bachelor who married at the ripe old age of 42 years, outlasting countless of my mom’s exhortations that “There is a cover for every pot.” Predating the on-line phenomena, I flirted with the choices of the pickup scene or personal ads. Neither was fun. I had the fortune though, of a friend acting as a matchmaker who invited me to a Thanksgiving party where I met her cousin. We married within four months on April Fools Day. The rest was history. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Antioch’s Largest Chinese Buffet By Cha Cha

Editor.deltalivingmag@gmail.com

W

hen you have had too many conversations about where to eat with no reply, get in your car and drive to Antioch. At the corner of Buchanan Road and Somersville Road there is the New Oriental Buffet which is boasted as Antioch’s largest Chinese buffet. They are located at 2656 Somersville Road (Somersville Towne Center); you can’t miss it, nor would you want to. Chef Tsang Yen Cheng opened this large restaurant after closing his facility in New York and moving back here to the Delta area in 2007 to be closer to his family. He employees 7-9 workers that provide all the services needed to serve you from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and they are open 365 days a year, including all holidays. So my friend and I decided to go see what all the “talk” was about and we stopped in for lunch. Upon entering the nicely decorated restaurant, we were immediately greeted by the ever so friendly staff member, who was glad to take us to our table, 16

November 2017 – January 2018

take our drink order, and then point us into the direction of the huge buffet area. I personally enjoyed that our table was selected not near another table. Being that they are capable of seating 241 guests, which includes a private party area of 74, you can eat without feeling cumbersome next to other guests. We began our meal with over 20 freshly made choices of Sushi. If you don’t see a type you desire they will custom make what you want right there. All you can eat buffet is what they offer. • Lunch is $8.95 and seniors $7.95 • Dinner is $13.99 and seniors are $12.95 • Children’s prices vary and range from $3.99$11.49 and depends on their age and of course children under 3 eat free • Sunday and Holiday meals are $14.99 For those who do not have the time to dine in, you can choose their “Fill a box” option. A lunch takeout box is $9.76 and dinner is $9.95-$11.99. You can fill the box with any food items you desire.

That was so nice because I prefer a certain type. The rows of hot, steamy, freshly made appetizers, soups, chow mein, fried rice, pork, chicken, beef and sweet and sour dishes awaits you. They offer 73 dishes on their menu. Their Mongolia BBQ is in the back area. You will not want to miss this. Pick from the many fresh meat and vegetable choices and the chef grills your creation right before your eyes. I am hungry just thinking about it. They have the largest meaty ribs I have ever seen at a buffet, along with large pieces of chicken on skewers, crawfish, crab legs, and fried prawns. The salmon was one of the best that my friend had ever tasted. Of course they have American choices of food available, along with a salad bar, and children’s choices. Awe, let’s not forget the dessert bar with cream puffs, cookies, ice cream and other pastries. So, the next time you can’t decide where to eat, take your family and friends to Antioch’s largest Chinese Buffet: New Oriental Buffet. Tell them Cha-Cha sent you. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Family ties bind Pittsburg Entertainment & Hall of Fame inductees By Chuck Dybdal

ced30@aol.com Photos courtesy of chuck dybdal

P

ittsburg artists have always considered themselves family, and the fourth Pittsburg Entertainment & Arts Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was truly a family affair. The Oct. 8 Induction Ceremony at Pittsburg’s Creative Arts Building included two brothers, Ramiro and Nick Amador, as well as an uncle and nephew, James Riso and Salvatore Mercurio. Riso’s son Peter, a 2016 Inductee, represented his father at the ceremony. They are the third father-son duo inducted along with Papa John Guerrero and his son John and Delfo Lanzafame and his son Chris. There is also another uncle-nephew combination with Raymond and Gerald Gasper as well as brothers Johnny Steele and Steve Lopez. Pittsburg artists have always shown respect for preceding generations, and Ramiro Amador, Pete Riso and Mercurio are more excited for their relatives than for themselves. Ramiro, who played in bands such as Amador & Friends, N Da House and Tortilla Soup with his now deceased older brother, said he was happier about the news of Nick’s induction than his own. “Having him go in, representing his generation, all the musicians he grew up and played with and our family is great,” Amador said. “Truthfully, yes, I’m happier for my father,” said Riso. “It’s special that people appreciated his contributions.” Mercurio played in a band, the Four Cs that consisted of four cousins and was mentored by James Riso. “My Uncle Jimmy, we looked up to him so much. He was an inspiration to us all,” said Mercurio. Nick Amador was a sax player and Riso an accordionist. Amador was one of the original members of the 18

