T

he Hamilton, ON, city council has unanimously selected the partnership of Global Spectrum and Live Nation as the new management team for Copps Coliseum and Hamilton Place.

“We view this new relationship with the City of Hamilton as a great opportunity for both Global Spectrum and Live Nation,” said Frank E. Russo, Jr., Global Spectrum’s Senior Vice President of Business Development. Copps Coliseum has a capacity of 19,000 for concerts and more than 17,000 for hockey. Featuring yearround concerts, dance performance, and live theatre, the 2,100-seat Hamilton Place is known for its gorgeous interior and spectacular acoustics, making it the ideal space to showcase any event. 

Record-Breaking Summer Season For Ovations Food Services Ovations Food Services had a record-breaking summer with two entries in the Guinness Book of World Records, one for creating the world’s largest cocktail at CalExpo and the other for building the world’s longest BLT sandwich at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in Las Vegas previously held the title of World’s Largest Cocktail, but Ovations’ “Calarita,” a name coined to combine the original margarita with the California State Fair, outweighed Margaritaville’s by a whopping 1,900 gallons, totaling 10,500 gallons! So what does it take to create the Calarita? A combination of 2,100 gallons of Cuervo Tequilla, four gallons of Cointreau, 2,800 gallons of margarita mix, 3,000 lbs of ice, 5,190 gallons of water and 50 gallons of lime juice, not to mention a custommade tank to mix it all in. Upon completion, the “Calarita” was poured directly from the tank, hand-shaken, and into 22-ounce souvenir shaker cups – available frozen or on the rocks to fairgoers. Question: How many individual drinks does one 10,500-gallon cocktail make? Answer: 135,000. Bottoms up!

At Harbor Park, fans usually flock into the stands wearing Norfolk Tides attire. On July 13, however, they came dressed a little differently; their shirts read “I LOVE BACON.” Back in March, Executive Chef Steve Gillette, a big fan of using bacon in recipes, decided to shatter the world record for the longest BLT Sandwich, which spanned over 224 feet. Partnering with the Norfolk Tides, the City of Norfolk, Sysco of Hampton Roads, US Foods, and two local companies, Flower’s Bakery and Smithfield Foods, Gillette set his plan in motion. Tables were set up on the concourse and volunteers piled the sandwich high as Norfolk fans lined up to watch all of the fun. Even Ken Young, Ovations’ President, put on an apron and gloves to help. Officials from the City of Norfolk and the World Records Academy confirmed that the record was indeed broken. Chef Steve proclaimed, “We blew past the old record. It’s official, our BLT Sandwich is 308 feet, six inches long.” So what exactly is the recipe for the World’s Longest BLT Sandwich? It’s a monster 1,839 slices of cooked bacon (400 pounds), 1,224 slices of fresh tomatoes, 816 leafs of romaine lettuce, 824 cherry tomatoes, 26 pounds of mayonnaise, 206 loafs of freshly baked French bread, and the hard work of over 34 volunteers.

Eager onlookers could hardly wait to have a taste of the record breaking BLT. In all, 800 individual proportioned sandwiches were produced and sold for $1 each. The sales and donations from Tides’ fans exceeded $1,300, which benefited Southeastern Virginia Food Bank. This event brought both local and national media to Ovations and the Tides. The local newspaper and two local television crews covered the event. Even a Los Angeles morning show on Sirius XM interviewed Chef Gillette, the BLT king. 

The Leadership Institute is designed to prepare high-potential employees for the next step of Global Spectrum leadership. The 12-month program is the core of “How You Growin’?”, Global Spectrum’s highly regarded professional development program. “The Leadership Institute gave me the opportunity to really look deeper into my current skill set – what makes me tick, what inspires me, and where I need to put my focus to develop my current strengths as a growing leader,” said Jason Toner, General Manager of Events at the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre, Windsor, ON, Canada. Kicking off the sessions was a highly competitive “Apprentice Challenge,” where four teams presented their business plans for a new “Facility Live” Entertainment District to a judging panel of Global Spectrum executives. Teams were scored on business acumen, revenue generating potential, content, concept, creativity, and overall presentation.

