THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTFOLIO / SKETCHBOOK
Purpose of this assignment This unit aims to develop learners’ skills and understanding in the use of visual language in a photographic context. This unit explores the combination of applied research into photographic visual imagery, creative experimentation and photographic images. Learners should actively engage in contemporary and historical research and also in interpreting this understanding into their own image construction. The value of learners understanding the visual context and explicit/implicit messages of the work of others and themselves cannot be overstressed. As students’ practical photography progresses, they should become increasingly critical of the meaning and content of their own work.
Scenario Every year, Gloucestershire College HND Creative Media Production students stage an exhibition of their photography work as an accompaniment to the annual film screening that takes place in Cine-world at Gloucester Quays. The work on show must be sellable to photography collectors and enthusiasts. This year we intend to take over a space in the Quays for 2 weeks turning it into a gallery of our students’ photography work. The themes for the exhibition will centre around (1) Lust (2) Love and (3) Hate. You will focus your work in this unit on conducting research into the work of past and contemporary photographers of international repute and producing your own portfolio of images that can be displayed in the exhibition. Task 1: (LO 1 & LO2: 1.1, 2.1, M1, D1, M2 & D2) You must be able to 1.1: Investigate the role of photography as a visual communication medium 2.1: Investigate the application of visual language in photographic imagery As creators of visual imagery, either still or moving, it is important that you understand how images conceptualize ideas, communicate to audiences, and use techniques invented by other photographers and filmmakers. Being a professional photographer (or cinematographer) requires more from you than just being able to use camera equipment and manipulat e images. You should be able to learn from the work of others and use it to influence your practice. For this task, you will create a research sketchbook of the work of notable past and contemporary photographers (this should be submitted as a PDF document). Your work should discuss the meaning and context of each photographer’s work, the different visual codes and techniques each selected photographer uses, their influences, and why the photographer’s work is a significant contribution to the art form. Your sketchbook should also highlight images from each artist’s oeuvre that show the core themes in their work and discuss the role of photography as a visual communication tool. Remember, your sketchbook should state and discuss key theoretical ideas in photography and cinematography . You should reference experts and academics who have written on the subject . To achieve M1 show you are able to consider different photographers and the contexts in which they work. Discuss how they communicate and the visual codes they utilise exhaustively. To achieve M2 show you are able to consider the work of a variety of pho tographers (more than six) … there must be analysis of their visual styles and techniques. Discuss, among other things, their use of colour, juxtaposition of elements, line, shape, tone, perspective, composition etc. To achieve D1 show that you are able to appropriate several new ideas into your thinking about how different visual techniques can be applied in photography.
To achieve D2 you must show that you are able to conduct detailed expository research that investigates ideas, processes and constraints in photographic imagery.
YOUR RESEARCH SKETCHBOOK MUST BE ORGANISED AND WELL PRESENTED
YOUR SKETCHBOOK MUST CONTAIN A BIBLIOGRAPHY IN THE HARVARD REFERENCE FORMAT
Task 2 (LO 3: 3.1, 3.3, M3 and D3) You must be able to 3.1: Produce work that demonstrates knowledge of the relationship between image and communication 3.3: Produce photographic imagery that develops a personal visual language For this task you will produce and submit a portfolio of at least six exhibition quality images around the themes of (1) Lust (2) Love, and (3) Hate. In your work demonstrate your understanding of the visual communication techniques you have learnt during your theory sessions, and show your ability to use lens -based equipment for a specific purpos e (in this case the production of images for an art photography exhibition). You will then select two images from your work and turn these into an artistic image containing picture and text. Your “posters should show an understanding of the relationship between text, image and visual communication. Your digital portfolio must contain annotations and comments that discuss and justify your use of various visual communication and photography techniques. Attempt to develop your own personal visual language by drawing inspiration from the photographers you investigated in task one. NOTE: OF YOUR 6 IMAGES, 4 SHOULD BE STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHS AND 2 SHOULD BE EXTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHS ALL IMAGES MUST BE APPROVED BY YOUR LECTURER BEFORE THEY CAN BE PART OF YOUR PORTFOLIO
To achieve M3 ALL your work should be appropriately structured and presented To achieve D3 you must show you are able to plan and produce work that is innovative and imaginative
Task 3 (LO 3: 3.2, M3) You must be able to 3.2: Evaluate the relationship between image and communication in own work In order to improve the quality of your work, it is important to critically evaluate your own practice. For this task, you will examine and analyse your own work in a recorded discussion to be done in front of class. An assessment of your work should include: (1) looking at your images and comparing them to the work of other photographers, (2) determining if the final images are fit for purpose and (3) making specific suggestions on how the work can be developed and improved. The time for your evaluation will be given to you by your lecturer in class.
To achieve M3 ALL your work (including your evaluation) should be appropriately structured and presented

KEY POINTS ON ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The Merit & Distinction criteria will be further discussed during briefing sessions where you will be expected to take notes. You will have the opportunity throughout the assignment to discuss your work with staff. You must achieve all the pass criteria on a relevant unit to move on to merits grades and likewise with merits to achieve distinction grades. Notes (please take notes during briefing sessions)
PLEASE NOTE: It is essential that your work is grammatically correct with no spelling errors. There are several methods for assisting with this: Spell Check – All the software we use have UK spell check facilities that you should get familiar with. Copy Reading – After you have finished your assignment allow time to read back through it and amend any errors. Buddy Up – swap with a peer and read each others work, not only will you help them but you may learn something new as well. Authenticity – It is vital to your development that you are responsible for and produce your own work. You are expected to adhere to certain professional standards such as Harvard referencing your primary and secondary research and imagery that you use within your work. You should use a well-formatted bibliography at the end of your assignment or credit the work as you produce it by identifying the website, book, journal, magazine, blog etc where you found the information/image. Plagiarism – is serious, it is not acceptable to use other people’s work and try to pass it off as your own. The college uses a system called TURNITIN to check. It’s a simple process where we run your file through and it will identify how much is copied and where it’s from. Ignorance isn’t an excuse and we are far more interested in your own thoughts and opinions anyway.
How to hand in your assessment This assessment must be handed into Nosa Obayiuwana by the hand in date and time on the front of the assignment brief. If you have a valid reason why you will not be able to hand in the work on time, you will need to fill out and hand in an AE1. If you need to ask for a longer extension you will need to fill out and hand in an AE2 to your Head of School at least two days before the assessment deadline. ALL WORK SHOULD BE HANDED IN AS SPECIFIED BY THE LECTURER. YOU NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED THE SUBMISSION SHEET AFTER HAND IN.