legendary Pittsburg band The Royal Heartbeats that recorded for Capital Records and was a dynamic performer especially when playing his signature tune, ‘Honky Tonk,’ which was played in his honor at the ceremony. Bass player Ramiro Amador is one of the original members of the long-running PHDs and has toured with Malo for years as well as writing original music. Riso performed solo and in duos, trios and big bands, entertaining troops at Camp Stoneman, regularly headlining at the El Rio Club in Antioch and also forming a popular duo with Delfo Lanzafame at weddings and social events. In addition to his music, including fronting several jazz groups, Mercurio is an artist whose works have

been featured in many Bay Area galleries and shows. Nick Amador and James Riso were mentors to the younger members of their families, instilling in them the excitement of many genres of music as well as professionalism. Those lessons took root and have been paid forward. Joining the Amador brothers and Riso and Mercurio in the 2017 Induction Class were Sal Bruno, Ann Custer, Silvester Henderson, Jerry Lumbre, Chito Perez, Cortez Walker, David Ward and Jack French and Bill Plummer, who co-directed Pittsburg High School’s first major musical production, ‘Guys And Dolls.’ Nick Amador and Bruno were typical Pittsburg musical brothers, who would substitute for each other at performances if the other couldn’t attend. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

The Scamless Society By Vinny DiNicola

C

an you imagine anything more diabolical than targeting and preying on our elderly by means of telemarketing scams, impersonation fraud and sales pitches designed to trick and rob them? These scams are run by professionals who carefully and methodically construct their frauds. They use pressure with their victims, telling them they have to act quickly and immediately. Many of us believe we would easily detect a fraud scheme. It turns out this just isn't the case and, often, these crimes are not reported because victims feel foolish and gullible. A recent review in 2015 and 2016 of more than 5 million complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that consumers aged 60 and older complained most about imposter scams, telemarketing cons and tech support scams. What follows are a few examples you’ll want to be aware of and maybe share with your family and friends. The Sweepstakes Scam is a scam that specifically targets seniors. With great enthusiasm, the caller tells the senior they have won $1 million dollars, or more. They may even say they have also won a new car and they’re asked what color they would like. The caller tells them that their win is guaranteed. In order to release the money and the car, the winner must pay $5000 in advance to cover fees, taxes and insurance. These callers have sophisticated and scripted answers for any question posed by the victim. Victims believe that this bit of good luck 22

November 2017 – January 2018

is really happening to them. They often imagine all the good they will do with the money for their family, or their community and fall prey. Another shameful scam is The IRS Impersonation Fraud. The IRS reports that over $29 million dollars has been stolen using this recent scam. This swindle involves someone posing by phone as an aggressive IRS agent. They tell their victim they must immediately pay past due taxes and threaten the victim with arrest that day if the money isn't paid immediately by wire transfer, or other method. You’ll find a wealth of information regarding this scam and how to report it at http://treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml The Tech Support Scam starts with a warning on your computer, possibly with a blinking alert, or malware alert that says your PC is infected and offers a toll free number to call to connect with a Microsoft support technician. When the number is called, the scammer asks to access your computer remotely to test for computer infections. Undoubtedly they discover your computer is infected with viruses and spyware. For a credit card payment that