“The Apprentice Challenge was definitely a learning experience, considering that it not only required working in a long-distance group setting with fellow co-workers from different areas of facility management, but also that it was a project in an area in which none of us were experts. The opportunity to present our concept in front of so many industry leaders was highly intense, but very rewarding,” said

The Leadership Institute also included a twoday workshop called “Facilitative Leadership,” which was led by Dan Gallagher of Comcast University. The interactive seminar provided a twotiered learning experience on Awareness Building and Skill Development, which allows participants to explore and define the roles they play as a leader. “Facilitative Leadership inspired me to look at my relationship to my staff in a new way so I can help them grow in areas where they currently don’t excel. On the other hand, I can encourage them to celebrate their current strengths – and help them pass those strengths to others on our team,” said Toner. Dr. Bob Smith provided coaching on using the Clear Direction profile as a Leadership tool. Media training, including crisis communications role-playing, and a deep dive into finance rounded out the four-day experience. “The Leadership Institute was not what I anticipated it to be, it was even better,” said Leah Becki, General Manager of the Ryan Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. “I came out of the Institute with a new way of thinking about leadership and a new approach to daily responsibilities. I feel lucky to have been a part of the Institute and am fortunate to work for a company that cares so much about its employees’ growth.“ Back at their facilities, the Institute participants continue their training with webinars, individual development plans, stretch assignments, and in-facility exercises. 

Ticketing Intelligence Puts Real-Time Data In Your Palm Paciolan Ticketing Intelligence is a sophisticated business intelligence solution that brings together multiple data sources to create a complete view of an organization’s activities, including ticket sales, fundraising, marketing, attendance, concession, merchandise, or other third-party data. Arming venues with this real-time information enables them to better analyze data on fans, donors, and customers to make timely and impacting data-driven business decisions. This real-time data can be accessed using a tablet or iPad or while walking around a facility midevent. Clients with the ability to access this data in the palm of their hand can monitor all areas of their facility, eliminating the need to go to a back office and print reports.

Arizona State University is using this new Paciolan technology to help streamline fundraising, marketing, and ticketing reporting efforts. The Pac-12 school is the first in Division I to use the Ticketing Intelligence systems. This has proven to be a very powerful tool for ASU as it gives them a 360-degree, executive view of their donors, fans, and season ticket holders in real time. The Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA also implemented a solution to mine data from multiple sources. The Trail Blazers partnered with New Era Tickets to offer Ticketing Intelligence, combining data from disparate databases, including concessions and ticketing. The system afforded them the ability to add and develop new reports, including better reporting for season renewals and cross systems integration. The system also increased the speed of reports, including distribution and access control. 

Duke Energy Convention Center Introduces New App The Duke Energy Convention Center has introduced its new, all-inclusive app, “Cincy Live.” The app will further enhance the experience for both exhibitors and guests to the Center.

The app was designed to provide exhibitors and guests all the information they need, at their fingertips. From building layout to frequently asked questions, the app is beneficial to anyone needing to maneuver in the Center or find things to do while they are in Cincinnati. “The app is great for both local and out of town visitors, since it gives an overview of restaurants, shops, and attractions around the area. It contains extensive information on where to stay, ways to get around, and suggestions on how to explore the city,” said Ric Booth, Convention Center General Manager. 


FACILITY NEWS Third Annual Touch-A-Truck At Overland Park Center; 4.5 Tons Of Food Donated A turnout of 6,176 people attended the third annual Touch-A-Truck event at the Overland Park Convention Center, Overland Park, KA, on June 24 and donated 9,277 pounds of food, the equivalent of 7,876 meals, to the Harvesters Community Food Network. The event was free with a two-item food donation.

