he Salina City Commission in Salina, KS, voted unanimously to approve a five-year contract with Global Spectrum to manage the Salina Bicentennial Center. “We are happy negotiations are through,” said Jason Gage, City Manager. “We are excited that Global Spectrum will do some good things for us at the facility.” Global Spectrum named nine-year company veteran Chris Bird as its General Manager for the Bicentennial Center. Bird formerly had been Assistant General Manager at the Liacouras Center on Chris Bird the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Deputy City Manager Mike Schrage said the agreement would reduce the city’s overall subsidy. Global Spectrum also will have the ability to sell naming rights to assets inside the building, but will not be allowed to rename the entire facility without approval from the city commission. We are excited about being here in this part of the country and think we will be very competitive,” said Todd Glickman, Global Spectrum’s Vice President for Business Development and Client Relations. “We are going to put Salina on the entertainment map.” Bird said Salina has “a lot of potential to bring in new acts or acts that haven’t been back in many years.” The Bicentennial Center is a venue that showcases sports and entertainment in an arena setting. Its Heritage Hall has more than 17,000 sq. ft. of meeting and banquet space that is column-free and can be configured to accommodate about any type of meeting needs. Since coming to Comcast-Spectacor as President of Front Row Marketing Services and Front Row Analytics in late October, I have had the good fortune to welcome many new ideas, Comcast-Spectacor executives, and sister-company efforts into my collective mix of interest and future discussions. These conversations involve the past, the current, and the future of Front Row Marketing Services and Front Row Analytics architecture and, more importantly, how the “us” can work for the “you or them” into the future. Because what really matters, as many of the political and capital assets are integrated into the greater Comcast-Spectacor world, is what this means to our clients. What clients want to know is what the “us will do for them!” Throughout my career, it has been a privilege to have worked alongside a great mixture of highly creative, financial, and organizational individuals from many different events and properties. From the Olympics and Formula One, to many professional leagues and sports, from local to national to global in scope, I have been most often asked what the ties are that bind the programs from sports to entertainment as it
thinking: to get “sticky” in our relevant sales channels by focusing on telling the story of our unique Front Row/Comcast-Spectacor Ecosystem with a Value Proposition Positioning Statement (VPPS) that uses prospect forward facing Command Messaging, which leads to connectivity to new opportunities for our existing clients and new clients. All marketers of any product must first know the inside of their ecosystem. This determines their strengths and weaknesses, if any, and more importantly, why their ecosystem matters to their respective clients. Our staff is now selling the assets of the relationships within the Comcast and ComcastSpectacor umbrella – no other agency of any kind has this asset base. Yes we still will be providing our high quality communications/events platform for Front Row Marketing and Front Row Analytics services, but we will also bring the benefits of our ComcastSpectacor ecosystem sister companies to the table for clients who want to take that step into the future. This is what makes Comcast-Spectacor dynamically different from all of the other companies. I’m looking forward to the growth and successes that Front Row Marketing Services and Front Row Analytics will achieve for our current and future clients. It’s all about resources!
CORPORATE NEWS Global Spectrum Starts “How You Growin’?” Internship Program The Internship Committee had a challenge to meet in 2011. As part of How You Growin’?, the Internship Committee was tasked with creating standardized procedures for implementing an Internship Program in all Global Spectrum facilities. The challenge entailed developing forms, formulating a Venue Implementation Handbook, creating internship “best practices,” establishing processes to identify job-qualified interns, formalizing recruiting, developing a process to communicate open internships, updating the www.howyougrowin.com internship webpage, and customizing the new HYG Orientation document for student use. In February 2012, the Internship Committee excitedly kicked off the program, starting with training General Managers on venue implementation. The committee reminded General Managers that the mission of the HYG Internship Program is to recruit and develop the finest students and help kick-start their growth and development in the facility management, entertainment, and sports industries. The Global Spectrum Internship Program was “designed to attract exceptional men and women who have a strong desire to be part of the world of sports, entertainment, venue management, and consulting. Learning from and working with the very best professionals in the industry, Global Spectrum interns get career experience that sets them apart,” said John Mansor, Employment Manager and committee member.
