Welcome Welcome to this edition of Education Choices, the essential guide to what’s on offer in schools in Gloucestershire. The new school year has only just begun, but already there are more decisions to be made on where to send a child for the next stage of their academic life. There is so much choice out there whether you are looking for nurseries, primaries or secondaries. There are independent fee-paying schools, local authority ones and also the new

academies all offering something different. Over the next few pages, we hope to make those choices a little easier by offering advice and information to help parents and children make the right choice for them. We look at forthcoming open days, what local schools have to offer and hear from some of the county’s head teachers. Above all, we hope you will find this guide helpful in making decisions that are important for the future of your child.

Vocabulary! Vocabulary! Vocabulary!

A journey to outstanding BARNWOOD Park is a 11-16 girls’ comprehensive school in Gloucester which has seen significant changes and improvements over the last two years. Ofsted confirmed this when they recently judged the school to be Good in all areas in June 2014. Teaching and Learning is consistently good or outstanding and the GCSE results this summer were the best ever, achieving a rise of nearly 10% on last year’s results. Academic excellence in a caring and considerate, safe and happy community is our aim. Staff at the school are absolutely committed to ensuring that all students are challenged and supported

through inspiring and motivating, high quality teaching and learning across all subjects, ages and abilities within a well-balanced curriculum which offers maximum opportunities for success. The school has a reputation for excellent arts facilities and high quality productions and dance performances which showcase the talents of the girls of all ages and abilities. Sarah Tufnell, headteacher, says: ‘This is an exciting time to be joining Barnwood Park. I joined the school as headteacher in September 2012 and we have worked relentlessly over the last two years to improve all areas for the benefit of

WHIZZ Match and Whizz Opposites are newly designed games to stimulate your child’s literacy skills. The games have been developed by a team of experienced primary school teachers and tutors for 11 plus exam preparation. An extensive vocabulary is one of the most important requirements for all English literacy skills, including verbal reasoning. Verbal reasoning is a key element of both the 11 plus and Common Entrance examinations. The game can be played individually or in teams. The cards when played, automatically denote incorrect answers, so players learn from their mistakes. Trials have shown that children are more motivated to learn with these card games than using the standard word lists and flash cards. The game is fun, and ideal for holidays, car journeys, as well as at home. ● 200+ challenging synonyms and antonyms in each game ● 200 carefully selected words suitable for 11plus exam ● Ideal for 9-11 year olds ● One or more players ● Brightly colour coded £9.99 – available online at 11plusgames.com

that is both challenging and supportive. We are focused on raising standards through the creation of a culture of excellence in teaching and learning everyday that meets the needs of all students. First new-build Academy getting off to good start ALL SAINTS ACADEMY ALL Saints’ Academy opened in 2011 and is the first new-build Academy in Gloucestershire, and is a church Academy for the community, welcoming those of all faiths and none. Sponsored by the Anglican Diocese of Gloucester and the Catholic Diocese of Clifton, the Academy offers 900 places for students aged 11 to 16 and a 250-place Sixth Form with academic and vocational courses for 16 to 19 year olds. Our new, modern facilities provide a stimulating environment for learning and discovery but also a centre to support family learning and community

THE Richard Pate Nursery was delighted to attain the prestigious Bristol Standard recently for the second time. The Bristol Standard is a rigorous process of self-evaluation to improve the quality and effectiveness of provision through an annual cycle of reflection. Paula Hunte, nursery manager, explained that three years ago the staff decided they wanted to look at all aspects of provision to ensure the very best educational start for the children in their care. The Bristol Standard helps the setting work through ten separate dimensions for continuous quality improvement. Mrs Hunte involved parents

activity. In 2014, All Saints’ Academy was named as being in the top 20 per cent in the country for GCSE progress by SSAT (The Schools Network). Principal Dermot McNiffe said: “Having recently been awarded for outstanding GCSE progress and recognised by Ofsted for having effective leadership, outstanding governance and outstanding provision for students spiritual, moral, social and cultural development it is our vision to build on these successes to achieve a reputation for educational excellence. I am really looking forward to welcoming parents/carers and potential students to see for themselves what an excellent place All Saints’ Academy is.”

and carers through questionnaires and meetings and ensured the children were able to share their views as well. The children were at the centre of every improvement and the team constantly reflected on how the changes impacted the children’s education. The staff are immensely proud of their achievement, which shows in the pride that they take in caring for the children in the setting. They are more confident in their delivery of the EYFS and they have a deeper understanding of the uniqueness of each child in their care. Mrs Hunte has been a lead practitioner for the county and is pleased to discuss any aspect of the nursery provision.

