Baby Boom AT GLENTON! The last few months have seen gorgeous new additions to the families of not one, not two, not three but four different members of Glenton staff! First up was Groups Assistant Louise Stewart, who gave birth to a second daughter, Lois Ellen on August 4th, weighing in at 8lbs 6oz. Hot on Louise’s heels was Groups & Good Companions Manager, Claire Jolly who delivered 10lbs 3oz Euan David on the 7th September. A few weeks later, Sindy

McCartney who works in Glenton’s hotel contract department was thrilled when her daughter, Lauren presented new granddaughter 8lb 1oz Arya on the 28th September. Finally, Danielle, daughter of Glentoneer editor, Audrey Connor pulled out all the stops to deliver Scarlett Jessica on 13th November, weighing in at 6lbs 1oz, giving Audrey her first granddaughter – and arriving just in time to meet the Glentoneer magazine print deadline!

GLENTON SALES SUPERVISOR Q. How long have you worked in travel and where? A. I have worked in travel over 20 years. I started out at Thomas Cook as a modern apprentice, then later progressed to senior travel consultant specialising in cruise. Q. When did you join the Glenton team? A. I joined Glenton in May 2016 as a sales agent with my main duties being answering calls and administration. I was promoted to Glenton Sales Supervisor in August this year.

I have travelled to many places over the years from Benidorm to Jamaica. As much as I love a beach holiday my favourite holidays are city breaks, Washington DC being my most memorable. Here we had a visit to the White House doing an east and west wing tour and came across Barack Obama and his family on the top floor when we were visiting!

Modern Apprenticeship... on a Learning Curve at Glenton

Here at Glenton we like to ensure all members of our friendly team are fully trained and knowledgeable so they are best equipped to advise you – our valued customers. With this in mind, two of our younger members – Morgan Marshall and Steven Gilmour have embarked on a Modern Apprenticeship. This exciting scheme means they learn on the job, working on real projects alongside experienced colleagues, thereby creating a skilled workforce that’s a huge benefit to our GLENTONEERS as well as being a real asset to the business. Morgan, 19, is studying for a Diploma in Digital Applications whilst 20-year-old Steven has his sights set on a Travel & Tourism qualification. “It’s given me a better understanding of computers and more confidence,” said Morgan. “I studied travel and tourism at college but I’m definitely learning much quicker at Glenton. I enjoy speaking to our customers and helping them as

best I can. I’m now looking forward to my visit to Fred. Olsen’s Black Watch so I can better advise our cruise customers.” The scheme is a great alternative to full-time college or university as it means young people earn while they learn and are better able to understand their key responsibilities within a company. Steven said, “I now have a better understanding of travel and tourism and I’m achieving much more on a personal level with new skills and qualities. I really enjoy being part of the GLENTON team, especially helping our customers in the shop. I’m looking forward to assisting at the bus stations and to my cruise ship educational visit.” Morgan and Steven will acquire life skills such as preparing a CV (although we hope they stay with us for years), time-keeping, teamwork, motivation and understanding Employment Law – all whilst working towards an excellent qualification. FOCUS ON Sara Sipek: Executive Chef, Fred. Olsen’s Braemar

Cruise ships are renowned for delicious and imaginative cuisine, ensuring your dining experience exceeds all your expectations while you sail the ocean waves. Here, Sara Sipek – Executive Chef on board Fred. Olsen’s Braemar – reveals how she started out as a talented cruise ship chef, confesses to a little faux pas, passes on some culinary tips and treats us to a tasty recipe! “I started working on ships over sixteen years ago as First Cook and I have now worked on twenty-eight different vessels, circumnavigating the world many times. I’ve been with Fred. Olsen since 2008, joining in the position of Executive Sous Chef on board Braemar. Four years later, I was promoted to Executive Chef on the Balmoral before transferring to Boudicca in 2014 and I’ve now returned to Braemar. Customers’ tastes have changed enormously during my career, especially as I started out in the American market where the clientele’s preferences are so different. The ship’s galley runs smoothly 99.99% of the time but I remember once running short of turkey, Brussels sprouts and roast potatoes for Christmas dinner. I won’t reveal which ship or what year as I hope the guests didn’t notice! For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed cooking and experimenting with food. I was in my fourth year at secondary school when I decided that I would like to be a chef. I am not sure when I first thought of working on a ship, but I was brought up by the sea so it’s in

