INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVES

Fan Experience Prime Focus For Public Assembly Venue Managers

T

he human factor has replaced bricks and mortar as the primary concern for operators and designers of new arenas and stadiums throughout the world.

By Mike Ahearn Vice President, Operations Global Spectrum

I have found through my experience traveling the world on behalf of Global Spectrum’s consulting group that the fan experience in today’s venue world has nudged aside what had been a focus on the venue’s particular sport(s) and how the building was utilized. The older facilities tried to be everything to everyone. They seldom met the needs of the users, including tenants, operators, and guests.

pricing, and communications to our customers. The placement and design of the signage now happens much earlier in the design process because of the infrastructure requirements and the need to coordinate these boards with other design needs. Another area that is seeing a change is the approach to premium seating. People are looking for a more communal and interactive experience. They no longer want to arrive and go directly to a private box, never to see or interact with anyone else in the facility. Many new facilities are being designed to provide

In today’s world, the focus has shifted to providing a comfortable, highly engaging, and interactive experiences for the ticket buyer. Architects are now designing larger concourses for better circulation and an overall better customer experience. There are by far more points of sale and a wider variety of food options than ever offered previously, giving greater choice to the guest and providing a better overall customer experience. This in turn also helps to increase spending at the venue. More and more, video screens and TV monitors are replacing the way we communicate with our customer. The old design approach was to have static message/advertising boards anywhere possible. This was an afterthought in the design process that was typically left to the end of the design, close to the facility opening when someone realized that they needed signage. The new approach to communicate to our guests is through interactive and programmable video signage. The video boards give the advertiser more options and flexibility to customize their message directly to the consumer in our facility. In addition, it allows the facility operator to also manage and change menus,

open bar and lounge space outside or around the suites in response to the need for a social experience before slipping away to a suite to view the game. Loge boxes are also being incorporated into the design of many new facilities. These semiprivate boxes provide an upgrade to the typical “club” experience at a more affordable price than a suite. These boxes typically seat between four to six guests and provide private video monitors, loose seating, and counter space for food and beverage. In addition to addressing the needs of the premium customer, today’s new facilities also try to provide added amenities to the general public by providing entertainment and lounge space that does not require special memberships or contracts. Gathering spaces both inside the bowl and on the concourse where people can gather to watch live action and other televised sports in a lounge/bar experience is one of the newest trends. Moving forward, we can expect the use of technology within our facilities to increase by providing a more personal and interactive way to communicate directly with our customers.

Early adopter Beta clients include Stanford University, PlayhouseSquare, Select Your Tickets, and The University of North Carolina (UNC), which recently leveraged Mobile eVenue for its “11.11.11” promotion. UNC offered $11 tickets to three upcoming men’s basketball games against the University of Miami, Long Beach State, and Tennessee State. To participate and gain access to the link, customers had to be a fan of the UNC’s Facebook page. The promotion was a success with seven percent of all ticket sales purchased on the Mobile eVenue site. Also, UNC attracted more than 1,000 visitors to the mobile site, resulting in a conversion rate of more than 10 percent. Paciolan’s Mobile eVenue site streamlines the ticket purchase process to make it easier for fans to buy tickets on their smart phone and choose a delivery method. Additionally, fans can easily search events and view seat maps. Paciolan Mobile eVenue offers universities, performing arts centers, professional sports teams, and arena venues new opportunities to reach on-the-go fans that are already using their smart phones and social media in their daily lives. 

Borchard Regional Fairgrounds in Robstown, TX, will for the first time in its four-year history surpass $1 million in total revenue, which marks a turnaround for a facility criticized in the past for its lack of economic activity. Steve Waterman, Director of Commissioners Court Administration, said the fairgrounds is projected to close the 2010-11 fiscal year with $1.1 million in revenue, a significant increase from the $ 815,000 generated in 2009-10. Jason Green, General Manager of the fairgrounds, said the facility has seen an increase in activity over the past year, with 210 events the previous fiscal year to more than 250 in 2010-11. He credited nearly $7 million in improvements at the fairgrounds, including the installation of spaces for recreational vehicles and air conditioning in one of the facility’s exhibit halls, as reasons for that jump. “The future looks bright,” he said. “Bookings are looking great for the next fiscal year already. People know about us, and we’re getting a lot of referrals. We’re becoming a place that people know about. This is truly a regional facility.” Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Pusley credited Global Spectrum for its work in increasing revenue at the county-owned facility. “We’re certainly heading in the right direction with that,” he said. “For the most part, they (Global Spectrum) have stepped up to the challenge.” 

“Enchanted” Ice Show Sells Out Ice Venue In Abu Dhabi

“Best” Award, Again, For Fargodome The Fargo (ND) Forum newspaper has named the Fargodome as the “Best of the Red River Valley” in the category of “Best Live Entertainment Spot.”

The Abu Dhabi Figure Skating Team this year presented “Enchanted Forest on Ice” at the Abu Dhabi Ice Rink at Zayed Sports City. The event showcased one of the best cartoon character line-ups to ever perform at the Abu Dhabi Ice Rink.