HABERDASHERS’ MONMOUTH CELEBRATING our milestone 400th anniversary in 2014, the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have invested in new state-of-the-art facilities to ensure they continue to nurture the next generation of talented, high-achieving individuals ready to make their mark on the world stage. Past pupils include former Olympians, captains of industry, scientists, actors, broadcasters, musicians and entre preneurs. Monmouth was listed in The Sunday Times as the third best place to live in Britain and Tatler Schools Guide 2013 described the fees as “among the best value in the country”. Monmouth School and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls offer

the best of both worlds: the advantages of single sex education with regular, joint after school and weekend activities for boys and girls, and a co-ordinated Sixth Form timetable, offering around 30 AS/A-Level subjects. Outstanding results enable the vast majority of our pupils to gain

access to their first choice university. With a thriving boarding community, two new Sixth Form houses opened in 2011 and 2012. Founded in 1614, Monmouth School and its preparatory school, The Grange, know how boys develop best. Extra-curricular activities al-

low boys to excel in music, the arts, sport and adventurous, character-building pursuits. Frequently in the top 10 boarding schools for boys based on A-level results, they gained an excellent in every category in their ESTYN inspection, the first independent school to achieve this under the new framework. HMSG and its preparatory school, Inglefield House, offer a nurturing and aspirational environment. Filled with energy and happiness, there is a sense that pupils can achieve extraordinary things with

the support and encouragement of staff and fellow pupils. HMSG was ranked top in Wales for A*/A grades at GCSE in 2013. Enjoying an enviable sporting reputation, HMSG welcomed its new headmistress, ex-Olympic squad rower Caroline Pascoe, in April. HMSG will offer Sports Awards for the first time for entry into Year 7 in 2015. There have been close links with families from Gloucestershire and the schools offer a generous array of scholarships and bursaries. Success in sports, arts and classroom WYCLIFFE WYCLIFFE is celebrating a record year for success and development. Based in the Cotswolds, the thriving day and boarding school for children aged two to 18 has seen its students achieve success in sports, the arts and in the classroom. Five former students from the Stonehouse school represented their countries in the squash courts at the Commonwealth Games. Three Wycliffe Preparatory School athletes won medals in the World Biathle Tour Event in Pisa. In the arts world, a former Wycliffe singer made it to the number one spot of the UK classical music chart, another found his music used for a major international brand’s advert during the FIFA World Cup while one of the leaving students has been accepted at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In A-levels a third of Wycliffe College students achieved A or A* grades. A host of them will go on to top universities and many are following their dreams to have careers in science and engineering. Four students received a total of £107,000 in scholarships to study at American universities following outstanding SAT/ACT results after studying in Wycliffe’s US universities’ preparation programme. A further development in this area sees a new American Studies course this year, which will carry US high school credits through Wycliffe’s US partner school in Chicago.

Whole School Open Morning – Saturday 27th September 2014 10.00am -12.00pm

In GCSEs, Wycliffe students achieved 92% of grades at A*-C. The school bucked the national trend with 86% achieving 5 A*-C grades and 62% achieving grade C in English. This year Wycliffe College will introduce two new A-level courses in creative writing and computer science. The school is committed to providing the best possible facilities and this year sees the completion of the science refurbishment, during which every one of the 10 science laboratories has been rebuilt to state-of-the-art standards. Margie Burnet Ward, Head of Wycliffe College, said: “We applaud the achievements of all our students. “Wycliffe prides itself in providing the safe and nurturing environment which allows young people to discover their talents and to flourish.” At the Preparatory School, Years 7 and 8 will start the academic year with a new classroom block.

The £3 million university-style centre will feature high-tech teaching resources and new spacious classrooms. Work to upgrade the art block and the science centres have been completed as well as making the prep boys’ boarding house more like home. Adrian Palmer, headmaster of the Preparatory School, said: “We recently earned national acclaim for our care and support of gifted and talented children when we were awarded Gold Schools Membership by Potential Plus UK. “Potential Plus supports gifted and talented children nationwide and Wycliffe is one of only 10 schools in the UK to be awarded the status. “With our wonderful new facilities we can continue to ensure we help every child develop their unique potential.” Wycliffe’s next Open Morning is on Saturday September 27 from 10am to noon. Students have a very positive attitude to school. They behave exceptionally well and thrive on chances to take responsibilities.” John Kyrle students enjoy learning under the guidance of specialist, enthusiastic staff in excellent surroundings. These include language and data-logging laboratories, new creative arts and music centres, a bespoke drama studio and an extended Sixth Form Centre.

Winchcombe School is a small friendly school located in beautiful rural surroundings. The school has a reputation for high quality teaching standards that enable the students to reach their full potential. With fewer than 500 pupils it means that the relationship between teachers and pupils is strong. This leads to exceptional behaviour, a fact recognised in April 2010 when the school was designated as a ‘Lead Behaviour School’, one of only 20 in the country. Strong tradition in the sciences CHELTENHAM COLLEGE CHELTENHAM College is renowned as one of the country’s leading co-educational independent schools for boarding and day pupils aged three to 18, with a long history of excellence in the sciences. Many Old Cheltonians have gone on to make an impact in their specialist scientific areas on the world stage, such as Prof C David Marsden, a British neurologist who was one of the world’s leading authorities on movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Cheltenham College continues to build on this strong heritage and over the summer months has undertaken key renovation work in the Science department. Used by The Prep and College, the science block has been transformed with the installation of state of the art laboratories allowing pupils to undertake exciting experiments

