Healthy Pet Journal PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
WINTER 2016
Happy New Year! Global Pet Foods is excited to kick off 2016 with our Show Us Your Heart Campaign. From February 12 – 28, we’re asking for your help to raise funds for hundreds of animal shelters and pet rescue groups across Canada. These funds will go towards caring for dogs, cats and many other animals who were either abandoned by people unable to care for them or rescued from abusive homes. The need is even greater now since animal shelters and pet rescue groups are overflowing with animals. Every $1 donation you make will help to care for these homeless animals and together we can make a big difference in their lives. We are very excited that Michael “Pinball” Clemons, one of the best known Toronto Argonaut player, has partnered with us for our Show Us Your Heart Campaign. Michael redefines the meaning of community involvement and has been recognized by many organizations for his tireless work with charities, schools and other community groups. We are truly honoured to have him on board with us for this campaign. This year, we’re excited to celebrate Global Pet Foods’ 40th year anniversary! We’ve come a long way since our first store in Scarborough. There are now over 170 stores across Canada and it is our privilege to serve each and every one of our customers.
Pet health continues to be our key focus in 2016. As “Canada’s Healthy Choice for Pets”, Global Pet Foods’ mission is to help our customers improve and/or maintain the health of their pets. As the leading pet specialty retailer in Canada, we offer our customers superior brands of natural and holistic pet food and supplements, along with a wide array of pet supplies and accessories. Our Healthy Pet Care Specialists also have the knowledge to provide our clientele with exceptional pet care education and tips to assist them in caring for their pets. Cancer and obesity rates in pets continue to skyrocket across the country. Overweight or obese cats and dogs are at an increased risk of having breathing problems, heart disease, arthritis and cancer. In the same way that it’s important to care for our own health, proper nutrition and exercise can also help to extend your pet’s life. A new year provides us with a clean slate and an opportunity to implement positive changes where needed. May we recommit to be our best and lead an active, healthy lifestyle with our companion pets. Warm regards,
Jim

Baby,it’s cold outside! Pet care tips for the Winter season
A
nother new year provides us with a clean slate and a sense of renewal. We resolve to work harder, take steps to improve and/or maintain our health, have lots of fun, and spend more time with our family and friends. For most Canadians, January also equates to cold weather and snow. While we resolve to make improvements in our lives, it’s important that we also strive to improve the health and welfare of our pets, especially during the cold weather. Below are some tips to help you do just that!
Take care of their paws and skin
www.shutterstock.com
Massaging paw protectants into your dog’s paw pads before going outside can help protect them from salt and other chemical agents. Boots provide even more coverage and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between their bare toes which can cause irritation. Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws. And after every walk, wash and dry your pet’s paws and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals. Repeatedly coming out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can result in your dog’s skin becoming itchy and flaky. Use a humidifier in the cold months to avoid your home from becoming too dry. Use pet-friendly ice melts on your own driveway sidewalks whenever possible. A new food added benefits for healthier skin and coat may also be required.
Adjust food and water intake during the cold weather
www.shutterstock.com
Pets who spend a lot of time outside in the winter will burn extra energy while trying to stay warm. Feeding them a little bit more during the cold weather months provides them muchneeded calories. Indoor pets, or those who only go outside for short walks during the cold months, need fewer calories to avoid weight gain. In light of the less physical activity, it is imperative that you adjust their feeding amounts and feed less food to avoid weight gain. All pets will require plenty of water to drink will help keep them well-hydrated and minimize dry skin problems. Water is the most important nutrient for life and fresh water is a must for your pet at all times. An animal can lose all of its fat and half of its protein and survive, but a loss of 10% of body water can cause serious illness. Fresh water should be made available to your pets all day, especially during the winter.
Pay attention to your pet’s special medical needs
www.shutterstock.com
Cold weather will often aggravate existing medical conditions in dogs, particularly arthritis. It is critical that you maintain the exercise regimen for your arthritic dog, however, don’t overdo it and pay attention to their body language. Dogs can easily sustain additional injuries, especially in deep snow and on ice or slippery surfaces, so be mindful of this when you’re outside with them. When you head back indoors, ensure that your dog has a warm, soft resting area to recuperate. Try gently massaging your pet’s painful joints to help restore blood flow, and invest in a good orthopedic bed. We recommend a maximum time of one hour of outdoor activity during the cold months, especially for senior dogs and those with health issues. Try adding a natural Hip & Joint supplement to their food or water, which will help to lubricate the joints and ease the discomfort of arthritis. Supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin can help relieve joint and muscle pain, promote new cartilage growth, and improve joint mobility. MSM (Methyl sulfonyl-methane) is an antioxidant, cell rejuvenator and joint healer. Fish oils supplements can help treat a wide range of issues from kidney disease and arthritis or high cholesterol. Just like people, dogs are more susceptible to other illnesses during the winter weather. If your dog has more health issues than just arthritis, you may want to keep the outdoor activity to a bare minimum (ie. head outside to pee) and exercise with them indoors.
Speak with one of the Healthy Pet Care Specialists at your neighbourhood Global Pet Foods store if you have any questions or concerns about caring for your pets during the winter season. They can recommend a new food, supplements, or some great accessories, along with information and tips to help you maintain your pet’s health during the winter season. Volume 7 ISSUE No 1