The award, the second in as many years for the Fargodome, was based on votes from readers of The Forum and InForum.com, who voted for their favorite foods, events, services, and more in Fargo-Moorhead and surrounding area.

Sell-out crowds attended both days (December 9-10) of the amateur-only ice show. “The annual ice show is a key date on the Abu Dhabi Ice Rink calendar. The 35 skaters trained very hard all year to put the show together. The event is a community event and all profits go to developing the team, ice time for training, and getting the rink ready for such a fantastic event,” said Maria Gedeon, Director of Marketing at Zayed Sports City. 

“It’s good to be recognized to show that the Fargodome maintains a good, diverse event mix at the facility that appeals to a wide range of audiences,” said General Manager Rob Sobolik.

The UCF Arena in Orlando, FL, hosted a nearly sold-out crowd for the Dwight Howard Celebrity Basketball Game (November 13).

Since its inception in 2008, Light Up UCF has served as a popular destination for the Central Florida community to come and celebrate the Holiday Season. Fargodome Serves A Volleyball Winner The Fargo area high school volleyball sports committee served Global Spectrum’s Rob Sobolik, General Manager of the Fargodome in Fargo, ND, a challenge on short notice a few weeks prior to the event. “Is it possible to host the State High School Volleyball tournament at the Fargodome in mid-November?” they asked. Sobolik’s initial response was yes, but many things had to be done to prepare for it. Minot, ND, the original home for the 2011 State Tournament, could not be used due to recent flood issues; an alternative site was necessary. In preparation for the 2011 North Dakota State Volleyball tournament, the floor of the Fargodome was X-rayed to find places for six-inch anchor holes and sleeves for net posts that needed to be installed. During this process, a court had to be located, as the Fargodome does not own the necessary flooring. Fargo Parks and Recreation came to the rescue by providing a volleyball court. The challenge was answered on November 17-19. More than 11,500 people attended the tournament, an increase of 30 percent from its best year in 2009. The coach’s committee unanimously voted to put the Fargodome in rotation for future ND State Volleyball tournaments.   Comedian Jeff Dunham (second from left) is presented with personalized cupcakes for kick-off of his 2011-12 world tour at Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO. T Hundreds of area students helped “Fill the Dome” at Global Spectrum-managed Fargodome, Fargo, ND. In its four-year history, event has raised 400 tons of food and $300,000 for local food bank.

80 Tons Of Food For Community Fills Fargodome The goal: fill the Fargodome’s 80,000-sq. ft. arena floor with food! Since June 2007, the Fargodome has been the hub for Project Fill the Dome. It started with student council leaders from each of the Fargo-Moorhead area high schools, who wanted to do something big, something to highlight their senior years of high school. Together they formed the Metro Student Council Ambassadors and have raised a total of 400 tons of food and $300,000 in the last four years. During this year’s drive (November 21-22) hundreds of area students filled the dome floor with 160,021 pounds (80 tons) of food and received $80,000 in donations. The total is the equivalent of about 443,000 meals for at least 67,000 people in the region who rely on the food from this event. “Thanks to General Manager Rob Sobolik and the entire staff of the Fargodome for everything they have done to make this event another success,” said Jake Bechtold, one of the student leaders of Fill the Dome.

Pueblo Convention Center Cooks Turkeys For Deserving Families

Sandler Center Staff Helps Habitat For Humanity

The Pueblo Convention Center did all of the Thanksgiving dinner cooking as it teamed up once again with Pueblo’s Salvation Army to prepare and distribute 25 turkeys to deserving Pueblo residents.

The Global Spectrum staff at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach, VA, has been actively involved in the community since the building’s inception in 2007.

Eric Copeland, Pueblo Convention Center Executive Chef and Food and Beverage Director, has been involved with the Salvation Army’s Holiday food preparations since 2000. Since arriving at the Convention Center in 2008, he and his excellent staff have been a pivotal part of the holiday tradition.

This past September, the Center partnered with Habitat for Humanity to volunteer in the construction of a local home. Global Spectrum staff provided a hand with roofing, siding, and construction of a porch. The Sandler Center team volunteered for a full day to help build a house less than two miles away from the venue.

“Every year I make sure to set aside time during the holidays to help out the Salvation Army,” Copeland said. “Our staff does a great job in embracing the idea of giving back to our community and helping out those who are less fortunate.”

“We take such joy in being able to lend a hand to local families through an amazing organization like Habitat for Humanity,” said Office Manager Maria Castillo.” 

Throughout the year the Pueblo Convention Center also donates leftover food from the various events it hosts to area soup kitchens for the needy and homeless. 

he Roanoke Civic Center, Roanoke, VA, and multi-platinum country artist Jason Aldean teamed up for the sixth annual Concert for the Cure (September 30), which resulted in a record donation of $315,000 to the Roanoke Chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For the past six years, Aldean has chosen one location on his tour where all of the proceeds are donated to the local chapter of Susan G. Komen.

