vacations, to pioneer a program that would change travel forever. They called it “Be My Guest”—and today it has grown to 100 unique experiences across the seven continents that the company visits. Local hosts open up their homes and businesses exclusively for Trafalgar’s guests to toast, dine, explore and learn about the destinations. “When we launched “Be My Guest” 10 years ago, we were the first to tap into travellers’ desire to gain new perspectives on

the world by involving them in the day-today lives of locals,” says Gavin Tollman, Trafalgar CEO. “Yet when we launched the program in 2009, people said it would never work.” He is pleased to report that they were wrong—and today every trip includes such a sensual event. To delight the senses, activities include everything from olive oil and wine-tasting with an Italian count in his villa to exploring the French property of Poppy Salinger, widow of John F. Kennedy’s former personal advisor, and hearing her tales of those glamour days. Here is a sampling of more “Be My Guest” offerings.
SPIRIT OF THE SOUTH The music and movement of the American deep south stole my heart decades ago—and over the years I have left pieces of it in Kentucky and Louisiana. A GLOBAL LEADER FOR 74 YEARS The world’s most-awarded travel company, Trafalgar has been crafting innovative trips and exploring new destinations aligned to traveller trends for 74 years. Long before the world caught on to the term “experiential travel,” Trafalgar understood that travellers wanted to feel the authenticity of a destination through personal connections with its people, stories and cuisine. With that authenticity comes a sense of responsibility to the environment. For example, “Be My Guest” experiences help to sustain local communities and traditions with the support of hosts who help combat the negative effects of tourism and work to carefully preserve the local ways of life. They can do this through JoinTrafalgar in partnership with the TreadRight Foundation.

