business, administration, finance and management at Gloucestershire College WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN BUSINESS?
By Steve Weldon, Advice & Guidance Manager at Gloucestershire College In today’s global economy ‘business’ is a vast topic covering the process of exchanging products or services for money. It could be said that any paid employee is involved with business, whatever the shape and size of the organisation they work in. Companies may operate in different markets including manufacturing, agriculture, retail, transportation, utilities etc., but to simplify things let’s concentrate on some of the elements of what makes a business tick, and a small selection of the roles available for those considering their career options.
Marketing
Customers need to know about goods or services in order to buy the product and, put simply, roles in marketing exist to spread awareness, manage perceptions, and increase sales. Advertising to the right people, using the right channel, is a sophisticated process and needs people with a creative approach and high level communication skills. Other roles include market research which involves collecting and analysing information, trends, and ways to classify customer groups in order to target communication. In line with the developments in our use of technology, and particularly social media, ‘Digital’ is an ever growing area of opportunity to aim advertising at selected groups to achieve the maximum return on investment.
Accounting
Accountants help organisations and
individuals to manage their money. They prepare financial records and statements, and check them for accuracy, allowing them to provide managers or clients with a clear picture of their financial activities. The types of skills and attributes that an accountant might need include: 99confidence working with numbers 99good spoken and written communication skills 99an interest in business and finance 99good organisational skills 99the ability to solve problems and analyse figures 99honesty and discretion.
In today’s global economy ‘business’ is a vast topic covering the process of exchanging products or services for money. It is expected that the demand for chartered accountants will grow by around 10% by 2020 meaning that an extra 24,000 positions will be available – on top of those retiring and leaving the industry. There is a range of qualifications and routes into accountancy including university degrees or AAT courses at a college and depending on the role that you are aiming for. For those interested in finding out more, two large industry bodies are: • AAT for Accounting Technicians:
www.aat.org.uk/ • ACCA for Chartered Accountants: www.accaglobal.com Administration Careers in administration often suit people who are organised, have good attention to detail, can follow procedures and understand systems. The scope for employment within an administrative role is huge with opportunities in major public organisations including the Civil Service, the NHS, and local government, and at all levels of the private sector particularly in the insurance and banking and legal sectors. There are a range of routes into employment and many choose an apprenticeship in administration as a starting point, however there are also a range of course options starting at Level 1 which can lead to a career in administration, with some more complex or specialist roles in the Civil Service requiring university degrees.
qualifications available to develop the skills and competencies for success. Some choose to wait to specialise in a branch of business in Higher Education at degree level, but there are several chunky two-year BTEC Extended Diploma courses (equivalent to three A Levels) available for school leavers or others with a good idea about their interests and goals. Apprenticeships are also available at Intermediate (Level 2), Advanced (Level 3), and Higher levels in a range of topics including Business Administration, Marketing, Customer Service, Retail and more. Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. You can book an appointment to talk through your options by contacting Student Services on 0845 155 2020. Good luck!”
For more ideas about administrative positions, the National Careers Service gives a range of potential jobs available: www.nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk Other occupations in the field may include human resources, management, enterprise, finance, customer service, events management, auditing and many more – with specialist qualifications available each.

Apprenticeship in marketing now available at Gloucestershire College
The team at Gloucestershire College has launched a new Level 3 Marketing Apprenticeship after a surge of interest from the local business community. The Level 3 Apprenticeship is an 18-month programme and has been developed in partnership with local employers to meet the needs of small and medium size enterprises through to larger organisations. Peter White, Vice Principal at the College said; “The new Apprenticeship in Marketing provides a real opportunity for people who want to pursue a career in the industry but who have not yet been able to access the industry; it is also a great framework for junior marketers to study and get the credible marketing qualifications they need in order to progress in their career. It may also be of interest to those wishing to pursue a career in public relations and communications.”
“The creative economies are thriving in Gloucestershire and the College and we are delighted to be able to respond and offer this framework. Information Technology and computing at Gloucestershire College WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTING? By Duncan Willoughby, Advice and Guidance Co-ordinator at Gloucestershire College “From the moment we open our eyes in the morning and check the news online to when we update our Facebook profile just before going to bed, much of our life now revolves around a huge and diverse army of Information Technology (IT) specialists who help us to live, work and play in the modern digital world. Because IT is now at the heart of everything we do and is an industry driven by technology but run by people, there are a vast range of exciting and dynamic careers available in a sector which is constantly moving. According to a report by e-Skills UK, in 2013 1.4 million people were working directly within the industry or in IT roles elsewhere in the economy. With over 29.7 million UK employees dependent on IT to do their jobs daily we are constantly in need of technically skilled people to support our evermore connected economy. In the past year a record 129,000 new recruits were needed to fill IT and Telecoms job vacancies in the UK. These jobs weren’t just replacing people leaving the sector, but were newly created jobs, and this is something which is very unique about the sector. Even five years ago it would almost unimaginable to know someone who was employed as
an ‘App’ developer, but as technology rapidly evolves so do the range of new jobs available with futurists talking about exciting new skills such as “social intelligence” and “design mind-set” being required to succeed in the sector in the future.