“Touch-A-Truck began in 2010 as a celebration of Overland Park’s 50th anniversary. Each year has been a remarkable success and as long as families keep showing up, we will keep hosting this great event,” said Global Spectrum’s Brett C. Mitchell, General Manager of the Overland Park Convention Center. “It’s one way we can say thank you to our community for another successful year.” Families who attended the event were able to see and touch a variety of their favorite trucks, including Overland Park Fire Department truck, Overland Park Police Department car and armored truck, Children’s Mercy ambulance, Santa Fe Tow Service truck, John Deere combine and tractor provided by the K-State Research & Extension Office, Harvesters truck, 20-ton dump truck and track hoe from Turner Construction, 24th Marine Regiment and their HMMWV, Bob Allen Ford truck, First Student school bus, and more. 

Happy Harry’s RibFest Breaks Fargodome Records The Fargodome in Fargo, ND, once again set ticket sales and brew records at its 17th Annual Happy Harry’s RibFest (June 6-9). “Our staff worked extremely hard to make this year’s RibFest the best ever,” said Rob Sobolik, Global Spectrum’s General Manager for the Fargodome. “We’re very proud that our RibFest has become the standard for this type of summer festival in our region.” Considered by many to be the unofficial start to summer in Fargo, Happy Harry’s RibFest

Teaming up with a local radio group, Go Radio Broadcasting, the Fargodome secured four nights of national headlining entertainment, featuring James Otto, Foghat, Craig Morgan, and The Cherry Pie Tour, featuring Warrant, Trixter, and Firehouse. The four-day concert attendance of 55,490 was the highest in RibFest history. With hot days and warm nights, the Fargodome’s Food and Beverage Department set their own record, selling 1,019,156 total ounces of beer and beating their previous sales record by over $100,000. 

Assistant Vice President for Administration, Division of Administration and Finance, Indiana University of Pennsylvania In July 2009, after a national search, Indiana University of Pennsylvania selected Global Spectrum as the facility management and marketing firm Sam Phillips for what would soon become the conference and entertainment crown jewel of our region, the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Kovalchick Complex, with its Grand Opening accomplished in March 2011, has become central to the growth of conference activity, entertainment, and indoor athletic events benefiting the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus and Western Pennsylvania regional communities. The complex consists of multi-use adaptable space in the form of the 5,000-seat Ed Fry Arena, the 23,000 sq. ft. Conference Center and Corporate Training Center, and the 630-seat Toretti Auditorium. Global Spectrum, tasked with bringing the University community and the greater regional community together for entertainment, developed a high-quality and diverse schedule of arena entertainment that has consisted of multiple concerts as well as first-rate family shows such as the Harlem Globetrotters and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The fan friendly, family atmosphere became immediately apparent as the University and local community together have openly embraced these events and the venue. In a collaborative effort with IUP Athletics, Global Spectrum utilized its knowledge and expertise in the field to assist with developing marketing strategies, enhancing promotions, and most of all developing more efficient game management practices. This successful planning partnership assisted IUP Athletics in generating an estimated 225 percent increase in ticket revenue over the prior year. Aside from the arena events, successful coordination of numerous conference groups by Global Spectrum has generated high levels of guest traffic through the facility and has proven the multi-use capabilities of the facility. The feedback received by planners and attendees of these types of events has been overwhelmingly positive, which is a direct reflection of the Global Spectrum “How You Doin’?” program and the emphasis put on customer satisfaction at the Kovalchick Complex. We look forward to continuing our positive relationship with Global Spectrum as we strive to make the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex the choice destination for entertainment, meetings, conventions, and trainings in Western Pennsylvania for many years to come. 

Iowa Events Center’s Sweet Holiday Open House Global Spectrum’s Iowa Events Center, Des Moines, IA, hosted a unique holiday open house luncheon (August 23) for potential clients to learn about the variety of holiday party options offered at the facility.