and investigations beyond the traditional scope of curriculum. The biology laboratories were first opened in 1973, physics in 1982 and chemistry in 1983. The renovations will bring the facilities up-to-date, providing university-quality laboratory provision. John Jones, head of chemistry, said: “The refurbished laboratories will transform our pupils experience of practical science – they ensure that College can continue to put practical skills at the top of the science agenda.” Cheltenham College continues to offer a range of scholarships and bursaries at 11-plus, 13-plus and 16 -plus and is holding two Open Mornings this term; Saturday October 4 for the Prep School (three to 13) and Saturday October 11 for College (13-18). Helping our students Offering girls far more develop their abilities than just good grades STEPHEN MCKERNAN ST EDWARD’S PREPARATORY SCHOOL, CHELTENHAM EXCELLENT progress for each child, a personalised approach to pupil achievement, access to a vast amount of high quality sporting, artistic, dramatic and technological activities, all happening within 45 acres of stunning woodland, sum up what it’s like to be a pupil at St Edward’s Preparatory School. At the end of school life here we want your child to have had an immensely successful time, but be itching to go further to be all they can be. We will have prepared them academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually for successful transition to their school of choice. Along the journey we will have continuously given pupils enriching opportunities to develop their unique strengths and abilities. Small classes, small set sizes and generous high quality staffing allow us to know each child in a very special way. Our results and reputation continue to be impressive,

with about 50% of our pupils successfully gaining entrance to St Edward’s Senior School, and a large proportion gaining places at the local grammar and secondary schools. Our focus on excellent results, smaller classes and being very successful with pushing ‘middle rankers’ makes us stand out in terms of the offer we make to every pupil. Our academic scholarship programmes allows us to stretch the brightest pupils beyond what they think is possible. In addition, programmes such as the PALS Module – People and Leadership Skills gives an early introduction to ‘values based leadership’ – something I personally enjoy co-ordinating as our pupils will be leaders and successful contributors in their respective disciplines in the future. As

Edwardians they will bring with them a values based approach to all they do, based on Catholic, Christian ideals. Our most recent inspection report (Jan 2013) was very pleasing indeed. You can see references to it within the website. In our EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) we were awarded ‘Outstanding’ in Every Area’. This is something we are very proud of. It is the result of an ambitious programme of investment and quality delivery in our EYFS during the last 18 months. We are now a choice venue to host training courses, for the independent and state sector, sharing best practice to other settings. We remain committed to being the most successful junior day school in the UK. Our ambitions are the highest possible, in line with the unique privilege and importance of educating our young people for life ahead. Please click here for our most recent report. Come and see me, I would love you to meet our wonderful pupils and staff while experiencing the ‘gem behind the red brick wall!

A purposeful and caring community JONATHAN WHYBROW CHELTENHAM COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL CHELTENHAM Prep is one of the UK's finest prep schools, welcoming children from Nursery to Year 8. It is set in splendid 16-acre grounds with our dedicated Nursery and Pre-Prep, farm, Woodland School and our own boating lake, all right in the heart of Cheltenham. At Cheltenham Prep, my third headship, the aim is to ensure that the children are educated in a manner which combines traditional excellence with a modern outlook, embracing not only the academic curriculum but also co-curricular activities, never forgetting that children need time to play. The provision to meet this challenge will be enhanced by a refurbishment programme to the tune of £1.25m. This will include bespoke accommodation for children of pre-prep age and the Prep’s own STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) Centre. Our main strength is the people who make up its pur-

poseful and caring community: the children, their parents and the staff. Depending on the age at which a child joins (any age between 3 and 12), there is no stereotype. There is a genuine sense of a desire to make the best of what each individual has, regardless of ability. With a very simple set of guidelines (try your hardest, get involved and treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself), tapping into the potential of every child is possible. The quiet introvert is as welcome as the gregarious extrovert. I welcome families to come and explore Cheltenham Prep with me, see The Prep at work firsthand, and tour the extensive facilities we enjoy here, including our Boarding House for full, weekly and flexi boarders. It is with great pride that I will show you around personally and answer any questions that you may have. Cheltenham College Preparatory School Open Morning takes place Saturday October 4. CAROLINE PASCOE HABERDASHERS’ MONMOUTH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS ENERGY, happiness and a sense girls can achieve extraordinary things are at the heart of Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls and its prep school, Inglefield House. With a mixture of day and boarding pupils, aged 7 to 18, HMSG creates a real sense of community. Set in the beautiful Wye Valley, the school aims to provide the finest education possible and we are pleased to announce the introduction of a Year 7 Sports Scholarship which girls joining in September 2015 will be eligible to apply for. Inglefield House offers preparatory education for girls aged between 7 and 11, with boarding now from 7. Situated on the same campus, Inglefield House benefits from HMSG’s extensive facilities, including Science laboratories, Theatre, Music School and superb sports provision. A strong house system in-

tegrates girls from 7 to 18. Academic results are impressive, ranked top in Wales for GCSE results in 2013. HMSG achieved record A*/A grades with A*s at 47% and 76 % receiving A*/A. 27 girls achieved an A*/A in every subject. With 100% pass rate at A

Level now a regular achievement, most girls win places at their first choice universities to read subjects as diverse as Medicine, Law, Languages, Engineering and Economics. A close link with our sibling, Monmouth School, provides a dynamic Sixth Form experience with seminar-style classes in preparation for university. Our new Sixth Form boarding house, Augusta House, further eases this transition between school and university. HMSG offers far more than just good grades. Whether a pupil’s passion is for Sport, Music, Drama, Photography, Dance or CCF, the School will encourage her to reach the highest standard. At all ages, your daughter will be encouraged to take personal responsibility, to think for herself and to understand service to the community.