as technology rapidly evolves so do the range of new jobs available... The current greatest levels of employment growth are in high skill areas like software professionals, ICT project management, and IT strategy and planning, however there are a broad spectrum of employment opportunities in IT security and technical support, web development, games design and programming, IT training, and systems analysis. E-skills UK’s recent employment forecasts recognised that of the new entrants into the sector in the past year, almost 20% of those came directly from education, which represents a fantastic opportunity to gain
early entry to employment. It is naturally assumed that to work in the IT and computing sector that you must have a background in Maths and Science, and whilst it is true that you generally need to have strong English and Maths skills to succeed in many jobs, the industry is so broad that it requires people with a host of skills and attributes - particularly creative ones. There are many routes into a career in the sector, with some highly skilled jobs requiring Higher Education qualifications, however many IT professionals often gain post-16 access to the workplace through Apprenticeships, or by gaining specific vocational qualifications at a further education college depending on which part of the sector you aspire to work in. These days it is not just about technical knowledge but also business know-how, communication, and management skills and many IT courses will help you with these. Whichever pathway you choose, the Advice team at Gloucestershire College are here to help you. You can book an appointment to talk through your options by contacting Student Services on 0845 155 2020.
STAFF EXPERT COMPUTING LECTURER Gavin joined Gloucestershire College following a successful career IT Industry. Gavin has held senior IT roles in major global companies and has designed, developed and directed the installation of a wide range of IT software and hardware systems in countries all over the world.
“It’s tough getting your first job in the IT industry; but the right qualifications and relevant work experience will help you to secure your first role. We always encourage students to help friends and neighbours with their home setups, to help a local charity with their IT requirements, or to find part-time work with IT aspects; these steps will help you to stand out.”
Good luck!”
Modern technologies in historic Westminster Level 1 Computing students were given a tour of Parliament this year. The students were in Westminster to experience and understand the use of computing in the wider world, and by Government in particular. The tour of parliament gave context to the students’ studies of Information
Communication Technologies (ICT) in the modern world. Guy Stirling-Lee, curriculum leader said, “We had a great day in Westminster. The students saw that computing is an important part of modern life - even in the oldest of institutions.”

Students improve charity website Year 2 Web Design students were given the opportunity to work on a revamp of the Hester’s Way Neighbourhood Project website. The students worked closely with the project coordinator throughout the live brief; ensuring that their design and content concepts met the charity’s requirements. Following an initial brief, several groups presented their idea to the project coordinator who then selected the ideas and changes the charity wanted to take forward. Trevor Till, course leader said; “The Hester’s Way Neighbourhood Project website brief presented a unique opportunity for the students to work on a real world project for a local charity. The students responded brilliant, and it is through valuable work experience like this that students have been able to secure employment at the end of the course.”
"Video Game-The Expo" in Paris Interactive Game Design students spent three days in Paris this year, visiting "Video Game-The Expo" at the Museum of Science and Industry. The museum currently houses over 1,000 m2 dedicated to home consoles, arcade consoles, PC Games, games on Smartphones and plenty more!
Codebreaking at Bletchley Park
30 students spent two days at the exhibition where they learnt about the latest games technologies and consoles.
Whilst the latest technologies and industry developments are at the forefront of the teaching and learning at Gloucestershire College, the history of the IT and computing provides a fascinating insight as to how the industry has helped to shape the modern world. With this in mind, a student trip to Bletchley Park was organised. Home to the UK’s
Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) during the Second World War, the very first computer was built at the site and the code breaking work that took place is often credited with shortening the war by two years. For decades, the World War II codebreaking centre was one of the UK’s most closely guarded secrets. Today, it’s a poignant place to visit and reflect on the achievements of
those who worked there; including Alan Turing, known as one of the world’s greatest computer scientists. Whilst at the site, students took the opportunity to see a replica of the first electronic computer; the enigma machine used during the war and learnt about the history of computing since that time through a lecture and code breaking tasks.
There were opportunities attend master classes in games design from some of the world’s leading games producers, and students were in their element testing the latest games, and seeing first-hand the latest advances and developments from top exhibiting manufacturers. David McCormick, course tutor said; “The students thought the Expo was an ‘awesome’ experience. It was fantastic to both see the gaming world from a truly international perspective, and having the change to do some sightseeing in Paris too.”
The Gadget Show 120 students took time during their Easter break to visit the Gadget Show Live 2014. Based on the prime time Channel 5 TV programme, The Gadget Show, the event brings the very best and very latets tech under one roof for you to see, try and buy!
profile of their offer. The trip is great for two reasons; it gives our students an opportunity to see the cutting edge of technology and it also gives our teaching team an insight into how we need to develop our programmes over the next few years.”
Owen Holbrook, Head of the IT and Computing department said; “The computing industry was well represented at this year’s event with traditional players such as Microsoft and Apple promoting their latest technology, alongside newer small companies exhibiting to raise the
In ‘The Hub’ presenters at the show selected their personal highlights of the tech on display, and presented guides to the best Tablets, Phablets and Smartphones, and the changing face of gaming and the latest wearable technologies.