“Interning for Global Spectrum was the best decision I could have ever made. My experience with the Phantoms sales office during their Calder Cup run allowed me to network and stay in constant communication with the right people within Global Spectrum. This ultimately led to a full time position with the organization at the conclusion of my internship which placed me into a great situation for advancement,” said Gunnar Fox, General Manager of the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM. The Internship Committee will be looking to the spring and summer semesters to focus on refining the current aspects of the program based on venue feedback. Have questions? Lehigh University Selects New Era Tickets For Event Ticketing
Brock Jones, a highly respected 23-year veteran of booking concert acts, has been named to the new position of Vice President of Bookings. He will handle bookings for both Global Spectrum and Paciolan, Comcast-Spectacor’s ticketing software company.
“As our company continues its rapid growth, we felt it was important to create a new position and hire someone of Brock’s caliber to focus on increasing bookings and enhancing event schedules at the more than 110 venues our company manages around the world,” said John Page, Global Spectrum Chief Operating Officer. “Brock has the experience, knowledge, and resources to help us achieve new successes for our diverse roster of worldwide clients. We’re very excited to have him join the Global Spectrum team.” As Vice President of Bookings, Jones will work closely with Page and the company’s Regional Vice Presidents to bring a variety of performers to Global Spectrum managed venues. In addition, Jones will also assist Paciolan and its clients with booking opportunities, according to Page. “Many of our Paciolan clients also want assistance in finding opportunities to bring concert acts to their venues, so we too will rely on Brock’s ability to further
assist our clients in bringing incremental content to their facilities,” said David Butler, Paciolan Chief Executive Officer. Jones joins Global Spectrum after spending the past six years as Vice President of Bookings at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, where he was responsible for acquiring, scheduling, and overseeing all events at Bridgestone Arena. Under Jones’ leadership at Bridgestone Arena, Pollstar magazine nominated the facility for Concert Venue of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Jones began his career booking acts throughout the western United States as an independent promoter (Cutthroat Productions in Salt Lake City, UT) before becoming involved in venue management. His extensive career in facility management also includes Director of Events, Department of Cultural Facilities, Arts and Entertainment in Norfolk, VA (2001-2005); Director of the Colonial Theatre for the Performing Arts in Idaho Falls, ID, (1998-2000); and Director of the ASISU Presents at Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID, (1988-1989). Ovations’ 2012 National Meeting Features Learning, Good Food, Awards Ovations’ Senior Management and General Managers from around the U.S. and Canada met in January to participate in the 2012 Ovations National Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. During the meeting, attendees were updated by each of Ovations’ internal department heads, attended roundtable discussions on creative marketing and the latest culinary trends, browsed through a 70-exhibitor trade show, and actively participated in the various activities scheduled throughout the area. Since Ovations was established in 2001, the company has hosted this yearly meeting for the purpose of gathering attendees together to share and learn about trends in the industry, exchange creative ideas, and convey best practices. The meetings opened with a vibrant Cuban-themed cocktail reception and dinner grazing at tapas-style action stations, which allowed Ovations’ new team members to introduce themselves, and allowed old friends and colleagues the chance to re-acquaint and socialize. Business meetings kicked off the next day with presentations on company accomplishments and expectations for the upcoming year from each of Ovations’ internal departments. The balance of the business sessions were programmed on a roundtable format where
attendees could choose which sessions to attend. The first group of sessions included seminars on Ovations’ newest technological advancements, including TimeSaver OnDemand (Time and Labor Management System), KwikTag Paperless System, and Quest venue manager training. The next set of roundtables focused on Marketing. Bob Schwartz, Vice President of Marketing for Global Spectrum, led an interactive discussion about how to work with our venues to infuse food and beverage into their marketing initiatives. Ovations marketing consultant Jonathan Schmidt taught attendees how to better understand the demographics of their customers to ensure their marketing initiatives are hitting their mark. Ovations marketing department led an exercise in establishing a simple annual food and beverage marketing plan for each venue. The final set of roundtables were culinary focused. Ovations Regional Executive Chef Bob St. Lawrence led a discussion on “Kitchen Realities” and how to manage them. Duke Energy Convention Center Executive Chef Purvill Chaney provided some examples of culinary trends for GMs and RVPs to duplicate at their venues. Ovations also introduced Warren Dietel, a local entrepreneur and owner of Puff ’n Stuff Catering, who delivered an
exciting presentation about his extremely creative catering practices. Another successful but critical element of the meeting included a huge 70-exhibitor trade show that brought together Ovations vendors from all different product categories. While guests browsed the show and learned from the vendors, they sampled and enjoyed a variety of new and exciting food products and drinks the vendors brought to share. Quality networking time was purposefully programmed to allow the GMs and home office staff to engage with those venues in their region, as well as those venues in their line of business. These sessions were led by Ovations Regional Vice Presidents and allowed managers to share best practices, as well as new policies and procedures. On the final day, the Vinoy Hotel’s historic grand ballroom was transformed into a beautiful dining room where Ovations hosted an awards reception. Those employees with five and 10-year anniversaries, as well as those whose significant achievements allowed Ovations to have a remarkably successful 2011, were recognized. q Attendees at Ovations 2012 National Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL.

