arts and media providing training in specialist areas The creative industries span a huge range of opportunities, from graphic design, fashion, photography and music, to performing arts, broadcasting, fine art and interior design. This competitive industry requires imaginative and inspired individuals. Are you ready for that challenge? Our creative industries are a real success story in the UK; worth more than £36 billion a year to the UK economy, the industry generates around £70,000 every minute and employs over 1.5 million people. According to industry figures, the creative industries account for around £1 in every £10 of the UK’s export income.
The Gloucestershire College Arts and Media Academies provide training in exciting specialist areas through the use of live project brief where students work to industry standard specifications. The Arts and Media facilities offer bright, airy work spaces and state-of-the-art recording and photography studios, theatres and media broadcast suites. Students also work on numerous projects, performances and exhibitions throughout the year. Gloucestershire College is a founder member of the National Skills Academy Creative and Cultural and a Skillset Media Academy Partner. The Visual Arts department was also recognised with a Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in the College’s 2013 Ofsted inspection.

“Gloucestershire College was a lot of fun! If it wasn’t for GC and the direction our music lecturers gave us, our band wouldn’t exist at all”.
The five lads, all aged 17, secured their place in the World Skills UK Popular Music competition final after competing against 20 other Colleges at Derby College earlier last year. Whilst competing the students were assessed on criteria including; professionalism, technical accuracy, dynamics, musicality, presentation and showmanship. Raising Tension consists of Mat Hoare (vocals and synth), Owen Benjamin (lead guitar), Lucas Mason (percussion) and Seth Phillips (bass) from Chepstow, and Bexley Terrell (vocals and guitar) from Coleford. Their music could be described as “Alternative Rock with a Melodic Electronic edge”.
was amazing to be in the final. We were the only band who performed original songs during the competition heat, and we did the same in the final. It’s brilliant to be writing and performing our own songs, and that’s thanks to the course team for their help and encouragement.” Kevin Grey, Music Lecturer at the College said; “The team and I are so proud of the band, they’ve always had fantastic potential. Throughout the course, we have worked in the studio, nurturing their talent and further developing their skills in composition, writing and performing music which has resulted in two well-crafted and creative songs.”

Each year students are given the opportunity to work on some great projects in the local community which enables our learners to put their skills into practice in real working environments. Seeing the great work produced by my students is definitely the highlight of teaching at the College.”

Her simple black, white and red design warning of the dangers of texting while driving and of drink-driving won the judges’ favour. One message reads: “Think before you using your mobile phone. It’s not you that needs to pick up the pieces.” Molly’s campaign was then used as the basis of the whole campaign and was displayed across Gloucestershire on billboards, on the backs of buses and online.

This year, fashion students took a lead role in Cheltenham Fashion Week where Gloucestershire College students hosted the Education Show. The Dining Hall at Gloucestershire College’s Cheltenham Campus was transformed into a punchy pink lit runway and the Hair and Beauty team ran the bustling back stage for models and make-up artists. Students were able to get involved in all parts of the show from make-up and hair styling to photography and filming. Students have also studied elements of millinery, fashion photography, screen printing, knitting, modelling and pattern cutting. In July, the students put on a second show stopping catwalk presentation showcasing garments that they had created throughout the year.
Cheltenham Fashion Academy – A year on Cheltenham Fashion Academy, Gloucestershire College’s newest academy, has had a great first year and is celebrating the success of many of its students securing exciting fashionrelated destinations including places studying knitwear design at Nottingham University and fashion photography at Falmouth. The formulation of Cheltenham Fashion Academy was a response to the ever growing demand for fashion related subjects in this area, along with the notable increase in fashion events and media opportunities locally, including the introduction of Cheltenham Fashion Week (CFW), Gloucestershire Media Fashion and Beauty (FAB) Week, Cotswold Style Magazine and the ‘Love to Shop’ Awards – this, coupled with the College’s strong employer links within the
industry presented a strong starting point for an academy of fashion. The Creative Academies team at Gloucestershire College joined forces with two industry experts, Tiffanie Darke, Style Editor at the Sunday Times, and Jenny Bevan, Oscar-winning British Costume Designer, to officially introduce the Cheltenham Fashion Academy in the stunning surroundings of the Spiegeltent at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2013. The event welcomed 100 guests, including fashion students, GC staff and industry partners. Industry partners who have already signed up to support the Cheltenham Fashion Academy include; Cheltenham Fashion Week, McPhersonStevens Creative, Stuart Holmes Hair Salon, the British School of Millinery, the University of Gloucestershire and the Gloucester Style Festival. The Academy’s partners will ensure that courses lead to viable employment opportunities in the fashion and retail industry, or progression onto a higher level course.

Introduction to
hairdressing, beauty and holistic therapies WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN HAIR and BEAUTY? By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College “If you are motivated to help people to feel and look good then maybe you could be one of the additional 12,000 professionals needed in the hair and beauty workforce in the next six years. With the right qualifications and experience a wide range of potential work environments awaits including salons, spas, hotels, cruise ships, and TV studios. With a far reaching history, beauty is big global business and huge advertising budgets continue to drive demand. Customers and clients highly value their treatments as a relaxing or sociable experience and are willing to pay accordingly. One element of working in the industry that shouldn’t be overlooked is the safe handling of the potentially hazardous range of products and chemicals used in hair and beauty treatments. A recent American study suggested that 20% of hairdressers leave the profession due to allergies or dermatitis – so it’s crucial to get this right from the start. One way to consider whether a role is suitable for you is by thinking about the skills and attitudes required for the job and comparing these to your own strengths and interests. You can find some good examples using the job profile pages on the National Careers Service website.
As an example, below are some of the skills you’re likely need to be a successful make-up artist: • stamina, patience and concentration • creativity and imagination • an interest in current and historical fashions. • good communication and people skills • a tactful manner • the ability to work well under pressure • excellent attention to detail • good punctuality and reliability • a willingness to work long hours when necessary To develop the skills required for a successful career, there are a number of training pathways available, either full or part time courses, or in some cases via training alongside employment in an apprenticeship. To take one role as an example, a qualified beauty therapist will need to have achieved a relevant Level 3 qualification - which is equivalent to A Levels. New treatments are continually in development, often incorporating new technologies, and qualified therapists will continue to add new skills through ongoing training to expand their repertoire. Many people in hair, beauty, nails and spa go on to work in sales, marketing, public relations and photography, whilst others choose to concentrate on the business aspects of running a salon - for whom there are higher education courses available. Those

