CAPRA Glendale Parks and Recreation is Nationally Accredited. The Glendale Parks and Recreation Department became one of only 139 agencies in the world to have received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). CAPRA provides quality assurance and quality improvement of accredited park and recreation agencies throughout the United States. CAPRA is the only national accreditation of park and recreation agencies, and is a valuable measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community.

Get ready to get your play on this July with City of Glendale and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month, which specifically highlights the vital and powerful role local parks and recreation, play in conservation, health and wellness, and social equity efforts in communities all across the country. This year, it’s all about discovering the power of play with your local parks and recreation facilities. From learning a new sport like basketball (see page 18) or archery (see page 28) to meeting your friends for a picnic in the park or a swim at one of our aquatics centers, your Glendale parks and recreation facilities are the places where everyone can play, regardless of age or ability. We are encouraging everyone to get out there to experience the power of play for themselves. To celebrate Park and Recreation month in Glendale, attend one of our events throughout the month, and make sure to enter to win some prizes along the way. Stay tuned for more information at glendaleaz. com/parksandrecreation. Erik Strunk, Director Glendale Public Facilities, Recreation & Special Events This is our second issue with our new design. Yin Yoga targets the deep connective tissues of the body, especially the hips, sacrum and spine. Yin asanas (postures) are more passive and mainly on the floor. Yin Yoga is unique in that you are asked to relax in the asanas, soften the muscle and move closer to the connective tissues, offering a deeper access to the body. Flexibility decreases over time and Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain your flexibility. Make this summer the best ever. H AV E F U N ! P L AY SA F E !
STRATEGY FOR A
SENSATIONAL SUMMER Summertime and the livin’ is easy. Hot fun in the summertime. There are as many songs about summer as there are childhood summertime stories to tell. If you’re looking to create more stories for you and your family this summer, Glendale is here to help. Here are some resources for your summer game plan. “School’s out for summer!” has been exclaimed by many Valley children recently, but many parents aren’t as excited as their children about the long summer months. Keeping children entertained and occupied, as well as keeping them safe are top priorities once the school year is over. Some children will be staying home alone during the day and many will be out on neighborhood streets riding their bikes or skateboards and spending more time on the playground. Parents: the city offers resources and programs to help make your jobs easier. Our drop-in recreation program offers a reasonable way to find activities for your child, providing them a safe and fun option with field trips, STEM programming, games, contests and more. You’ll find more information on page 11, or visit glendaleaz.com/ parksandrecreation/afterschoolprograms.cfm for information or to register.
20 | SUMMER 2017
Here are additional tips for families on keeping kids safe this summer, whether they are home by themselves, out on the playground, riding their bikes, and more: • If leaving children home alone, post your cell phone number and emergency numbers (police, fire, EMS, doctor and the poison control hotline, 800-222-1222) and a friend or neighbor’s number by every phone in the house. Also include your home address in case 9-1-1 needs to be called. • Prepare a snack or meal in advance for the kid(s), preferably one that does not need to be heated.
• If your children will need to cook, have them use the microwave and go over the steps for using it, being mindful of microwave burns. They should use potholders to remove food, remove lids carefully to prevent steam burns and test food temperature before eating. • Review your family’s emergency plans and make sure your children know what to do if the smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector goes off. Practice two escape routes from each room. • Show your children where you keep your first aid kit and how to use basic first aid supplies. • Check playgrounds where your children play. Look for age-appropriate equipment and hazards, such as broken equipment. Report any hazards to the school or appropriate local office. Playground equipment in the extreme heat can cause serious burns. • Dress appropriately for the playground. Remove necklaces, purses, scarves or clothing with drawstrings that can get caught on equipment and pose a strangulation hazard. Even helmets can be dangerous on a playground, so save those for bikes. • Bicycle/Skateboard/Scooter safety – make sure your children are wearing a helmet, no exceptions! Need to know how to fit your child’s helmet properly? Check out glendaleaz.com/education/Transportation_Hemet.cfm. • With lots of free time, kids will have many opportunities to surf the web, but there are internet predators out there. Parents can help reduce these risks by talking to kids about making safe, responsible decisions, and monitoring the sites kids are visiting; also make sure you ‘friend’ or ‘follow’ your child on social networking sites so you can check who they are talking to and what they are posting. Get more info at glendaleaz.com/police/education.cfm.

Three steps you can take to reduce your risk... Avoid mosquito bites!
West Nile virus is now in most of the United States. The most important way people become infected is through the bite of an infected mosquito. You can reduce your chance of getting infected by avoiding mosquito bites.
Adults are at highest risk. People over age 50 and people who have ever received a solid organ transplant are more likely to develop serious symptoms of West Nile virus if they do get sick and should take special care to avoid mosquito bites.
Apply insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing when you go outdoors. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent such as those containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Permethrin sprayed on clothing provides protection through several washes. Products with a higher percentage of DEET as active ingredient generally give longer protection. Don’t spray repellent on skin under clothing. Don’t use permethrin on skin. For details on when and how to apply repellent, see www.cdc.gov/westnile, and look for Insect Repellent Use and Safety in the Questions and Answers pages. Cover up! Wearing long sleeve shirts, long pants and socks sprayed with repellent while outdoors can further help prevent mosquito bites. Avoid mosquitoes! Many mosquitoes bite between dusk and dawn. Limit time outdoors during these hours, or be especially sure to use repellents and protective clothing.

What happens if I get infected?
A small number of people (about 1 in 150) who get infected with West Nile virus develop severe disease, called West Nile encephalitis or West Nile meningitis (inflammation of the brain or the area around the brain). Symptoms of severe illness include headache, high fever, stiff neck, mental confusion, muscle weakness, tremors (shaking), convulsions, coma, and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. See your health care provider if you develop these symptoms. Some people who become infected have symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms can last for a few days to several weeks. Call your health care provider if you have questions about your symptoms.
Mosquito-proof your home!
Screens: Keep mosquitoes outside by fixing or installing window and door screens. Drain standing water. Don’t give mosquitoes a place to breed. A small amount of standing water can be enough for a mosquito to lay her eggs. Look around every week for possible mosquito breeding places. Empty water from buckets, cans, pool covers, flower pots and other items. Throw away or cover up stored tires and other items that aren’t being used. Clean pet water bowls weekly. Check if rain gutters are clogged. If you store water outside or have a well, make sure it’s covered up. Encourage your neighbors to do the same.