Friendly rivals and close friends since 1987, Fred Maglione, New Era CEO, and Jack Lucas TicketsWest, courted PCPA knowing that the combined services offered by both organizations would offer an unbeatable proposal. “The act of coming together to present this proposal to the organization was as important as the actual fulfillment of the contract,” said Maglione. “The assets of each organization combined created a proposal that none of the other agencies, not even the incumbent, could match.” PCPA is the region’s premier performing arts venue management organization, and is home to the Pacific Northwest’s and Portland’s finest music, theatre, dance, and entertainment. PCPA manages the Keller Auditorium, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and the Antoinette Hatfield Hall, which houses the Dolores Winningstad and Newmark Theatres and Brunish Hall. PCPA operates under the guidance of the Metropolitan Exposition Recreation Commission, a subsidiary of Metro, and is the fifth largest center for performing arts in the United States, hosting more than 900 shows and a million visitors annually.

Assistant Vice President for Business Services University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL p BankUnited Center Fieldhouse, Coral Gables, FL, hosts President Obama (February 23) for speech on American energy in front of 1,400 University of Miami students. Historic speaking engagement marked first time active President of the United States has spoken at University of Miami.
The BankUnited Center on the campus of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, welcomed President Obama to BankUnited Center Fieldhouse, a smaller Global Spectrum-managed venue next to the BankUnited Center, on February 23. The historic speaking engagement marked the first time an active U.S. President has spoken at the University of Miami. With 1,400 in attendance at the LEED-certified venue, students camped out overnight for their chance to hear the President discuss American energy and lay out his administration’s multi-pronged plan for a more energy-efficient nation that’s less dependent on foreign oil. It was an honor welcoming President Obama to our venue,” said Lorenzo Muniz, General Manager of the BankUnited Center. “By speaking specifically to our university’s students about an energy-efficient America, he is hoping to lay the groundwork for alternative energy uses the future leaders and difference makers of our country.”
6,000 At Faith Rally At NW Georgia Center The Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, Dalton, GA, hosted a winter awakening gathering, “Winter Ramp,” produced by Karen Wheaton Ministries. “Winter Ramp” (December 29-31) drew more than 6,000 young people. The event featured three days of intensive conferences, including worship, ministry through dance and drama, and preaching. Event guests included Damon Thompson, Perry Stone, Dutch Sheets, Rick Pino, and many more.
When the University of Central Florida (UCF), the second largest university in the United States with nearly 60,000 students, needed Curt Sawyer a new on-campus arena to accommodate its ever-growing commencements, we chose Global Spectrum, a division of Comcast-Spectacor, as a key partner. This $250-million visually-stunning project, called Knights Plaza and located on UCF’s main campus in Orlando, entailed constructing a 10,000-seat mixed-use arena adjoining the existing 5,000-seat arena, four 500-bed housing units, three parking garages, and close to 90,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Comprised of 31 acres, Knights Plaza is adjacent to the university’s new 45,000 seat football stadium and other athletic facilities. The crown jewel of the project is the UCF Arena, a facility designed to be host to major concerts (Alan Jackson, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry), family shows (Rockettes, Cirque du Soleil, Harlem Globetrotters), men’s basketball games, commencements, and a multitude of other shows and events. Since the UCF Arena’s opening in August 2007, the Global Spectrum team has continued to elevate its performance and weave itself into the fabric of the university. This performance has manifested itself in many forms, from the stocking of the local team with strong talent, continuation of strong budgetary oversight and cost containment initiatives, adroitly managing the complexities associated with the leadership of a university mixedused facility, to bringing in world-class acts designed to thrill not only our students and staff, but the Orlando community as well. At every step, Global Spectrum has proven to be a talented partner, and UCF is deeply appreciative of the excellent performance and strong relationship with this world-class company.
