14 – 24 September ÖÖ: Was it a Dream? Nordic avant-garde in London Design Festival, 94 Berwick Street, Soho, London ÖÖ, or ‘night’ in Estonian, is a temporary gallery + concept store showcasing work by young avant-garde creatives from six Nordic countries - Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Kesküla Norway and Sweden. Initiated and curated by Merilyn Kesküla, it is the first part of the collaborative project by a community of fashion and product designers, photographers, film makers, artists and illustrators, whose work introduces dark and surreal aspects of Nordic aesthetics. 24 – 25 September Soundtrack of an Age – Arvo Pärt Conference in Southbank Centre, London Arvo Pärt’s transcendent music is one of the defining soundworlds of the last 30 years. Through media, concerts and recordings his work has crossed boundaries of religion, race and culture and established itself as one of the most popular and recognisable features of the contemporary musical landscape. This two day conference, celebrating Arvo Pärt’s 75th birthday, with the composer in attendance throughout, is presented by the South Bank Centre in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music. 18 October, 6.30pm In the Hands of Fate: Existentialism in Film, a discussion at BFI London Film Festival, NFT3 LFF filmmakers discuss the existential themes in their work. Several films in this year’s LFF programme specifically emphasise philosophical struggles with circumstance. 7 November, 7.30pm 75th-birthday celebrations for Arvo Pärt: Hortus Musicus at LIFEM Festival, St Etheldreda’s Church, London Music on the crossroad of times and cultures. The group’s repertoire includes works of 20th century composers including Arvo Pärt’s compositions, of which ‘Arbos’ and ‘An den Wassern zu Babel sassen wir und weinten’ the composer has Mustonen group’s conductor. Hortus Musicus dedicated to Andres Mustonen, has performed at many major early music festivals in the world. 13 November, 4pm The Extraordinary World of Estonian Animation in Four Movements: a special programme of Estonian animations at the 24th Leeds International Film Festival, Howard Assembly Room, Leeds Winner of this year’s prestigious European Cartoon d’Or award, CROCODILE by Kaspar Jancis, is the story of a frustrated former opera singer who Jancis now entertains children in a styrofoam costume. The sea comes between a diver and a night dentist in DIVERS IN THE RAIN by Priit and Olga Pärn,a Pärn beautiful animation with a wonderful score. 18 November, 8.30pm Kristjan Randalu (piano) joins Mike Moreno quartet at the London Jazz Festival, Pizza Express Jazz Club A pre-eminent new voice in modern jazz, guitarist Mike Moreno has carved a distinctive musical persona, and has been picked by Pat Metheny as one of the major new voices of Janisch Paul Wiltgen and guitar. 9 – 27 November Estonian folk group RO:TORO is back in the UK and will tour England and Scotland The tour will take traditional Estonian tunes with lady pipers, an improvising saxophonist, accopanied by a rocking guitarist and a mad percussionist playing water drums to several different venues in Scotland and North England.