School where they say it is cool to work hard PAT CLAYFIELD ST EDWARD’S SCHOOL, CHELTENHAM WE started the new academic year with a fantastic piece of news about a former pupil who has just completed her first year at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, and has come top of her year, achieving a distinction in French and Spanish and therefore elected to a College Scholarship. This follows the news that during the summer a current student reached No 86 in the British Men’s tennis rankings and, along with his partner, won the U18 Boys Doubles Championships of Great Britain. On his mantelpiece there now resides a cup bearing his name alongside Tim Henman, John Lloyd and Andy Murray. Our excellent A-level results saw some outstanding results with students taking up places at Oxford, the Russell Group universities, as well as American and European universities. One talented drama student received an unconditional offer to study at LAMDA. Our GCSE results produced some superb achievements including 12 A*/A grades for one

student, three students excelling at GCSE Further Mathematics with Distinctions and over a quarter of our cohort achieving 8 A* or A grades. We also had tremendous success among other Year 10 students who were awarded GCSE grades A*/A in Mathematics, French, German and Italian all taken a year early. These results and achievements are testament to the caring and supportive environment at St Edward’s where students flourish in small class sizes with excellent teachers who have time to focus on each individual. The strong relationships between staff and students are built on trust and respect and there is a calm, purposeful atmosphere that pervades the school. It is, as I have heard students say, ‘cool to work hard here’. We have high expect-

ations of all of our students and they respond well to those expectations in classes that are engaging yet challenging. An independent education is a significant investment for parents and we understand the sacrifices made by many to enable their children to benefit from the education we provide at St Edward’s School. We do our very best to keep our fees affordable and for parents to feel they are achieving value for money. Our commitment to you is to provide small class sizes where the student teacher ratio is such that each child receives individual attention and close monitoring with early intervention to help them realise their potential. We know that in large classes, teachers are simply not able to provide the same level of individual support and help; we do not want that for our students. There is a special family feel to the school which encourages the development of balanced, inquisitive, confident and articulate students. St Edward’s pupils are well-rounded, caring resilient and just great company!

GARY WATSON TEWKESBURY SCHOOL MEETING the needs of the individual child is the focus of all our endeavours. After 26 years teaching in Gloucestershire, the opportunity to shape the lives of our young people and our local communities continues to be as rewarding as ever. It is through partnerships with parents, commitment from a talented and professional group of staff and support from highly able governors that the school continues to develop at pace. Children develop at different rates, have differing hopes and ambitions and many take time to find their chosen career. Young people are exposed to a wealth of opportunities both within and beyond the classroom in a school that places strong emphasis on the development of well-rounded individuals of whom the school and parents can feel justifiably proud. From the minute they arrive in Year 7, our students are expected to achieve. A new pathway structure is already paying dividends with all students, regardless of ability, making improved progress. Our primary transition programme begins in Year 5 when most of our students visit us for the first time. Thereafter, there are a range of contact points in Year 6 before youngsters start with us. Those events and many others can be seen in the ‘Gallery’ area of tewkesburyschool.org. Our Freshers’ Fayre exposes Year 7 to new avenues for them to consider. Alongside the more mainstream school clubs they have the

chance to become involved in archery, equestrianism, climbing, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, textiles club, Horrible Histories and chess. Regardless of their ability, students are set challenging and ambitious targets for their academic progress. More than 80 per cent of students choose to continue their education in our Sixth Form from where a similar percentage move on to undergraduate courses at university. To the visitor, the warm, friendly and positive relationships between staff and students and within the student body itself are immediately apparent and an obvious characteristic of a happy school where young people learn in an environment where creative and engaging lessons are the norm. Creative arts are well catered for with performances both locally and nationally. Our dance show sold out this year at the Roses Theatre. Our choir have performed at the Schools’ Prom at the Royal Albert Hall and our school orchestra gets stronger year by year. Acclaimed performances of Oliver! and Bugsy Malone have also graced the stage at The Roses. Sport, too, is a thriving and exceptionally strong part of the school. The school retained the Girls’ U19 National Schools Squash Championships in Manchester. Facilities include a recently-refurbished swimming pool, climbing wall and 3G all-weather pitch. We are proud of the results of our joint endeavours and share that pride with our students their parents and the broader community.

Everything we do is focused on our pupils ADRIAN PALMER WYCLIFFE PREPARATORY SCHOOL AT Wycliffe Preparatory School we take a real joy in watching our children flourish and move on to our own Senior School. We strongly believe that education is about far more than academia. As a successful and flourishing preparatory school in Stonehouse, near Stroud, we focus our efforts on equipping our youngsters with the skills they will need in life, such as self-confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership and sociability, while achieving their best in academics – it’s the whole person that matters. That means that we celebrate the successes of all our pupils both inside and outside school. Wycliffe Preparatory has a highly dedicated staff with a rich blend of youth, and the new ideas they bring to the team, and traditional values and techniques as practised by the more experienced teaching staff. Our Nursery and Reception Class have just been graded ‘outstanding’ in all areas in inspection.