my blood. I tried for quite some time to get a company to employ me, writing to about fifty operators – some wrote back saying they did not employ females in the galley! The recent keen interest in celebrity chefs and cooking in general has been good for food as more people now see that cooking is not difficult. What’s more, cooking from fresh does not take all day – you can make appetizing dishes in a short amount of time. When I am home I have time to shop daily so my fridge tends to be empty from one day to the next but every kitchen should have a good olive oil, pasta, eggs and passata (tomato puree). If you can invest in only a few things for your kitchen I would say that a sharp knife is first and then a good set of baking tins and pans. Of course, nowadays, people can put all ingredients into an expensive machine and press a switch but that takes the fun out of cooking and you do not get the same satisfaction as cooking by hand. Being an Executive Chef is a demanding job yet in my spare time, dare I say it, I do a lot of cooking and baking

as I find it relaxing. I cook every day at home and I eat vegetarian food, my favourite type of food is mushrooms, I can eat mushrooms with everything and I especially enjoy wild mushrooms cooked in crème fraiche on toast. I burn off the calories with long country walks in the Kent Downs. I’ve seen many parts of the world aboard ships and loved all of them for different reasons. However, if I had to choose a favourite I think it would be Barbados because everything is on the one Island – shopping, beaches, nightlife and good food. But wherever our ship docks, I always look forward to going ashore and exploring.”

Sara has shared a very easy recipe with us – along with a photo of the yummy pudding!

Chocolate Fondant Pudding chocolate – use 70% or • 200g dark higher cocoa solids butter • 110g sugar • 200g4 eggs yolks •1.5tsp vanilla • 4 egg extract • 60g plain flour •

Melt the chocolate with the butter in a bowl over simmering water. Whisk the eggs, egg yolk, sugar and vanilla until the mixture is light and fluffy and double in size. Sift in the flour and add the chocolate, slowly folding in with a metal spoon. Divide mixture between 8 pudding basins and bake at gas mark 6, 400F, 200C for 10-4 minutes

Coast to Coast: The amazing adventures of Glenton Palmer General Manager, Lisa Palmer (aka The Wife), her significant other, Andy and their faithful hounds, Meg and Fizz – as told by Andy Palmer! Friday 16 June: D Day minus one – the adventure begins, sort of… Arrived at the quaint little village of St Bees, Cumbria with The Wife, Lisa and our faithful mutts, Meg and Fizz then checked into nice accommodation in the hub of the town. We got talking to couples who had flown all the way from Australia and America to take part in the coast to coast walk. Just a perfect day, it can’t last!

Saturday 17 June: Day One – St Bees to Ennerdale (15 miles) England’s Coast to Coast is one of the world’s greatest long distance walks and was created by Alfred Wainwright. The route takes in two coasts, three national parks and two hundred miles of footpaths. Brave walkers enjoy a special camaraderie with fellow ramblers as they eat up the miles whilst feasting their eyes on chocolate box panoramas of lakes, mountains and picture postcard villages. Here’s how me and The Wife got on...

Hiking boots secured, dogs bouncing with excitement, then a cracking day’s walking – cool and overcast with a nice breeze while we tabbed along the high cliffs of the headland. Turned east and inland towards the sparkling Lakes. Weather got better so we stopped to eat lunch and watch a little cricket. This is the life. Time to head for the hills, tackling a decent climb with an even steeper descent. Simply stunning views were a fitting reward for our efforts. Bumped into fellow walkers from all over the world – New Zealand, Australia, Netherlands, even a bloke from Sunderland! Oh, and a pretty, young lady from

California. Walked into Ennerdale with the sun blazing so into first beer garden for a cold one as we cooled our feet in the beck.

