A local Dale Carnegie Success Story: Living Treasures At age 10, a young boy in Boy Scouts saw an ad in Boys Life Magazine to buy a monkey. He went to his parents and after several unsuccessful attempts, they told their persistent son that if he came up with the money, they would get the monkey. As a 10-year-old, he wasn’t sure how he would get this money, but he never doubted his ability. So, he started collecting bottles to recycle; he started asking neighbors if he could trim their yards; and after finding any and every opportunity to make a little bit of money here and there, this 10-year-old saved the money to buy the monkey. The parents kept their word and he became the proud owner of his first monkey. With his parents’ continued support and positive influence in life, this would set the wheels in motion for this young boy to some day have his own legacy to leave this world. Many successful business owners started off in life with a competitive edge; they chose to take the Dale Carnegie Course. One person who continuously gives tremendous credit to his success is the Billionaire, Warren Buffet. Similarly, another more locally situated, famous business owner who credits his success to Dale Carnegie Training is none other than Living Treasures Owner, Tom Guiher. Tom is the 10-year-old in the story and he would later take the Dale Carnegie Course to give himself the confidence to take the healthy risks in life that have made him the success he is today. Tom started his professional journey at the age of 10 for his father helping out at the family’s Culligan Water Conditioning franchise. In fact, it was his father who set the example for the importance of Dale Carnegie training. His father took it; it was a standard requirement for anyone in his father’s company to take if they were to rise through the ranks; and when Tom decided to go into sales at the young age of 20, he also took it. It wouldn’t be long before Tom decided to go to work for himself and would eventually open the first Living Treasures Animal Park in New Castle, Butler County. That takes courage and tremendous confidence to launch such a unique business, but Tom had plenty of both. A few years later, Tom opened the second Living Treasures Park in Donegal, PA. Tom Guiher, Warren Buffet, Zig Ziglar, Deepak Chopra and many, many other brilliant business leaders who have taken the Dale Carnegie Course all have one thing in common: they are success minded. Whether you are starting out in your career, looking to improve your “game” or starting a new chapter, consider joining the ranks of over 8 Million people around the world who took the Dale Carnegie Course. February 2019 at the Greensburg Courtyard Marriott is your opportunity to gain the confidence and the skills to write your story and leave your legacy. Utilizing Staffing Agencies By Domenic Deyulis, Worklink Staffing In 1999 two cousins, Mark DeYulis and Ed Menie embarked on a new franchise called Atwork Personnel Services in Ebensburg Pennsylvania. A year into the new venture Becky DeYulis, decided to help her husband and leave her career as a nurse to manage the day to day operations of the business. Her passion to help people and ability to connect with people has led to a very successful operation in Ebensburg. After 10 years under the franchise, the company grew from two full time employees and several customers in Cambria County, to 5 full time employees in the Ebensburg office, helping over 200 companies across Cambria, Blair, Indiana and Westmoreland County. The company decided that once the original franchise agreement came to end, they would venture out as their own company with their own brand, WorkLink Staffing. With strong ties to the local community and local companies, the transition was a success and the passion to link people and employers with the proper relationship was the steadfast goal. So why do companies use staffing agencies? There are various reasons a company could use a staffing agency. There is the simple convenience of outsourcing the hassle of going through the hiring process. For some companies it could be to provide immediate seasonal work. In today’s market, the ability to find quality employees can be time consuming and expensive. At WorkLink, we take the time to screen all applicants to gauge their strengths and understand their aspirations for their next job sothat we get our customers the proper match for the job needed. We are dedicated to building a strong local pole of employees seeking work. If we do not have an instant match for you, we will do the additional advertising and screening to try and get you a quality candidate that fits your needs. We drug test all employees and can provide most other clearances and testing specifically required for the company. Once a customer is satisfied with an employee, we handle the payroll and workers compensation insurance while that employee is on temporary assignment. And if a customer is not satisfied, we can provide a replacement for the existing employee. In November of 2018, WorkLink Staffing officially opened its second office in Youngstown, PA and plans to operate under the same model of being a company that is embedded in the community and to have a positive effect on the future of the Latrobe area and Westmoreland County as a whole. We extend an invite to anyone looking for change in their current job or a company that need employees or looking at an alternative hiring process to stop by our office at 4338 Latrobe St. in Youngstown or give us a call at 724-804-5488.

Member of the Month: Rose Style Shoppe Latrobe has evolved over the years - seeing the rise and fall of the steel industry and the revitalization of small businesses - but one constant in the community has been Rose Style Shoppe. This family business has been rooted in town for over 86 years and, since its opening in 1936, has provided a place for generations of women to find confidence in exploring their own, unique style. Ronda Goetz is the third-generation owner of Rose Style Shop. Her grandmother started the business in the midst of the Great Depression and although those tumultuous times, the store has thrived. Originally in the now defunct Miller Hotel on Ligonier and Depot Street in Latrobe, Rose Style Shoppe has found its permanent storefront on Ligonier Street in 1945. During this era, the store was primarily focused on bridal wear and was the most popular wedding dress destination for Westmoreland County nuptials. Over time, Rose Style has expanded to not only offer clothing but a whole selection of unique items such as jewelry, kitchen gadgets, table top items, and gifts. New and interesting items are often displayed in weekly Facebook Lives called, “Welcoming Wednesdays.” This interest with bringing vitality into the store extends to all facets of Ronda’s business, “ I walk in here each morning and I look at things with a fresh perspective. I find great joy in finding unusual things and things of great quality. I love connecting with my clients.” It is not only the exciting inventory that has drawn returning customers for many years. Rose Style Shoppe is also known for its family-style approach to business. “[The people] are one big expanded and extended family to me,” Ronda says. She has also committed herself to give back to this community, selling items in the store that have a social activism element to them. There is one item in the store that Ronda particularly believes carries this message. “The blessing bracelets have a meaning that when you put them on, you touch the bead and you think of reasons why you feel gratitude”, she says. “It keeps me grounded and I think we need to appreciate the little things in life.” On reflecting on her time working with Rose Style Shoppe, Ronda says that “Working with my Mom was my proudest moment in business. I am very proud of my community, and I am proud of all of the heroes like Mister Rogers. I’m proud of people like Joe Mosso, and people that go to work and apply their trade - like the bakery people. Everyone does their part to be a part of this thriving community.” Rose Style Shoppe has been a part of the Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Chamber of Commerce for over 66 years now - making it one of the oldest members! Ronda states that her parents were always Chamber members and that when they took over after her grandmother’s passing in 1950, Chamber membership became integral to the business of Rose Style. “It’s always a healthy thing to be a part of a group. It’s one more piece of the puzzle for the things that we need in business.”