All our children become advanced in computer use but this is a small part of what we do during tyhe week. We have sport nearly every day and our curriculum enrichment Saturday programme is broad. Our high tech teaching resources for pupils, such as 64-inch touchscreen boards and iPads will ensure we are leading the way in the region for teaching and learning. Years 7 and 8 will start the academic year with a new classroom block. The £3 million university-style centre will feature high-tech teaching resources and new spacious classrooms. Work to upgrade the art block and the science centres have been completed as well as making the prep boys’ boarding house more like home. We are a school of 350 pupils, of whom about 50 are boarders from many countries. Our pupils are encouraged to take advantage of all the opportunities they are offered. We urge them to have a go and do their best, which is an outlook that they fully embrace. Everything we do at Wycliffe is focused on our pupils.

KIRSTEN HARRISON NEWENT COMMUNITY SCHOOL AND SIXTH FORM CENTRE KIRSTEN Harrison joined Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre as deputy headteacher in January 2009, having been assistant headteacher at Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton-under-Edge. She was appointed to the permanent post of principal at the school in April 2014, after a period as acting headteacher. Mrs Harrison, who comes from Buckinghamshire, read English and Politics at Leeds University, before starting her career in a school in Swindon, alongside serving as a member of the Territorial Army. From there she taught English and drama in Lancashire and Yorkshire, before moving to Gloucestershire. Mrs Harrison lives in Cirencester with her husband, a science teacher, their daughter, 15, and son, 13. She enjoys spending time with her family, road running,

swimming, going to the theatre and reading 19th century European literature. She is a keen traveller, particularly enjoying brushing up her French and German on the continent. Mrs Harrison says she is extremely proud to be principal and that it is a privilege to work with dedicated professionals and superb young people. The school has a long history of excellence in the Visual Arts stemming from before its status as a specialist school for Visual Arts. It is committed to meeting the needs of all its students both academically and pastorally and prides itself on being an excellent example of a comprehensive because it offers a vast range of activities and opportunities for students but it is also a school where staff support and encourage students to do their best. We are proud of being a happy, healthy and safe school, with personal, social and health education core to what we do. Our students develop as independent, mature and confident young people who leave the

school ready to make a positive contribution to their community, for example, the school has been recognised as a national leader in promoting education about dementia, taking a leading role in the Prime Minister’s task force. Mrs Harrison is delighted that the school is going from strength to strength and recent examination results continue to match the school’s best, with many more students of all abilities achieving their potential. This is due to all the hard work and our determination to strive for excellence in every aspect of the school’s work. The school’s primary focus is teaching, learning and building student self-belief and an awareness of and participation in their local, national and international communities. . Overall, Mrs Harrison is excited about the developments at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre which she says is totally committed to being a community promoting confident, independent young people with a love for learning in all its forms.

A welcoming start to child’s education ANNE HAAS KING’S INDEPENDENT JUNIOR SCHOOL KING’S Independent Junior School provides a stimulating education for girls and boys aged three to 11 years, enhanced by the arrival of their new head, Mrs Anne Haas. Anne is passionate to work with pupils in this inspiring Cathedral setting, with it’s rich sense of community and powerful identity. The small classes, celebrated range of extra-curricular activities and outstanding pastoral care, means Anne, alongside King’s, offers a friendly and welcoming start to your child's education. “It is a school that is very well respected in local circles. It will be a great privilege to work in a school with such a rich history, interested and engaged pupils, supportive parents and a hard-working teaching team,” said Anne. Since Anne finished her teaching degree, she has been honoured to work in a range of different situations encompassing both state and independent schools in South

Africa, lecturing trainee teachers at university as well developing training courses for under qualified teachers during the changeover from apartheid to the new South Africa. These were exciting times and Anne was invigorated to be part of the change that would

allow fair access to education for all children in her country. Anne said: “I met some truly dedicated teachers who worked against the odds to provide appropriate learning experiences for the children their care. One

of the best maths lessons I have ever observed, either in South Africa or the UK, was a maths lesson using a bag of beans that had been sprayed with paint on one side. It was this teacher’s innovative approach, expertise and understanding of her pupils that made the lesson so good.” “This is what I believe is fundamental to a good education. If teachers make the best use of the tools that they have at their disposal to reach each child’s specific requirements, then they will be well on their way to inspiring a desire to learn.” For the past 13 years, Anne taught at Rendcomb College Junior School with the last 10 years as deputy head. She started at the King’s Junior School this month. “When I listen to the choristers sing Jerusalem at evensong or Hark the Herald Angels Sing at the carol service, I shall remember my own time in a school choir in another hemisphere and appreciate how much my school did for me, safe in the knowledge that the children at King’s will have the same memories I have 30 years on.

Richard is proud to be the head of Berkhampstead RICHARD CROSS BERKHAMPSTEAD SCHOOL BERKHAMPSTEAD is a happy, thriving community for girls and boys aged up to 11. Our established kindergarten and bright day nursery provide the very best start for children, whether they join at three months, three years or later. At Berkhampstead Day Nursery, we draw on 70 years’ experience of working with children to give babies the very best. Our staff are bright and well-qualified, our facilities fabulous – large grounds, play areas and gym. The atmosphere is happy and welcoming, with lots of love and care. Berkhampstead kindergarten (ages three to five) is special. Our innovative approach to Early Years gives a stimulating environment and develops a love of reading, experimentation and creativity. Featuring shared decision-making, it involves chil-

dren in planning activities and they rise to academic and physical challenges. Above all it produces happy, active learners. Our focus on the academic, through subject specialist teaching, pays off with outstanding results – grammar school achievements and scholarships are excellent. Trips, language days, music

workshops and themed experiences enrich what we do – I am always delighted to see the children embracing these and participating with gusto! We take sport seriously - all participate and represent school competitively from Year 3. Games and PE, practices and clubs keep our children extremely active. I was delighted to see them do so well last year; in district athletics, cross-country and cricket and to see all competing in super spirit. Singing for HRH Prince Charles; having a record 12 children accepted into the National Children’s Choir, winning prizes at Cheltenham Festivals were real highlights last year – the exciting opportunities have inspired! Berkhampstead’s environment is positive, the teaching innovative and encouraging and self-esteem grows as children’s talents, whether for music, sport, academic studies, chess or drama, are developed. I am proud to be headmaster here.