The “Winter Ramp” wrapped up a successful year of increased conventions at the trade center. Some of the 2011 conventions brought to Dalton and the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center were Jehovah’s Witnesses, The American Legion, ASI (Adventist-Laymen’s Services and Industries), and the National Collegiate Wrestling Association. “These events draw thousands of attendees and visitors to Dalton which increased hotel room occupancy in the community and increased traffic for local businesses,” said Shashank Gairola, General Manager of the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

A number of facility records were also broken in 2011. “Highest-grossing revenue month” was broken twice, once in February with $634,000, and again in November with $713,000. “Highestgrossing event” was set in May with Veteran’s Canteen Service generating over $204,000 in gross revenues. Budweiser Events Center Sets Event Record In Month of March
Record Financial Year For Sioux Falls Convention Center
Prior to IAEE Expo! Expo! in Las Vegas, Global Spectrum sent out pre-show mailers with Global Spectrum-logo poker chips affixed to them to preregistered attendees to promote the booth and activities going on there. The mailer read, “Global Spectrum Always Deals a Winning Hand – Bring this poker chip to the booth to enter for a chance to win an iPad2!”
Coming off the most successful year in the venue’s eight-year history, the Budweiser Events Center at the Ranch in Loveland, CO, had its busiest month ever, with 27 ticketed events in 31 days, during March.
Global Spectrum’s management of the Sioux Falls Convention Center in Sioux Falls, SD, resulted in a record-setting revenue year in 2011 with total sales of almost $3.5 million, an increase of $400,000 over the previous year.
“We themed our booth Vegas-style with a black jack table and poker chips to encourage people to come and gamble,” explained Shura Garnett, Global Spectrum regional vice-president and general manager of the St. Charles Convention Center. “The idea was that since you now have something tangible in your hand, you have a reason to visit the booth and engage.” Visitors to the booth were welcomed with a short game of blackjack and winners were being entered to win an iPad2. In the meantime, visitors were able to speak to Global Spectrum representatives about their events and potential fits in one or more of the company’s convention centers. Global Spectrum managed to attract more than 100 planners and organizers to the booth at the one-day trade show and ended with a variety of great leads for many of their buildings.
The multi-purpose arena in Northern Colorado was the site for hockey, football, basketball, concerts, a high school tournament, and Disney on Ice. The Global Spectrum-managed venue has consistently been the site for diverse and eclectic events since opening its doors in September 2003. However, the arena’s calendar is gaining occupancy; in addition to the most eventful month in history, 2011 was a record-setting year for events and revenue with the Budweiser Events Center earning more than $700,000 for Larimer County. “Thanks to the residents of Northern Colorado, we have been able to start 2012 just as strong as we finished 2011,” said Rick Hontz, Global Spectrum Regional Vice President and General Manager of Budweiser Events Center. The record 27 events in March included: 9 Colorado Eagles Hockey Games, 7 Disney on Ice Performances, 6 CHSAA Basketball Sessions, 3 Colorado Ice Indoor Football Games, 1 Harlem Globetrotters Game, 1 Trans-Siberian Orchestra Concert. The former record for ticketed events in a single month was set in March 2006 when the Budweiser Events Center was the site for 23 events.
“The significant increase in gross revenue is a result of creative selling opportunities, heavy customer interaction, and aggressively booking more events than the previous year,” said Kraig Pomrenke, Global Spectrum’s General Manager of the Sioux Falls Convention Center. “We worked closely with our clients to meet their needs and exceed their expectations. ” In 2011, actual total sales were $3,488,554 as compared with $3,055,936 in 2010. It was the highest revenue year for Global Spectrum since taking over management of the Convention Center in July of 2007. The increase in revenue also had a positive impact on the Convention Center’s city subsidy by decreasing it $41,395 from 2010. Over the past two years, the Sioux Falls Convention Center’s revenue has increased without significantly increasing expenses. In the same time frame, Global Spectrum lowered the city subsidy by 59.9% or $330,922. “Global Spectrum is very pleased with our 2011 results in Sioux Falls, especially in a time when our economy is still uncertain. It certainly reflects the hard work and creativity of the staff,” said Shura Garnett, Global Spectrum’s Regional Vice President.

Univ. Of South Florida Picks Global Spectrum To Manage Sun Dome
Gymnastics Event At Comcast Arena Sparks $25 Million
Last June, the USF Board of Trustees approved a major renovation to the 250,000-sq.ft. arena, including, but not limited to, the complete reconfiguration of the approximately 10,000-seat bowl area to oval seating, adding a state-of-the art center-hung LED scoreboard, adding additional concessions and restrooms on the concourse level, modifying and enhancing the southeast and southwest entries, and restoration of existing exterior concrete, and other cosmetic improvements.
