the big interview KEITH SIMMONS Taylor Wimpey is reporting strong levels of interest in its range of new homes across Gloucestershire, says Keith Simmons, managing director for the housebuilder. With five current developments and a number of new sites due for completion in the near future, we are committed to delivering high-quality new-build homes for property seekers who recognise the benefits of buying with Taylor Wimpey. Interest rates remaining at a record low and a range of great value home-buyer incentives, mean customers are acting quickly to secure properties at our developments across Gloucestershire, including Kings Copse in Quedgeley, Chandos Manor in Brockworth and Chestnut Park in Wotton-under-Edge. Many of these purchasers have been able to take advantage of schemes such as the Help to Buy equity loan scheme which has made it more affordable for both first-time buyers and existing homeowners to step on to or move up the property ladder. In fact, about 50 per cent of our purchasers

now use Help to Buy to secure a home with us. A significant proportion of those are firsttime buyers, who have taken advantage of this fantastic scheme to take that, often difficult, first step on to the property ladder. Help to Buy enables customers to secure a Government loan for 20 per cent of their new home’s full price – meaning they only require a 75 per cent loan-to-value mortgage and a five per cent deposit. We’re expecting the housing market to remain strong over the coming 12 months and we are continuing to invest heavily in the area, with planning applications submitted for new developments in Cheltenham, Bishop’s Cleeve and Coldharbour Lane, Filton. These new developments will continue to meet the demand for high quality but affordable new housing in Gloucestershire. This year we are looking to complete 133 new homes in the county, while next year that number is set to rise to 145. These will range from two-bedroom apartments, ideal for firsttime buyers, through to five-bedroom family homes. Our key target market continues to

be focused around small family homes – customers seeking high-quality, welldesigned accommodation at an affordable price. Our commitment to high standards is reflected in the quality awards we’ve won. Our site manager at Chandos Manor, Andy Taylor, recently received a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National House Building Council, while four developments in the Taylor Wimpey Bristol region have been recognised with awards. What’s more, each of our new developments brings investment in the local jobs market, with an estimated 1.5 construction jobs created for each new home we build and a further three new jobs within the wider supply chain. Taylor Wimpey Bristol is building new homes at the following developments across Gloucestershire: Chandos Manor @ Coopers Edge, Gloucester; Chestnut Park, Wottonunder-Edge; Dean Acre, Cheltenham; Kings Copse, Gloucester and Lyde Green, Emersons Green.

feeling blue? Warm, cool, moody or bright, Gabrielle Fagan seeks out the shade of the season Blue skies may not be a permanent fixture as we struggle to see a settled summer, but the colour blue is key for this year’s interior landscape. Deep, punchy blues - think indigo and navy or Pantone’s peppy shade of cobalt, Dazzling Blue - can add depth and richness to a scheme, and the hues are so versatile they work in any setting, contemporary or traditional. “Dubbed as the latest alternative to neutrals, blues have really made an impact this year in homes, and the long-term forecast is that their popularity will last well into next year,” says Kate Tansley, creative director at furniture specialists, Multiyork. “Wonderfully versatile, there are so many beautiful shades of blue. And what’s brilliant is that they can be mixed and matched, so don’t be afraid to introduce a variety of blue hues into the same space. “A warm shade, such as navy, azure or cobalt, is the perfect choice for sociable spaces, such as the living or dining room, as it creates a cosy, inviting feel, while retaining a hint of elegance.”

Navy is also stylish, she believes, and is a particular favourite as its flattering undertones make it an ideal shade to team with almost any other colour, even those which sit adjacent to it on the colour wheel, like yellow and orange. Taking the plunge needn’t be scary, even a small amount of ‘moody blue’ can make an impact in a room, whether it’s in beautiful accessories, such as a collection of blue glassware, or for the bold, a feature wall. If the latter’s your choice, ensure there’s plenty of natural light and balance it with neutrals. White’s a classic contrast but may be a little harsh in a north-facing room; sludgy whites or even pale greys are a warmer choice, teamed with blond wood floors and stripped back furniture. Guarantee a settled and stylish outlook indoors by bringing on the blues...

garden’s grow

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK

Gardens are known to improve the lives of those living in deprived and vulnerable situations. Hannah Stephenson looks at some lifechanging urban garden projects

• Sow courgettes, pumpkins and squashes directly into their growing position

COMMUNITY SPIRIT As towns increase in size and green space continues to come at a premium, urban community gardens are springing up to allow people in busy, often deprived areas, some space to recharge their batteries. Many companies now see the need to support local green initiatives - Waitrose, Berkeley Homes and Boursin are just a few of the names to have supported community gardening projects and relevant charities. Fragrance brand Jo Malone London is also a big supporter of community gardens and is currently working with charities to help marginalised communities in key cities build and maintain beautiful, scented gardens. It initially collaborated with the UK charity Thrive, which uses gardening to help those living with physical disability and mental ill health, to create an Old English Garden in London’s Battersea Park in 2012, and has recently added a herb garden to the magnificent Redhall Walled Garden in Edinburgh, working with the Scottish Association for Mental Health. The company is also working with Rotunda,