The Global Spectrum-managed Owensboro Convention Center, which is now under construction and will open in December 2013, has booked its first convention. The Green River Firefighters Association signed a multi-year contract to host the GRFA Officers School at the Owensboro Convention Center beginning in February 2015. The Officer’s School, hosted by the Green River Firefighters Association, is one of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s largest training conferences boasting nearly 1,200 attendees over a three-and-a-half day period. GRFA signed a three-year contract for the school for 2015, 2016, and 2017. “This event is precisely why Owensboro is building this first-class facility to host these types of positive economic events in the community,” said Dean Dennis, Global Spectrum’s General Manager of the Owensboro Convention Center. “We are thrilled to have our first signed convention contract and look forward to many more as we move closer to the 2013 opening.” The four-day convention will use nearly 1,500 local hotel room nights annually. According to the Owensboro/Daviess County CVB, this equates to over $400,000 in direct economic impact to the Owensboro/Daviess County community and surrounding areas based on spending estimates of convention delegates. Bill Parrish, Owensboro City Manager added, “There is great anticipation in the air, and it is so exciting to see our convention center start to fill bookings a full 17 months before its scheduled opening. It is also heartwarming to see old friends come back home to Owensboro; the firefighters of the Green River Firefighters Association have been long missed and are happily welcomed back home.” 

Greeted at the door by a costumed gingerbread man, more than 60 guests entered the sweet world of the Candyland-themed party. Guests walked down the grand concourse that featured HD-projected images of the board game’s beloved characters before being greeted by a candy castle entrance that welcomed all into the grand ballroom. Guests picked up their “game board” at the entrance and visited different stops, themed like the game, throughout the room that represented a variety of the Iowa Events Center’s holiday offerings - parties, food, group packages, and basketball game outings.

Iowa Events Center Nets Profit For Polk County The Iowa Events Center was a place of new beginnings, event creation and nurturing, and financial success in the 2011-12 fiscal year. In addition to the in-house departments, vendors who donated décor, music, and other services were also included as one of the featured stops. Prizes encouraged all guests to participate in learning more about all holiday party offerings, such as a ticket package complete with an Ovations gift card, a $500 credit toward a holiday party. The event was extremely successful, generating leads that extended past holiday business, including end-of-tax season receptions, group ticket outings, and board meetings. The collaboration of convention sales, premium seating, group sales, and the Iowa Energy Basketball team allowed for the introduction of new clients and hard-to-contact companies across all departments. During the event, the Wounded Warrior Foundation obtained donations and auctioned off some New England Patriots gear signed by Danny Aiken, a local product and long snapper for the Patriots. 

Throughout the year, the complex hosted 431 events, including the 2012 Iowa Caucus Media Filing Center, NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional Finals, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band, Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, and High School State Tournaments. Over a million guests visited the Des Moines venues to enjoy national conventions, concerts, sporting events, and family shows. It was the sixth-consecutive year in which Global Spectrum was able to surpass budget projections and provide a profit to Polk County. The highly dedicated, team-orientated staff of the Iowa Events Center also re-opened the newly renovated Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center at Veterans Memorial in January after a $42.75 million renovation that transformed the space from an auditorium to a state-of-the-art convention center. The renovated space added an additional 23 meeting rooms, four boardrooms, and the state’s largest ballroom to the complex that can accommodate a wide variety of events, from meetings and galas to gymnastics competitions, and indoor car shows. 


FACILITY NEWS St. Charles Center Adds Trucks To Kids Block Party The St. Charles Convention Center, St. Charles, MO, hosted its sixth annual Kids Block Party and Touch-A-Truck event (August 18). The free community-wide event, which was open to the public, was geared toward healthy and active lifestyles for children ages 3-11. The indoor and outdoor event featured a variety of activities for children to interact, with a host of interesting motor vehicles, including a fire truck, a crane, an armored tactical vehicle, a gymnastics bus, an Army cargo truck, and a variety of large vehicles from the St. Charles City Public Works Department and the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department, plus a live helicopter landing. “The Touch-A-Truck component was a great addition to last year’s event,” said Joe Capitanelli, Marketing Manager at the Convention Center. “We put an emphasis on really enhancing this component of the event this year because it was such a hit last year.” The Kids Block Party continued to feature inflatable activities and variety of interactive vendors for parents and children. Over 3,000 local parents and children, making it the largest attendance in the event’s six-year history, attended the event. 