Whether you are aspiring to take your dog into the obedience ring or hoping to raise a well-mannered puppy, the question still remains: What is the optimum amount of training required for your pup?
Spirit
K9
One may think that the answer is simple. The right amount of training is the amount needed to get the desired behaviour from your dog, but that turns into another issue in itself. The question then becomes “What is the desired behaviour, and does the ends justify the means”? Is the desired behaviour the end product or can we be happy with the progress as it unfolds?
Coach Sweat the small stuff
Let’s use the word “Stay” as an example. For me, when training a “beginner” puppy, my criteria for the word “Stay” would be to have him stay in the area that he is left in. This means that if my pup is left to stay in a sit on a mat, and without moving from that mat he chooses to lie down, my goal is accomplished. For others, the word “sit” might mean that he couldn’t move his body at all, including lying down. As he becomes more accomplished at the task of staying put, the criteria for reward should be slowly raised. Instead of being rewarded for being in his place, he would then gain a reward for not lying dying down. Now he has to work a bit harder but not all at once. The details would be slowly added as the puppy becomes more educated. This may sound controversial or even backward to many dog owners. Surely, if you teach the pup to do it properly in the first place it would negate having to re-teach some of the lessons. While that might be true, there is a much bigger picture to keep in mind. The bigger picture I have witnessed is the over-training of young puppies, and the stress it may cause later on. For example, if a person were learning Archery, wouldn’t a cheer be valid the first time they hit the board with the arrow? The art of learning how to hold the bow, how to maneuver your own body, and how to aim at and reach a target, takes time. At first there would be many arrows that find themselves on the floor. Picture the instructor waiting until the arrow hit the bullseye before ever praising the student. Motivation would wane and the student might even give up trying. All the steps towards hitting that bullseye need to be celebrated, and by doing so, the student would be encouraged to be more successful, and enjoy the process of learning. It is the same with the dogs. By teaching a young pup to come to you, and as it comes in front to sit, the owner holds the collar by both sides and instructs the pup to sit straighter, you have decreased the motivation of that dog. Will the dog learn to come and sit in front nice and straight? Probably so, but many will come with ears and tail down, unmotivated and without any joy in learning. To put the pressure on this young dog to complete

the exercise successfully before he has a full understanding of what you are teaching can easily take the spring out of his step. Working with your dog should be fun for both the dog and the handler. If your puppy makes a mistake, forgiveness should come quickly from you. If the shoe were on the other paw, your dog would forgive you in a heartbeat. To me, seeing a dog work with joy in his body is the best gift of all. Our spirits should soar when we see our dogs doing sports, or playing fetch at home, and see a light in their eyes. It is important to take the time to let your pup enjoy his childhood. Teach him his lessons, but do so in a fun, upbeat manner. Teach him the overall concepts and add the details later. Your pup will get trained. It might take slightly longer, but the look on his face when he is learning will be well worth the wait.

ou clearly recognize the importance and benefits of having a mouth full of healthy teeth and gums. Did you know a lack of regular and attentive care to your pet’s teeth can result in serious health implications? Prevention is the key. Studies show that approximately 80% of dogs who receive little or no dental care will show signs of oral disease by age 3. Pets with poor oral health also have a higher risk of heart, kidney and liver problems, which can lead to their early death.
People often underestimate the steps that need to be taken with their pet’s teeth in order to maintain good health. To ensure that oral health problems do not interfere with your pet’s quality of life, pets should have their teeth brushed on a regular basis. Don’t assume that you will know when your pet’s teeth are hurting him or her. Pets will continue to eat even if they have tooth pain simply due to hunger. If you are stressed about the process or are concerned about whether you are brushing your pet’s teeth properly, ask one of our Healthy Pet Care specialists at your neighborhood Global Pet Foods store to demonstrate the proper technique for daily brushing.