Trafalgar, fortunately, has a nine-day guided vacation of Norway and a 14-day immersive experience of Scandinavia, so my only challenge is deciding which one to embark on. In any case, I’ll get the “Be My Guest” experience on a postcard-perfect 16th-century farm hosted by the fifth-generation Øvre-Eide family. On the slate is a guided journey of their farm and livestock, including the purebred Norwegian Dølahest and Fjording horses they raise. The Bergen farm was once the seat of a king, and the dungeon is said to have imprisoned the infamous bandit Gjest Baardsen who plundered western Norway in the 18th century. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY AND HOW YOU CHOSE TO CREATE THE TRASIMENO MUSIC FESTIVAL? In 2002, I purchased property overlooking Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, Italy, where I built a house. In 2004, I discovered the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione and its stunning 15th-century courtyard, which is ideal for chamber music concerts. The following year we had our first festival and people came from around the world. Many return every year.
know where my next meal will be. Plus a tin of sardines—my emergency rations! A hot water bottle, travel kettle, universal plug and earplugs are other necessities I simply can’t live without.
HOW FREQUENTLY DO YOU TRAVEL IN A TYPICAL YEAR? I’m on the road at least 10 months a year, if not more. I haven’t counted the number of concerts in a year for a long time: back in 2013 it was something like 133 days of concerts, masterclasses, recording sessions—which didn’t include travel and practices at home.
IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT YOU PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN? I don’t have a personal assistant. I book my own flights. I run my own online shop from a corner in my living room, taking packages to the post office myself. I’m my own cleaning lady—it’s good exercise! In short, I do most of the things people imagine I couldn’t possibly do since I’m a concert pianist. All that while constantly learning and memorizing new repertoire.
DO YOU FOLLOW ROUTINES FOR LONG-DISTANCE TRAVEL? I hate spending time at the computer at home, so when I travel I do much of the business side of my career. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT CANADA? As I travel the world, I appreciate how fortunate Canadians are. Canada has space, clean air (for the most part), is not an aggressive country. gaze out the windows of our inn onto the shimmering Gulf of Mexico. Aside from the odd bird, nothing
stirs. Then I notice something else. A native bird? Not exactly. On Sanibel Beach, shell collecting, best done stooped over, is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. After some time and practice, you may even happen upon a rare junonia shell, which may get your photo in the local paper. Sanibel is where you feel at one with the community, and not a mere visitor. The whole area, including Captiva Island, works hard at maintaining its quiet, understated ambiance. No buildings higher than a native tree are allowed and neither are chain restaurants. Tourists can easily spend as much time on bikes as in their car and local boat excursions into the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge remind everyone of the area residents’ devotion to nature. The Captiva Cruise, which leaves from Captiva Island for Cabbage Key one hour away, is another excellent way to experience the local vibe. Money may not grow on trees, yet in the Cabbage Key restaurant, dollar bills fall like autumn leaves from the ceiling. However, the Hacienda Hotel in New Port Richey, originally built to accommodate all those movie stars, is being reborn and could reopen in all its original glory in 2020. Sweet surprises lurk everywhere in Pasco County. For example, New Port Richey is filled with turn-of-the-century buildings being restored and repurposed. One of them now houses the Cotee River Brewing Company, which brews up some interesting concoctions. The old firehouse building, in which the new owners discovered the original architectural renderings, is home to Ordinance One Bar. nights in her Manhattan condo at The Phillips Club in the very ritzy Lincoln Square area of Manhattan. We quickly agreed four days in early December would be an ideal time to take in the Christmas spirit and lights for which the Big Apple is so well-known. SIGHTS AND SOUNDS Conveniently situated at Columbus and West 66th Street, our luxurious two-bedroom accommodation couldn’t have been more perfect. I’ve always preferred to take in the sights and sounds of New York on foot and we were within easy walking distance of Central Park, Columbus Circle, Carnegie Hall, numerous museums, theatres, Rockefeller Centre and Times Square. What’s New York without a Broadway show? The musical, WICKED, has been entertaining audiences at the famous Gershwin Theatre since 2003, and is still going strong, with no end in sight. WICKED set a box office record for the Gershwin Theatre when the production grossed US$3,201,333 over nine performances for the week ending December 29, 2013, resulting in the highest one-week box office gross income made by any show in Broadway history, until that time. How could we pass this one up? Magic began the moment we entered the theatre, which is also home of the American Theater Hall of Fame, where inductees are given their own plaque during an official ceremony. Designed in a modernist art nouveau style, this particular theatre first opened as the Uris Theatre in 1972 before it was renamed in 1983 in honour of the legendary brothers, composer George Gershwin and lyricist Ira Gershwin. It boasts a seating capacity of 1,933 seats, the largest of any Broadway theatre. It also has one of the largest stages, making it an ideal venue for very large musical productions such as Porgy and Bess in 1976 and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express in 1987, just to name a couple. Its lobby walls are graced with portraits of alltime greats like Fred Astaire, Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel, John and Lionel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Lauren Bacall, Pearl Bailey, Kevin Kline, Cicely Tyson and more. I could have spent hours here just gazing at the stars.

hef, forager and food culturalist Lori McCarthy has developed an exciting menu for the launch of Adventure Canada’s new Taste of Place program, featured aboard Adventure Canada’s Newfoundland Circumnavigation expedition in June 2020. From-the-land dishes feature meat steeped in Newfoundland food culture with new twists: moose pasta, rabbit risotto and deconstructed lamb ravioli. From-the-sea selections include hand-line caught Fogo Island cod, Quidi Vidi beer-steamed mussels, seared seal loin and maple-glazed salmon. Accompanying locally grown vegetables are field-foraged or pickled. McCarthy bakes berries—wild partridge, blueberries and bakeapple berries— into mouth-watering tarts, buckles, cobblers and Nan’s bread pudding. “I want people to go home with a piece of Newfoundland in their heart,” she says. adventurecanada.com

In an effort to encourage visitors to explore this city across the bay from San Francisco, Visit Oakland has launched digital passports for its Urban Wine Trail and Ale Trail. Passport-holders can check into locations, redeem discounts and access business information and maps, all via their mobile phone.