Sunday 18 June: Day Two – Ennerdale to Rosthwaite (15 miles) A nice start strolling around the edge of Ennerdale Water, then onwards through the forest trail to Black Sail Hut – the most remote youth hostel in U.K. Route was long and hot so decided against going up Red Pike as The Wife didn’t fancy it and put her foot down. Had to do my knight in shining armour charging after the American lass who set off on completely the wrong track straight onto a 2000ft accent. Apparently, she doesn’t like map reading...bless. As the sun blazed, Lisa and I worked up a sweat heading towards Honister slate mine then the Lakeland town of Rosthwaite and our hotel. Bodies feeling the strain and even a little sunburnt. Early tea and a couple

of pints then straight to bed. Shorter day tomorrow but a decent climb! Dogs are loving the adventure and don’t make a murmur once we’ve stopped for the night.

Monday 19 June: Day Three – Rosthwaite to Grasmere (10 Miles) Set off feeling great after we’d decided to massage each other’s feet last night (good call). Was a little worried about Meg as she started to limp a little, but think it was just dodgy stones. Once we got onto the trail she was fine and bounding along. We powered upwards to Lining Crag, a steep incline of 2000ft which certainly gave the muscles a workout! The view changed somewhat as a bloke came walking down the hill with absolutely no clothes on. The Wife needed a moment. Anyway, we had two options for our route down the valley to Grasmere – easy or hard. I said to The Wife, “Well, we’re already on a similar level to the

hard route, so let’s give that a go.” So, off we trekked, across Calf Crag, Pike of Carrs, Moment Crag and Gibson Knott then down to Grasmere. Well, half way, The Wife aka Lisa Palmer went off her rocker! Seriously not happy and nearly fell over her bottom lip a couple of times. To add to the woes it was hot and not ideal for the dogs as no streams for them to cool down. Got into Grasmere and checked into our hotel. Once The Wife could sulk no more, we had a drink with California lass who had cheated and got a taxi! Onwards to Patterdale tomorrow which should be easier...

Tuesday 20 June: Day Four – Grasmere to Patterdale (9 miles) Although a shorter walk there was still a 2000 foot climb up along Great Tongue to Grisedale Tarn. I must say that The Wife took a sudden interest in map reading at this point and declared through gritted teeth: “If you take me over there, it will be a flippin divorce.” I got the impression she meant it. Anyway, we headed down the valley as the weather got warmer and arrived at hotel in good time to wash clothes although The Wife hanging a bra above the hotel entrance looked a little odd. News of the Aussie couple we met on the first night – woman fell and broke her ankle triggering a mountain rescue. Bed early as big day tomorrow – about seventeen miles but with a 2500ft climb straight away to get the lungs and legs screaming. Weather is about to turn though, which is worrying as tomorrow is National Naked Hike day – hoping to avoid frostbite on any extremities...

Wednesday 21 June: Day Five – Patterdale to Shap (12 miles) CASUALTY! Meg has had to retire from the adventure. In spite of massaging the dogs’ paws every night, Meg is struggling. Called my dad to come and collect her. Heavy thunderstorm while having breakfast but as we stepped out it stopped although still gloomy. Decided against the naked hike due to trip hazard concerns... Straight from the off, a long climb to Kidsty Pike which seemed to keep going up forever. Covered in cloud at the top so a little nippy. We then headed down to Haweswater Reservoir. Met a bloke called Donny from Arizona and walked the last six miles with him. He used to be U.S Army... said he was in the “Intelligence Battalion” REALLY? He was doing the walk in a pair of dodgy trainers and ankle socks! Nothing intelligent there, son! He had blisters on his blisters and most were bleeding... gave him some plasters. Tomorrow we head out of the lakes.

THURSDAY 22 June: Day Six – Shap to Orton (8 miles) Bumped into Pete from Wolverhampton, 76 years young and doing the Coast to Coast for the second time! Arrived in Orton early so had lunch on the village bench then went to the chocolate factory for a coffee. Naturally, The Wife had to try the caramel & honeycomb ice cream. Rang home and nurses Ashley & Leah Palmer (our daughters) have been spoiling Meg and she’s fine and dandy (think Meg is a drama queen!)

Friday 23 June: Day Seven – Orton to Kirkby Stephen (15 miles) Rain was coming sideways and boy did it

“Because we never seem to walk in a straight line – we are walking all over the place!” Bless.