Inspection caps our special year DR STEVEN CONNORS MONMOUTH SCHOOL CELEBRATING 400 years of educational excellence – it’s official! Here at Monmouth School and The Grange, we have marked our 400th anniversary with an outstanding Estyn inspection report. Wales’ equivalent to Ofsted rated every aspect of our work ‘excellent’. We are the country’s first independent school to achieve this under the new inspection framework. The boys are thriving in every area: academically, in the arts, on the sports fields and on the river. We are regularly placed in the top 10 boys’ boarding schools and above our local competitors. We operate closely with our partner girls’ school, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, giving all the benefits of that academic, artistic and social collaboration, whilst focusing on the needs of boys in an environment developed around their particular learning styles. Music and drama thrive here. This year, The Earl of Wessex officially opened

our new multi-million pound teaching block, named after the School’s founding father, William Jones. It houses 20 classrooms, a lecture theatre and administrative offices. Day pupils benefit from our boarding community’s large number of clubs, and in Tatler’s School Guide, 2013, our fees were rated as “among the best value in the country”. Monmouth School has an enviable national reputation on the sporting circuits, but we also run B, C and D teams, giving all boys a chance to develop. Our 1st XV was rated eighth in the Daily Mail merit table and our coxed four won championship gold at the National Schools ahead of all the top rowing schools in the UK including Eton, Shrewsbury, Abingdon and St Paul’s. Significant investment has created state-of-the-art facilities, but the School’s ethos grows out of its history and is shaped by the people who teach and study here. When pupils leave, we hope we have broadened their horizons, boosted their confidence, and inspired them to commit to a future which will benefit themselves and the welfare of others.

In my on-going discussions with parents about what is most important when choosing the next stage of the educational journey for their child, they are very clear: ■ Show our children the world but keep them safe. ■ Teach them well; ensure they embrace and enjoy their learning; get the best out of them. ■ Enable them to take their place in society as successful, independent citizens. ■ Work in true partnership with us as parents. Parents recognise that in this rapidly changing world, the future must be about equipping young people with a comprehensive portfolio of skills and values that will enable them to present a flexible, adaptable and confident profile to the world of further education and

We are not just taught – we are cared for ST PETER’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ST Peter’s is a “caring and inclusive school” (Diocesan report) with happy students who make excellent progress socially, spiritually and academically. Exam results are excellent with two-thirds of a fully comprehensive year 11 group gaining at least five GCSEs at A* to C including English and mathematics. Ten students achieved all A* and A grades in all their subjects. A-level results, in a comprehensive sixth-form, are similarly excellent.

Ten students gained A* and A grades in every subject they took; twenty-two gained A*- B in every subject. One young man won a place at Christ College Cambridge to read mathematics and many others were accepted on to similarly prestigious courses elsewhere. The most recent report Ofsted report commented that, “students feel exceptionally well cared for, having confidence in the school staff to provide appropriate support when needed. WITHINGTON C OF E PRIMARY AND PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP A MAJOR benefit of a foundation stage unit is that children are able to work on adult focused activities that are appropriate for their stage of development. Groupings can be arranged so that children learn what they need to learn, when they are ready to learn it. Pre-School children

may work alongside reception children if is appropriate and vice versa. Groupings are more flexible to benefit the children and staff can provide opportunities that are challenging and meet individual needs. When playing, younger children benefit from playing alongside older and more experienced children. Older children benefit from working with younger children, for example, by explaining how to play a game.

Highest standards MARY P’S LTD MARY P’s Ltd is a children’s full day care facility next to Ashchurch railway station in Tewkesbury. We strive to deliver the rare qualities of combining highest standards of childcare with an educational, homely environment. We aim to meet your individual childcare needs and believe in working in partnership with parents to assist their children to explore the world around them and develop their potential as individuals. For more information, or to arrange an appointmen to see us, call Vikki or Emma on 01684 291194, or visit wmarypsdaynursery.co.uk.

Children are able to access appropriate resources and are given the time and space to develop at their own pace. The foundation stage unit further benefits children as they are in the same facility for a longer period of time. This makes the first few years of education a time of emotional security which builds confidence and reduces the stress which can be caused by transition.

