GLLV ANNOUNCES 2015 GOLF CLASSIC IN JULY BY MIKE DUDURICH

I

n any endeavor, capitalizing on momentum is always a good thing. Whether it’s a couple good holes that lead to a good round of golf or a good week in the office that leads to an uptick in the bottom line, keeping a grip on that momentum, whenever it happens is always big. And that’s where the GLLV Golf Classic is as it heads toward the 26th playing of the event July 17 at Arnold Palmer's Latrobe County Club. Arnold Palmer will resume his role as honorary chair. The annual event is coming off one of its best years ever and celebrated that by presenting the Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation with a check for $5,000 on the GLLV’s weekly radio show on WCNS 1480. “The outing was nearly dead in the water,” said Jerry Supko of Commercial

Bank & Trust chairman of the event. “With the re-branding of the chamber, things changed last year. For the first time in years, we made some money. The community stepped up and it was nearly sold out.” Jessica Golden, the director of development for the Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation, expressed great appreciation for the gift. “It’s a tremendous honor and boost for our effort to boost the education program for our students,” Golden said. “It’s great for us to be a partner and this is a natural fit.” “We always enjoy welcoming to Latrobe Country Club the golfers who support such fine organizations as the [GLLV Chamber] through these outings and hope that they will have a great day,” Palmer said. “We’re absolutely hoping to build on that momentum and it seems like we are,” Supko said. “We have four major sponsors and we’re almost halfway sold out of the

field of 120.” An addition to the committee for this year is Katie Miller, who was a three-time PIAA girls golf champion at Hempfield Area High School. She went on to become a standout for the University of North Carolina golf team. “I love getting involved with events like this,” she said. “I volunteer for the First Tee in Pittsburgh, we’ve gotten involved in a big way with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. I’ve gotten to know David (Martin) and the GLLV staff when the new chamber got started and it’s very exciting.” Registration that day will be at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11:15 a.m. The round will be followed by a happy hour and dinner. Cost is $195 per golfer. A portion of the proceeds benefit GLLV's local education programs and Greater Latrobe Partners in Education Foundation.

'WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD' UPDATE BY MIKE DUDURICH

T

he GLLV Chamber’s new Neighborhood Visitor & Information Center is many things to many people. It is a bright, shiny tribute to the businesses and people of the area. It’s a showcase for history and memorabilia from the area. The VIC has proven to be ground zero for business transactions between members. And yes, it’s the home of the chamber staff that has constantly created buzz and excitement within the new GLLV organization. “I’ve been in a lot of chamber offices and

this one is so unique,” said Unity Township supervisor Mike O’Barto. “I’ve heard nothing but good reaction about it.” The new office officially opened February 2 and has had consistent traffic of local residents, visitors to the area and curiosity seekers.

But occasionally, someone comes through the doors and says “Wow, I didn’t know this place was here. This is the best-kept secret around here.” Don Orlando, vice-chairman of the GLLV board of directors and Director of Public Relations at Saint Vincent College, was behind the idea of moving from the office on McKinley Avenue in Latrobe to the present location in Sharky’s Plaza on Route 30. “Traffic and visibility were two big reasons for the move and we were fortunate to accomplish that in one year,” he said. “On McKinley Ave., we might have a CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

he first Spirit Airlines flight between the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport and Las Vegas was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 18 that included Westmoreland County, Latrobe and airport officials and the Latrobe-Laurel Valley Community Chamber of Commerce. “Starting this route continues to show this airport is viable for other airlines to consider,” said County Commissioner Tyler Courtney. “There’s an obvious benefit to the area as people start to realize what Westmoreland County has to offer.” Latrobe mayor Rosie Wolford helped cut pieces of cake that were offered to passengers as they checked in. “This is big, actually it’s huge for us,” she said. Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, had a big smile on his face as he viewed the early-morning activity in anticipation of the 7 a.m. flight. “We’ve been working toward this for a long time, it’s nice to see it come to fruition,” he said. “And it’s just a step in the right direction to bigger and better things.”