Misty Enos Inspires Others to Take a New Journey in 2019 It’s never too late to start a new journey…

Misty Enos, Owner MPS Tax Service, Inc. I am living proof that it is never too late in life to start a new journey. I am what you could call a jack of many trades. I went to Pitt right out of high school and finished my dual degree in Communications and Psychology in four years. Right out of college I nabbed a great job at WTAE Channel 4 in Pittsburgh. It was my dream to be on TV; I was convinced that I was going to be Joan Lunden some day. Well, marriage and children came early and that changed the whole trajectory of my career aspirations and goals. My husband and son took center stage. So, I quit my career and worked nights doing what ever came my way. This included going back to school for a real estate license and certifications to prepare income taxes at my father’s income tax preparation business. When our son turned old enough to go to school, we decided it was time for me to go back to a full time career. For me, the TV thing just didn’t fulfill a passion anymore. I am a healer by heart, and wanted something more meaningful; something that would benefit other people. Next chapter, and I decide that I would like to pursue a career in nursing. Yes, you heard that right, nursing! What a completely different path then the one I was on since high school. I went to nursing school at the age of 32 and in a few years was working in the Neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. I eventually moved into the Heart center at Children’s where I had the pleasure of working with heart recipients and children with heart problems and their families. I was completely amazed at the life changing effect heart transplants had for these children who needed them to survive. I switched directions once again and took a job for The Center for Organ Recovery & Education, working with organ and tissue donors. I could write a book on my 10-year career with this organization and the incredible experiences I had. The donors and their families are heroes, as in their end stage of their life; they have selflessly chosen to give life to others. If you are not a registered donor, I would recommend becoming one. If you have ever witnessed the magic of renewed life, you wouldn’t hesitate. Anyway, I wore many hats throughout my tenure there, and was the Director of Communications for the past 6 years. Throughout that time, I travelled A LOT. Not only did I commute back and forth to Pittsburgh every day, but also I had a large territory to cover and traveled out of state often. That took a toll on me and left me with little time to spend with my family. So when my father asked me if I was interested in purchasing the family business, I didn’t hesitate. I have been working with my father in the tax business for over 17 years off and on, so I was already certified and well versed in everything income taxes. The business is celebrating 30 years this year and we are moving to a new location on Ligonier Street in Latrobe. The business was well served in Derry for almost 30 years and we are truly grateful to the residents of that community. We just grew out of that location and this one was a great fit. I do miss patient care and the transplant community, but I continue to use my passion for helping others in my new business in as many ways as I can. MPS, Inc. is a full service income tax preparation business. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and our warm welcome. If you are looking for a friendly professional to complete and file your income taxes this year, at an affordable price, please come and visit us or give us a call.

Third Stop on the Right: Four Tributes to Mister Rogers You Don’t Want to Miss

There has been a lot of excitement recently about the new Mister Rogers movie starring Tom Hanks. Of course most everyone knows Fred Rogers as one of Latrobe’s local legends. After all, he was born in Latrobe and was a Wildcat along with Arnold Palmer. Did you know, however, that there are still many tributes to both Mister Rogers as well as his show, Mister Rogers Neighborhood right here in Pittsburgh? Let’s check out four of the most notable ones. Idlewild and Soak Zone

Let’s start with the most local of the tributes. Right down Route 30 at Idlewild and SoakZone once stood Mister Rogers Neighborhood of Make Believe. It was a ride-through adventure based on the Neighborhood of Make Believe in the TV show. The ride operated from 1989 to 2013 when the Neighborhood received a makeover, turning it into Daniel’s Tiger’s Neighborhood -- a reboot of the original show but with the children of the original characters. Heinz History Center

The History Center has a wonderful display of Pittsburgh-related items which includes a Mister Rogers Neighborhood display. You can actually see the original X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat tree as well as King Friday’s castle. There are also the original puppets of Dr. Bill and Elsie Jane platypus, Corney, and Grand Pere. In addition there is an original set from the TV show including the bench at which Fred Rogers used to sit on to tie his signature shoes. Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh Not only is the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh a great place to take the kids, but it is also home to quite a few Mister Rogers Neighborhood relics as well. My favorite display is on the second floor and features several of the original puppets including King Friday, Queen Sarah Saturday, and Daniel Tiger. There are also several of Fred Rogers original sweaters -- which were knitted by his mother. Saint Vincent College Did you know that there is a trove of Mister Rogers related items at St. Vincent College? On the upper floor of the Fred Rogers Center lives a public, interactive display featuring Fred Rogers life and work. Also included in this display are artifacts from the Mister Rogers Neighborhood television show as well as other items such as his handmade sweaters and sneakers.