Saturday 24 June: Day Eight – Kirkby Stephen To Keld (15 miles) A steady climb up 2250 feet to Nine Standings. Stayed dry but cold on top, about two degrees! Fizz was having a ball but The Wife got tetchy and said “Can’t we get the train home!” I promised her a Prosecco and all was well then smugly said that my feet were dry today. Two minutes later I was sunk to my knees in a bog! Lisa laughed her head off and could offer no assistance due to involuntary snorting. Made it to Keld then sat in the hotel bar sharing a bottle of Rioja.

Sunday 25 June: Day Nine – Keld to Reeth (15 miles)

Nonetheless, The Wife lost it a little today... a hissy fit started and boy, did Lisa come out with a belter! “This Alfred Wainwright fella must have been drunk when he walked this route,” says The Wife. “Why’s that, pet?” I ask.

A scorcher – got a little sunburn! Joined the Pennine Way for a short time and then up to Gunnerside Moor – a 19th century lead mining area where the old building with equipment was just abandoned. On to Melbecks Moor with cracking scenery as we dropped into the valley along the River Swale. Entered Reeth to a brass band playing on the village green – nice welcome!

Monday 26 June: Day Ten – Reeth to Richmond (13 miles) Downloaded Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs which The Wife listens to every week

(no signal yesterday on the Moors). Wrote in a few weeks ago hoping to get a mention “on’t wireless”! Well, half way through a field it came on and her face lit up – The Wife was chuffed to bits so a very agreeable walk to Richmond. Weather great so sat on the green with The Wife applying sun cream, she turns to me and says, “Oh, this smells like being on holiday!” “We are on holiday?” “Yeah, but I mean a proper holiday with sun beds...”

Tuesday 27 June: Day Eleven – Richmond to Danby Wiske (15 miles) Walked through woodland breathing in the smell of wild garlic then crossed at Catterick race course heading into the Cleveland Hills and Yorkshire Moors! Five miles down country roads took its toll so early to bed. Steady ten miles tomorrow and meeting our daughters, Ashley and Leah, which will be lovely – and they’re bringing Meg back to finish the walk – Fizz will be thrilled!

Wednesday 28 June: Day Twelve – Danby Wiske to Ingleby Cross (11 miles) Eleven miles of rain...not what The Wife had in mind when we booked. An hour into the walk and Lisa says, “I’m going to have a lager & lime at the pub!” Anyway she did, and a large white wine oh and then a bottle of red – only because we couldn’t check in until 4pm, you understand. Just waiting for Ashley and Leah bringing Meg then we’re all going out for dinner. Longer day tomorrow, hope the rain holds off.

Thursday 29 June: Day Thirteen – Ingleby Cross to Clay Bank (14 miles) Left this morning all chipper, waving the girls off, rain as we headed up a steep drag. Got foggier, thick as pea soup, soaking from the outset! Across moors, eventually to Clay Bank, couldn’t see as far as thirty yards. Hills, HILLS & more hills with no view. Tears and tantrums today, but that’s just me.

Friday 30 June: Day Fourteen – Clay Bank to Glaisdale (20 miles) My feet are in bits. Lisa is fine, must be all the piggy backs! Stopped at a pub in the middle of moors. First time I’ve ever ordered COFFEE in a bar. The Wife didn’t let the side down though, opting for an Irish coffee! Arrived at a point called “Fat Betty’s”. Tradition says you leave a food offering and take one. I left a banana and took an apple. Struggling, The Wife is knackered and dogs spooning. Made a mental note to have a word with the person who said it would be easy. Still, final day tomorrow! Family are meeting us at Falling Foss to do the last few miles...

Saturday 1st July: Day Fifteen – Glaisdale to Robin Hood’s Bay (22 miles) Weather cracking. The Wife and I got a trot on heading to Falling Foss where we were met by friends and family – finished the last ten miles around 5pm. Time to chill, play ball with the dogs, celebrate with a few beers. Not sure what our next adventure will be? But for now, it’s OVER & OUT!

