Global Tourism


Tourism Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Travel Organization defines tourists as people who “travel to stay in places outside their usual environment for more than twenty-four hours and not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other proposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited”. •  2008: 922 million international tourist arrivals generating $944 billion in receipts.

•  Tourism ranks as the second largest industry in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the State is the 5th most visited in the country. •  The tourism industry generates $10.4 billion in wages and benefits and accounts for more than 6% of all individuals in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This is a work force of more than 400,000 representing hotels, amusement parks, restaurants, ski area, and stadiums. •  The tourism industry has grown state and local tax revenue more than 13% between 2003 and 2006.