averages $300 they offer to clean up your system and solve your problem. Of course, your computer is not infected and of course, Microsoft would never contact you in this way to advise you of a problem on your computer. Sadly, we don’t live in a scam-less society, so we have to fight back. Keep in mind that our elderly are particularly vulnerable. Share with family, friends and neighbors whenever you hear of a fraud. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! dlm Vinny DiNicola is a Certified Senior Advisor® and owner of HomeLife Senior Care in Brentwood with wife Angela. How do I know if a Reverse Mortgage is right for me? A reverse mortgage is a lifestyle choice. It is right for many and not appropriate for others. How can you determine whether it is something you should consider? I have a client who hit the nail on the head. She said “I mentioned a reverse mortgage to my friend and she instantly said ‘oh don’t do that, it’s bad’ with no further facts about why it was bad”. My client said “that’s when I decided I would find out the truth for myself ”. Education is the key to life. Exploring a reverse mortgage is just like any other learning experience. We often like to start with our peers, our kids, or our siblings to discuss big decisions. It is perfectly natural. Unfortunately the FHA insured reverse mortgage product still has some pretty serious fallacies that continue to float around and therefore it is also important to speak to a specialist – face to face. There are so many ways to use a reverse mortgage and so many reasons why people consider a reverse mortgage, that a “sit down” is imperative. This meeting is where you learn how the program works, why the program works, and most importantly, will a reverse mortgage help you to meet

24

your goals. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to learn about reverse mortgages. Some people are very “comfy” with their current income but would like to travel, or buy a vacation home, or provide early inheritance to their kids so they can watch them enjoy it

November 2017 – January 2018

while they are still alive. Others may be struggling with monthly expenses and being able to rid themselves of their mortgage payment would make life much less stressful; while others may have healthcare needs or require home improvements to allow better accessibility. The reasons and the

goals are as varied as the colors in a crayon box. A little food for thought as you begin your educational journey. Who owns your home if you have a reverse mortgage? You do, just like you do now. www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Will reverse mortgage proceeds affect my income taxes? No, reverse mortgage proceeds are tax free. How can I take the proceeds from a reverse mortgage? There are several different methods of receiving funds from your reverse mortgage. The first thing we do is pay the closing costs and pay off any existing debt against the home including a first mortgage, and/or HELOC. After that, remaining proceeds are available to you in a variety of ways. You may take a lump sum, set up a line of credit, or set up a monthly disbursement to yourself. I hear reverse mortgages are expensive, is that true? As I said earlier, a reverse mortgage is a lifestyle choice. It is not inexpensive but the costs come right off the top of the loan amount, not out of your pocket. There are costs, and you should still consider them. It is important to remember, other than the required counseling session (approximately $150), the costs come out of the loan at closing. The benefits of a reverse mortgage most often outweigh the expense of taking out a reverse mortgage. I went on the internet and inquired about a

reverse mortgage. Oh My Gosh, my phone and my email blew up with people wanting to sell me a reverse mortgage. Unfortunately many times when you put your personal information on the internet it is sold over and over and over again. Some companies rely on this as their sole source of business. You are usually talking to someone in San Diego, Oklahoma, or Florida. The sole objective is to get you to sign papers as fast as possible. They will Fed Ex documents to you the next day and pressure you to sign them. I only have one word for you… Don’t. Even if they send “someone” to your home to assist you with the signing, that person is usually a notary, or a signing service. They are not reverse mortgage specialists and do not hold a Mortgage Loan Officer license. This is a decision that will affect the rest of your life. It is a big decision. Education, and time to absorb the information, is essential to the immediate success of your reverse mortgage but most importantly, the long term success of your reverse mortgage. I have been in the mortgage business for 35 years and offering reverse mortgages exclusively for over 10 years. I have spent my entire career in the San Francisco Bay Area. Call me today. I will come out to your home and

meet with you in the comfort of your home. We will explore what you hope a reverse mortgage can do for you. I will review all the information with you and then leave it with you to re-review, mull over, and you decide if it is right for you. If it is, give me a call back and we will get started. In the meantime, remember, this is what you worked for your entire life, enjoy every day!

Reverse mortgages are loans offered to homeowners who are 62 or older who have equity in their homes. The loan programs allow borrowers to defer payment on the loans until they pass away, sell the home, or move out. Homeowners, however, remain responsible for the payment of taxes, insurance, maintenance, and other items. Nonpayment of these items can lead to a default under the loan terms and ultimate loss of the home. FHA insured reverse mortgages have an up front and ongoing cost; ask your loan officer for details. Buying a Healthy Plant By: Debbie Gatt

ave you gone into a department store or nursery looking for an indoor plant? Some places are limited on selection. Others just do not look very healthy at all. What do you look for? You may think because the soil is dried up that the plant is also half dead. That may not be the case at all. Plants are better off with dried soil than overly moist soil. They will bounce back with some TLC and water. You need to investigate the health of the plant. First, look at the leaves. Do you