Please also note the following: 1.
Dental care is critical for your pet’s health. If you are not able to brush your dog’s teeth, there are other options when you’re in between vet visits. Consider using oral rinses made especially for dogs. You’ll find a wide variety of oral care products for cats and dogs at Global Pet Foods stores.
2. Never use human toothpaste because the foaming agents can pose health risks to pets. 3. Do not give your pet any type of candy, ever! Like chocolate, sorbitol-sweetened candy is toxic to dogs. Regular candy is bad for your pet’s teeth (and yours!). 4. Some toys, like nylon tennis balls, can erode the crowns of your dog’s teeth, so look for toys that provide some protection, like durable rubber dog toys. 5. While many brands of dry pet food incorporate dental benefits, give your pet special dental treats formulated to reduce tartar,
plaque build-up and stains is another option to help prevent oral health problems. Many people give their dogs a bone or rawhide as a way to help keep their teeth clean. While these can help keep your pets’ teeth cleaner, they may also cause tooth fractures, or result in your pet ingesting bone shards. Ask our Healthy Pet Care Specialists for assistance in selecting the right product and size of bone or chew for your pet. Also, keep an eye on your pets when they are chewing these products to ensure that they don’t choke on any pieces that may have broken off. 6. Contact your veterinarian if you note changes in your pet’s behaviour or health. The following usually indicates an issue that must be addressed by a professional: your pet stops eating, they have bad breath, they are drooling excessively, their gums are inflamed, or their teeth are visibily demaged or they’ve lost a tooth (or teeth). Failure to obtain professional care for dental problems can result in serious health problems.
Slurp N’ Fresh contains natural Yucca extract which is beneficial for your pet’s digestive tract. Global Pet Foods carries many dental products From toothbrushes to rinses. Slurp N’ Fresh, a dental care product, is made in Canada. Slurp N’ Fresh uses a unique blend of natural plant extracts to eliminated odour causing compounds in the mouth which cause bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. This all-natural product will eliminate bad breath, reduce plaque & tartar, and protect your pet’s natural oral environment. Clear, unscented, with NO alcohol, artificial flavors, coloring, dyes, or harmful chemicals. Economical to use each time you change your pet’s water. Slurp N’ Fresh also eliminates skunk spray from the mouth.

Why do dogs get so itchy

our animals’ skin is always sloughing off and renewing itself, just like our own. Have you noticed however, that as soon as we turn on the furnace in the fall our skin gets more dry, and both you and your pets start to scratch and itch more frequently? You can apply creams and lotions but relief does not last as these external measures don’t cure dry flaky skin.

Corneocytes: Flattened, dead skin cells mainly composed of keratin plus other compounds called natural moisturizing factors (NMFs). Keratin is a humectant (which means it holds water) that gives skin its strength. NMFs are also humectants that not only hold water but also attract it. So because they are also water-soluble, the skin dries out if you shower or swim too long or wash your hands too much. Desmosomes: The proteins that hold the corneocytes together. Intercellular lipids: Fats comprised of ceramides, free fatty acids and cholesterol. In the stratum corneum, their role is to prevent the loss of NMFs from within the corneocytes. These lipids have another super important function: they combine with sweat to form the crucial thin layer of ‘acid mantle’—the chemical barrier that kills bacteria and regulates moisture loss. Lipids also lubricate the skin and are a major factor in giving it a smooth texture.

However you’ll be wise to follow some other simple practices for the prevention of the itch in the first place: 99 Give your animal fewer baths, and reduce water temperatures during winter. This is an essential step for those with dry skin, but should be followed for pets with healthy skin, as well. As mentioned previously, water leaches NMFs from the skin and affects its lipid content. 99 Make sure your animal drinks enough water and has a clean full bowl at all times. 99 Avoid the use of harsh soaps and detergents. These ingredients remove the skin’s acid mantle, thus increasing the rate of transepidermal water loss. Use alcohol-free glycerin soaps.
99 Use a cool-mist humidifier in the home to maintain proper humidity levels. This will help skin maintain hydration by slowing the rate of transepidermal water loss.

