Removing Grass? Have a Plan Before You Start! Glendale water customers can receive a rebate for converting their grass lawns into desert-friendly landscapes. Bermuda grass is aggressive, so use the following tips to successfully remove it: 1. What to Use: The most effective way to remove grass is to carefully use an herbicide called glyphosate. This herbicide is absorbed through the grass blades and travels to the roots. Several brands of weed killers contain this chemical; check the label to make sure. 2. When to Treat: June through September is the best time to get rid of grass because it is actively growing. Apply herbicide on a windless day and follow the manufacturer’s directions. 3. Be Patient: Allow 10-14 days for the herbicide to work. It can take up to two weeks for the grass to turn brown. More than one application of herbicide may be necessary to completely kill the grass. Keep watering your declining lawn, though, to encourage new growth. Two weeks after the second spraying, scalp the lawn and spray remaining grass with herbicide. For more information about the City’s landscape rebate program, call 623-930-3760 or visit www.glendaleaz.com/waterconservation.