Highest praise for nursery WYCLIFFE NURSERY WYCLIFFE Nursery has recently been praised for its commitment to providing excellent care and learning for its children. An Early Years Advisor from Gloucestershire County Council commented that the Stonehouse Nursery has a “harmonious, calm atmosphere” with all staff “enthusiastically interacting” with the children. The report stated: “Staff are committed to excellence and the setting deserves its “Outstanding” grade awarded on the last two ISI inspections.” Nursery Manager Caroline Marsh, along with her team of eight staff, care for up to 70 children. They were praised for providing “reassuring support” with the lower Nursery children and ensuring there are “appropriately stimulating” resources and displays in the classrooms. Mrs Marsh said the Nursery team pride themselves on being totally child focussed and they regard the Nursery as a partnership between children, parents and themselves. The advisor praised Wycliffe Nursery’s Key Person approach. “It means you can focus on each child and get to know them which in turn helps us provide more individualised teaching,” observed Mrs Marsh.

The report states: “Throughout the Nursery, displays are colourful and informative, reflecting respect for children’s creativity and capturing their comments about their work.” The children at Wycliffe spend as much time as possible in the Nursery’s extensive variety of outdoor areas including a wooded area, aptly called the Jungle. The County Council Advisor praised the freedom the children have to learn and play outdoors, mentioning an impromptu

She was impressed that the Nursery staff place a high priority on encouraging the children to learn through investigative play. She also observed that the children are allowed to play collaboratively, with staff trying to encourage in-

dependence through problem solving. The advisor also noted that observations of play are carefully logged to ensure optimum learning opportunities. This annual review followed two inspections by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which awarded Wycliffe Nursery an “Outstanding” grade on both occasions. Art at the heart WYNSTONES SCHOOL WYNSTONES School provides a creative education that offers first class music, drama and art to all pupils from an early age. The arts forms a backdrop to our unique educational approach, with age appropriate child-led activities at the heart of our curriculum. School choirs, orchestras and plays perform to a wide community each year, with our annual carol concert at Gloucester Cathedral attracting a 1,000-strong audience. The school has its own theatre, concert hall, and art department featuring a ceramic, silversmithing, blacksmithing and fine arts curriculum. Our curriculum enables our pupils to become self-confident, caring and responsible young people. Our academic curriculum sits well within this creative experience and our school is one of the top ranking non-selective Independent schools in the county for GCSE and A levels. Individual student attention, small class sizes and excellent academic teaching focuses on developing strong independent thinkers. There is a state-of-the-art sports hall that has seen pupils win the county basketball championships and county cross-country running. Come and visit us on one of our open mornings to see how happy our pupils are.

Popular rural school BEAUDESERT PARK SCHOOL BEAUDESERT Park School in Gloucestershire started this school year with four different year groups so full that staff had to disappoint some prospective parents earlier in the year, forcing them to look elsewhere. The independent school in Minchinhampton caters for 430 boys and girls aged three to 13, and incorporates a nursery, pre-prep and prep department. Headmaster, James Womersley, said: “Beaudesert has proved popular for many years not only with families who already live locally, but also with families moving into the area having decided to swap London life for a more rural existence. “Of course we never like to let a family down, but equally, there is a limit to our total pupil role and we are very focussed on providing a high quality all-round education. For us, that includes ensuring small class sizes.”

Setting is inspiring MALVERN ST JAMES

All 430 pupils at Beaudesert will soon be able to enjoy all the benefits of having a new, cutting edge performing arts centre on site. The school’s very own £3m grand design is on track for completion early in 2015, and will provide staff and pupils with outstandingly good music, drama and performance facilities. Mr Womersley said: “Perfor ming

in front of an audience can really boost a child’s confidence, and we think it’s a hugely important part of an all-round education. “From nativity plays to grand scale stage productions, and from rock concerts to choir sets, there’s rarely a day when there isn’t some kind of performance in progress here. I always enjoy watching our children perform.”

All students are supplied with a laptop to enable their independent learning. The Academy opened in 2011 with fantastic facilities. “The staff here are fantastic. There are many different subjects and extra-curricular clubs. As an aspiring journalist I wrote for the Academy newspaper which was a great experience.” – Chelsea Craven.

BERKHAMPSTEAD SCHOOL CHILDREN have fun at Berkhampstead School – a vibrant and purposeful place crammed with opportunities. Small classes and imaginative teaching give children a head start, creating enthusiastic learners with a ‘can-do’ attitude. Nurtured and inspired, they achieve excellent results in Grammar School and scholarship exams. Berkhampstead equips children well, preparing them for the best senior schools. Our outstanding pastoral care and our wellbeing programme ensure happy children – our priority.

Music here is extraordinary – nearly all play an instrument, twelve sing in the National Children’s Choir, our choir performed for HRH Prince Charles last year. Interest is high and starts young – the Pre-Prep Strings Workshop saw every Year 2 child with a violin! Art and Drama, often writ-

ten in-house, are superb. Our bright, spacious day nursery and kindergarten are filled with play and creativity, and provide a secure and fun-filled preparation for school. From three months old, children thrive in Berkhampstead’s positive, happy environment. Specialist teaching of Music, PE, Phonics and French enriches in kindergarten and beyond. Sport is plentiful and expertly coached. We play competitively and are successful – every child represents Berkhampstead in matches: building skills, co-operating and enjoying playing. Small classes. Superb results speak for themselves THE COTSWOLD SCHOOL ‘Students flourish in this ... truly exceptional school.’ (Ofsted) The Cotswold School has proven year-on-year that a non-selective secondary comprehensive school can not only compete, but can out-do selective and independent schools when it comes to delivering outstanding, challenging education, helping its young people achieve their potential. This summer The Cotswold School students excelled again and at A Level, placing themselves as the top most comprehensive school in Gloucestershire. Principal Will Morgan said: “This represents an outstanding level of performance from everyone involved in this exceptional school. “To see our leavers achieve such superb results and seeing them move on to prestigious universities, courses and exciting future