The three-day (March 16-18) Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships at the Global Spectrum-managed Comcast Arena at Everett (WA) generated about $2.5 million in tourism for the city of Everett and Snohomish County.
The $36.5 million project also included the creation of a hospitality and viewing club area, and 10 loge boxes with a total capacity of 60 seats to be sold by the USF Athletics Department. Prior to his new assignment at the Sun Dome arena, Merritt was Global Spectrum’s General Manager of the WFCU Centre in Windsor, ON, since October 2009. Earlier, he was Assistant General Manager at the John Labatt Centre, in London, ON; an Event Manager at Global Spectrum’s flagship arena, the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA; and an Event Supervisor at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball.
Singapore Sports Hub On Schedule for Opening in April 2014 Construction of the new $1.05 billion, Global Spectrum-managed Singapore Sports Hub is progressing on schedule for its April 2014 opening. The design and build partner of the Sports Hub Consortium, Dragages Singapore, has completed piling, as well as the foundation of the new stadium. The focus is now on the superstructure. After more than five million man-hours spent on the site since August 2010, the level three-ring structure, which defines the kilometer-long Sports Promenade of the new stadium, is clearly visible. Global Spectrum Asia is currently operating the existing 13,000-seat Singapore Indoor Stadium, and will operate the rest of the new facilities when they open in two years. These include a 55,000-seat stadium, a 6,000-seat aquatics center, a 3,000-seat sports arena, a water sports center, community sports facilities, and a visitor center including a sports library and sports museum. There will also be a retail mall operated on-site by a retail partner. The Sports Hub is strategically located near Singapore’s bustling city center, which forms a magnificent backdrop to this new and exciting world-class sports, entertainment, and lifestyle hub.
The competition is the sport’s premier event leading up to the Olympic Games in London this summer, and was the largest international gymnastics event held in Washington since the 1990 Goodwill Games, according to USA Gymnastics, the governing body for the sport in the United States. Everett and Snohomish County welcomed more than 200 gymnasts from 17 countries -- Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, the Philippines, Russia, Thailand, and of course, the United States. Using the entire Comcast Arena facility, the men’s and women’s gymnastic championships were held in the Comcast Arena, with rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline at the Comcast Community Ice Rink. “Everett proved its ability to host a major event with the 2008 international Skate America competition at Comcast Arena. A visit during that event helped solidify that Everett was the right home for a big gymnastics event,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “The arena was up to the Skate America task, and so was the community,” Penny said.
Owensboro Breaks Ground For New Convention Center The City of Owensboro, KY, broke ground for a new $48.4 million downtown convention center and $20 million Hampton Inn & Suites convention-class hotel. Global Spectrum has been selected as the management company for the convention center, which is scheduled to open late next year. “Spring has come early and it’s such an appropriate time for this groundbreaking,” Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne told a crowd of well more than 100 people. “The Executive Inn (formerly located on the site) served us well. But we are replanting our convention center.” During his remarks, Payne said that a state firefighters association gathering with more than 1,000 participants has already signed up to hold a convention in the convention center in 2015, while the Green River Area Development District will hold its annual meeting featuring 600 people in the facility a week after it opens next fall.

FACILITY NEWS Sears Centre Arena Exceeds Budget, Sets Record Event Income in 2011 For the second consecutive year, Global Spectrum’s operation of the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL, has resulted in the building exceeding budget. The arena generated a record $2.1 million in event income, making it an all-time record. This is particularly notable as Global Spectrum exceeded the building’s best previous year by nearly $410,000 without the benefit of multiple sports tenants, which is traditionally a foundation for most medium-sized arenas. The building accomplished this feat by booking a combination of concerts, sporting events, and family shows, as well as non-ticketed and non-traditional events, such as The Rock and Worship Road Show, auditions for Simon Cowell’s X-Factor, and a Strikeforce mixed martial arts event. While hosting X-Factor and Strikeforce, the Sears Centre garnered national TV coverage on FOX and Showtime. The SCA booked a record total of 104 events in 2011, an increase of 29 events compared with 2010, exceeding the 81 events that had been forecast for the year. In previous years, the arena had never booked more than 99 events, making 2011 their most successful year in terms of event volume. Through aggressive sales, Front Row Marketing Services was very effective in increasing annual sponsorship and premium seating revenue. Annual suite sales nearly doubled and FRMS was successful in securing major sponsorships with Kia Motors, McDonalds, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Re/Max, and Great American Insurance, among others.
