When Should I Start My Puppy Training? By Shauna Fackler
waggingtailstraining.ca@gmail.com
T
o begin formal obedience training with Wagging Tails Training, your puppy must be fully vaccinated, which will be when your puppy is about 3-4 months old. Because trainers work with many dogs, and where dogs hang out, we could expose your puppy to many things. Puppy's immune system is not fully developed until they are 14 months old. Also at eight weeks of age, your puppy's mental development isn't quite ready to learn the more complicated puppy behaviors like Stay, come when called and leave it. There are things you can be working on that are just as important as obedience! Daily Routines • Where are the food and water dishes are located? • What times of day will they eat? • Where is the bed? • What time they go to bed. • What time do they get up? • Where do they go to the bathroom? • Where are the toys are kept? Crate Training - If you aren't 10
January – March 2018
already using a crate this the perfect time to learn. It will help a lot during potty training! Your puppy's crate should never be used for punishment. It should be a safe, happy place where good things happen! It's where the special treats and toys are given and a comfortable napping place too. Potty Training - At 2-3 months old, puppies are babies and won't have reliable control of their bladder for several months. (Tiny breeds are particularly challenging to housebreak and take even longer.) Establish the right pattern from the very beginning and Puppy will be housebroken as soon as his internal organs can cooperate. Remember to use a positive approach and gentle corrections. Acceptance of being handled - For example, brushing, bathing, clipping nails, cleaning teeth, giving
a pill, putting on a collar or harness. Make sure that your puppy can accept handling in any situation without being afraid. Your veterinary staff and groomer will thank you! Gentleness - Puppy's mother (and siblings) began teaching how to be gentle by persistently correcting Puppy when he plays too rough.Your job is to take over from them and show Puppy how to restrain himself when he plays with humans. Household rules - Teach Puppy which behaviors are allowed in your house and which actions aren't. Is she left to shred the toilet paper? Try to use gentle corrections, no yelling or spanking. Your puppy will learn to fear you if you are too harsh. Remember, they are just babies and only want to make you happy. Is she allowed to hop up on the furniture, or into the lap of your guest? It's your choice, but everyone in your family should follow the same policy, or puppy will be
hopelessly confused. As you can see, that's quite a list! All of these things will help you get a good start on training. When your vet tells you, your puppy is ready to start exploring the rest of the world when vaccinations are complete, it's time to enroll in school. Beginner training will give you the necessary obedience foundation for happy, healthy relationship with your puppy. You can either stop there or continue to higher skill levels and work your way to an advanced skill level. Wagging Tails Training's beginner group classes follow the AKC curriculum for the STAR Puppy Program to give you a solid start. Intermediate courses will make sure your dog's responses to your cues are reliable. It's also where we introduce you and your companion to the advanced skill set. Advance classes are to get you both ready for the American Kennel Club's, Canine Good Citizen certification. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Just a Country Paw Away By Glenda Kugler

L
ocated in Knightsen is a pet boarding business that once you and your pet visit,“Fido” may not want to come back home. Cinda Mahorney, owner of this country-living half of an acre facility states that “the dogs get plenty of play time here.” Started in 2009, Country Paws Grooming & Boarding facility is open seven days a week. Cinda with her 25 years plus experience with boarding and dog-grooming has quality time to allow her dog boarders the extra time to run around and have fun. She even gives each dog a complimentary bath and a cute bandana before going home. With a maximum capacity of 12; 12
January – March 2018
Cinda’s farm-like boarding facility guarantees a low-stress, relaxing and enjoyable environment for pets. A smaller environment allows more quality time and care. “Shy dogs do well here, because we are able to separate them if they are not tolerable of other dogs.” said Cinda. “We also match dogs up by size and temperaments, so some can play together. Pets get alone-time with us if needed. We even take pictures for the owners so they can see how much fun their pets are having so they don’t have to worry about them while they are away from home.” When bringing your pet for a stay, bring their own food as dogs do better when their diet is consistent. It is very hard to duplicate what foods that
they are used to at home. Cinda offers plenty of extra blankets and chew toys for your pet. She can also administer medications if need be. With only being a few minutes away from Brentwood, Oakley, Antioch or Discovery Bay, Country Paws Boarding also offers same-day grooming. Cinda’s clients rave about how comfortable they feel when they are away from their pets because they know they are in good hands. Cinda knows
what it is like as she owns several other animals such as horses, pigs and her dogs. So she treats her customers pets’ as if they were her own. The most exciting part about my job states Cinda is “getting paid to love, play and take care of dogs. It makes me feel good”. Call today for pricing, book you’re grooming or to schedule your free tour, bring your dog so they can check it out as well.