careers makes me very proud. The Cotswold School is giving them the very best educational start in life. “Excellent education is not about money. It is about expectation and culture. Our vision – ‘The pursuit of academic excellence and individual achievement within a caring community’ - extends beyond the classroom and gives each student the opportunity to compete, to grow in resilience and build their talents in a variety of ways. “At The Cotswold School, we encourage and inspire our wonderful young people to focus on their studies and achieve as individuals. Our superb results speak for themselves.”

The school is easily accessible from the surrounding villages, and the town of Nailsworth, with free transport provided by the Local Authority for children within the catchment area. Year 5 and 6 pupils and their parents are invited to visit the school for our Open Evening on Tuesday September 23 and our Open Mornings on Thursday 25 and Monday September 29. The school is proudly comprehensive and provides a secure and supportive learning environment. Small class sizes means that every student is known and understood by a committed and caring staff. We appreciate that every child is unique and the inclusive nature of the school allows us to develop each child’s individual aptitudes and abilities by

developing self-esteem and building confidence. Examination results are good, with students making good progress based on their start point on entry to the

school. Almost all of our Year 11 leavers go on to study at a wide range of post 16 institutions, including Cirencester College, Stroud College, Hartpury College, Marling Sixth Form and Stroud High Sixth Form. The school has excellent facilities in all subject areas, and in particular in the arts. We also offer opportunities to participate in a full range of sporting activities together with local and overseas visits including New York, France, the WWI battlefields, Germany and skiing in Austria; with future visits planned to Iceland and Kenya. These experiences are often amongst the most memorable for students and are a valued part of school life

at SWR. The school places respect at the heart of all that it does. Students are expected to show respect and tolerance of others, to work hard and to value the opportunities they are given. We are a welcoming, vibrant and friendly school which seeks to achieve excellence in all areas. One parent said: “We are delighted with the way our daughter has settled, she is being appropriately challenged and is making good progress. The staff are enthusiastic and approachable.” “Dedicated and inspiring teachers who go the extra mile. My son is fulfilling his potential academically and socially and has been given great opportunities.”

KUMON COME along to a Free Maths and English assessment event and find out what your child can achieve with Kumon. Every parent wants their children to enjoy school, achieve well and go on to lead happy and successful lives. The Stroud Kumon centre has been helping local children of all ages and abilities to improve their academic skills for more than 20 years. The centre offers study programmes in maths and English giving children the chance to develop their academic and life skills whilst building their confidence. The Centre offers individualised study programmes in maths and English, tailored to all ages and abilities, which give children the chance to develop the academic and life skills, and give them confidence. Unlike traditional tutoring, Kumon believe that children need to be given confidence and long-term learning skills to achieve their dreams. At Kumon, we aim for our maths and English students to reach an international approximation of their school grade (the Kumon International

Standard), within their first year of study. By supporting students to reach and surpass this international standard, Kumon is equipping students with the independent learning skills and ability in maths and English to successfully compete in an increasingly global community. Students work at their own pace, developing the independent learning and analytical thinking skills required to confidently tackle advanced work. The Kumon English Programme aims to develop students’ ability to read and un-

derstand a variety of texts, and to nurture a life-long habit of reading for education and enjoyment. The programme progresses from basic word and sentence building and culminates in critiquing advanced texts. Through daily study of this programme, students develop a wide range of reading comprehension skills, ultimately enabling them to interpret information in advanced literature and become proficient readers. The Kumon Maths Programme leads students from

basic numbers to the mastery of arithmetic, algebra and calculus, all without the use of a calculator. Through daily study of this worksheet-based programme, students develop an affinity for mental maths and the confidence to apply a range of skills when faced with a new challenge. Each level of the maths programme builds incrementally on the skills developed in the previous level, ensuring a solid understanding and the ability to put learning into practice. Kumon offers additional pencil skills worksheets with col-

ourful pictures to help younger children practise holding and using a pencil. The sooner children begin studying the Kumon programmes, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal. A Kumon student is progressed based on their current ability and not their age, though Kumon believes that every child has unlimited potential and can ultimately tackle advanced work through well-paced and individualised instruction. There are children of similar ages studying different material and children of different ages studying the same material. Everything is dependent on the student's needs, not on how old they are. Through the maths and English programmes, Kumon will nurture your child’s independent study skills, so they can apply this approach to all subjects and outside of school too. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Your child

will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. Your child will initially start at their just-right level, with a focus on building a strong foundation in the way they study; they will develop invaluable study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm, before confidently tackling topics they will not have previously studied. Once enrolled, your child will visit the centre every week and have daily worksheets to complete at home. They will begin studying at a level they are comfortable with, consolidating familiar topics before moving on to something new. Come along to a Free Maths and English Assessment Event at the Stroud Kumon Study Centre on Saturday October 18 and find out what your child can achieve. The assessment event will take place at the Roman Catholic Church Hall, Beeches Green GL5 4AA, between 10am and 2pm.