delta spirituality

It is in the Cards By Mary Cardenas

Dreamingorchids@gmail.com

W

hen I was asked about writing this article in reference to spirituality and psychics I wasn’t sure really where to begin. The more I thought about it, when someone comes to me for a reading and they've never had one before, there are usually some questions, along with some skepticism. When people ask me, “are you for real?” Yep, I'm the real thing. I was born this way. Then they will ask about the deck of cards before me. As I explain it’s a team effort of my cards and my spirit guides. My Oracle cards are best described as a tool that helps me narrow down what I'm hearing intuitively to a point so I can help answer your question. My guides were gifted to me at birth and they help by giving me clarity. Everyone has guides. During my readings my guides chat with your guides and together we get some picture of what is going on. One of the biggest fears I hear from people who have never had a reading before is addressing death. “Are you going to tell me I’m going to die?!”We all know death is something we will all face, but as for the details, I don’t go there. That’s between you and your higher power. If you ask about your loved one who is sick and if you should go spend time with them because you’re afraid of the amount of time they have left…GO. Not because I know something you don’t but because in the end none of us should squander any time we have with each other. If you feel compelled to spend time with someone who 28

November 2017 – January 2018

matters, to you then by all means go. If you’re curious about readings I suggest looking for a readers’ event. I’ve been on both sides of the table for decades. The best thing about events is most readers offer smaller readings usually at a lesser rate. This allows you to interact with a reader to see how comfortable you are with them before committing to a session. The internet has options for readings on various sites. I’ve met many of my clients through Etsy where I offer single question readings or more lengthy options. Relax and have fun with it. Don’t take any reading too much to heart. You must remember that life comes down to one of the most beautiful gifts we’ve been given – freewill.

Readings are fun tools used for entertainment purposes not religious ones, to help guide us when we feel like we need to clear up the image we have of our lives right now along the path you have been on. Kind of like that “lucky” penny some carry. Always remember you can change it all. Freewill is amazing. If you like your reading then keep on your path as you were and you could very well end up where it said you would. Remember this is your reading and you may leave with the impression that you want something different. You will always have the power to change what you’ve been told. You have been empowered with the knowledge to live your life so embrace YOUR power. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Loving Your Body at Any Age By Michelle McClintock Women’s Transformational Coach, NLP Practitioner, and Pranic Healer michelle@tunedintowellness.com

S

o you’ve got some wrinkles, a sprinkling of gray hair and things just don’t seem to be in the same place anymore. Whether we like it or not our bodies change, our memories aren’t as sharp as they used to be and we need glasses to read the menu. It’s how we handle this change that makes all the difference. Getting older does not mean you turn into a pumpkin that carries an AARP card and goes to bed at 7pm. We can choose to embrace it, or we can fight it. I say we embrace it and make the most of it! Women gain a certain confidence later in life that we didn’t have in our 20’s, or even 30’s. The pressures of life that we faced then were intense. We balanced careers, relationships, and raising kids. All while trying to maintain our looks, our toned bodies and perfect hair. It was exhausting. Plus, society puts so much pressure on women to look a certain way when all we wanted to do was put on yoga pants and not have to wear make-up. Once we are into our 40’s and beyond, many women leave behind the pressure to look, and be, perfect. We start to appreciate the curves of our bodies, the wrinkles that show we smiled a lot, and the gray in our hair is just some added sparkle. But sometimes we have trouble appreciating our new bodies. We feel younger than we look and it can be shocking when we look in the mirror and see 32