Who am I

A singer, pianist, music icon and pioneering rock ‘n’ roll star, I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in February 1928, the youngest of eight children in a musical family. I learned to play the piano when I was only seven and three years later I was performing as a singer and pianist in the vibrant New Orleans music scene. I dropped out of high school at the age of fourteen to pursue my musical dreams. In 1946, I started playing piano for wellknown band leader Billy Diamond where my rare talents made me a sensation and I was soon drawing crowds on my own. In 1949, I signed to Imperial Records and my distinctive style of piano playing accompanied by a mellow baritone voice made me stand out in the crowd. My first release was “The Fat Man” in 1949 and it became one of the first ever rock ‘n’ roll hits. I found huge success in 1955 with a song that later happened to be the first tune John Lennon learned to play on guitar. Indeed, Lennon said that there wouldn’t have been a Beatles without me. The song in question was called “Ain’t That A Shame”. The following year I hit the charts again with “Blueberry Hill” then cemented my popularity with appearances in two 1956 films, Shake, Rattle & Rock and The Girl Can’t Help It. I was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. I died in my hometown of New Orleans in October 2017, aged 89.

Hailed as Britain’s “best ever pop singer” by Rolling Stone, I was born in London in April 1939 and named Mary Catherine Isobel Bernadette O’Brien. My mother was Irish and my father was Scots-Irish. My parents gifted me with a great love of music: father was a talented pianist and mother took me to watch musicals. I sang with my brother, Dion in clubs then in 1958, I briefly joined a girl group called the Lana Sisters and adopted the stage name of Shan. I appeared on the BBC and toured as a support act for Nat King Cole. The name you know me by wasn’t born until 1960 and it was then my career kicked off. In 1964 I released my first solo single “I Only Want To Be With You” which got to number four. I soon became recognizable by my blonde beehive and black eye make-up but remained insecure about my looks (I thought I looked like Burt Lancaster). I became a compere on Ready, Steady, Go and interviewed The Beatles. I recorded classics such as “The Look of Love” then in 1987 a whole new generation got to know me when I teamed up with the Pet Shop Boys for the single “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” I once heard a song sung in Italian at a music contest in San Remo. The lyrics were hastily written in English for me and I had my first and only number one hit. The song? “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. In 1998 I was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I passed away the following year from cancer at the age of 59.

Life aboard Boudicca... Along with Malcolm, my significant other, I had an absolutely fabulous holiday aboard Boudicca! Out on deck enjoying cocktails and live music along with the thrill of docking at the day’s port or sailing away to the next exciting destination. Sipping a G&T before lunch in one of the welcoming restaurants. Interspersing soaking up the sun with tucking into something tasty from the poolside grill then back to our loungers for a siesta. Pre dinner cocktails in the Lido Lounge with fun filled entertainment from Chris Ricketts and Jon Asher who were more than happy to play your favourites and even gave a hilarious performance of Ernie who drove the fastest milk cart in the west! Jon is very like Jeremy Clarkson – looks like him, talks like him, acts like him, in fact, nah couldn’t be, could it? Going for dinner and it’s so, so sophisticated strolling past the Rosario Trio

playing enchanting classical music as we’re greeted by the Maitre’D. Five-course a la carte meal with courteous waiters keeping our wine topped up then off to the Neptune Lounge for the main show of the evening. Live music, dancing girls, show guys, superb vocalists, captivating magician, laugh-outloud comedian and super-talented young lady playing a variety of instruments. Wednesday 6 September – sailing into the sunset! Unpacked and headed to the Lido Bar where all-knowing staff had Pimms cocktails ready. We sipped the first of many a cool drink out on deck as Boudicca set sail and our adventure got underway.

Thursday 7 September – getting my sea legs Delicious breakfast (love the Caribbean muesli) then time for the port talk on Lisbon where James Fraser advised about organised excursions as well as tips for independent sightseers. Don’t worry if you miss these talks – you can watch them on TV in your cabin. We opted for Lisbon’s hop on, hop off buses and got tickets from the Tour Office on Deck Five. Captain’s cocktail party this evening! Dressed in our best, we posed for a photograph with charming Captain Jula Sartela from Finland before he took to the stage to deliver his welcome along with some amusing one-liners. Slap-up dinner then a toe-tapping Swing music show. Malcolm found room for a nibble at the late night buffet in the Secret Garden…tut, tut!

