2018 groups collection telephone 0141 221 1668 glentonholidays.com
Dear group leader, Welcome to Go Travelling, jam-packed with exciting ideas for 2018. Our new Summer Collection brochure is dropping onto doormats and we’re absolutely delighted with the exceptional choice within its pages. Remember, groups can select any of these tours and we can operate the holiday exclusively for your club – cherry-picking the excursions that most appeal while changing the ones that don’t! Shorten or lengthen the holiday duration, add entry to an attraction, include a guided tour – almost anything is possible with glenton groups. We’ve got day trips to Arran, afternoon tea on the Clyde, overnight party cruises aboard world class ships and short breaks to fascinating attractions such as Kynren which takes you on a whirlwind tour of 2000 years of history or how about viewing the Terracotta Warriors? Look out for our special feature about cruising on the rivers Rhine and Mosel – a wonderful way for your group to get together. Of course groups do like to be beside the seaside so we’ve included coastal gems like Eastbourne and Southport. City slickers might fancy going downtown in Newcastle or Liverpool while Daniel O’Donnell fans wouldn’t dream of missing our Donegal Delights tour where we take our seats for the Opry Le Daniel spectacular, hosted by the King of Country himself! glenton groups enjoyed a bumper 2017 with more groups than ever trusting us with their holidays – and we look forward to being of further service to you.
our ratings and recommendations Based on customer feedback we’re delighted to continue our new ratings and recommendations to 95% tours we’ve operated in the past. messing aBout on the river By audrey connor A relaxing river cruise is the perfect get away from it all. Lazy days drifting past quaint riverside towns, ancient castles and lush countryside while the hard working crew serve delicious food and drinks. In fact, as you sail along, you only need to interrupt your sightseeing to partake of breakfast, mid-morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea then dinner. That’s the life! Choose between the MV Esmeralda and the Prinses Christina. Both ships feature a spacious and comfortable guest lounge, an extensive sun deck and a charming restaurant. Cabins are compact and cosy. Here’s how we got on... Each day we glided along the picturesque banks and through locks before mooring at the destination of the day. Ports of call included Trier, a city that bears testimony to 400 years of Roman civilisation. We caught the Hop on, Hop off bus that departs from the Porta Nigra – a city gate that has survived for two millennia - then got off at the amphitheatre where we travelled back to the days of gladiators and deadly duels. Back on the bus, we returned to the hub of Trier and stepped into the calmness of the glorious cathedral. Joining the silent throng, we

ascended the stairs leading to an illuminated glass cabinet which houses the seamless robe Christ wore before his crucifixion. Back outside in the market square, lively stalls brimmed with souvenirs and food vans enticed tourists with savoury aromas - time for a bite to eat. Next day our ship slipped into Bernkastel and I absolutely adored this little waterfront hamlet. Impossibly pretty with narrow, winding lanes edged with half-timbered taverns, oddly shaped dwellings, gushing fountains and quirky shops. Bernkastel oozes charm by the bucket load. We hopped on the local bus at the promenade and rumbled through the streets up to the castle. Here you can explore the ruins, have a drink at the bar and be bowled over by breathtaking views over the town and river. We chose to walk back down following a snaking path right into the heart of Bernkastel where we enjoyed some local wine in a pavement tavern. Another day, another treasure as our ship tied up at charming Cochem. We picked up a free map from the tourist office next to the bridge then took

the little land train that whisks you on a circuit of the town. Back at the bustling centre we caught the bus up to regal Reichsburg Castle where a guided tour commences from the gift shop every fifteen minutes. Amazing artefacts within its ancient walls include suits of armour, period furniture, Delft pottery and huge fireplaces. The high spot for me was when we entered the Great Hall to the majestic sound of Handel’s water music, delightfully adding to the sense of history and instantly transporting us back in time. As you leave the castle, it is recommended that you look back at the painting of St Christopher to give you good luck on your travels. Back on board ship, we tucked into dinner then joined the organised wine tasting night in a traditional cellar just a short walk away.
which soars over the river and up to ancient Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. We bought the combiticket which covers the return travel on the cable car plus entry to the fort. Once up at the bastion, we were hailed by stirring sound effects of gunfire, the clatter of hoof beats and rousing marching music – immersing you in a sense of occasion and a flashback to bygone days. Truly a feast for the senses and a fitting finale to our Mosel adventure! st christopher on the wall of reichsburg castle
Our final port of call beckoned and we were greeted by a melodic chorus of church bells as we sailed into two thousand year-old Koblenz. This inviting town is situated at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine and the meeting point of the two rivers is watched over by a mighty statue of Kaiser Wilhelm mounted on his horse. We wandered along the esplanade arriving at the terminus for the state of the art cable car 16