Near the end of the night in front of a very pink sold-out crowd, he played a video showing the heart-breaking story behind the creation of the “Concert for a Cure” and how breast cancer has affected the people in his life. Afterward, his wife joined him on stage and helped him present a record-breaking check for $315,000 to the Roanoke Chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The amount was more than double the previous record of $136,000. “This is one of my favorite things we do all year and taking it on the road to other cities has been huge in helping us bring in more money for Komen,” said Aldean. “All of the money we raised goes to the local Roanoke effort, allowing them to give free mammograms to those who can’t afford them. We’ll pick a different spot for next year and try to beat it. Seeing an arena filled with pink is just a really cool thing.” 

“HOW YOU DOIN’?” HYD Reminders For Constant Center Staff The “How You Doin’?” principles are very important to running a successful and smooth event at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, VA. The fulltime staff wanted to make sure the part-time staff and the customers were aware that they care about “How You Doin’?”. Recently, the full-time staff launched a “How You Doin?” branding campaign. HYD fatheads were placed in the loading dock where the staff clock in for their shifts. A HYD banner was hung in the back of house entrance visible to all persons who walk through (staff, artists, performers, stage hands, etc). An HYD bulletin board was installed so staff can see all upcoming events and announcements in one central location. Each part-time and full-time staff member was given a HYD button to wear on his or her lanyard for events. HYD clings were added to every box office window for customers to see. An HYD table skirt covers the marketing table in the main lobby of the venue.

As a way of introducing the skit task, the full-time staff planned and performed a rap to demonstrate the principle: Customer Comes First.

Colonial Life Arena Columbia, SC I wanted to contact you in regards to the outstanding customer service I received this past week when I attended the Taylor Swift concert on Friday. This is not my first time visiting the Colonial Life Arena, however, it was the first time that I had ever experienced trouble with tickets to an event. I purchased the tickets in April, and received immediate notification. Unfortunately all of the subsequent emails from Colonial Life went into my spam account. The week of the concert I still hadn’t received our tickets in the mail, and so I followed the directions according to your website. I was able to speak to two costumer service agents on the phone the day of the concert, and again when we arrived at the arena. Every single person I came in contact with was extremely polite and reassuring. We were able to have our tickets reissued within minutes. Thank you to everyone for calming this frantic mother of teenage girls!! We look forward to visiting you again for a few Gamecock basketball games this winter. Martha Chadwick

“How You Decoratin’?” At MassMutual Center The MassMutual Center hosted its “How You Decoratin’?” HYD event to welcome the holiday season. The MassMutual Center staff took some time to enjoy lunch, decorate the Christmas Trees in the Convention Center, compete in a holiday dessert bake-off, and take part in an ugly sweater competition. Everyone enjoyed getting into the holiday spirit.

FACILITY NEWS Festival of Chocolate Sweetens Up Palm Beach County Convention Center A chocoholics dream came true at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, FL, as The Festival of Chocolate made its first-time appearance in the South Florida market with over 6,000 people visiting the cocoa-based heaven. Some of the area’s best chocolate and confection companies delighted attendees with everything chocolate from truffles, cakes, and cupcakes to cookies, brownies, and ice cream!

A Sweet Pizza Invitation Palm Beach County Convention Center Marketing Manager Tiffany Faublas was looking for a unique invitation to send to the media to invite them to a special, invitation-only Sneak Peek to The Festival of Chocolate. In keeping with the delicious show, Faublas decided on a CHOCOLATE pizza to personally deliver to media representatives in the Palm Beach area. Although the deliveries took two days to complete, the chocolate pizzas created lots of chatter and interest among the media community.

Award-winning pastry chefs and chocolatiers hosted interactive demonstrations, sharing techniques and tricks of the trade. Guests also indulged in the many workshops, including chocolate and wine pairing, chocolate eating contests, cake decorating competitions, and more.

This ultimate all-chocolate, shopping, interactive, and educational experience is making its way to another Global Spectrum-managed facility, the UCF Arena in Orlando from April 27-29.

Miami Beach Renews In 2010, the sales team secured an additional $1.1 million of new business, hosted American Academy of Dermatology (19,500+), American Institute of Architects (17,000+), and Society of Critical Care Medicine (5,900+), and came in under budget by over $300,000. Additionally, since 2008, Global Spectrum’s professional team has increased customer survey scores across the board, including Sales and Marketing, Operations, and Event and Guest Services, resulting in an overall positive rating of 94 percent. Upon arrival at the MBCC, Global Spectrum instituted a new “How You Doin’?” guest services program to improve customer service, started an annual client users meeting to increase communication efforts with show organizers, implemented new innovative marketing solutions from an in-house marketing agency, digital signage, and mobile messaging platforms to enhance the attendee experience, developed in-house events and community initiatives, and launched a comprehensive green initiatives program, STEP UP, (Global Spectrum’s Total Environmental Plan) to reduce expenses for the City of Miami Beach. “Our dedicated team is focused on the goal of exceeding all expectations, and we are proud to have had the full support of the City of Miami Beach since day one,” Balsam said. “We look forward to continuing our productive partnership with the City of Miami Beach for many years to come.” 