Global Spectrum Venues Break Sales Records For Harlem Globetrotters

The City of Virginia Beach has renewed Global Spectrum’s management contract for the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts with a multi-year extension.

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters have recognized four Global Spectrum-managed venues in North America for breaking turnstile records during the team’s 2012 North American Tour. Each venue received a custom-made Spalding “Money Ball.”

For the first time ever, the World Choir Games, known as the Olympics of choral music, was held in the United States (July 4-14) at the Global Spectrum-managed Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, OH.

“Global Spectrum is excited to renew and continue our excellent partnership with the city of Virginia Beach and the Sandler Center Foundation,” said Doug Higgons, Global Spectrum Regional Vice President. “We are extremely proud of the success and impact our company has had on Virginia Beach’s Town Center. We look forward to enhancing our relationship with the Foundation and the City for many years to come.”

Thousands of choir members from around the world came to Cincinnati for the prestigious event. The convention center was the hub for two weeks of the WSG’s summer activities, which included providing meals for choir participants, judges, and other officials; establishing an entertainment space for choir members to use between sessions; operating a superstore for WSG paraphernalia; hosting receptions, friendship concerts, and performances; serving as media headquarters; and much, much more.

Global Spectrum has operated the Sandler Center since it was constructed in 2007. Under Global Spectrum’s leadership and direction, the building has hosted more than 2,400 events and welcomed more than 419,000 patrons into the building. 

“The World Choir Games gave Cincinnati and participating venues the opportunity for international exposure to hundreds of thousands of guests, most experiencing their first visit to our country,” said Ric Booth, General Manager of Duke Energy Convention Center.” 

New Mexico BBQ Championships At Santa Ana Star Center More than 13,000 people flocked to the 9th Annual Pork and Brew BBQ State Championship (July 6-8) at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, NM. Competitors from throughout the country came to show off their BBQ cooking talents in 13 categories and compete in the Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned event. Television and BBQ Legend Johnny Trigg from TLC’s show ‘BBQ Pit Masters’ joined the festivities to lend encouragement to the contestants.

Competition was not the only thing on the menu for the three-day event held in the Star Center’s upper parking lot. Families could take part in wood carving expos, arts and crafts, magic shows, and enjoy lots of fingerlickin’ good BBQ. As a bonus for those attending, WWE Raw/ Smackdown Super Show took place after the final session of competition. Fans were treated to a special meet and greet with WWE Superstars Natalia and Zack Ryder. 

The Global Spectrummanaged venues honored by the Globetrotters were the James Brown Arena, Augusta, GA; Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ; Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell, Lowell, MA; and General Motors Centre, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Global Spectrum’s James Brown Arena in Augusta, GA, broke a box office record for the fourth consecutive year, the only venue this year to reach that lofty goal. Last year, the James Brown Arena received one of the first Platinum “Money Balls,” awarded by the Globetrotters to venues that broke a record for a third consecutive year. The venue received a Red, White and Blue Spalding game ball – autographed by the team – that was used in the Augusta performance on March 16, 2012. A Gold “Money Ball” was awarded to Sun National Bank Center and General Motors Centre for breaking sales records in back-to-back years. Tsongas Center was awarded a Red, White and Blue “Money Ball” for breaking a record for the first time. “Our success in 2012 is due in part to our tremendous venue partners, whose tireless efforts help bring the Globetrotter magic to families from coast to coast,” said Michael Kenney, Globetrotters’ Senior Vice President, Live Event Marketing. “We are always grateful for their support.” 

