Introduction to the
Gloucestershire College Sixth Form You’ve got options: Gloucestershire College Sixth Form
New GC Sixth Form Career Pathways launched for September 2014 The Gloucestershire College Sixth Form offers an exciting alternative to completing A Levels at school. Available at the College’s Cheltenham campus and Royal Forest of Dean campus, Sixth Form students at Gloucestershire College have access to great teaching staff, valuable work experience opportunities and outstanding support and mentoring in order to reach their full potential. With one of the widest range of A Level subjects in the county, students are able to select traditional A Level subjects such as English, Geography and History, alongside ‘new’ A Level subjects including World Development, Environmental Studies and Electronics. New for September 2014, the team have introduced a series of Career Pathways. GC Sixth Form students now have the option to study the traditional route of three to four AS and A2 Levels, but now students also have the option of choosing

the applied route, where they will choose two AS/A2 Levels alongside a vocational programme of study. The first six GC Sixth Form Career Pathways to be announced include: • The Professional Route – Business, Finance and Law • The Forensics Route – Science, Forensics and Psychology • The Humanities Route – Sociology, Geography and the Environment • The Health Care Route – Health Care, People and Services • The Service Industries Route – Catering, Travel and Tourism • The Sport and Science Route – Sport, Science and Nutrition The new Career Pathways have been developed to ensure every learner at Gloucestershire College can access an academic, technical and professional learning experience in one programme of study; programmes which promote and deliver the essential transferable skills required by any industry or further education route. Bob Cytlau, Head of the GC Sixth Form said; “Our new GC Sixth Form Career Pathways provide a clear progression route into employment, further or higher education in a specific field, whilst still being flexible enough to add value to
any career choice. For any of these progression pathways key personal skills are necessary: having a positive attitude and an entrepreneurial outlook. Such personal skills will enable students to be open to possibilities and challenges whilst helping students to think smart. They will also aid in developing other skills such as self-management, team-working, business and customer awareness, problem solving, communication and literacy, and application of numeracy and IT.” The applied pathway route will usually have some theoretical and classroom based learning, but students can expect to benefit from hands-on training in a work related setting, rather than the traditional classroom environment. The traditional pathway route will continue to focus on research, reading and the exploration of specific subject information and theory. Students can expect a focus on writing and assessments are based around examinations, and in some subjects, coursework too. Simon Hickman, Cheltenham Campus FORMER SCHOOL: CHEPSTOW COMPREHENSIVE A Level results: History (A*) Government and Politics (A*) Religious Studies (A) Simon Hickman, 18 from Chepstow achieved two fantastic A* grades and one A at A Level, which secured his coveted place to read History at the University of Cambridge.
“I chose my A Levels in History, Government and Politics and Religious Studies at the Cheltenham Campus because those are the subjects I am good at and enjoy. Gloucestershire College was the only Sixth Form where I could study all three together; it’s much more relaxed here compared to school, and the teachers are very friendly. I originally thought I might skip university, but then I began to realise I may be able to attend a good one!” Simon Hickman, Former A Level student

“A special place to study” Why choose a levels? “AS Levels and A Levels are well known Advanced or ‘Level 3’ qualifications and are easily recognisable by higher education providers and employers. AS Levels take one year to complete, are qualifications in their own right and form the first part of a complete A Level which takes two years in total. It’s common to choose four AS Level subjects to start with and then choose three subjects to continue with for a second year to achieve full A Levels in. There are other Level 3 qualifications available, such as BTEC or CACHE, and the new GC Sixth Form Pathways offer a chance to combine these different types of qualifications to get the most out of your post-16 education. How should I choose which subjects to study? There are a number of approaches that you could use when deciding which subjects are right for you:
Match choices to your career goal
As someone who is still learning about new opportunities you may not have a career goal in mind, but if you do have a clear idea about the profession that you are aiming for, then it makes
By Steve Weldon, Guidance and Recruitment Manager at Gloucestershire College
sense to optimise your learning towards achieving this goal. For example, if you’d like to work in medicine, Biology and Chemistry are usually required. Research what qualification levels and types are required for the job. If the role requires a higher education qualification such as a Higher National Diploma or Degree, then make sure that your choices will meet the entry requirements for your next step.
Play to your strengths
Some people have a strong interest or have a particular aptitude for certain subjects and this might be helpful in deciding which qualifications you will enjoy studying and to achieve the highest grades. Achieving high grades shouldn’t be your only goal though; make sure that the subjects and the combination of qualifications you choose give you the best chance of progressing onto the next step.
Keep your options open
If you’re still thinking about what you’d like to aim for in higher education or beyond, then some A Levels offer a greater flexibility than others. The Russell Group of universities produced a guide to their entry criteria which gives a list of the A Levels that they consider to be ‘Facilitating Subjects’. They include;
• • • • • • • •
Mathematics and Further Mathematics English Literature Physics Biology Chemistry Geography History Languages (Classical and Modern)
These are the subjects that are found in the widest range of degree course entry requirements so choosing from these should keep as many options open as possible. It is important to note that each degree course and higher education institution have their own entry criteria which might include qualifications not on this list! You might find it useful to strike a balance between choosing familiar subjects as well as one or two that are potential new choices. However, if the subject is something that you haven’t studied before make sure that you find out what it’s about before starting - don’t assume that you know what it will involve! Whatever your next step is, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. You can book an appointment to talk through your options by contacting Student Services on 0845 155 2020. Good luck!”