Docked close to the historic heart of Lisbon. Hop on busses just outside the cruise terminal so did a sightseeing circuit taking in highlights such as the Torre de Belem gothic tower. Afterwards, we strolled through ancient streets, across Praca do Comercio, known as Black Horse Square then wandered back to the ship for afternoon cocktails. Another fabulous all singing, all dancing “Jukebox” cabaret tonight featuring hits from the 50s to the 80s then up to the Lido where cheeky chappies Jon and Chris entertained with easy listening sounds. Our late-night sail out of Lisbon along the River Tagus treated us to the spectacular vision of the city’s landmark April 25th Bridge and Christ the King statue illuminated against a moonlit sky.

were the Impossible Magic of Steve Price, an enjoyable and entertaining magician who interspersed impressive tricks with laughs a la Tommy Cooper. Next night, multi-instrumentalist, Anne Rayner enchanted us with music from around the world.

Wednesday 13 September – Toulon, the French Riviera

Tuesday 12 September – Barcelona, Viva Espana! Barcelona was outside our porthole when we woke this morning. We went ashore and strolled up La Rambla – Barcelona’s famous boulevard full of kiosks, cafés and living statues. At the top was the Placa de Catalunya main square where we joined a hop on bus. Sitting in the sun on the top deck we admired the striking streets and stunning architecture of this beautiful city along with the buzz of trams. We got off at the Gothic Quarter and meandered through the snaking alleyways, passing street artists and tapas bars, soaking up the very soul of the city. Back on the bus, we continued to Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia where we were wowed by its breathtaking magnificence. Back on Boudicca, we sipped a glass of sangria for the sun-soaked sail out of Spain’s second city in the company of the superb Chris Ricketts on guitar. “A Night at the Popera” was the main show this evening where gifted vocalist Bruce Anderson sang a mixture of popular tunes along with a touch of opera, all accompanied by the superb Boudicca Orchestra. Karaoke in the Lido, thought about singing but opted for a few Irish liquers instead...

A different mode of transport today as we got on the little land train and took a spin around the historic part of town. Toulon’s palm-fringed waterfront features the Genius of Navigation statue which stands on the marina pointing a finger out to sea. We strolled through the shady alleys, listening to the peel of the Clock Tower Bell as we wound our way to the Neoclassic Opera House on the Place Victor Hugo. Following the narrow streets with their pastel painted, wooden shuttered houses, we arrived at the bustling market and relished a real taste of authentic France. We walked the short distance around the marina back to the ship gazing at posh yachts bobbing alongside weathered fishing boats as we soaked up the sun. Time to sip a cool cosmopolitan by Boudicca’s pool.

Friday 15 September – Cannes, and the allure of the Cote d’Azur!

We glide into a scorching Nice and Boudicca takes her place alongside £multi-million yachts in the enchanting marina. Announcement at breakfast – strong wind forecast this afternoon, Captain decides to dock in Nice all day rather than sailing round to Monaco in choppy seas this afternoon. No problem, a local bus goes to Monaco, only twenty minutes away. The journey passes beautiful bay after idyllic cove till we roll into Monte Carlo. Monaco is an achingly beautiful city-state known for upscale casinos, a yacht filled harbour and the prestigious Grand Prix motor race that zips through its winding streets. We had a look around the opulent casino with its Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Bugatis parked outside then sauntered past jeweller shops with twinkling gems but no prices – if you have to ask, you can’t afford! Back in Nice, the strong winds suddenly gained strength. However, the gusts were warm as we walked along the famous flower festooned Promenade de Anglais, watching the white horses rise out at sea and roaring waves crashing onto the beach. We arrived at Albert I Gardens – departure point for the tourist train which took us through cobbled alleys with pavement cafés where tourists enjoyed drinks as they turned redder in the sun. Extra helping of treats tonight as we took in the soothing sounds of Anne Rayner then up to the Lido Deck for a toe-tapping