Block Party, Concert Popular First Event At Salina Bicentennial Center Global Spectrum made a smash first impression in Salina, KS, when it hosted the first block party in Heritage Hall at the Salina Bicentennial Center as a pre-concert event for singer Alan Jackson’s performance. Jackson’s concert was the first produced by Global Spectrum since assuming management of the 7,500-seat venue. Nearly 1,000 people came to the block party to enjoy live music, free games, and giveaways throughout the three-hour celebration. “We only had one time to make a first impression and, judging by the fun that everyone had at the block party, I’d say we scored a home run,” said Chris Byrd, Global Spectrum’s General Manager at the Salina Bicentennial Center.

In a strategic move to infuse new marketing ideas into the Iowa Events Center, Des Moines, IA, and its events, Global Spectrum and Ovations Food Services have begun a formal partnership with Iowa State University’s Greenlee School of Journalism to provide marketing challenges at the Iowa Events Center as curriculum for their capstone marketing class.

Throughout the fall semester, students will be divided into three teams to work with Global Spectrum and Ovations staff on three distinct challenges: help provide new marketing initiatives to encourage event attendees to utilize The Principal River’s Edge Restaurant in the Wells Fargo Arena for dinner, sell more season tickets and increase attendance at Iowa Barnstormers Arena Football games, and assist Global Spectrum in creating a new self-promoted Wedding Show for spring 2013. In December, students will make formal presentations, and staff will implement the ideas that show potential. These presentations will differ based on the challenge, but all will include researching, creating a marketing plan, and staying within a suggested budget provided by Global Spectrum. 

The new Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, UT, solicited potential vendor participation with a phone blitz to help promote booth sales for the first bi-annual Downtown Provo Home Show, a Global Spectrum-produced event, and the first for the beautiful new Convention Center. Hoping to create a signature event and capture the opportunity to bring a bi-annual home show to the center, Adam Roe, UVCC Show Manager, had been focused on selling booths for months, but as the show date (September 27-29) quickly approached, the Convention Center decided to hold a facility-wide phone blitz to assist in reaching out for additional local potential vendors.

In the week following the blitz, five booth spaces were secured as a direct result of the team participation. After all the calls had been made, three trophies were awarded to show the building’s enthusiasm and gratitude for the support of the entire staff:

Admission to the block party was free and a ticket to Alan Jackson’s performance was not required to enter. Global Spectrum staff provided a putt-putt course, Velcro wall, dunk tank, and Zorb ball course for the community to enjoy at no cost.

Hello, Home Show Calling, For Provo Show Vendors

Participants in the phone blitz included all office and operations staff and even the General Manager, Danny Wheeler. In just six hours, more than 500 phone calls were made that generated 141 leads, nearly a month’s worth of work completed in one day.

“Between the Block Party and the concert, Global Spectrum made a lot of new friends in Salina,” he said.

Food and beverage was for sale and local Country Radio station Y93.7 was on site with giveaways every half hour. Live music was provided by Nashville recording artist and Salina native Courtney Irwin, along with the Lawrence, KS, group Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers. 

FACILITY NEWS Budweiser Center Assists Record-Setting Attendance At Larimer Rodeo & Fair The Global Spectrum staff at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO, and personnel from Front Row Marketing Services were instrumental in helping the five-day 2012 Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo set a new attendance record of 101,124. Comcast-Spectacor entities played a significant role in both marketing and corporate sales of the event. Front Row’s staff was able to increase sponsorship revenue by more than $40,000 in one year, and the marketing team from the Budweiser

Events Center took the lead on public relations, branding, and overall marketing for the event. Several aspects of the event contributed to the overall record attendance as they set records in their own right. Roanoke’s Nate Wooden Wins Hot Dog Eating Test Nate Wooden, Group Sales Manager at the Global Spectrum-managed Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA, challenged his own ability to wolf down as many hot dogs as possible in eight minutes as a first-time competitor in the inaugural Roanoke Hot Dog Eating Contest (June 29).