a community centre in poverty-stricken Kirkdale, Liverpool, to create the Kirkdale Country Garden, which has just opened. “Our gardens are created to be therapeutic in the short term and life-changing in the long term,” says Rachel Baker, general manager of Jo Malone London. The Kirkdale garden will be an educational project as well as a place for recreation. Community members will be encouraged to take entry-level horticultural courses as a pathway to employment and self-sufficiency. So how can everyday gardeners replicate some of the magic of Redhall and Kirkdale Country Garden, bringing an air of peace and tranquility to their own green space? Garden designer Andy Thomson of BCA Landscape, which has helped create the Liverpool garden, explains: “Generally it can help to keep things simple, don’t make your garden too busy and over-complicate things. Find a quiet spot where you like to sit, perhaps at the end of the garden or in dappled shade. Then have a look around and see what is in your eyeline, what you can hear and what you can smell. If things are too busy then it probably won’t be very conducive to creating an air of calm. “Once you have picked your favourite spot in the garden, away from the make-shift football pitch and trampoline, you can then start to think about how to adapt the design of the space to best suit your needs. “A comfy chair or seat is a must - either fixed or moveable if you’re chasing the sun/shade through the day. A scented climber to screen and soften an unsightly fence perhaps? We used jasmine officinale with Rosa ‘Rambling Rector’ or Rosa ‘Gloire de Dijon’. If you need a project for your mental wellbeing, what sort of garden might you choose? “Limiting your palette of plants and planting in drifts or groups of three or five plants per species can help to create a more natural flowing feel,” says Thomson. “If all the plants have different shaped and coloured foliage and flowers it can be over-powering and too stimulating for the eye. “In any one area, try and pick plants that have a limited colour 10

• Continue to plant out vegetables including runner beans, cabbage, sprouting broccoli and celery

• Lift and dry Japanese onions • Plant out, water and feed outdoor tomatoes, peppers and aubergines • Support new growth of dahlias and feed with a liquid fertiliser • Water hydrangeas with a solution of colourant to ensure blue varieties remain blue next season and to encourage pink ones to turn blue where soil conditions are not naturally acid • Keep the pond balanced, covering around a half to two thirds of the surface area with floating plants like water lilies • Recycle grass clippings, composting them in a bin or using them as a mulch round trees and bushes • Pinch out the tips of trailing plants in hanging baskets to make them branch out and pick off dead flowers every few days • Trim back rose stems that have finished flowering to a point just above a leaf, to encourage the formation of new growth and a late flush of flowers range and if it’s calmness you want, avoid hot bold stimulating colours. Ornamental grasses towards the back of planting beds such as Stipa gigantea or Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ghana’ can create a lovely backdrop and foil for perennials.” Paul Forrest, senior horticultural instructor at Redhall and herb expert, says: “Most of the herbs in the garden have some kind of effect on physical and mental wellbeing. This is another driving factor in our choice of plants; chamomile, lemon balm, lavender, valerian and fennel to name a few.” Each project is supported and maintained through the sale of a Jo Malone London Limited Edition Home Candle, this year Silk Blossom, with a donation equal to the retail price going directly to the charities. help to buy

helps couple find their forever home with

and

Thanks to Help to Buy, Gloucestershire couple, Melissa Mould and her partner Curt Green were able to move up to their aspirational home at Circa, Cheltenham earlier than they thought possible and saved on the costs of climbing up the housing ladder by making the move in one step rather than two. With the support of the scheme, Melissa and Curt, who had been renting after selling their bungalow, were able to purchase their perfect place and now enjoy a bigger home and better location. Keen to take their second step on the property ladder and originally looking for a three bedroom detached home, the couple were able to afford four bedrooms thanks to Help to Buy as Melissa explains: “Curt and I were keen to move to Cheltenham as we really liked the town and it’s ideally located the same distance from both our work places. We hadn’t seen anything that caught our eye when Circa, Cheltenham was recommended to us. “We were originally looking for a three bed, but realised that by making the most of Help to Buy we could afford our dream four bedroom home. We now plan to stay here for the foreseeable future, giving us much more longevity in this home.” Help to Buy makes it possible to buy a home priced up to £600,000 with as little as a 5% deposit. In addition, for new-build homes, a loan of up to 20% of the cost of the property is available from the government. And with news headlines suggesting the scheme may not be available for all buyers, for long, now could be the perfect time to make the most of the scheme as Melissa and Curt did. “In the end everything worked out perfectly. We sold our bungalow, started renting and found our new home at Circa, Cheltenham, which would be ready at the end of our lease. As we were renting close to the development, we were able to watch our new home being built and now we have moved in, we couldn’t be happier.” Melissa and Curt bought a four bedroom Yardley at Circa, Cheltenham, a stylish development featuring a contemporary collection of two, three and four bedroom homes perfectly designed to suit modern living. A range of four bedroom detached homes are currently available, with prices starting at £310,000. The development is just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Pittville Park, Cheltenham’s largest ornamental park and is home to the magnificent Grade 1 listed Pump Rooms and pretty lakes. Meanwhile, the bustling

town centre has a huge range of bars, cafes and restaurants, an array of shops, from major high street retailers to boutique brands, and plenty of green open spaces. For more information on the homes available at Circa, Cheltenham, please contact the development on 01242 512 122 or circacheltenham@bloorhomes. com.