Pueblo Center Thrives On Promoting In-House Events
Livestrong Sporting Park Receives Awards For Security, Technology
The Pueblo Convention Center’s self-promoted events continue to grow in 2012. The convention center in Pueblo CO, kicked off the New Year by hosting its annual New Year’s Eve Party, followed by concerts, a bridal fair, and a Fat Tuesday Party.
Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS, was recently honored with two awards.
“Our in-house events are great ways for us to not only generate additional revenue, but also to interact with the local community and showcase our building’s versatility,” said Dean Dennis, Global Spectrum’s General Manager at the Pueblo Convention Center. The Pueblo Convention Center hosts a number of self-promoted events throughout the year, including a New Year’s Eve Party, Quarterly Wine Dinners, an Annual Bridal Fair, an Annual Fat Tuesday Party, Easter and Mother’s Day Brunches, Annual Pet Expo, along with various seasonal concerts. “Pueblo is a smaller market so we don’t always attract the major show promoters in the region,” Dennis said. “But we have had success in recreating and re-packaging on a local scale what other Global Spectrum venues are doing on a bigger foundation.”

The stadium was recognized as a recipient of the 2012 National Sports Safety and Security Facility of Merit award by ensuring a safe game-day experience for spectators. The award recognizes a facility that has gone above and beyond normal operations to help enhance the security and safety of their guests. The LSP staff uses 120 HD CCTV cameras to cover all public areas, which has helped to handle any issues both inside and outside the stadium. After one man disrupted the game by throwing something at players on the field, staff used the cameras to identify and remove that person and his friends within three minutes. The same cameras were used to identify suspects who were responsible for more than $20,000 in damage to government buildings, businesses, and homes in the area. The stadium also took the Bronze Award at the International APEX Digital Award Ceremony, beating out 200 nominations from 18 different countries in its category. Livestrong Sporting Park was the only sports venue recognized for its technology and fan engagement excellence.

Univ. Of Phoenix Stadium Hosts U.S. Soccer Teams After playing host to a highly successful U.S. Women’s National Team game in late November, the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ, once again hosted a National Team game when the Men’s squad defeated Venezuela in dramatic fashion with a goal late in stoppage time. The game (January 21) marked the second Team USA soccer match in a seven-week period at the facility, and saw the teams remain undefeated on the stadium’s natural-grass pitch with a collective 2-0-1 record. “Based on the success of the women’s game in November, our dialogue continued with U.S. Soccer about hosting a men’s game to correspond with training sessions in the Phoenix area, and it just made sense for the parties. I like to think we are able to provide U.S. Soccer with a fair amount of operational efficiencies, and marketing support, to make their events successful,” said Peter C. Sullivan, Global Spectrum’s General Manager/Regional Vice President. “From a training perspective, our market is ideal given our weather and facilities. I know our tourism community was very happy that both national teams trained in the valley and the 22,403 on hand for the Men’s game witnessed another thrilling U.S. win here in the desert.” As part of the workout regimen established under new head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, the U.S. Men’s National team spent the better part of two weeks training in metro Phoenix area and combined with Venezuela to account for more than 580 hotel room nights while in town. As preparations continue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Global Spectrum staff is working with U.S. Soccer to determine if University of Phoenix Stadium could play host to a Men’s qualifying match in the fall of 2012.

Green Speed Bumps Generate Energy At Roanoke Center The Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA, was the site of a unique demonstration for a new invention that uses speed bumps to create energy. New Energy Technologies, Inc., and the City of Roanoke introduced an innovative method to be green. By utilizing cars and portable speed bumps, a system called MotionPower™Express collects kinetic energy from vehicles through speed bumps so that the power can be transferred to other electrical devices. For the demonstration in the Roanoke Civic Center’s parking lot, about 600 cars passed over the speed bumps. The energy collected that day was said to keep an average American’s home running with electricity for an entire day.

As with regular speed bumps, MotionPower slows down a vehicle but also captures the car’s energy through the braking tires, which creates natural, green electricity. There is hope that this invention can eventually help power streetlamps, buildings, and other electrically dependent technologies. Roanoke is continuing its initiative to make and keep the city green.