One of seven competitors, Wooden, who wore Roanoke Civic Center gear, was encouraged by a cheering section of his Civic Center co-workers (who easily made up the largest cheering section). The Colonial Life Arena, Columbia, SC, hosted its 6th Annual “How You Doin’?” Employee Appreciation Party (August 28) as a thank you for all the hard work and dedication put forth by the part-time staff over the course of the year. Approximately 120 part-time staff, their families, and full-time staff attended the event. The event was themed Jazz Gala, and the arena bowl was decorated to fit the occasion. FRMS Assists City Of Bangor With Naming Rights For New Arena, Convention Center Front Row Marketing Services completed the naming rights agreement on behalf of the City of Bangor for the city’s new 8,000-seat multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue currently under construction. It will be named the Cross Insurance Center as a result of a new, long-term naming rights agreement between the city and Cross Insurance. The new Cross Insurance Center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.

IN THE COMMUNITY Sears Centre Arena Feeds 80 Children The Global Spectrum staff at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL, took a stand against childhood hunger by volunteering at a local packing site for “Feed My Starving Children,” a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing nutritious meals to children across the world suffering from malnutrition and threatened with death from starvation.

The Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL, was the host site for the first annual Northwest Fourth Fest, a regionalized Fourth of July celebration coordinated through a partnership of surrounding communities, including the City of Elgin, the Village of Hanover Park, Hanover Township, and the Village of Hoffman Estates.

Because so many communities are faced with increasing pressure to do more with less, the communities found collaborating on a joint fireworks display as part of the Northwest Fourth Fest as a solution to providing residents an entertaining and family-friendly Fourth of July celebration. 

The Summer Camp, part of the Sandler Center education and outreach program that includes a Spring Break camp, provided learning opportunities and fun for each child involved. 

Sandler Center Volunteers Get Appreciation Night The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Virginia Beach, VA, honored its community volunteers this summer with a very special evening on the Sandler Center’s stage as they were served dinner overlooking the 1,300-seat performance hall.

The Center boasts over 260 active volunteers, who contributed over 12,000 hours of service at more than 150 events during the 2011-12 season. In the two years since the venue began tracking services, the venue’s community volunteers have donated more than 21,000 hours. Sandler Center volunteers—ranging from greeters and ushers to tour directors and ticket takers - embrace Global Spectrum’s “How You Doin’?” approach to customer service and act as an incredible face and quality representative of the Sandler Center. 

Richmond Staffers Ride To Aid Wounded Warriors Global Spectrum personnel from the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Richmond, VA, participated in the “Sea to Shining Sea” crosscountry bike ride in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. The bike ride trek stopped for a break at the Virginia Governor’s Mansion on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol for a reception. The ride originated in San Francisco, CA, on May 31 and ended in Virginia Beach, VA, on July 28. 

General Manager Karen Totaro has joined Global Spectrum as Assistant General Manager at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, OH. Totaro formerly was the Assistant Executive Director at the Oregon Convention Karen Totaro Center in Portland for the past nine years. Prior to her stay in Portland, she was Associate Director at the University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, OH, for five years.

“Karen is an incredibly talented convention center manager,” said Ric Booth, Global Spectrum’s General Manager at the Duke Energy Convention Center. “She has a great ability to lead and implement new ideas for innovative solutions for both the staff and customers. We are confident that Karen’s experience in our industry will assist our team to reach the next level in guest services and enhance the client experience at the Duke Energy Convention Center.” Totaro has served two terms on the International Association of Venue Managers Board of Directors, while chairing several industry committees. In 2009, Karen achieved the highest education honor within the industry when she received her Certified Facility Executive (CFE) certification, making Totaro a leader in the venue industry. In 2011, Totaro was nominated as a Venue’s Today “Woman of Influence.” This year, she was notified by Randy Brown, Chairman of the Board of the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM), that she had been selected to receive the “Chairman’s Leadership Citation,” which was presented to her in July at the IAVM conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL. 