November 2017 – January 2018

our arms starting to sag, our bellies getting softer, and varicose veins appearing. So how can we embrace this new body that we have? Here are some tips to love and appreciate your body at any age: 1. Let go of perfection. Know that loving your body is not about perfection; it’s about loving the sum of all of you.Your kindness, your strong legs, your smile and your wisdom. 2. Appreciate your body and take care of it. Your body has taken you through a lot in your lifetime. Treat it kindly and show it how much you appreciate it by eating nourishing foods, getting massages, or wearing your favorite fabrics. 3. Don’t compare yourself. The old saying that comparison is the thief of joy is really true. Don’t compare yourself to other women, or how you used to look. Speak kindly to yourself every day. 4. Move your body. Find movement that works for the body you have today. Try yoga, hiking, or salsa dancing. Dare to move in ways you never have before. You just might surprise yourself and find a new favorite hobby. 5. Be daring. Try something new every month. Hang gliding anyone? Nothing will make you appreciate your body more than doing something you’ve never done before. The key is to learn to embrace your ever changing body and love it every step of the way.You are unique and so is your body. With every year come more wisdom and more beauty. Look at yourself with love and appreciation every day.You deserve it! “I love my body every day in every way” www.deltalivingmagazine.com

to actively engage and mentor other local churches to start RFK Camps. Their vision is for every foster child ages six to twelve to have a weeklong summer camp experience—leaving no one behind. The Royal Family KIDS Brentwood Camp is funded 100 percent by donations to provide camp services at a cost of $60,000 per year. The cost covers all meals and lodging for the campers and the staff that attend full time. Each child is given a variety of new items during the week of camp that they can take home with them and call their very own. Over the past four years, RFK has taken over 230 local foster children to camp where they are treated like royalty throughout the week. When the children arrive at RFK Camp, they are assigned a caring counselor, along with a surrogate “Grandma” and “Grandpa” and “Aunt” and “Uncle.” For so many of these precious children, this is their first experience with how a real family functions. Royal Family KIDS Brentwood hosts a major fundraiser each year in which many local businesses and individuals attend and provide with financial donations as well as silent auction items. Currently, a significant amount of financial contributions come from individuals. For the New Year they are looking to match $10,000. Some of their local sponsors are JDK & Associates, Movement Mortgage; REPOWER Solar, Victory Fire Protection, OneHeart2Homes, Ackerman & Towson Dentistry, Walmart, PAK Integrations, and Edwards Construction. “We are passionate about helping young people going to RFK camp because of our life experiences and the opportunities we were given growing up going and going to camp. We know what it means to be underprivileged young people so we along with the other volunteers spend this time, most of us taking a week off of work to see these children being loved on. Who deserves it more than foster children? We want to match funds for other families or businesses to financially support this wonderful organization like we do.” – John and Christy Kenney of JDK & Associates Rich Lopez of REPOWER admits he personally donates $500 This one particular week will forever change the life of not just one foster child, but all of those individuals who volunteer as well. You are giving a gift of renewed life to a child who otherwise has very little hope. Providing your time or a tax-deductible financial contribution will provide you with the joy of knowing that you have made a difference to children in need of love, care, and support. You will become a hero in their eyes. You can make the difference for one, a few, or many. dlm To get involved, please contact Directors Dave and Sue Bowers, at dbowersrfk@aol.com or call 925-200-8817. When asked why do I refer to my cosmetic business as “Changing Lives”? I reply, “I realize it sounds unusual to describe cosmetics as changing lives, but that’s exactly what it does on multiple levels. “Science is Beautiful”, that is how I describe these, non-toxic (EU) European standardized products that change lives. Since the United Sates doesn’t regulate cosmetic content as strictly as the EU, many irritants are incorporated into many other competing product lines. Younique products adhere to EU guidelines, having worked for me, eliminating irritation, redness, and improved my skin, they have also worked for millions of other women too.” Changing lives means so much more; did you know, Younique presenters are paid every three hours. We have the flexibility to work anywhere, anytime, and earn a living while living life. Younique has revolutionized the work from home industry. The Younique Foundation is a big part of changing lives; set up to aide in the healing and continued well-being of women who were sexually abused as children or adolescents and help them reclaim hope. Being a Younique representative means changing the lives of women they meet and those who have been helped by the foundation. For me, going from “Work at Home”

to a “Work At Home Mom” changed everything. “Opening the boutique was ideal for my life. Clients can bring their friends over to have a consult together, take photos on the Selfie Settee. It’s a fun and easy way to try the products. Opening my home up to other moms makes the experience welcoming and stress free allowing my clients to have the best experience. The boutique has become more than just consults, it’s a place for makeup tutorials, presenter training, and networking with others. It’s fun for friends and family. It’s much more than a business, it’s forever Changing Lives.