O

ne of the long-standing criticisms of the political process is the perceived disconnect between candidates for office and those who vote for them. The GLLV Chamber of Commerce’s Lunch & Learn on April 28 gave voters a chance to make a connection with candidates from across Westmoreland County at a “Meet the Candidates” event. The event was held at the Conference Center at St. Vincent College and was moderated by Mike Dudurich, media writer for the chamber. More than two dozen candidates had the opportunity to introduce themselves to GLLV members as well as the community at large. Once all of the candidates introduced themselves, the formal part of the lunch ended, but members of the audience were able to interact with the candidates and ask questions.

A look back, the steps forward, and now

U

ntil recently, ChamberChoice offered one of the lowest cost health insurance programs in Pennsylvania. And, it was available to members with as few as one person eligible to enroll in the program. The portfolio was enhanced with discounted dental and vision programs and boasted additional life insurance with no medical underwriting. With the inception of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance companies were held to new mandated coverages and benefits, restrictions to medical underwriting, and new parameters in determining a premium cost for an employer sponsored health plan. And with those changes, discounted premiums for health insurance were no longer offered. ChamberChoice now provides solutions based products and services to meet the unique needs of every member situation. There is no cookie-cutter approach to serving the small employer, the individual not insured by an employer, or the established employer with many employees. Our services begin by listening to the member situation, analyzing the current program, and understanding the budget parameters and objectives of every member. We offer reporting and record-keeping support and help define and report small or large employer status, and we include the all-important compliance services to avoid costly Department of Labor audits. Simply stated, we prepare, propose, implement, and monitor the total employee benefits package including the health insurance, now and through the evolving landscape of the Affordable Care Act. The ChamberChoice portfolio now offers a wide array of insurance products and services to meet the business needs of today, and for what the future brings. The total financial savings members gain is greater than any discount; found in placing the right health insurance plan complemented with ancillary and voluntary benefits, new administrative efficiencies that alleviate time-consuming and burdensome tasks on the owner or HR staff, engagement of employees to make informed decisions in health care and wellness, premium funding alternatives that offer budget predictability, integrated pre-tax administrative plans, a dedicated hands-on service desk that reduces employee down-time and increases productivity, and so much more. It is time to learn about the new ChamberChoice and what it can do for you. Contact the staff at the GLLV Chamber today.

T

he GLLV Chamber will host the 21st Annual Excellence in Education Banquet to recognize outstanding area 2015 graduates from Derry Area, Greater Latrobe and Greensburg Central Catholic High Schools; Dr. Robert Ketterer Charter School; and Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. This program salutes the top 5% of the graduating seniors in our local school districts, and will be held on Monday evening, May 18, 6p.m. at DeNunzio’s Italian Chophouse, Arnold Palmer Regional Airport (Community Room). Student honorees have also been asked to

invite a teacher of their choice to join them for the evening – a teacher (from grades K-12) who has made a positive difference in their educational achievement. These teachers will also be guests of the GLLV Chamber. Our Keynote Speaker will be Latrobe's Katie Miller, recently named the number one female businesswoman golfer in the Pittsburgh region by the Pittsburgh Business Times and as ranked by USGA handicap index. Katie was a three-time PIAA girls golf champion and went on to become a standout for the

University of North Carolina golf team. She continues to play the game at a high level and her family also owns and manages the popular Latrobe Dairy Queen. In order to make this program possible and demonstrate the interest and support of local business and industry in our schools, we are seeking sponsorships from local firms to underwrite the event. A $150 sponsor fee will cover the cost of the banquet for one student honoree, a teacher, one representative from your firm, plus some of the incidental costs associated with the banquet. Call for more information.

And members have offered items from their businesses as the popularity of the VIC grows. “When we do see people who come in and say they didn’t know we were here, we always ask them to tell their family and friends about us,” said Dolan Vogle, the chamber’s Ambassador Committee Chair. “Word of mouth is a big

thing for us as we try to support our members.” Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, has had a couple of occasions to send airport visitors to the VIC. “People have asked me what there is to do in the area, where to get something to eat and I’ve sent them right over to the VIC,” Monzo said. “We also have info about it on our big sign facing Route 30.” Perhaps Orlando said it best. “When you come in, most everything is free. There’s no admission charge and the advice you get is free. And in this age, that’s pretty remarkable not to have to pay,” he said. “Everybody has been very impressed with what is actually a mini-museum inside those four walls.”