Aboard the ship’s tender for the thrill of whizzing across the water into the yacht harbour of glamorous Cannes, oh my word, can life get more exciting! Brimful of elegance and luxury, Cannes is famed for its international film festival – the place where all actors dream of ascending the twenty-four red carpeted steps of fame. Its Boulevard de la Croisette curves around the coast lined with fine beaches, chic boutiques and palatial hotels while the Esplanade Georges Pompidou features the hand prints of stars immortalised in stone. We arrived on the day of a yacht sales event. (Unfortunately, I’d left my credit card on Boudicca...) so instead we boarded the tourist train for a spin around town seeing the haunts of the rich and famous, posh avenues lined with haute couture boutiques, filming locations for James Bond movies, the eleventh century watchtower and up to the ancient Notre Dame de L’Esperance Church which was used as a prison during the French revolution. Back on Boudicca, the afternoon sail away was enhanced by music and a Harvey Wallbanger... tonight’s Love Me Tender show was a hit-filled tribute to the King of rock ‘n’ roll.

Saturday 16 September – Mahon, Menorca

Mahon was a bit of a blip weather-wise with a persistent drizzle. Still, we ventured out for a wander through the cobbled streets and plazas past the Santa Maria church and the City Hall with its Renaissance façade. Back on Boudicca, I stayed inside due to the rain so picked a comfy chair next to the Secret Garden – and just happened to arrive in time for afternoon tea with cakes! What luck!

Sunday 17 September – sailing to Cadiz A lazy, sunny day by the pool sipping a Blue Hawaii, reading The Girl on the Train, lunch at the poolside restaurant ...tonight’s spectacular was Britain Rocks, a musical journey from the 1960s with a razzamatazz finale!

Monday 18 September – Cadiz, Spain

We soaked up the sun as the hop on bus took us past Caribbean style pastel-painted buildings and endless golden beaches then

got off at the cathedral for a wander through the pleasant plazas. Late lunch by the pool, a sun soaked snooze and refreshing glasses of sangria. Out on deck with a Brandy Manhattan for our 8pm sail out of Cadiz – next stop, Liverpool. Fred. Olsen has a special event planned for Cadiz on September 10th 2018 when all four ships – Boudicca, Balmoral, Braemar and Black Watch will be docked in this ancient port city in southwest Spain on the same day commemorating the company’s 170th anniversary with themed entertainment.

Tuesday 19 – Thursday 21 September – sailing back to Liverpool Three relaxing days at sea, reflecting on all the glamorous places we’d visited, enjoying the ship’s unbeatable hospitality and entertainment. Blessed with hot sunny weather, right up to our last day aboard our floating hotel, we chilled at the pool, topping up our tans. A perfect end to an outstanding holiday.

Do not leave money or vital documents unattended on the coach/beach/cafés, etc. LOST OR ILL ON TOUR – Should you become lost during your holiday, telephone the emergency number at the foot of this page. In the event of you having to go to hospital, call this number or get someone to do this for you. HOLIDAY INSURANCE – Take reasonable care of your property and immediately report any loss to the police and obtain a written report. All necessary action should be taken to recover the property. Please refer to your insurance policy for full details. SEATS – Seat belts are fitted and you are required by law to have your belt securely fastened. Please occupy the seat you have been allocated. Swapping of seats is at the driver’s discretion.

HEATING & VENTILATION – If you find it too warm or too cold, please inform your driver who will try to make you comfortable. You can also adjust the ventilation above your head. TOILET – As this is only a small chemical toilet, please use it sparingly and for fluids only. SMOKING & ALCOHOL – Smoking including electronic cigarettes and the drinking of alcohol on board is prohibited. COMFORT STOPS – Please make use of toilet facilities available at these stops and use this time to stretch your legs. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) – To prevent the onset of a DVT, we recommend that you move your legs by doing the following exercises: • K eep the balls of you feet on the floor and raise your legs using your calf muscles. • P lant your heels and raise your toes – hold for five seconds then repeat. • P lace hands on the arm rests and raise your knees slowly, then lower them slowly. • Lift one foot, point your toes then rotate in circular motion – repeat with other foot.
