An average user picks up their phone 85 times a day, irradiated by the glow of screens, distracted by the constant media feed. Our overly smooth and polished environment is replacing tactile moments (such as turning the pages of a book) with taps on a screen. Yet, humans have an instinctive desire to gather information through the physical world. For spring 2017, fashion, product and interior designs acknowledge our need of feeling texture again, the need to run our fingertips over non-digital surfaces. Products and spaces are designed with soft, silky, or fluffly surfaces, creating a soothing feeling at the touch and generating a cushy and relaxed experience.

SECOND SKIN

The human skin provides inspiration for many designers, as it is non-homogenous, organic and adapts with the body. So far legislation dealing with biotechnology only addresses the handling of bodily materials for medical purposes; the question is for how long? In the far future, designs might not be developed in design studios anymore, but in laboratories. Designers and artists are asking themselves: “How do we want to feel in our skin? How does skin adapt to our environment? How to transform these questions into textiles, art and furniture? “ Skin tones, light pinks and beige colours, second skins, faux-furs, rubbers, leathers and wraping materials will influence the design industry for spring 2017.

A few years ago, sport luxe was the latest fashion trend. It wasn’t just a sport trend, it lead to a massive shift in the way people think about clothes and the acceptability of casualness.

ABC In fashion today, weFEMALE embrace-aOPHELIA level of informality that would have been frowned upon just a decade ago. Athletic wear or “athleisure” - the trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as work, casual or social meeting and has become an accepted norm. In Spring 2017 casual is cool! Keep it casual if you want to tap into modern fashion’s dominant mood. For occasion dressing, the trend is being interpreted via luxe materials that are cut into relaxed and sporty shapes, or into extreme casual wear for example pyjamas. SPORT MANNEQUINS In interior design, the relaxed design style emerges softer, and understated, with soft textures such as textiles, furs in pastel, white, off-white colours.

INCLUSIVE BEAUTY Traditional notions of beauty are still popular but there is a growing movement to celebrate humanity’s diversity in all it’s forms. Product, fashion designs and marketing campaigns are designed to empower all types of consumers; those previously marginalized are demanding their rightful place as equals, and brands should pay attention! This compelling reasoning is spreading to every aspect of our lives, even fruit and vegetables now receive a premium treatment with a fifth of fruits and vegetables not conforming to grocery stores’ strict cosmetic standards. Campaigns such as “naturally imperfect” aim to find a home for these “ugly” produce. Do you want to be on trend next spring? Give a home to your grotesque, deformed or disused piece of furniture - find the beauty in that product that has been manufactured wrong...

Spring 2017 will have a futuresque feel, as we look to the sky and future possibilities. Colours will be reminiscent of exploding stars and aurora borealis - optical flashes, blazing yellow, hot pink, vivid violet, acid green and black. Materials such as plastics, silver – gold finishing, crystal, ceramic, foil will be surrounding our sentinent beings!

ARCHAIC SIMPLICITY In recent times the Paleo diet has become a new trend, a diet based on the types of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans. Global travel and the blending of cultures encourages people to seek out connection with their roots, and to other cultures. The archaic simplicity trend for spring 2017 symbolises the relationship between mankind and nature, and recalls our ancestral habits and routines. It creates a connection with traditions and cultures, symbolised by a simplicity in volumes, forms, and a restraint in design, but with a pinch of rebellion. It is a non conformist approach to the primitive. Shoes, clothes, food, accessories and art are influenced by roughly textured natural fibre weaves with primitive rough-hewn stonework, shaggy fibre piles, or even inter-woven tree branches.