An interview with
Michael “Pinball” Clemons I n the rich 134-year history of the Toronto Argonauts, there are many football heroes who have brought pride to the city of Toronto and the Double Blue, but it is difficult to find a more popular name in team history than Michael Clemons. Born and raised in Florida, the William and Mary economics graduate began his career in the CFL in 1989 after a brief stint in the National Football League. As a player, Clemons compiled a brilliant CFL career with the Toronto Argonauts, including a profootball record for most career combined yards with 25,396. On September 15, 2000, Pinball hung up his Double Blue jersey after 12 brilliant seasons to move directly into the position of Head Coach. He retired with 12 all-time team records to his credit, including career receptions (682). Known for a personality that is as electric as his style of play on the field was, Clemons redefines the meaning of community involvement and has been recognized by many organizations for his tireless work with charities, schools and other community groups. Mike was awarded the Order of Ontario in 2001. In 2007, he fulfilled a longtime ambition by launching the Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons Foundation to quicken academic excellence, infuse depth of character, promote health and vitality, and inspire generosity in our youth. In February 2006, Clemons was named Chair of the Youth Challenge Fund by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. In 2005, he was an integral part of launching The Argos Foundation – Stop The Violence and was later named to its Board. Whether in uniform, on the sidelines, or in the front office, Pinball has always been and continues to be one of Canada’s favourite personalities. Clemons and his wife Diane, who became Canadian citizens in April, 2015, along with their treasured daughters, Rachel, Raven, and Rylie, are proud to call Oakville home.

Are you still involved with football in terms of coaching?
I am no longer coaching. I loved coaching but I left it when my oldest daughter started high school as it was the last four years that all three of our girls would be home together. I made the conscious decision that this was the most important thing for our family and I’d make the same decision one thousand times out of a thousand.
You and your wife do so much to inspire people – both young and old – to live their best lives. Were you raised in a family that practiced this or was this something that you developed as an adult, and if so, what was the spark? Both Diane and I were raised in very caring, nurturing, benevolent environments, and both of us came from modest backgrounds. In both of our cases, our mothers set the tone for the family. It’s a spirit that we both carry with us today. While our communities were not rich in traditional wealth, there was an abundance of caring and sharing. Diane grew up in Clearwater, Florida and I was raised in Dunedin, Florida before moving to Clearwater when I was in high school. That is where I met Diane. A tremendous foundation was laid through the strength of our families that didn’t just teach us, but consistently and openly demonstrated the value of helping others.
You started the Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation in 2009? What is the purpose of this Foundation? As we grow and mature, we should no longer be choosing between good and bad, but good and best. So our goal at the Foundation is not just to do good things, but to make every effort to do the best things. We believe that means helping young people at home and around the world who are living in the most challenging environments. Our goal is to give them a hand up, not a hand out. That’s why most of what we do is grounded in education. We believe that education is the number one determinate of our life, health, wealth, freedom and family.
MIND
Are your three children involved with your Foundation? Do they help out with some of your charitable initiatives? We have three beautiful daughters - Rachel, Raven, and Rylie. Our children will be accompanying us on a trip to Kenya during the Christmas holidays (2015). We have consistently sprinkled opportunities for our children to engage in the mini-projects that mean so much to us. However, we try not to smother them with our passion so that we can leave room for them to process, learn and ultimately make their own choices.
Are you an animal lover? My first pet was a toy poodle and his name was Toscar. We got him when he was two weeks old. Toscar was a little black Toy Poodle, with curly hair. He was the cutest dog in the world! With my abbreviated stature and Toscar being a Toy Poodle, we were a perfect fit. My mother and my great-great-great-grandmother (who outlived my great-grandmother and great-greatgrandmother!) and I lived together. Although Toscar was blind, he would often find a way to escape from the house during the day when I was at school. One day he got out and he didn’t come back; we think that someone took him. I was scarred for life. I love animals but I never got a pet again until we had children. Riley, our youngest daughter, is one who loves everything that moves. She just adores every living creature (including people!). Riley really has a big heart and has a lot of love for all kinds of pets. Due to Riley’s love of pets, we adopted a Morkie, but discovered that my oldest daughter, Rachel, is allergic to pets. Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep Roxy on a full time basis as it’s very hard on Rachel when we have a dog full time in the house due to her allergies. Now we have Roxy one weekend about every other month and spoil her rotten. We’ve had hamsters and goldfish (lots of fish!), but it’s just not the same as having a dog. Dogs are really our pet of choice. Next year, Rachel may move out to attend post-secondary school, and then we will be able to have Roxy live with us full-time.

Who inspires you and why? Life, and more specifically, people inspire me. I love it when someone takes the extra minute to hold a door open for somebody else, or delivers great customer service. I believe that my efforts are overrated and I get too much credit for my philanthropic deeds. The reality is that our family has more than it needs and we give out of excess. The true heroes in our community are those who give out of scarcity on a daily basis and get no credit for it. Maybe the purpose of my platform is to ensure that the real every day heroes get their credit.
What was the motivation for you to be the spokesperson for our Show Us Your Heart Campaign? The team makes the dream! I had the privilege of meeting the Global Pet Foods team a year ago and I appreciated them for the manner in which they operate their business and their approach for putting the health of their customers’ pets first. Combine that with my daughter’s passion for pets, this was the motivating factor for me to get onboard with them. I’ve also become acquainted with Don Cherry, who was previously a spokesperson for the Global Pet Foods’ Show Us Your Heart Campaign, and now that I am involved with Don’s Pet Rescue Foundation, I will be working more closely with Don too!
Life, and more specifically, people, inspire me.