Rebecca Bolton Moves To Duke Energy Center Rebecca Bolton has been named Sales Manager at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, OH. Bolton formerly was Director of Sales and Marketing at the North West Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton, GA, also a Global Spectrum-managed venue. She began working at the Dalton venue in 2009. Alissa Cunningham To Marketing Director At Chaifetz Arena Alissa Cunningham has been named Marketing Director at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. She was most recently the Marketing Manager at Livestrong Sporting Park in Alissa Cunningham Kansas City, KA. Cunningham joined Global Spectrum in 2008 as an intern at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA, while she was attending Drake University in Des Moines. Following graduation, she became Marketing Manager at Iowa Events Center. She was promoted to Marketing Manager at Livestrong Sporting Park where she assisted with the opening of the state-of-the-art, technologically advanced stadium for Sporting KC of the Major League Soccer. Her primary role at Livestrong was to attract and promote non-soccer events, while also managing the venue’s website and social media efforts. Cunningham will be working closely with Bob Kehm, Chaifetz Arena Assistant General Manager, who had been guiding the venue’s marketing department’s activities since the building opened. 

Jacque Holowaty Promoted To Assistant GM At Abbotsford Entertainment Centre Jacque Holowaty has been named Assistant General Manager of the 8,500-seat Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre in Abbotsford, BC. Prior to her promotion, Holowaty was the venue’s Box Office Manager and Guest Services Manager. “Jacque is a great example of personal growth and success in our company,” said Global Spectrum’s Jason Blumenfeld, General Manager of the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. “After starting out as a part-time Box Office ticket seller, Jacque successfully took advantage of every opportunity and Jacque Holowaty challenge that our company provided to her.” Holowaty, an eight-year Global Spectrum employee, first began her career at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO, as a part-time box office ticket seller. SpiritBank Center Names Three To New Positions Global Spectrum has named three employees to new positions at SpiritBank Center in Tulsa, OK, one of the company’s newest management venues. Kellen Seitz was named Director of Marketing, Robert Coughlin is the new Director of Operations, and Sandra Jennings comes aboard as Director of Finance. Seitz formerly was an intern and Marketing Coordinator at the Global Spectrum-managed Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO. He joined Global Spectrum in 2010. He graduated from Fort Lewis College with a degree in Sports Administration and a minor in Marketing. Coughlin began working for the SpiritBank Events Center in 2008 and transitioned to Global Spectrum employment as Director of Operations when Global Spectrum assumed management of the 4,500-seat venue in June.

Rich Feeley Named Director, Event Services At Miami Beach Convention Center Rich Feeley, a 20-year veteran of convention center operations management, has joined the Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach, FL, as Director of Event Services. In this role, Feeley will manage a team of event managers and support staff that is responsible for working with all incoming events acting as a liaison between the show organizers, the venue, and all parties involved in the production and execution of an event. He has served as Director of Operations for major tradeshows such as COMDEX, Networld + Interop and Java One, and has played vital roles on several high-profile projects, including the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 1994 and 2004 Super Bowls, the World War II Memorial Dedication in Washington D.C., and former President Clinton’s Keynote address at COMDEX 2000. 

Global Spectrum’s Joe Capitanelli, Marketing Manager at the St. Charles Convention Center, St. Charles, MO, and a Global Spectrum Regional Marketing Director, received a 2012 Young Professionals Pacesetter Award from the Convention Industry Council (CIC). The award honors accomplished industry supporters and emerging leaders in the meetings and events community.

Capitanelli was nominated by the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) for his leadership and influence to foster more involvement from local nonprofits, city government, staff, and volunteers in “Helping Hands for the Holidays.”

The event seeks to provide food and services for those in need within St. Charles County and has grown from serving 150 people in its first year, to one of the largest charity events of its kind, serving over 1,200 meals, offering flu shots, winter coats, canned food, various health screenings, transportation, and family activities to those in need. The award was presented to Capitanelli by CIC on October 12 in Las Vegas during IMEX America. In this inaugural year, individuals were selected only within these categories and in outward years those honored will be expanded to include Community Service/ Humanitarian Pacesetter Award, Innovations and Best Practices Pacesetter Award, Public Elected Official Pacesetter Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Pacesetter Award. 