Love and
Grief for the
Angels in Our Lives
14
January – March 2018
By Maura Torkildeon
mtorkildson@att.net www.shamanicpawprints.com
I
f you are a frequent reader of Purrfect Pets, you were introduced to my chickens and cats in my last column. Sadly, since then we lost our female cat Avatar. It was an unexpected shock for our family. Avatar was only eight years old. She died in August as cancer consumed her body.We miss her terribly. Scamper, our other cat has also felt that loss keenly. I have been writing about grief a lot over the past few years. One of the precious gifts that Avatar brought into my life was comfort and presence after the loss of my father in 2014. She was a true healer kitty. Her soft gentle presence was both a balm for my grief and allowed me safe space to deeply touch into my grief. With her on my lap, softly purring and giving me her love-eyed look, I recognized I was fully capable of embracing my grief and to understand that grief honored my love for my father. Being able to embrace my grief rather than avoid it was part of her magic gift of love, which also allowed me to fully experience joy. I am so grateful to my angel Avatar for this wisdom. It was another huge loss for me when she died. I embraced my grief for her, as I did for my father. When we realized cancer was going to take her, I called on an animal psychic friend, Renee, to help with some decisions. This was such a comfort to me (I highly recommend it). Even though I was also deeply aware that it was Avatar’s time, I needed support. Sometimes we only have angels in our lives for a short time.
This was true of Avatar and confirmed by Renee. She shared that Avatar was graduating and so very proud of herself. I thought Yes! That is so Avatar. She was an incredibly gentle cat, but very proud. She was a queen, constantly reminding us of her royal status. Renee helped us understand what Avatar wanted and we fully honored her royalty with a regal send off. Renee said Avatar wanted me to sprinkle rose petals over her body after she died. Chills crept down my arms when I heard this. I had sprinkled rose petals over my father’s body after his death. Avatar knew, and she wanted to be honored in the same way. She knew and understood me. This was her way of letting me know. Renee said I would know when the time arrived for Avatar to go. (Renee’s website is www.shamanicpawprints.com) As her death approached, we tended lovingly to her every need and constantly told her how grateful we were for her beautiful healing royal presence in our life. When the day arrived, I called Rainbow Bridge to come euthanize her here in our home. When she left, I witnessed the release of her spirit from body. We created an altar around her body. A dear friend and priestess came to do ceremony the following day. Scamper sniffed her body and circled around. I made sure he was included. Even so, it took him several weeks to understand. He really hasn’t been the same since. He doesn’t like to leave our side. I can see this has been a major realization for him about the fragility of life. Even when ready, grief can land like a heavy weight and I wept hard and long, allowing myself to feel every sensation of my body as I grieved. This is how I process grief. My grief for her is equal to the measure of my love for her. Grief and love are not separate, but two sides of the same coin. Thank you Avatar. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

Essential Oils for Dogs
By Wendy L. Turner, CINHC, AADP wendylouturner@gmail.com (see ad on page 19)
E
ssential oils are naturally occurring aromatic compounds that are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They are incredibly potent and fragrant giving plants their distinctive smell. For a long time, essential oils have aided in the natural healing for humans and animals. These oils can be used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness for dogs. They can be used as single essential oils or in complex essential oil blends depending on what your dog needs. Make sure to research the oils you are purchasing to determine that the oils are therapeutic grade. These oils will be more expensive, but you will be assured that they are 100% pure essential oils with no added fillers. Some things to remember: • Dogs are more sensitive to essential oils than humans. Oils should always be used diluted, even when just inhaling. This is important to remember, 18

as we humans don’t dilute when inhaling. • Most issues that dogs have can be addressed with the inhalation of diluted essential oils. There are a few issues which can be addressed with topical use like skin issues, arthritis, bruises, strains, and flea control. • Only use essential oils with your dog when needed to address a concern, not to prevent a health issue. • Do not add essential oils to your dog’s food or drinking water • Avoid using essential oils with puppies under 10 weeks of age Before using any oil on your dog, try holding a bottle of it in your hand with your dog in the same room. Allow the dog to approach you holding the closed bottle, but avoid letting it actually smell the bottle. Remember that dogs are scent-driven animals, and you don’t want to overwhelm them with too much too fast. If your dog seems okay with the scent, you can let it smell from a diluted bottle. If all seems fine, you can diffuse it in a room, adding
a couple drops to a diffuser. If your dog shows no signs of irritation or other negative effects and you want to use it topically, then you can start with a single drop of oil diluted in 50 drops of a carrier oil such as grapeseed oil or coconut oil. Remember, less is more when you are dealing with essential oils and pets. I like to use essential oils on my dog’s collars as a natural flea deterrent. It works very well, and I do not have to expose my dogs to nasty chemicals. I also use oils to help with ear infections and cuts. My dogs get a little rambunctious at times and sometimes get cuts on their legs. I mix up some antibacterial oils with a carrier oil and dab it on the sore. The oil helps to kill bacteria and aids in healing. Oils are also good for anxious dogs or dogs that suffer from separation anxiety. If you have further questions about essential oils and your dog, please contact me at Glow Wellness and Herbs in Antioch. I will be happy to help you in choosing the appropriate oil for your dog’s needs. dlm www.deltalivingmagazine.com