Global Pet Foods We are proud to celebrate our 40th year anniversary in
2016
Since 1976 Global Pet Foods has grown into an industry leader in the specialty pet food and supplies category with more than 170 stores across Canada. As an avid pet lover, Jim Walker began a pet food delivery service in 1992, and decided to look into buying a franchise just one year later. He decided that Global Pet Foods was an ideal fit for him. He opened his first store in Toronto (Forest Hill) in 1993 before opening a second franchise location in the Toronto neighborhood of Rosedale one year later. In 1995, Jim Walker, purchased Global Pet Foods, and then acquired Ryan Pet Foods in 1997. Dino Fragaglia joined Global Pet Foods as a partner in 2003 and Paul Thomson became a partner in 2005. Jim, Dino and Paul continue to be actively involved in the business today. The Global Pet Foods’ mission in 1976 is the same mission to this day: caring for pets must include these four elements: Mind+Body+Soul+Spirit. By offering a unique and wide selection of wholesome pet food, supplements, accessories and supplies that encompass these four elements, we are committed to helping pet parents make informed decisions for the total health and well-being of their companion pets. ets are a constant source of inspiration. They motivate us to brave the cold on dark winter mornings and stay active. They fuel our spirits with their unconditional love and trust. Jim Walker, President of Global Pet Foods, was lucky enough to have Bear and Abby, two rescue dogs, that inspired him to switch careers and later, start a national fundraiser to help homeless animals.
Jim and his wife found Bear, a long-haired German Shepherd, through an online rescue network called Adopt-A-Dog/Save-A-Life. At the time Jim was traveling a lot and his wife wanted a big dog that would make her feel more comfortable when she was home alone. A puppy didn’t fit that bill, so they decided to adopt a rescued pet instead.
When they met Bear, they instantly fell in love with him. He was this big, huge, hairy dog that weighed 120 pounds, but had a sweet, gentle disposition. He was also extremely well behaved, which left them wondering why anyone would ever have abandoned him. Bear was the perfect companion. Bear lived a long and happy life with Jim and his family.
Below are photos of some of last year’s winners:

The shelter explained that Bear had inflammatory bowel disease and his pet parents found it too difficult to care for him. That didn’t scare Jim off. They took Bear home and learned everything they could about pet nutrition and eventually found the right diet to manage his condition. They were amazed that through proper nutrition, Bear’s overall health improved significantly, and drastically improved his quality of life.
He wanted to support smaller, community-based organizations -the local shelters and groups that don’t receive government funding or have their own fundraising departments.
His transformation inspired Jim to switch careers and open a Global Pet Foods store in 1992 as a franchisee. Jim moved on to become the President of Global Pet Foods in 1995 and has remained President to this day.
In 2006 the Global Pet Foods annual fundraiser, Show Us Your Heart, was born. Every February, each Global Pet Foods store selects a local shelter in its community to support. We then ask pet parents to donate a dollar and we match the first dollar of their donation. All proceeds go back to the local shelters.
But it was his second dog, Abby, who inspired Jim to help shelters give incredible animals, like Bear and Abby, a second chance. Abby was found in a dumpster on an especially cold fall day along with a litter of puppies. One of only two puppies to survive, Abby, barely a day old, was picked up by the Humane Society. A friend at the Humane Society knew that Jim was looking for a dog after Bear passed away and called him immediately. When Jim and his wife brought Abby home, he started thinking about how Global Pet Foods could give back to shelters as a company.
These shelters do all the work, often on their own dime and through the blood, sweat and tears of volunteers. So they decided that Global Pet Foods should become their fundraising department.
With the help of our generous customers, Global Pet Foods has now raised over $1,000,000 for animal shelters and pet rescue groups across Canada. Those funds have helped shelters pay vet bills, buy supplies and keep their doors open -- all in the quest to find forever homes for dogs like Bear and Abby. Show Us Your Heart isn’t just any ordinary store fundraiser. It’s a chance to directly give back to animal caregivers who give their whole hearts to help homeless pets each day.
From February 12 - 28, 2016 let’s put our money where our hearts are and help homeless pets in need with the end result of finding them their forever homes!