Jo Minns, Head of School for Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies said; “Anita and Kirsty created two fantastic high-end nail designs and I am delighted that they have been recognised in this nationwide competition; it is a huge credit to the talent and expertise of our nail lecturers and to the hard work and creativity of our students, not to mention fantastic for their personal portfolios. Well done!”
with enough experience, and the aptitude to teach, may choose to go into education working as a tutor or lecturer to pass on their knowledge and skills. Some of the job roles in the hair and beauty industry include: • Beauty Consultant • Beauty Therapist • Hairdresser • Image Consultant • Make-up Artist • Nail Technician • Spa Therapist There is a wealth of information available on the National Careers Service website: https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/ Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. The Hollie Gazzard Trust was set up in memory of 20 year old Hollie, a former hairdressing trainee and popular local hairdresser.

The skills that they learnt whilst working under pressure at a real live show gave them a true insight into what the industry requires. They have been working hard on practicing the chosen looks and the results on the runway were fantastic.”
The make-up artists worked on 24 models for four hours prior to each show, creating very different looks for each event from fresh and natural to smoky and sparkly. Jo Minns, Head of Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies said she was proud to be working with the Trust; “Nick has already been to the College’s end of year ceremony to talk to students about the scheme, which will be launched soon. Everyone was touched by what they will be doing. Although it was emotional listening to him speak, it was so positive. We do have individuals who struggle financially and sadly some will leave education because of that burden and the need to work. Beauty students excel in the WorldSkills UK regional heats Two Gloucestershire College Beauty Therapy students could be competing in the 2014 WorldSkills UK national competition finals this November after excelling in the regional heats held at Aylesbury College in May. WorldSkills UK is a national competition that drives excellence in workplace skills through competition. It runs competitions in a wide variety of subject areas, from automotive body repair and bricklaying, to hair, beauty therapy and media make-up. The WorldSkills UK Beauty Competition focuses on the role and tasks of a beauty therapist; reflecting both current and traditional beauty therapy treatments,
taking into account important competencies and skills, such as communication, presentation, client comfort and support, and the therapist’s posture and demeanor. Level 2 Beauty Therapy student Mollie Harris-Dunn, 19, from Gloucester took first place in the intermediate beauty category, and Level 3 Beauty Therapy student Jess Tout, 18 from Moreton-in-Marsh, took second place in the advanced beauty category. Competitors were asked to conduct full treatments on live clients; Mollie’s winning treatments included a facial, make-up, manicure and pedicure and a full leg wax, and Jess’s award winning treatments incorporated
electrical body and face treatments and a full body massage. Jo Minns, Head of School for Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies said; “The team and I are thrilled with the results. Both students displayed a very high level of competence, maturity and flair and were a credit to the College. It is only our second year of entering this national WorldSkills UK competition and the students have risen to the challenge fantastically. The competition presents a brilliant opportunity to pitch the skills of our students against students training across the country.”

health, care and early years WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE? By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College
“For people with the desire to help improve the lives of others, working in health and social care can provide a rewarding and secure career. The sector is one the UK’s largest and most varied with a career pathway to suit almost anyone. Caring for people in the UK today employs over 3 million people with the NHS alone making up 1.7 million of the workforce - only the Chinese Army and the US Wal-Mart supermarket chain employ more people! It is estimated that within four years 800,000 people over 65 years of age may be in need of social care either in their own homes or in care homes. This huge demand will require the support of an increasingly large and dynamic workforce with the skills and knowledge to fulfil the emotional, social and health needs of the aging population.
the scope to study towards qualifications alongside the role in order to access more specialised jobs and for those starting out apprenticeships may offer direct access to care settings including nursing homes and dental surgeries. Many roles will require higher education qualifications e.g. nursing and medicine - and competition is very high for places on these well recognised degrees and professions. For those with the motivation and skills to succeed there are hundreds of courses and apprenticeships available providing access to an increasing range of opportunities and stable future employment.
This huge demand will require the support of an increasingly large and dynamic workforce
More locally in Gloucestershire c.36,000 people were employed in the health sector in 2012 and by 2025 this is forecast to grow to c.49,000 making it the largest employment sector in the county for the foreseeable future. So Health and Social Care is a sector which is clearly one in growth, but what roles do people play other than the more recognisable jobs as doctors, dentists, paramedics and nurses? The range of career choices available is very broad and this is reflected in the entry requirements for jobs. People are employed as healthcare and care assistants, ambulance and minibus drivers, activity co-ordinators, administrators, and support workers. There are also more specialist roles including social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, counsellors, radiographers and psychologists which tend to require a higher level of qualification. For those already in employment there’s often

Spotlight on Early Years at Gloucestershire College Providing children with good-quality education and care in their earliest years is fundamental in their development as individuals. It is vital in helping them succeed at school and later in life. This then contributes to creating a society where opportunities are equal, regardless of background. Our Early Years courses will give you an in-depth understanding of the education and care of very young children, from physical health through emotional and educational development to supporting them to progress at their natural rate.