In Pets We Trust By Jennifer S. Goldsmith Attorney at Law Jennifer@jsgoldsmithlaw.com

s pet owners, we don’t think of our pets as property. Despite the term “owners”, most of us would consider our pets family. I know I do. My dog, Shadow, has been with me since she was 9 weeks old. Before Shadow came home with me, the greatest love I had ever known was for my newborn niece as I held her in the hospital room just minutes after her birth. When I brought Shadow home, I felt a new kind of love; the unconditional love of a pet. I now proudly refer to myself as a “Fur Mom” and tell everyone that Shadow is a person too. In fact, when my (ex) boyfriend and I broke up, the only thing we argued about was Shadow. We had gotten her together during our relationship, and we both wanted to keep her. There was even talk about going to court over her to determine who’s “property” she was. But something about calling her “property” just felt wrong to both of us. So instead, we came up with a shared custody agreement. Yes, you read that right, a custody agreement for a dog. Over the years, my ex and I have gone our separate ways and Shadow now lives with me full time, but that www.deltalivingmagazine.com
custody agreement situation really got me thinking; there must be a way to protect Shadow if something were to happen to me. Luckily, in 2009 the law caught up with what we pet owners have known forever and now recognizes that pets are not merely property. This law allows pet owners to establish a trust for the care of our pets in the event that something happens to us. When we think about our estates, many people consider children, parents, grandchildren, siblings, even charitable giving options for their estate. What many people don’t realize is that they can also establish a trust to care for their pets. These trusts are legally enforceable and can ensure that your beloved pet(s) are properly cared for the remainder of their natural lives. Money set aside for your pet(s) will be used for their daily needs as well as medical expenses and other needs to maintain the lifestyle to which your pet(s) have become accustomed. Pet trusts, like other trusts, are extremely flexible and allow you to specify all the pertinent information for the care of your pet in your absence. You can designate the type and level of food, shelter, care, exercise, and companionship required for each pet in detail. Additionally, a pet trust allows for the Trustee (the person you have left in
charge of the trust) to take care of your pet(s) immediately after any event in which you can no longer care for your pet(s), whether temporary or permanent. There is no waiting period like with other forms of probate, such as leaving your pet(s) to a family member or friend in a will. This is the time of year when family is forefront in our minds. For pet own-
ers, family includes our pet(s) as well as our human families. In California, a Trust allows you to care for your family, including your pets. It is the greatest gift you can give to your loved ones and yourself; the peace of mind that everyone will be taken care of, even when you are no longer around to make those decisions day in and day out. dlm January – March 2018

s some of you know, recently I have been fostering puppies from the Antioch Animal Shelter. Most of them had Parvo. Dumped at the shelter knowing that these dogs had been infected makes me sad but I am glad that the dogs were put there instead of on the road somewhere. My one foster baby (Mini Me) that was just 6 weeks old did not make it. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge warm and loved. She was just too small and weak. I gave it my best shot. Then, came along: Dusty, Misty and Lizzy, 5-6 month old puppies. Same story as above, but Dusty had Parvo. When I picked him up at the vets’ office he was so weak, sick and sad. Keeping him quarantined, I nursed him back to health in a few weeks and now he is back to being a normal 6 month old puppy. Misty and Lizzy both sisters couldn’t wait to play with their cell mate. Since I am from the Midwest, we have harsh winters where a lot of diseases are killed. Even though Parvo sometimes does not die in the harsh winters, it is hardly ever heard of where I come from. It is mostly rabies that we worry about. Here in California the Parvo rate is somewhat high. Which, I do not understand because there are so many low cost vac24

(I am a lab tech in my other life, but will not bore you with all the logistics of all the disease) The younger the puppy; the higher the mortality rate. With Dusty he was in pretty good condition when he came down with Parvo, which helped in his recovery, plus all my love. Pets recover better in a home environment rather than a kennel place or a vet’s office. Plus, being highly contagious and very costly to treat in-house, most vet offices, and kennels choose to PTS some animals if they are drop offs or abandoned. For your pet, it can be very expensive and deadly, but it can be treatable at home in a most cost effective way. Depending on their age; health at the time of sickness.