Daniel Lawrence, Cheltenham Campus A Level results: Anthropology (A), Archaeology (B), History AS (B) Daniel Lawrence returned to study for his A Levels after not finding work in the local area. Daniel already has two A Levels in Physics and Psychology which he achieved last year, and is now going to Birmingham University to Anthropology and Archaeology.
“I returned to study for my A Levels after not finding work in the local area, and have since discovered a passion for Anthropology and Archaeology. I started both as AS Levels last year alongside A Levels in Physics and Psychology, and I enjoyed them so much I stayed on to complete them. Studying at the College gives you the right amount of freedom and the teachers here encourage independent learning. I’d recommend it.” Daniel Lawrence, Former A Level student

“Since studying at GC Sixth Form, my life truly has changed. I left an all-girls grammar school due to the pressure for perfection and I was surprised and amazed to learn that at Gloucestershire College, this is not the case. The GC Sixth Form strives for the best for each individual and cares for you, as well working with you to ensure you achieve everything you are capable of.
Gloucestershire College is truly a breath of fresh air and offers so many different opportunities. Yes, there is an emphasis on achieving the best grades, but equally, there is an emphasis on showing you the different avenues that you can explore after your A Levels, and that life can, and does, carry on if you don’t achieve an A grade in all of your subjects. The Students’ Union at Gloucestershire College has been of huge importance to me during my first year here. As an active member of the Students’ Union you get the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of college life and have a voice in what goes on in your Sixth Form, as well as the college as a whole. Working with the Student Life Team and members of staff from all areas of the college leads to a sense of student pride and ensures that our opinions are heard and listed to. I feel proud to say that Gloucestershire College has changed my life. The GC Sixth Form was my third, and what felt like my final, attempt at A Levels. On my first day I was terrified that I would be judged by both my peers and my lecturers, but the opposite happened. I met many people, who like myself, had chosen a fresh start and applied to the College as the place for that to happen. I was not met with judgement, I was met with support. Both the pastoral care and the care from my fellow Sixth Form students is beyond anything I had experienced before. I’d be the first person to tell you that choosing to study with the GC Sixth Form is an amazing choice for you to continue further education. There is something special about this College; when you join, you’ll never want to leave.”

‘Youth in Europe’ Comenius Project
The GC Sixth Form at the College’s Royal Forest of Dean campus is part of a multinational European programme with a network of colleges across Europe. This has given the opportunity for students to work with partner colleges in Spain, Sweden, France, Germany and Hungary focusing on the topic of young people in Europe today. This project has enabled students to not only work on the project in the Forest of Dean, but also to travel to partner colleges across Europe. The first meeting was at the RFD campus where students prepared for and then attended a seminar in the House of Lords, chaired by Baroness Maeve Sherlock. GC Sixth Form students were then able to travel to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Eger in Hungary, and finally to Herford and Berlin in Germany.

Each full time student will have a dedicated Personal Tutor and a group tutorial session each week. These sessions enable tutors to help monitor students’ progress on their course and provide the opportunity to set challenging targets in order to assist them in reaching their goals. Student Enrichment programme see students visiting Peru Six A Level students at Gloucestershire College are currently taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to the Amazon rainforest in Peru. The scheme, known as Operation Wallacea, is an organisation that focuses on various biological and conservation research programmes in remote locations across the world. The purpose of this particular expedition is to aid with preserving the Amazon. GC students will be contributing to a research project that monitors key species, which has been running over the last 25 years. Luke Engel, one of the students who is visiting Peru says, “I am so excited to be heading to the rainforest, it is an incredible opportunity. People tend to think it’s a holiday that we’re going on, but I can assure you that’s definitely
not the case; it is a conservation expedition and we will be supporting an established team with their scientific research, Even though I know it’s going to be extremely challenging and hard work, I can’t wait!” In order to embark on the trip, the students needed to raise a total of around £18,000. They started raising the necessary funds over 18 months ago, taking part in numerous events and fundraising initiatives, including a 50 mile sponsored walk, bag packing in local supermarkets, raffles, cake sales and events. The support from local businesses has also been remarkable with contributions from the Lydney Grammar School Trust, and after a presentation by the students to bosses at Glaxo Smith Kline; the company pledged a huge £3000 to help aid the trip.
This expedition was available to all students studying at Gloucestershire College’s Royal Forest of Dean campus. A huge range of enrichment opportunities are available to A Level students at GC throughout their time at the college, all designed to help build their practical skills and knowledge alongside studying for their qualification. Find out more about Operation Wallacea at http://opwall.com
Each student is also assigned an ‘On-Track’ tutor who is there to help make sure students are meeting target grades for each subject area. This allows for additional academic help to be arranged if needed. The College’s tutors work closely with the progress managers to keep up-to-date with each student’s progress and development. They are dedicated to ensuring that no student struggles to keep up with their course and will offer all the support required so students can get the best from their studies. Through this, the College hopes to prepare all students to progress onto Higher Education, an Apprenticeship or into the world of work, with all of the skills necessary to be successful in their future career. The College’s tutorial system has been carefully designed to keep students on course for success, and was recognised with a commendation from OFSTED in the college’s recent inspection.
