Assessment With competency-based assessment, you don’t pass or fail. Rather, you will be assessed as either competent or not yet competent. To show that you are competent, you will need to complete all activities and tasks in the workbook, answer oral questions as required and demonstrate where required.

Let us begin.

Cleaning storage areas Most cleaning sites will have a cleaning storage area where the equipment, chemicals, consumables and personal protective clothing and equipment are stored for the cleaning of the site. The cleaning storage area may also include company documentation such as work schedules, company procedures and incident reports. The cleaning storage area may be a room (for larger cleaning operations), a storage cupboard (for smaller cleaning operations) or other areas separate from normal client functions. The area may include: • • • • • • •

equipment storage bays a chemical cupboard a first-aid cupboard slop sink desk a locker for personal effects shelving and racks or hooks

Cleaning storage areas must be well ventilated to prevent a build- up of fumes from the cleaning chemicals. They must also be kept in a dry condition to maintain the equipment, chemicals and consumables in good condition.

Maintain storage area

You should maintain your cleaning storage area so that it is well organised and clean if so equipment, chemicals and consumables will be ready for the next time you need to use them. This will make the work site more efficient and also safer as a well organised storage area where things are put away correctly to help prevent accidents. The following will assist you in keeping your storage area clean well organised and free of hazards: • • • • • • • • •

Have a particular place for all items to be stored Label shelves, cupboards and storage bays Store heavier items lowest to the ground Keep clear access to cupboards and storage bays Keep aisles clear Wipe or dust shelves and furniture regularly Remove waste and obsolete equipment regularly to prevent attracting rodents and insects and getting in the way Sweep and wet mop floors as required Check safety tags on equipment regularly

Security of storage area Your storage area must be secure at all times. You may have expensive equipment that could get stolen. The equipment and chemicals in your storage area are potentially dangerous to unauthorised and/or untrained people.

When you are cleaning, on a break or when you have finished work for the day always lock the door. Do not allow strangers to enter the storage area. Only allow access to authorised people such as other cleaners, supervisors or people who have obtained permission.

Storing equipment To assist you in keeping your equipment in good order, you should • • • • •

Wipe over equipment with a damp cloth, and then dry equipment before putting it correctly away in the storage area. Wind up all leads neatly. Store equipment in appropriate place Keep clear access for easy removal of equipment and to prevent potential injury to yourself or others. All wet equipment such as mops and cleaning cloths etc. should be washed and placed in a well-ventilated area to dry. Buckets should be emptied and wiped over.

Chemical storage Not only do you need to store your chemicals securely, but you also need to store them safely as some chemicals are very dangerous. Some chemicals have agents in them that cause a reaction when mixed together and they need to be stored in a secure and isolated location. They are called reactive chemicals and must be stored away from each other as they may: • •

cause a fire or explosion if mixed together, or release strong fumes and vapours.

Follow the instructions below when storing chemicals: • • • • • • •

Store the larger chemical containers lowest to the ground. It is advisable to use a colour coded storage system. A chart displaying the system should be on the wall in clear view All chemical containers must be clearly labelled and in good condition. Decanting and diluting of chemicals should be carried out in a wellventilated area to prevent a build-up of fumes in the air. When mixing chemicals, always follow your OH&S procedures and your MSDS or manufacturer’s instructions. Use the correct chemical containers and lids when decanting chemicals. Keep copies of MSDS wherever chemicals are stored or decanted.

Page 12 of 25 CPPCLO2035A - Maintain cleaning storage areas

Industry Skills Training Centre

Material safety data sheets (MSDS.) These are produced by the manufacturer of the chemicals used at your workplace. MSDS can vary slightly in appearance from each other. They provide information and advice about: • The ingredients in a chemical • The health effects of the chemical and first-aid instructions • Precautions for use • Safe handling and storage information MSDS should always be easily accessible wherever chemicals are stored or kept. The following is an example of Material Safety Data Sheet reproduced with the kind permission of ECOLAB Pty Ltd.

Transferring waste Avoid overfilling waste carriers. This will reduce the chances of spillage during transportation. Also keep within specified weight limits when transporting waste. If you are unable to transfer the waste to the waste unit due to work restriction, then promptly advise the appropriate person so alternative arrangements can be made.

Controlling risks and hazards in the storage area To control the risks in storage areas for yourself and others always control hazards wherever possible. If you cannot remove or avoid the hazard report it immediately to your supervisor or client. The following are some examples of hazards in cleaning storage areas: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Biological waste Broken glass Chemical containers labelled incorrectly Restricted spaces Dust Damaged equipment Extreme temperatures Fire Fatigue Heights Inadequate lighting Inadequate ventilation Chemical fumes Awkward manual handling techniques Slippery and uneven surfaces Isolated environments Leaks

Relevant information, symbols and instructions Useful items of information such as instructions, charts and explanation of symbols should be kept, filed or displayed in the storage area. They may be pinned on the wall, filed in a filing cabinet or cupboard, or kept in a folder. Information may include the following: Client specifications that explain the cleaning the client requires at the work site. Work schedules that explain your work duties at the cleaning site. Company procedures and instructions from your cleaning company on how to do things.

Page 15 of 25 CPPCLO2035A - Maintain cleaning storage areas

Industry Skills Training Centre

Occupational Health and Safety rules that provide policies and procedures on working safely. Time sheets that you need to fill in so the cleaning company can work out how much you are to be paid. Colour coded charts that explain the colour coding system used to store chemicals in your storage area. Manufacturer’s instructions and operation manuals that provide instructions on how to use cleaning equipment. Site communication devices, for example, whiteboards, walkie-talkies, noticeboards and communication books. These are used to communicate with your company or client or other cleaners who work in your area. • •

Records and information systems Training materials

If your storage area does not currently have this information, ask your supervisor or client to obtain it for you.

2

Control and maintain stocks of equipment and chemicals

Most cleaning companies will have an inventory system which clearly tells them how much equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and consumables they are holding at any one time as well as helping them maintain maximum and minimum holding levels in accordance with their company requirements. It will usually be the job of the manager or supervisor to maintain the inventory system but they may ask you for your input such as asking you how much chemicals you may need over the next month. The information you tell them is important and helps them also determine along with amounts previously used to determine their stock orders. It may be your job to monitor and reorder the stock levels in the storage area. If so: • It is important to plan ahead and re-order more stocks of consumables before your supplies run out. It is still your responsibility to tell your supervisor or client when your stocks of consumables are low

Turn to the back of the Book to complete Learning Task 4 Your daily usage of stock will allow you to estimate what levels of stock you will need in advance. Imagine how much toilet paper is used in your work area per day, and how much for one week. It can add up to a lot of toilet paper. Imagine what would happen if you run out? Do you think the client, public or your employer would be happy? It is a good idea to order stock in advance two weeks before you run out. Because you are the person who actually works with the stock holdings, your input and advice is important. Keeping your storage area well organised also makes it easier to see when stocks are becoming low.

3

Respond to emergency situations

Always respond to accidental spillages in the storage area immediately by cleaning them up to prevent potential injury to yourself and others. You would not feel very good about the next person who entered the storage area slipped over and injured themselves when you could have prevented it happening. If there is an emergency situation in your storage area such as explosion, gas leak, ďŹ re notify your supervisor, client or appropriate person and follow the emergency and evacuation procedures for the worksite.
